FREE use of graphics is permitted ... it is a great resource for web designers. It has great designs and textures which, if used properly, can really enhance your website. A lot of the graphics can make for lovely textures and backgrounds. The graphics are from history .... ornaments from Oceania, Egypt, Greek, Pompeian, Roman, Byzantine, Arabian, Turkish, Moorish, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Celtic, Medieval, Renaissance, Italian ... loads of Ornaments from all over. A must buy IMO!

THE Grammar has Remained an Influential Source

Englishman Owen Jones first published his monument to design, the Grammar of Ornament, in 1856. It was originally published in installments for subscribers. Jones's illustrated plates and design motifs drew from nineteen different cultures including the ornament of Oceania, Rome, Byzantium, ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Moorish Spain.

The Grammar was adapted to architectural decoration, fabrics, textiles, tile design, furniture and wallpaper during the second half of the nineteenth century. It has remained influential among designers worldwide.

The quirky colorways are decidedly of another era and worthy of study. I have effectively used them to thwack my creativity out of occasional dead ends or potholes. This is a respected, classic reference. It is deserving of space in every designer's reference library.

Many literary reviews and criticisms are so technical theyare almost unapproachable, but Owen's analysis of The Grapesof Wrath is accessible, clear, and provides many useful bibliographical resources. Stolen from many university libraries, it is so useful. Buy your own; let the library keep its copy!

Owens was a fine Steinbeck scholar, and this text is one of Twayne's best sellers due to his careful examination of the text and generous interpretive skills. For fans of Steinbeck who require scholarly discussion for their research, Owens is excellent.

This is a good study aid for students of Steinbeck.

If I had to summarize this outdoor grill cookbook in one sentence it would be "Not your ordinary grilling cookbook". "Grill Cookbook" starts with a section on types of grills, maintenance, accessories and similar items. From there it makes a sudden turn from the ordinary grilling cookbook and moves out into a category of its own. Sample recipes that include Thai Shrimp on Lemongrass Skewers, Grilled Portobello Mushrooms on Salad Greens, Grilled Ravioli with Spinach and Two Cheeses, Halibut Veracruz Style, Pacific Rim Chicken with Peanut Sauce, Poundcake Kabobs with Chocolate-Coffee Sauce, or Pear Bruschetta (absolutely delicious). Of course it also has the obligatory backyard hamburger and barbecue chicken but that is where any similarity with other grilling cookbooks ends. Wonderful recipes that produce an elegant dining experience, it is a highly recommended book.

I was so anxious for the next Owen Archer, which was unavailable in the USA, that I bought it in England! As usual Ms. Robb does not disappoint. It is a beautifully wrought mystery, very satisfying. This one stayed a little more close to home than some more recent installments, and I missed learning about new locales from the author. But it was nonetheless as great as ever - the characters are so deeply and richly drawn they feel and ring "real". Jasper's character and his relationship with Owen was a teensy bit sappy, I felt IMHO. And we didn't get as much emotion from Archer himself in this one until toward the end when he's in fear for Jasper's life. While we didn't get so much new here, this reader deeply appreciate the author's keeping this time period, characer, and historical detail alive!
More Owen Archer! Hooray!

As a woman who graduated with a Psychology degree - and then shifted gears to become an Estates & Trusts lawyer - I find that Ms. Whitman and Dr. Glisson smoothly combine information from often-disparate schools of thought in their book. Planning for the end of your life is not just a medical, business, or legal affair; it is also a matter of the heart. These authors get that. The tone of the book instantly puts the reader at ease, with the use of humor and quotes from everyday people who completed surveys on the topic, and provides critical information no matter in what stage of life you find yourself. Share it with those you love.

My mother-in-law lost her battle against ovarian cancer in December. If only my husband and I had this book when she was diagnosed! It contains so much helpful advice that could have made the past two years less of a nightmare. The book has great information on clinical trials and hospice. It also would have helped us make sure all the right legal documents were in place. If we'd had access to this information earlier on, I think we could have saved a lot of money on attorney fees. Since I'm in my late thirties, I've never given much thought to wills, etc. But after reading this book, and watching the whole Anna Nicole saga on TV, I understand how crucial it is to have the proper paperwork, and am in the process of having a will and other documents drawn up myself.

