True Worshippers: Women in pursuit of God is an excellent well written book. It meticulously details the great contribution of women in their service to the Kingdom of God. Many of the great women of the Bible, along with others who have touched and impacted the author's life are included. Esther, Eve, Anna, Deborah, Mary the mother of Jesus, Naaman's little maid, Mary and Martha, Abigail and many others are put on display as their testimonies of the grace, love and the power of God are demonstrated.
This book is a good gift for mothers on Mothers Day, as it speaks about a mothers love. It is a good gift for a girlfriend, as it encourages and empowers women to be all they can be as they are led by the Spirit of God.
So many other good stuff are in the pages of this book. True Worshippers will inspire and encourage you in your walk of faith and service. This is a God sent book, you will be blessed as much as I am.

I purchased this book in preparation for taking the ARDMS general physics and instrumentation exam. At first, I reviewed all my notes and re-read my entire textbook (Kremkau). I thought I was well prepared. Then I began this book's questions. I found SO many questions that just looked at situations differently than I had thought of them and really cemented in my mind, okay, if you do this, how will it affect not only this, but this as well? I passed the exam with a 90% and some of the questions I swear were right out of this book. GET IT!!

THis book has many delightful recipes to help you enjoy summer grilling season. Additionally, it has helpful hints such as how long to cook various thicknesses of meat, and the most amazing side dishes! Also has plenty of vegetarian recipes for both on and off the grill. My favorites are the stuffed mushrooms and squash (on the grill) and the pasta salad (side dish).

This book is excellent-not only are the portraits of our canine fellows top-notch, the writing is insightful, informative, and compassionate-providing a truly unique veiw on the lives of these "working dogs" and the profound impact their services have on all of our lives, whether we are aware of them or not (for example, the mine-detection dogs). And there are the dogs that entertain us as well (circus dogs, broadway stars and 'supermodels'). Dogs are an integral part of American culture, and this book is a wonderful look at them (and us). Packed with pictures, this book is more than your average coffee table book and makes an excellent gift for dog-owners and animal lovers alike. Also a great book to share with children-the facts of these dogs lives are every bit as interesting and compelling as fiction.

This Book is GREAT! It is loaded with dogs. Chock full. I like to browse a book and this one takes hours just for the first pass. Not only are the pictures endearing, subtle, and insightful, but the text is a pure treat. I have literally laughed out loud (Sparky the guard dog) - been moved almost to tears (Nadia the seizure alert dog) - and have been simply awestruck (William Wegmen's Batty the super model). I have learned things about dogs that I absolutely did not know before.

Dog lover or not - this book is a must!

The hiking guide to Chugach State Park!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-15
Enormous Chugach State Park abuts the City of Anchorage, Alaska, the largest city in Alaska and the hub of tourist travel into the state. Easily accessed from Anchorage, Chugach State Park provides a variety of year-round recreational activities. This guide provides a run-down on a variety of hiking trails, suitable for the barely fit to the extremely fit.

The book, as advertised, provides descriptions of 50 different hikes in the Chugach. Some hikes are variations of route in the same area. The descriptions include distance, estimated time, elevation gain, and estimated hiking difficulty, along with directions to the appropriate trailhead, a sketch map of the route, and often photographs. Also included are some wise safety tips for hiking in Alaska, where weather can be extremely variable in just a couple of hours, and where man is not at the top of the food chain.

Highlights include Crow Pass, over which the old Iditarod Sled Dog Trail once passed, and Flattop Mountain, perhaps the most heavily climbed mountain in Alaska. Chugach State Park also includes areas accessable only by a couple of days hike, where the determined hiker will find nearly pristine wilderness.

This book is highly recommended for the hiker planning to visit Anchorage and looking for good trails, and for the long-time resident looking for some variety.

Take a hike! ...after you buy this book.

As a former long-time Anchorage resident, I can say that this is a well-written, informative guide for people of all skills. Whether you are local or visiting, there are maps, directions, and a condensed, detailed write-up, without excess fat.

The climbs range from the recreational family journeys to the hardcore hikes. The authors obviously have spent much time on each of these trails.

There is even a nice touch of history in the guide.. you can tell there was good research done off the trails too.

The black & white photos are there but can't do the land justice. Get out and go.

