Mabel really doesn't like peas, but she's stuck at the dinner table until "every pea has been chewed." Unwilling to eat even one pea, Mabel has the clever idea of hiding the pile of peas...in her ears! Needless to say, when you have ears full of peas "words become confusing, their meanings amusing, ideas become hard to convey." Mabel's mother tells her to "stop," but Mabel hears "hop." "Mabel, hold still" becomes "Get out my old drill" and "Put those tools down" is received by Mabel as "Paint [your] face like a clown." Hilarity ensues. The illustrations are colorful and as raucous as the text. This is an fun book and an excellent choice for working on rhythm and rhyme as well as vocabulary (text includes words like devised, dismay, convey, mission, urgent, conceal, etc.). A great partner with Ain't Gonna Paint No More for a wacky-behavior-themed storytime!

This book is by far one of the best children's books that I have come across in a long time. There is a lot going on in this book and it will keep your child entertained again and again. With very expressive characters that are drawn well and a rhyme that will put your child in stitches this book will never take a rest at your house.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!!!!!!!!! My daughter likes it a lot too although I think much of the humor is directed at the parents. I can see myself keeping this one around for a long time. I was actually giggling out loud the first time I read it. I do have to say that I was a bit worried about giving my daughter any ideas since she's such a picky eater but it's too funny not to share. I hope there are more in the Mabel series!

This is a winner!

Mabel O'Leary Put Peas in Her Ear-y is a playful and zany rhyming book with whimsical and colorful illustrations that will become every child's favorite.

It also passed the important child test. My four-year-old granddaughter and I share the delightful ritual of reading books over the telephone when we're miles apart. I read Mabel O'Leary Put Peas in Her Ear-y to Caroline and she giggled and clapped her hands joyfully, and when we'd finished reading it, she asked me to read it to her again. Now that's a recommendation!

Mabel doesn't like peas but she can't leave the dinner table unless she eats them all. What to do! But Mabel has a plan. She hides the peas in her ears. The problem is that she is unable to hear anything her mother says and that causes many problems for Mabel and her mother.

Armchair Interviews says: Mabel's adventures will delight children and adults alike. You'll find yourself laughing along with your special child.

Brilliant Rhyme. Fun story!

When you don't like veggies, you must eat them anyway or devise a plan to make them disappear. Mabel O'Leary chooses to hide her peas in her ear-y, which makes for an interesting day when she can't understand a word her mother says.

Rollicking rhyme coupled with gorgeous illustrations of the young trouble-maker and her exhausted mother make this book laugh-out-loud funny and an entertaining read-aloud.

"MacOSX Panther Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips &Tools" is an updating of the earlier "MacOSX Hacks" to address the newest operating system from Apple, OS 10.3, popularly known as "Panther". The Panther OS update continues to provide opportunity for basic users and power users to customize, tweek, and hack their machines. Unlike all previous Apple operating systems, the OSX iterations incorporating Unix underpinnings, legacy OS9 and Classic components, and a continuing evolving Mac GUI, provide unusually rich and complex textures allowing for all kinds of customizations.

The book is a compilation of 100 ideas, hacks, tips, and tweeks contributed by a large handful of developers and power users covering mostly productivity-enhancing items, but also security and maintenance items, and some fun and geeky items. It is designed for the adventurous spirits who may need some guidance in customizing their machine and applications.

There are nine chapters of such hacks. Chapter 1 covers the user interface including how to customize the Apple-provided animations like the "genie-effect". Available third-party applications for customizing the user interface, like Konfabulator, are noted and evaluated (Hacks #2).Others include launchers, desktop applications, keyboard shortcuts and the like. (Hacks 3-9).

Other sections include an introduction to Applescript, Safari tips and tricks, multi-media tricks, file and device synchronization, and Unix tips and tricks, including how to use the Terminal application. Hack #27 is a guide to the hidden debug menu, which provides access to otherwise unknown Safari and browser features. Hack #30 informs how to use RSS with the Mac. You can learn to build your own MPS server from Hack #41 and build an emergency boot volume with iPod in Hack #52.

Many of the hacks are quick and easy. Some require geek-level knowledge. The most interesting and perhaps most valuable sections deal with Panther maintenance and security. Hack #93 is a 19-page security primer useful for both basic and power users.

