Brings Haida culture to life

I bought this beautifully illustrated book for my grandson, who is growing up in the Pacific Northwest surrounded by the art of the region's native people. I've colleced a lot of Haida and Tlingit art over the years and was so pleased to find the book's illustrations were both historically and aesthetically accurate. Between this book and the author's Storm Boy, kids can see Haida button blankets, Chilkat blankets, coppers, wooden chief's masks, the carved and painted interiors of long houses, the woven reed clothing worn in past eras, and of course totem poles. I loved the scale of the illustations in scents in the Frog longhouse, with the little girl so dwarfed by all the big carvings and sculptures. I have to say that these two books are among the best-illustrated kids' books I've seen in years. If I were on the prize committee, I'd award the author/illustrator a Caldecott Medal for sure.

Beautiful! Native wisdom and inspiring artwork.

This is a title that will entertain both the adult reader and the child. An adventure regarding stewardship of the earth. The dream-like images and intriguing story draw one right in. Would make a nice gift.

The story is easy to read aloud and the illustrations are rivetting. I bought this for my three-year-old son, but find myself using it as a teaching tool in my second grade classroom, as well. It is very similar to a story my grandparents (Quinault-Cowlitz/Coast Salish) used to tell me when I was growing up. The message about taking care of all our relations is an important one. The story ignited a new interest in volcanoes and pond-life in my son's imagination. His interest in volcanoes and caves became so keen because of this book that we spent hours in the volcano exhibits at the Natural History Museum and made a special trip to Carlsbad Caverns! Bravo Paul Owen Lewis.

Anyone gardening in the hostile desert knows how tough it is to garden. Can't say this book makes it easy, however, it sure makes it easier !
Some of his ideas are so simple, yet so effective. For example, stop fighting with uncooperative clay soil - put an old hay bale on top of the clay, and grow there !! It works, and over time the hay or straw softens the clay, too....Can't imagine not having this book as I garden...

Excellent reference.

The authors have researched and visited the grave sites of all 425 Confederate generals, even those overseas.
Each is listed complete with a picture of the man, details of his life and military career (with some corrections of errors on gravestones), name and location of the cemetery, (with detailed directions to the obscure ones), and a photo of the grave marker.
The basic layout is by State, but the Table of Contents, Alphabetical Listing, and Index make it easy to find any information. The usefulness is further augmented by tables showing where the generals were born, died, and are buried, the region and branch where they served, when and where mortal injury took place, (where applicable), and the numbers laid to rest in various types of cemeteries.
In sum, an admirable production, highly recommended for libraries and military history collections, and a valuable addition to anyone's Civil War bookshelf.

THE Grammar has Remained an Influential Source
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-10

Englishman Owen Jones first published his monument to design, the Grammar of Ornament, in 1856. It was originally published in installments for subscribers. Jones's illustrated plates and design motifs drew from nineteen different cultures including the ornament of Oceania, Rome, Byzantium, ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Moorish Spain.

The Grammar was adapted to architectural decoration, fabrics, textiles, tile design, furniture and wallpaper during the second half of the nineteenth century. It has remained influential among designers worldwide.

The quirky colorways are decidedly of another era and worthy of study. I have effectively used them to thwack my creativity out of occasional dead ends or potholes. This is a respected, classic reference. It is deserving of space in every designer's reference library.

FREE use of graphics is permitted ... it is a great resource for web designers. It has great designs and textures which, if used properly, can really enhance your website. A lot of the graphics can make for lovely textures and backgrounds. The graphics are from history .... ornaments from Oceania, Egypt, Greek, Pompeian, Roman, Byzantine, Arabian, Turkish, Moorish, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Celtic, Medieval, Renaissance, Italian ... loads of Ornaments from all over. A must buy IMO!

Many literary reviews and criticisms are so technical theyare almost unapproachable, but Owen's analysis of The Grapesof Wrath is accessible, clear, and provides many useful bibliographical resources. Stolen from many university libraries, it is so useful. Buy your own; let the library keep its copy!

Owens was a fine Steinbeck scholar, and this text is one of Twayne's best sellers due to his careful examination of the text and generous interpretive skills. For fans of Steinbeck who require scholarly discussion for their research, Owens is excellent.

This is a good study aid for students of Steinbeck.

Elegant dining from ghe backyard grill
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-01
If I had to summarize this outdoor grill cookbook in one sentence it would be "Not your ordinary grilling cookbook". "Grill Cookbook" starts with a section on types of grills, maintenance, accessories and similar items. From there it makes a sudden turn from the ordinary grilling cookbook and moves out into a category of its own. Sample recipes that include Thai Shrimp on Lemongrass Skewers, Grilled Portobello Mushrooms on Salad Greens, Grilled Ravioli with Spinach and Two Cheeses, Halibut Veracruz Style, Pacific Rim Chicken with Peanut Sauce, Poundcake Kabobs with Chocolate-Coffee Sauce, or Pear Bruschetta (absolutely delicious). Of course it also has the obligatory backyard hamburger and barbecue chicken but that is where any similarity with other grilling cookbooks ends. Wonderful recipes that produce an elegant dining experience, it is a highly recommended book.