A celebration of Black men who are everyday heroes.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-22
This collection fills a void in literature by placing in one volume praisesongs to the many Black men who rarely make the evening news: fathers, brothers, husbands, lovers--heroes who never stopped and who never will abandon their commitment to their women, families and communities. Without hypberole, these sister- poets celebrate the Black men who have graced their lives; in so doing, they provide a welcome opportunity for the rest of us to do the same. Whether I share Adam of Ife' with students or "celebrants" at a funeral, people are genuinely thrilled that such an anthology exists. Naomi Long Madgett is to be commended for editing such a powerful volume.

A Definitive and Long Overdue Book on American Women Artists
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-17
It is very much to the credit of the young art museum at Brigham Young University that they are publishing such fine catalogues that not only enhance the Museum's large collection, but serve to fill voids in the compendium of art literature. This superb catalogue, edited by Marian Wardle, gives evidence of the vision of Campbell B. Gray, the Director of the Museum: his presence is palpable and promises a strong commitment to the art world.

Aptly subtitled 'The Legacy of Robert Henri, 1910 - 1945' this collection of works by women artists reflects the emphasis of the great teacher on the modernist perceptions of his pupils. The names of the artists sadly are not household names, but after reading and viewing this fine book it is embarassing to admit that fact. This is not an overview of 'lesser art' championing a feminist movement: this is an investigation into the art of women artists whose work is informed by their state of being women with all the powerful inferences that suggests.

Wisely, this catalogue is lead by essays written by contemporary women in the arts. Editor Wardle introduces the précis in 'Thoroughly Modern: The "New Women" Art Students of Robert Henri'; Sarah Burns offers 'fabricating the Modern: Women in Design'; Helen Langa writes 'American Women Printmakers: Adventurous Choices, Modernist Innovations'; Betsy Fahlman essays 'The Art Spirit in the Classroom: Educating the Modern Woman Artist'; Erika Doss offers 'Complicating Modernism: Issues of Liberation and Constraint among the Women Art Students of Robert Henri'; Gwendolyn Owens contributes 'Hidden Histories: Robert Henri's Female Students and the Market for American Art'; and finally Lois Palken Rudnick concludes the book with 'Modernizing Women: The New Woman and American Modernism'.
A broad spectrum of information, this: an even broader exposure to the visuals about which they write!

The photographs, which accompany the texts in appropriate places, create a sense of history that will be difficult to match in other books about this interesting subject. But the overwhelming part of the book is the art itself. These are paintings and prints of astonishingly fine quality, works that vie equally with those of men artists from this period. The reader makes refreshing discoveries on almost every page to the point of putting the Brigham Young University Art Museum on the travel itinerary for art lovers. And as with any exceptional, scholarly book there is a complete 'Artists' Biographies' section at the back of the book, a very fine compilation by Stephanie Andrews McNairy. This is an historically important, aesthetically rewarding book that deserves a large audience. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

American Women Modernists...was stunningly beautiful, and contains fresh information, including many illustrations, about a long over-looked topic.

I particularly liked the extensive listing of "Artists' Biographies", and the very helpful "Notes sections. The nine-page Bibliography is an excellent resource for those of us interested in learning about so many talented contributors to American art.

A "must-read" for all art collectors!

Review Date: 2004-05-06
Discusses the stirring, often emotional events of the Natal Campaign of the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa, when from Oct. 1899 to Feb. 1900 the British Army was pushed across the Tugela River, & heroes of the British Empire met their downfall. Bobs Roberts, George White, Redvers H. Buller, & Charles Warren had to appear before a Royal Comm. of Enquiry in London to answer why an apparently one-sided conflict could have cost so much in terms of men, money & material. This fresh investigation sheds new light on the controversial strategies, directives, opinions & reports which permeated every element of the campaign. Illustrated

The British Army, "with armaments and reserves that would be insufficient for a third class military power", was embarrassed by its poor showing (225 surrenders) against a force of scruffy farmers (Boers) in the Natal Campaign of 1899-1900.
After the war, so costly in men and money, a commission was established to review the conflict to examine the failures and correct the deficiencies. This book skillfully weaves the proceedings of that Commission with admirably readable narrartive to uniquely illuminate that unfortunate episode of history, the echoes of which can be heard yet today in South Africa.
"What did the Commiussion achieve? It changed the way Britain made war in the future. It changed the structure of command. It changed the attitude of the common soldier, and it spelt the end of the cavalry charge...".
And it laid the groundwork for the British Expeditionary Force of 1914, one of the finest armies in history.
Excellent reading for the general reader of military history, and essential for students of the Boer War and the British Army.