Something for everybody...

The hacks in this book seem to end up in one of three categories. Useful to me, useful to somebody else, and just plain weird (but good for a laugh). The last is represented by Hack #60 - iOscillate. Think iChat, iSight, some adhesive, and a stripped down oscillating fan. Mac people have all the fun...

I found the hacks involving bluetooth, cellphones and your Mac worth the price of the book. Prior to this I "wanted" a bluetooth phone. Now I "need" a bluetooth phone. =) I was also happy to find the info on getting the Postfix Mail Server running.

The great thing about the hacks, IMHO, is that despite there only being 10 hacks or so that you might find useful enough to start using right away, you're bound to come up with another few on your own. For example, by combining what I learned from a few of the hacks, I was able to set up Virex to scan my Mail inbox for viruses every 15 minutes. So far, I've only found W32 viruses, but you can never be too cautious. =)

If you want to feed your inner geek, this book is for you.

This book has a little bit of everything for everyone. O'Reilly publishes a lot of OS X titles, but this one is the most unique of those that I have read (and I have read most of them). The reason is the insane breadth of the book. It covers everything from how to use Quicksilver (the best application for OS X, bar none) to how to share desktops, to script iPhoto with perl. If you want to see in just how many ways you can hack your Mac you have to check this book out. It's one of a kind, and for those with the need to really see how they can tweak their Mac, this is a must have.

....do that??!!

Once cracking this book open, it didn't take me long to have a "eureka!" experience. "I didn't know I could do that!" I heard myself say to myself. I learned something new that I bet no one else knows....or do they?

My favorite hack so far is using the services menu under the application menu. It's an amazing thing and has been used more often than anything else I read in the book. The next thing I'm going to do is use more scripting and attach those scripts to my file folders. Fortunately, the authors provide lots of great examples. Whew...I don't "do" Apple scripting.....yet. I will after reading this book.

The authors don't exclude the use of other applications in "hacking" the OS but they sure do provide a lot of helpful ways to use them. My very favorite hack in that way was their suggestion to "Clutter Your Desktop with Music." In that hack, #42, they suggest using a little iTunes add on called Clutter. Ohh...I don't want to give all of it away. I want everyone to have a copy of this book. You just have to use this little app. It's a great helper if you love your iTunes.

Some of these chapters will require return visits for me as I managed to find out that I knew very little about some aspects of "hacking" Panther. The book now resides on my desktop and will for the foreseeable future.

No one will lose by getting Mac OS X Panther Hacks and will surely be surprised at what they don't know when they get through this wonderful volume. Be sure to check one out for yourself very soon. You won't regret it.

This is the book that should never have had to be written, but when so many of America's business leaders get lost in mechanical functions, they neglget the customer. This quick read clears the deck: everybody in the organization sells, and customers are on top of the pyramid. I re-learned what I already know - sales people cannot do it alone, and when an entire organization benefits from sales, everybody pushes and pulls in the same direction. This book shows the value of setting clear sales goals, providing incentive throughout an organization, and the monetary growth it brings to believers.

A must read, sure to become a reference book

Mr. O'Hara concisely describes the problems that plaque many large companies. In fact the title may limit readership to only those in sales departments when the message pertains to all aspects of management. You will identify with the many examples given and thoroughly enjoy the solutions to the problems. This should be required reading for all executives and is enlightening to anyone in management.

The title "March, before Spring" and the title poem itself (placed nearly at the midpoint) echo softly in my mind and heart as I read--and read again and again--the poems in this book: delicate and powerful, moving from a husband's relentless illness to the experience of death and beyond, all in deceptively simple, straightforward language that magically evokes the ineffable quality of love.

A second printing for a poetry book is always something to celebrate, and especially this book. March, Before Spring has touched many people since it was first published. The letters sharing the common feelings that people experience upon discovering terminal disease and the death of a loved one, have encouraged the author to make the book available to hospice groups working with individuals to help them through their grieving. When Stephanie Mendel reads from this book, people listen. Anyone who has cared for a loved one in their dying or who has known someone who has, will want to have quiet moments with March, Before Spring. They will hear their hearts speaking deeply.