I was so anxious for the next Owen Archer, which was unavailable in the USA, that I bought it in England! As usual Ms. Robb does not disappoint. It is a beautifully wrought mystery, very satisfying. This one stayed a little more close to home than some more recent installments, and I missed learning about new locales from the author. But it was nonetheless as great as ever - the characters are so deeply and richly drawn they feel and ring "real". Jasper's character and his relationship with Owen was a teensy bit sappy, I felt IMHO. And we didn't get as much emotion from Archer himself in this one until toward the end when he's in fear for Jasper's life. While we didn't get so much new here, this reader deeply appreciate the author's keeping this time period, characer, and historical detail alive!
More Owen Archer! Hooray!

As a woman who graduated with a Psychology degree - and then shifted gears to become an Estates & Trusts lawyer - I find that Ms. Whitman and Dr. Glisson smoothly combine information from often-disparate schools of thought in their book. Planning for the end of your life is not just a medical, business, or legal affair; it is also a matter of the heart. These authors get that. The tone of the book instantly puts the reader at ease, with the use of humor and quotes from everyday people who completed surveys on the topic, and provides critical information no matter in what stage of life you find yourself. Share it with those you love.

My mother-in-law lost her battle against ovarian cancer in December. If only my husband and I had this book when she was diagnosed! It contains so much helpful advice that could have made the past two years less of a nightmare. The book has great information on clinical trials and hospice. It also would have helped us make sure all the right legal documents were in place. If we'd had access to this information earlier on, I think we could have saved a lot of money on attorney fees. Since I'm in my late thirties, I've never given much thought to wills, etc. But after reading this book, and watching the whole Anna Nicole saga on TV, I understand how crucial it is to have the proper paperwork, and am in the process of having a will and other documents drawn up myself.

I am Balinese, have a restaurant and love food. I especially love Thai food.

The recipes in this book are excellent and have obviously all been tested by the author. Follow them and you will not be disappointed.

The presentation is clear at all times and the photographs are superb.

Partcularly helpful are a couple of pages on which wines best accompany Thai food - and they are not those that you would immediately think of. The explanations are interesting and illuminating.

I would recommend this book to restaurant owners, as well as people cooking at home for a few friends.

The Debt Owed To Joe Louis and Jesse Owens

Don McCrae,a white South African who once taught English in Soweto, turned his curiosity about a news story regarding a race between Jesse Owens and Joe Louis into a beatifully written, detailed story of two men from Jim Crow Alabama, who are both symbols of achievement-and of unique targets. In Owens case, just after the '36 Olympics-and obviously well before the current "rules" regarding "amateurs",Owens was forced to race horses,Joe Louis, etc. to make a living and investigated by J. Edgar Hoover;Joe Louis was hounded-below the belt-by the IRS.Obviously, there have never been bigger lb. for lb. black-or American sports heroes-and McCrae seems to make this argument contrasting the era of Louis and Owens with the era of Ali and the Smith-Carlos protest at the 1968 Olympics. This should be required reading, particularly for todays professional-and "amateur" athletes.

we are talking less than a Hundred Years ago which wasn't that long ago at all.we are only talking about almost 70 years back.it's scary to think that two of the Greatest Athletes Ever were treated so badly stateside. Joe Louis was a Great Champion& he did everything to distance himself from another Great Black Champion Jack Johnson because of the Politics&Hatered that went down.and the sad part Joe Louis still never was accepted. same thing with Jesse Owens.this brother won Medals&Faced Hitler face to face&didn't back down.but Being the Best still only meant 2nd Class Citizenship in America.it's truly sad&they aren't ever given enough due now as we speak about the Greatest Atheletes Ever. personally what Jesse Owens accomplished in the face of Hate with Hitler was right there with Jackie Robinson&Larry Dolby breaking the Color Line in Baseball IMO. Joe Louis the Brown Bomber was one of a kind as well. just remember this wasn't that long ago.

Heroes amid Horrors

Although the previous professional editorial reviews provide a fair description of this book, it's necessary to emphasize what an important piece of work this is. Heroes Without a Country is at times inspiring and uplifting, and at other times infuriating and saddening. The hatred and hypocrisy that Joe Louis and Jesse Owens had to endure throughout their lives and careers are staggering. Not only does this book discuss the achievements and struggles of these two great athletes, but it also provides a clear, unflinching portrait of what it was like in the apartheid of the South during the '30s and '40s--a reality that many would shy away from. Both Louis and Owens deserve to be considered on the same level of talent as other greats such as Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. This book shows these men's strengths, their problems, and their triumphs, all of which played out in the midst of the racism of a country that could not accept them for who they were.
