COM is built on top of RPC. This book is a bit dated, but still a good guide for learning the technology that COM is based on. COM will make much more sense if you take a little time to learn RPC first.

The most cogent guide to RPC programming I have seen.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1997-10-15

The authors take the reader from the very first steps to rather complex applications of Remote Procedure Calls. Along the way, they explain how RPC works, and why it is one of the better tools for implementing true client/server systems.

Despite a very few factual errors (the page on memory allocation using RpcSs contains one) and despite a too-short description of when to use which memory allocator, I rate this book at nine out of ten. For a perfect ten, the authors will have to include material on secure, authenticated, RPC, too.

If you do serious DCE or MS RPC programming, or if you are trying to learn the ropes: Try to find a copy. And no, mine is not for sale. ;-)

'Mig Killers" a killer of a history review.

Author O'Connor is to be commended for his painstaking efforts to preserve for the record the stories of some of Ameraca's truely great heros during a time when almost no one appreciated their service, sacrafice, or professional competence.

United States Naval Aviators, during the Vietnam War years were a select group of men. Navy carrier pilots were even more select. "Mig Killers of Yankee Station" is the story of navy fighter jocks who flew off of the carrier decks in Tonkin Gulf who actually met and defeated the enemy in the air. Written in their own words or the words of surviving family members or squadron mates O'Conner captures the the feelings of elation and apprehension these men felt in performing their duties amidst hostile skies and political ineptatude. .Each printed page allows the reader to experience the sight of burstin flack and SAMs, the smell of JP-5 and sea air, the feel of cold sweat running down your back on a nightime carrier approach or the frustration of malfunctioning guns or missiles in combat.

The book is generously filled with photographs and colorful illustrations depecting the men, ships and aircraft that made the history of those troubled times. After thirty years,in an America that wants to forget there ever was a Vietnam War,O'Connors work stands out as the most comprehensive coverage of these devoted warriors to date.

Mike O'Connor rates five stars for this excellent view of tailhook MiG killers. Aside from the high production values and tremendous variety of photos, paintings and maps, the text not only corrects some of the official record, but updates it as well. The Navy history office has concentrated increasingly on Vietnam subjects in recent years, and would have been well advised to publish this book itself.

Debrief: an indispensable resource for those interested in the Vietnam air war.

MiG Killers Of Yankee Station by military aviation expert Michael O'Connor is a riveting, comprehensively researched account of the Navy's MiG airwar in Southeast Asia. Filled with interviews and conversations with carrier pilots who fought in the Vietnam War, featuring black-and-white photographs on every page, and enhanced with few original color works of art, as well as an in-depth narration revealing just what it was like to fight and risk one's life in the skies, MiG Killers Of Yankee Station is very highly recommended for Military Aviation enthusiasts and American Military History reference collections.

I was a Navy Photographer ,Stationed aboard the Bon Homme Richard CVA31. During that time I made 3 Vietnam cruises aboard the Bonny Dick. I lived and experienced what is talked about in this book It does a great job discribing what it was like. I have several photographes in this book, which I gave Mike in helping him to show what the pilots and crew members went through on Yankee Station. We need more booke like this published. I would be glad to assist anyone interested in working on this subject matter. We need more books and perhaps a movie on the experience of the carrier pilots and the brave sailors aboard those carriers.

This book describes all of the Navy Air-to-Air encounters in Viet Nam, successes as well as failures. The author tells of what went right as well as what went wrong; and the elations and frustrations that resulted. Some of his conclusions will not make people happy, but those conclusions are well researched and documented. Mr. O'Connor also discusses the political and strategic climate throughout the war as related to the air battles. This gives the reader a more complete picture of the air war.
My pilot and I were officially credited with shooting down a MIG-21 in North Viet Nam, and are mentioned in this book. The account of the mission, as well as the other events surrounding it, was accurate to the best of my knowledge.
This book is a great read. It puts everything in perspective for both those who were there as well as those who weren't.