The Debt Owed To Joe Louis and Jesse Owens

Don McCrae,a white South African who once taught English in Soweto, turned his curiosity about a news story regarding a race between Jesse Owens and Joe Louis into a beatifully written, detailed story of two men from Jim Crow Alabama, who are both symbols of achievement-and of unique targets. In Owens case, just after the '36 Olympics-and obviously well before the current "rules" regarding "amateurs",Owens was forced to race horses,Joe Louis, etc. to make a living and investigated by J. Edgar Hoover;Joe Louis was hounded-below the belt-by the IRS.Obviously, there have never been bigger lb. for lb. black-or American sports heroes-and McCrae seems to make this argument contrasting the era of Louis and Owens with the era of Ali and the Smith-Carlos protest at the 1968 Olympics. This should be required reading, particularly for todays professional-and "amateur" athletes.

we are talking less than a Hundred Years ago which wasn't that long ago at all.we are only talking about almost 70 years back.it's scary to think that two of the Greatest Athletes Ever were treated so badly stateside. Joe Louis was a Great Champion& he did everything to distance himself from another Great Black Champion Jack Johnson because of the Politics&Hatered that went down.and the sad part Joe Louis still never was accepted. same thing with Jesse Owens.this brother won Medals&Faced Hitler face to face&didn't back down.but Being the Best still only meant 2nd Class Citizenship in America.it's truly sad&they aren't ever given enough due now as we speak about the Greatest Atheletes Ever. personally what Jesse Owens accomplished in the face of Hate with Hitler was right there with Jackie Robinson&Larry Dolby breaking the Color Line in Baseball IMO. Joe Louis the Brown Bomber was one of a kind as well. just remember this wasn't that long ago.

Although the previous professional editorial reviews provide a fair description of this book, it's necessary to emphasize what an important piece of work this is. Heroes Without a Country is at times inspiring and uplifting, and at other times infuriating and saddening. The hatred and hypocrisy that Joe Louis and Jesse Owens had to endure throughout their lives and careers are staggering. Not only does this book discuss the achievements and struggles of these two great athletes, but it also provides a clear, unflinching portrait of what it was like in the apartheid of the South during the '30s and '40s--a reality that many would shy away from. Both Louis and Owens deserve to be considered on the same level of talent as other greats such as Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. This book shows these men's strengths, their problems, and their triumphs, all of which played out in the midst of the racism of a country that could not accept them for who they were.

I have known this book for many years, and own it in a couple of languages other than English. It is one of the most beautiful little books I have ever read, and I was very happy to find it in English and pass it on to people who can appreciate a genuinely poetic, yet totally unsentimental, close-clipped story. I was a little disappointed with the translation (as compared to, say, the German edition) but I'm not sure it could be done much better.

I am amazed this little gem is not better known and widely applauded. When I first encountered it, I was struck by the author's mastery of expressing profound saddness, with the deftness of Japanese calligraphy and the balance and economy of a perfect haiku.
It is one of the very few books I have re-read (several times) and I recommend it widely to anyone interested in original writing.

In this short piece, an extramarital love between two married people is shown through the reflection of letters by the man's wife, the woman's daughter and the woman herself. With a succinctness of language rarely found elsewhere, with imagery whose starkness matches the sadness of the story's message, Inoue manages to convey an emotional intensity that can only be described as haunting. There is not a trace of sentimentality in this tale, yet it deals with passion, betrayal and death. The author wastes not a single word: This is poetic prose at its best.

As a past employee in the education department at CCWF I can confirm this book is an accurate, realistic representation of the institution from both the staff and inmate perspective. I'm glad we have prisons, there are some inmates we don't ever want in our neighborhood. However, I was pleased that Ms. Owen presented inmates as human with feelings and emotions. I was also pleased that she emphasized the abusive background that most female inmates have experienced as well as the persistant drug issues. The only thing I noted that is different now is there is no longer tobacco in all state prisons. Ms. Owen did a lot of research!

Understanding Women in Prison
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-23
This is a fascinating book about women in prison and the different world they inhabit. Author Barbara Owen, a criminologist and experienced prison researcher, used a quasi-ethnographic method to study a large prison for women -- in her words, she did a lot of "hanging around." While doing so she talked in great depth to both inmates and prison staff, and we learn a lot from those conversations and her insightful analyses of them.

This book helps us to understand the lives of women inmates and what led them to prison. Many suffered abuse and trauma of various kinds, and most would be considered "marginalized" women in society. Owen explores the contexts of the choices the women made as each progressed down her "pathway to prison." The author illuminates how the prison experience is much different for women than for men prisoners. While men often "do time" on their own, women emphasize relationships, both with other inmates as well as with family members left behind. A prison for women is much safer than one for men. Most women inmates seek a useful way to structure their lives in prison and prepare for a better future, though some do not. Those who want to continue the way of life that led them to crime and prison become involved "in the mix", prison slang for the negative side of the culture and activities there.

If the reader is interested in why women get involved in crime (much less so than men, by the way) and what happens in a prison for women, this highly readable book is for you.