March Before Spring chronicles the illness, death from cancer, process of mourning and healing of a husband in a long and successful marriage from the point of view of the widow. The poetry, in the tradition of the very best of "confessional" poetry in contemporary American letters, is spare, elegant, lyrical and deeply felt. Ms. Mendel is a master at the use of the vivid image and ordinary experiences of life to convey the varied experiences of the entire process of caring for and about a dying person, and putting life back together again after his death. The lover of poetry will enjoy this book for the sheer artistry of the craft. The person seeking a book of poems to give voice to the universal experiences of mourning she so vividly portrays will find comfort and solace in its pages. As a psychotherapist, I have recommended this book on many occassions to people who are grieving, and all have been moved and grateful for chance to read it. In every sense, this is a book to own and to treasure.

Ms. Mendel's poems are stunning. She balances love and grief on the small details of ordinary life: an old shirt, the crumbs left on the counter, the dent left in a pillow. They speak softly but can tear your heart as the poems recall her husband, their love, his death from cancer and her struggle through grief. My first reading left me in tears; each subsequent reading shows me more of Ms. Mendel's power to give voice to near-overwhelming grief and what it takes to overcome such a loss. I am a physician and I prescribe copies to patients coping with the loss of a beloved. The local Hospice organization keeps copies in their library. The poems carry great healing power as well as beauty.

Anyone who enjoys marine art will really appreciate this book, not just for the great work by Geoff Hunt, but for the insights into his work. One of the most fascinating tidbits was his attention to the detail of the actual angle of the sun on the sails in the picture "Victory races Temeraire" at their location on 21 October 1805! The case studies of 5 of his works provides wonderful information about the genesis, development and completing of a great piece of art.

Geoff Hunt is possibly the most talented marine artist since Montague Dawson. This book contains dozens of prints of his most beautiful paintings, which in many cases are complete with earlier versions from line drawings to colour sketches. There are many descriptions of how the paintings came to be created, from who commissioned each one to the ideas the artist had about how to execute the commission and how he turned it real.

Most of the subjects concern warships of Nelson's era, though there are a few drawings and paintings of more modern warships or civilian ships. in particular, there are many paintings of the ships of the line in which Nelson served, many of them illustrating real incidents from Nelson's service career. The book also contains a large number of paintings illustrating ships and scenes from the Jack Aubrey novels written by Patrick O'Brien. (In fact, many of the ships which appear in these novels were real historical units which are faithfully reproduced in the book covers and other paintings included - in Hunt's words, "In most cases Patrick press-gangs real ships into his novels.")

The book also includes a number of studies of United States sailing ships, including the first US ship of the line (America) being built, pictures of the USS Constitution, and "General Washington's Wolfpack." Much as it pains me to mention a gentleman who was born in Whitehaven (the town where I live) but subsequently came back commanding an enemy squadron and raided the town, this book also includes some beautiful pictures of naval scenes from the life of John Paul Jones.

Geoff Hunt manages to make ships of the line and frigates from the era of fighting sail incredibly beautiful, but he also goes to some length to make his pictures realistic, even consulting the original logbooks of the ships concerned when he is trying to capture real feats of seamanship. He also consulted the original signal code books before painting the signal flags flown by his warships, so they spell out appropriate messages in the codes of the period.

If you are attracted to pictures of ships from the era of fighting sail, you will love this book.

As the spouse to a physician, I have always wondered if our relationship was unique. After reading this book, I realized the answer is yes and no. Yes, it is unique in that I am married to a physician which has its own set of characteristics. And No, it isn't unique among other medical marriages. We are not alone when it comes to spouses who are driven, perfectionists, and OCD to name a few. This book lays out the various types of physician relationships, their personality traits and characteristics and examples of good and bad relationships. An added benefit is the quotes from real life couples and also the steps successful couples have followed. This book really saved my sanity and gave me perspective I greatly needed at a tough time. I realized I had to have a different understanding of my relationship as it was unique to the profession. A wonderful book for anyone about to enter a relationship with a physician, anyone already in a relationship and for the physician themselves! ( My husband read it and said, 'Hmm, that does sound like me!" )