This book has been such a terrific guide for me.

It has helped me to organize, set goals, learn when to say yes and when to say NO. It opened my eyes to so much, I was amazed at how little I knew about finances, saving, debt, goals, self-esteem and even Real Estate. The author, although a man, seems so in-tune to the struggles of today's women--single, married, divorced, widowed, single-parent--all women and gives answers and guidelines--not just philosphies and baloney. It is a "nuts and bolts" book that gives you step by step instructions on how to turn your life around and be prosperous, happy and successful and he does it in a lively and sometimes humorous manner.

I am so happy I bought this book-it has been very, very insightful. Take the time-you'll be glad you did.

I was given this book as a gift and, at the giver's request, took time to really read the book. This book has been an inspiration to me financially, spiritually (although it is not a Christian book, the author definitely writes with God in mind), and personally. It discusses what women should do to become independent and move forward in life. It got me out of my comfort zone and woke me up to the possibilities available to any person. The author truly desires to assist women in bettering their positions and to not let others, male or female, control their lives. The author's points and suggestions have improved my position and my relationships with my children and spouse. If you want to improve your financial situation, this book is a must-read. Put it in your personal library!

We must lead balanced lives before we can achieve financial freedom. EASY to READ!

I stumbled on this book by accident and I'm so glad I did! This beautifully illustrated book brings the passover story to life. It introduces a new custom of placing a cup for Miriam the prophet on the seder table to honor her and the women of the passover story. We introduced this new tradition at our seders this year and it was met with great appreciation by all in attendance.

Stresses women's role in Passover and Exodus

I am a Lutheran church librarian. This excellent book about Passover stresses the female role in the story. So often Bible stories stress only men's roles. I buy those, but also go out of my way to find those that stress roles of women to inspire our daughters and granddaughters. Women are religious too, and have great roles to play. This story is told from Miriam's point of view. A modern day little girl named Miriam is told the Passover story by her Mom. We thus go back in time, seeing the Passover story from the ancient Miriam's point of view: the fact that she prophesied her brother Moses' birth and that he would be the Israelite leader; the role of Moses' mother, pharoah's wife, and even the two midwives who birthed Moses but refused to kill him as ordered by the pharaoh, the first act of civil disobedience reported in the Bible. As a Lutheran, I enjoy the Midrashic legendary spin in stories such as this. It adds life to worn and dusty stories. Several other important things about this book are: a modern day song about Miriam on the back cover for use at home or in Sunday School, a historical note at the end of the story, a bibliography for those who want to know more, and the fantastic illustrations in blue-violet and burnt orange done in watercolor, by Bob Dacey, chair of the Visual Arts Dept. at Syracuse University. This is an excellent book both for Jewish and Christian children. For those of you who may also be interested in other Biblical storybooks about girls and women, I can suggest A Prayer for the Earth: The story of Naamah, Noah's Wife by Sandy Sasso. In this book Naamah is seen as the preserver of all the plants on the earth, at God's direction. Noah handles the fauna, Naamah handles the flora. A lovely story. Another is Mary's First Christmas by Walter Wangerin, Jr., in which Mary retells the story of Jesus' birth to the young Jesus. Others are Young Mary of Nazareth by Marianne Mayer, Queen Esther Saves Her People by Ruth Golden Gelman, Queen of Sheba (don't know author) and Ruth Sanderson's Tapestries: Stories of Women in the Bible, with illustrations resembling Victorian petit-point. I would like to find an illustrated storybook on Martin Luther, Ruth and Naomi, Martha and Mary and the like done as well as Miriam's Cup.

It is wonderful that books are being written that show women's influence in Biblical times, especially for children. Miriam is an inspiring heroine in her care of the Hebrew people, bringing them water even in the driest desert. That's why we drink from Miriam's Cup on Passover and it is her story we read here.

My 7-year-old daughter, who is at the beginning of her religious education enjoyed the story and the illustrations and we now have "Miriam's Cup" at all our Passover seders.