This is an excellent book, not only for tourists and visitors to the Monterey Peninsula, but also for those considering relocating there (like me). I wanted a book about the region that describes the neighborhoods and towns in order to get a general feel for the area (information pertinent to those contemplating a move), and this book does just that. It is amazing how much information the authors have managed to jam into each page, and they have included a good deal of local history. The book is written in a witty, engaging, almost conversational style. Unlike many books of this genre, the blurbs about restaurants, inns, and everything else are written descriptively, rather than subjectively or from the authors' personal points of view (which may differ from the reader). In short, this is a very well-written book from two people who clearly love the peninsula on which they live!

A transformative shamanic journey in the Celtic tradition
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-17
For those who have an interest in shamanic and process-oriented work but would like to proceed at their own pace, "Journey of the Bard" offers an experiential voyage into the Shamanic realm through the bardic tradition. Adopting the framework of the ancient Celtic worldview, Yvonne Owens weaves the reader into the fabric of the Story, juxtaposing the initiatory process with extensive multi-cultural references. Miles Lowry's artwork and poetry add another magical dimension to the work. In the tradition of pathworking, the reader becomes transformed through participation while exploring the archetypal Tree of Life/Tree of Knowledge. The result is the awakening and activation of the profound heart of the Artist who dwells within each one of us awaiting realization. A shift in consciousness is enabled as we travel with (or as) the Bard from the Garden to the Realm Beyond the Stars and back again, arriving with fresh new perspectives on the here-and-now, our perceived everyday lives. The author recommends that the journey through the process be allowed to proceed over the course of a year, in the manner of initation, so as to allow for the awakening of subtle influences within the reader's inner consciousness, intuition and creative self. During this time, the outer life will synchronistically mirror the inner processes. Although I read the book somewhat more quickly, over the course of three months, I can attest to the effects firsthand. I have encountered and crossed a number of thresholds since I first began reading. According to tradition, it is the calling of the Bard ot entertain, educate and elighten through storytelling. To follow the course of this Story certinaly results in the entertainnment, education and elightenment of the reader. The beautiful circular poetry and dream-like illustrations of Milses Lowry provide a wonderful complement to the astute scholarship and story-weaving abilities of Yvonne Owens. To add to my personal pleasure, there is also a well-selected bibliography.

A transformative journey through Celtic myth and folklore
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-08
Here is a book that, founded on demonstrable research with ample pictures to prove it, pulls together a wild and wide body of folk tale and metaphor and provides the reader with a useful life tool they can use the moment they crack the cover. A stylistically direct writer, Owens leaps to her subject with a sense of delivering unadulterated and important information. The book is primarily about the journey of the soul along the time-honoured hero's quest, but it is much more than that: it is an examination of one's own conscious body and body consciousness; it is a self-directed journey toward personal creativity; and (best of all) it is a fairy story. Like all folklore, the information Owens presents is ancient and universal. What is unique here is Owens' ability to sew together myth, archaeology, symbol, and archetype to show forgotten ceremonial and shamanic relationships. Journey of the Bard is in the tradition of Maria Gimbutas and Clarissa Pinkola Estés: an effective revelation of what we always knew about our human spirit, but seldom perceived due to patriarchal cultural overlay. The structure of the book is based on a chapter-a-month programme that takes the reader through the chakra system and the Celtic realms of the earth/garden, underworld, and heavens. Each segment contains an analytical essay on the symbology of that stage of the journey (i.e. chakra) as well as the actual story text. The bard (an Everyperson creative type) makes her/her way through the Celtic fabled landscape, encountering myth, monster, and guide. The reader, in turn, is meant to be on their own parallel inward journey through their own interior landscape. Like every good heroic archetype, the protagonist has to pass through the pits of darkness and dance among the stars to fully aquire the magic potential of their beings. At the end, the reader/bard is returned to the earthly garden in full possession of their creative powers. Included in this volume are original poems, paintings and drawings by Miles Lowry. His clear, precise illustrations of ancient motifs and artifacts are an essential component of the book, but most notable are his errie illustrations of the bard's journey, which add a fey beauty much associated with things Celtic. Appropriately enough, Owens describes herself as a "cultural theorist" - a useful catch-all term for this kind of sociological research and assembly project. Besides a wealth of art criticism and cultural essays, her past publications include The Cup of Mari Anu, a coming-of-age legend for young women, beautifully illustrated by Kevan Lane Miller, and The Witches' Book of Days, co-authored with Jessica North and Jean Kozacari. She is also known as the past editor of Hecate's Loom Magazine which, under her regime, became an internationally-respected alternative arts and philosophy publication. She also has a bourgeoning career as a Celtic/early music recording artist, with her second CD, The Moor and the Dowry, scheduled for release in 1998. The Journey of the Bard is the cornerstone of Bardic Journeys Tours, which will combine imaginative journeying with more literal travel to explore ancient civilizations. The first of these tours will be to Crete in 1998 and will not only showcase Owens' storytelling talents, but will also include musicians and historians in a very full and entertaining package.