Separate sections for the male as the physician, the female as the physician, and when both are physicians are presented. Whatever your circumstance, it is very useful to see your relationship difficulties in terms of the problems that others are undoubtedly experiencing. You can benefit from the authors' useful ideas for best managing typical conflicts, without blaming yourself or your spouse. The authors note that all counseling, reimbursed by US-based health insurance, involves assigning a psychiatric pathology label. This process, alone, is likely to be iatrogenic.
Learning to best manage life's difficulties is is a major thrust of the Coalition for Marriage, Family and Couples Education (smartmarriages.com) an organization to which the authors contribute. Repetiton of improved relational habits from educational foundations, such as this book are an important key typically unknown to a majority of "therapists."
This is a "must" textbook for medical libraries, and a must read for those entering medical school.

No doubt ~ it was a relief to read we weren't the only ones. Medical marriages are without question wound together tightly by stress, partly due to the job, and partly due to the type of personality the job attracts (the best docs out there seem to have a degree of OCD, which interestingly often contributes to their success).

I did not find this book to be helpful in moving forward however. For that, I turned to the marriage topic in general and discovered "All You Need Is Love and Other Lies About Marriage." Between these two titles, I feel we've gotten past some bumps in the road and hopefully *fingers crossed* are educated enough to head future trouble off at the pass.

If you're drowning in a medical marriage, use these two books as your life saver. And know that you aren't alone! Much luck and happiness to you. :o)

I wish I'd come across this book years ago. Medical schools should have a mandatory class built around this book. Reading it I constantly found myself amazed at how similar the accounts of other medical marriage were to my own. I'd find my physician husband's behaviors, opinions, attitudes, etc. common to many other physicians in the book and my own frustrations, worries, behaviors mirrored by many of the physician wives in the book as well. The book classifies medical marriages into 8 categories (male physician married to at-home wife, female physician married to non-physician, two married physicians, etc.) I was surprised at how closely our category tagged our relationship's problems, strengths, needs. I do wish they'd gone into more detail on how to handle the various problems, ways to avoid the common pitfalls, etc. I plan on lending it to a friend where both husband and wife are physicians.

This was a fascinating book on events and lives immediately after the flood. It's sad how men's hearts are unchanged. Envy, jealous, pride, self-righteousness, and selfish ambition (among a host of other sins) are clearly portrayed in the lives of Noah's off-spring.

I liked how Canaan was portrayed as a very humble man who desired to know God, even though he was cursed due to his father's sin.

I highly recommend reading the book Noah (by the same author) prior to reading this. It will fill in many details.

Melchizedek is one of the most intriguing people in the Bible. I think because so little is said about him. Mrs. Traylor brings him out of the Bible and into your home. Even though this book can stand alone, I would recommend that you read it as a sequel to "Noah" (ISBN: 0970027419). One of the things that I admire about Mrs. Traylor is her research. And you can tell that she has done a lot of research on him from how well the story flows together. This book is also a great lead in to her book "Abraham" (ISBN: 0842359753). But be prepared, no matter if you read this book as a stand alone or with the others, to be entranced, entertained and to enjoy this book and to be saying, "HHMMMMM" a lot. I have read this book several times and have enjoyed it each and every time. Along with always finding new "stuff" in it. For anyone, Christian or not, I would recommend this book.

I have read most of the others in the series and this is one of my favorites. It fills in some of the gaps of the life of Melchizedek that are mentioned the her other book 'Jerusalem, City of God'. Starts from the time when he was born, as a grandson to Noah, and we trek through the journay of his founding of Jerusalem. Recommend it to all readers. Tremendous book!

This book is filled with priceless historic snapshots of real-life everyday drama that cannot be found in any textbook. From farmers, fishermen, and merchants to executioners and geishas who entertained kamikaze pilots in the last days of their lives, these simple, unadorned memories of ordinary smalltown Japanese people living in a previous era under circumstances that we in modern, high-tech times cannot imagine left me in awe of the power of the human body and spirit. A learning experience in culture and history that reinforces how valuable the memories of our own elders are.

One of the best books about pre-war Japan. Each story brings to life a different aspect of life, culture, and class as they existed before the war. If you've visited Japan, you'll have a hard time believing this kind of world ever existed. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down.