I am a senior consultant with a computer-consulting firm. We used "The Mission Primer" to think through our company mission. As we went through the process I discovered the subtle genius in its design. Gast's Laws sparked invaluable dialogues with multiple points of view and unique interpretations. These differing points of view forced a sort of self-discovery, or self-examination, which eventually created a collective focus that did not exist before. You realized that everyone had different perceptions of the business. Using this system offers a great deal of flexibility. We got excellent results. "The Mission Primer" is easy to follow, and highly effective. I give it high marks and you can't beat the price.

These authors have a great writing style. This is a subject matter that has a potential to be very, very dry but the authors have somehow made it enjoyable. If they get into hardcore calculations and derivations that you might be a little rusty on, they anticipate that (I assume from lots of students' feedback) and include appendixes at the end of each chapter so that you don't need to run off and find the corresponding chapter in one of your math/physics/chemistry textbooks. They also have a very useful nomenclature guide (in the first book only) in case you keep forgetting what certain symbols mean and what units they are in. The footnotes are great and keep things from getting too dry. Overall, I would definitely recommend these three books.

Note: Unless you have a fetish for hard covers, get the paperbacks; they're half the cost. When I bought these books from amazon.com, it was very confusing to figure out which books to get. Here are the ISBN's of each of the three books in the series. This will save you some headache:

Electrochemistry 1: Ionics
ISBN: 0306455552 (paperback)

Electrochemistry 2A: Fundamentals of Electrodics
ISBN: 0306461676 (paperback)

Electrochemistry 2B: Electrodics in Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, and Environmental Science
ISBN: 0306463253 (paperback)

Review Date: 2003-07-26
The Modern Electrochemistry volumes are truly excellent textbooks and references for all aspects of electrochemistry.
Whether you're dealing with corrosion, electrolytic processes, batteries, or biochemistry, the electrochemistry is fully explained here. The authors go into a great deal of detail topics while maintaining a very familiar, easy-to-read tone. There are also plenty of interesting historical footnotes which serve to lighten the text.

These books are written for electrochemists interested in the chemical mechanisms behind electrochemical processes. Applications of these processes are treated very briefly. If you are more interested in real-world applications of these processes, other texts may serve you better.

The text comes in three volumes, which is problematic. It is difficult to find all three at most booksellers. Many online booksellers (including Amazon) don't distinguish between the volumes in their catalogs; I had to go by ISBN numbers to ensure I got the complete set. But it was well worth the trouble.

The difference of this second Ed. from the first one is huge; the author actually rewrote ca. 50% of the first volume (Ionics) and ca. 70% of the second volume (Electrodics, still in writing), covering literature up to later 90's.

For classroom use, the most important addition of the edition is the problem set, which are extremely helpful for students on introductory level.

It was a great honor of me to be invited by the author to write part of the problem sets for all chapters in Vol.1 and a few chapters in Vol.2, and I can tell you that the author and the problem writers put in a lot of effort to elucidate the fundamental electrochemistry while also help original thinkings of the students on more advanced electrochemistry issues.

The style of the authors is extremely simple, and reading this book is like reading a story book. you would find it quite difficult to keep the book down once you have picked it up.

An absolutely fantastic book, though slightly on the costlier side.

The illustrations are beautifully done and the writer has created a story which captures a childs wildest imagination. What makes it most unique is the usage of Spanish and English in teaching children both languages. This has the potential to break down cultural barriers before they are formed. A Monster is Hiding/El Monstruo Escondido is a charming story of a child who fears that a monster is hiding under her bed. The illustrations are unique in that the illustrator chose to bring the child directly into the world of the story with a cut-paper, watercolor, and photograph collage using photos of an actual child.

The creatures that the child first imagines under her bed are angular, with large menacing mouths and sharp claws. Their bodies are made from the same patterns as the bedding, suggesting that the monsters are the imaginings of the child seeing various shadows and shapes in the dim light of her bedroom. As the story progresses and the child confronts her fear, the angles and colors soften. The real monster is kind and more human in aspect, and therefore is nothing for the child (or anyone else) to fear. This also suggests that dreams can be molded and controlled by the dreamer--resulting in happy dreams rather than nightmares.