This is a factual book in which a world that no longer exists becomes vividly real as seen through a provincial doctor's elderly patients recollections of their younger lives. My first introduction to this book came through my Japanese language teacher. Her physician is the son of the author. Each chapter covers the recollections of a single patient, so the book is very easily read in discreet portraits which together paint the overall picture. Dr Saga's patients tell their stories with such intimacy, warmth and frankness that you are drawn ever deeper into their world. All lived in and around Tsuchiura, a town on the edge of a large lake about 30 miles north of Tokyo. Many of the stories are of fishermen who made their living from the lake. There are also the merchants, gangsters and entertainers. Together, these people provide a real insight into the way people lived and worked in Japan before the rapid development of the latter half of the 20th century produced the comfortable lifestyles of today.

1st person accounts collected by a Tsuchiura doctor from elderly Japanese. Together, they piece together a quiltwork of Japanese society from the bottom on up. All, in pre-war Japan. Tsuchiura is just next door to Tsukuba, a modern science city and destination for many foreign researchers in Japan. As one such researcher, the book helped me understand some seemingly unexplainable remnants of old practices that still persist. I couldn't put the book down. The stories of lives jump out of the pages.

well written and interesting.

A collection of interviews with people who tell stories of their lives in a small japanese village from about 1890 to 1930. Arranged by occupation, all are very interesting. One of the most intriguing aspects of the book is the commonality the stories share with my own American relatives (as to the hardships of farm life, what people did for fun, etc.). The book even occasionally slips into a "when I was a kid we had to walk two miles uphill in the snow" sort of mode, but this makes many of the stories all the more touching.

Good book to learn the foundations of COM

COM is built on top of RPC. This book is a bit dated, but still a good guide for learning the technology that COM is based on. COM will make much more sense if you take a little time to learn RPC first.

The most cogent guide to RPC programming I have seen.

The authors take the reader from the very first steps to rather complex applications of Remote Procedure Calls. Along the way, they explain how RPC works, and why it is one of the better tools for implementing true client/server systems.

Despite a very few factual errors (the page on memory allocation using RpcSs contains one) and despite a too-short description of when to use which memory allocator, I rate this book at nine out of ten. For a perfect ten, the authors will have to include material on secure, authenticated, RPC, too.

If you do serious DCE or MS RPC programming, or if you are trying to learn the ropes: Try to find a copy. And no, mine is not for sale. ;-)

After attending a Millennium Woman Friend-Raiser in LA I decided to buy this book. I was inspired at the event, but the book brought it all home. As a woman I feel that this book speaks directly to me and the issues and fears I have about my own success and abilities. I now have my goals on my mirror and I am a Millennium Woman!

This book has been such a terrific guide for me.

It has helped me to organize, set goals, learn when to say yes and when to say NO. It opened my eyes to so much, I was amazed at how little I knew about finances, saving, debt, goals, self-esteem and even Real Estate. The author, although a man, seems so in-tune to the struggles of today's women--single, married, divorced, widowed, single-parent--all women and gives answers and guidelines--not just philosphies and baloney. It is a "nuts and bolts" book that gives you step by step instructions on how to turn your life around and be prosperous, happy and successful and he does it in a lively and sometimes humorous manner.

I am so happy I bought this book-it has been very, very insightful. Take the time-you'll be glad you did.

I was given this book as a gift and, at the giver's request, took time to really read the book. This book has been an inspiration to me financially, spiritually (although it is not a Christian book, the author definitely writes with God in mind), and personally. It discusses what women should do to become independent and move forward in life. It got me out of my comfort zone and woke me up to the possibilities available to any person. The author truly desires to assist women in bettering their positions and to not let others, male or female, control their lives. The author's points and suggestions have improved my position and my relationships with my children and spouse. If you want to improve your financial situation, this book is a must-read. Put it in your personal library!

Millennium Woman is a great book for ALL women: We are all either single, divorced, married, with kids or widowed and trying to make it. Written from the perspective of the "Other Team" author O'Shaughnessy makes it clear that women must use the same formula for success as men. We must lead balanced lives before we can achieve financial freedom. EASY to READ!