Another aspect of this book is its Spanish-English bilingual presentation. With the engaging story, it also presents a comfortable vocabulary that assists a parent in teaching a second language to their child. This kind of book is a marvelous opportunity to introduce a different language while children are still in their language forming stage--where the introduction of a second language is both natural and easily learned. (It can also help parents who are also learning a second language, whether English or Spanish.)

Dobie tells the story of the impact that the introduction of the horse had on life in the Americas, with an emphasis on the American West. His historical research is good, citing a number of written sources (and even giving new perspective on Fremont or Pike).

But the real color of the book comes from his anecdotes, many of which come from discussions with cowboys and mustangers who lived through the final days of the open range in the American West. Great color, great stories throughout!

Highly entertaining, yet with good research and historical value. Wonderful insight into the character of horses.

Learn a little Spanish and a lot about some special horses
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-08
My major was "Spanish North American History," and my wife and I developed a ranch and bred horses for more than ten years. So, this book was down my alley. In fact, it was a book of assigned reading in a course I took. It is primarily about the Spanish BARB that the Spaniards brought to America, and that became the root stock of Mustangs that still run wild in many western states. They have bred into themselves qualities that make them special, especially as cow ponies, and explain why they are sometimes referred to as "rock horses," because they do not need to be shod. Dobie is as much a story teller as he is a historian with a style most becoming. He was born in the 1800s and knew the people and the times of which he speaks. Mexicans were most familiar with Mustangs, but the Plains Indians learned to handle them and became great riders in their own right, as when on the hunt. The Mustang was essential to the time in which they existed, and were the catalyst for the life-style of their day. Wealth was counted in the number of horses a brave had, and horse stealing was the avocation that pitted tribe against tribe at the expense of human life as well as horse flesh, much of which was eaten. Whites ate them, too, usually when either they or their horses played out. Times have changed, but there is another book that as a sequel to this one expresses the way in which it changed. I refer to A BEAUTIFUL, CRUEL COUNTRY, by Eva Antonia Wilber-Cruce who was born about the turn of the 20th century, and raised in Southern Arizona. The rock horses played a significant role in their lives when horses were still essential in such a rough land. I recommend The Musangs be read first, then Eva's book, for those who even yet have a fondness for horses. If I were still raising horses, I would, after reading these books, look seriously for a rock horse I could call my own. I cannot believe how much I learned from reading Dobie's book. Little is left to the imagination.

Wow.

What would the Old West have been without the Mustang? Frank Dobie regales the reader with tales ranging from the legendary Pacing White Mustang to more obscure but nonetheless fascinating legends such as Blue Streak and Starface, to insight into the mysterious origins of the breed.

I read this book for the first time years ago, and I still can't get enough of it! This book is must-read for any horse lover or Wild West enthusiast!

I don't remember when or how I acquired this book, but it was a childhood favorite of mine. I am now nineteen, and could still quote stories from it to you. I used to refer to it as my "Bru Book", after Bru Bear...even though he wasn't my favorite character! ^_^ A wonderful read for children and parents to share.

This is an excellent book to share with elementary school-age children. Five loveable animal characters demonstrate the value of kindness, forgiveness, working together, etc. in a variety of fun adventures. I'd love to see another book like this one!

Several years ago a parent of one of my pre-kindergarten students brought me this book, asking if I would read several stories to my class. The children loved the stories and I loved the moral values they taught in a lighthearted way. Each of the five animal friends have their own human-like personalities and chacteristics which are easy to identify with. The friends learn and share with each other in realistic situations. The stories are written in such a way that I was able to share them with children in both christian and public classrooms. I enjoy giving this book to friends and acquaintences for their children; it is great.

BEST BOOK OUT THERE FOR YOUNG MILITARY KIDS!

This book was donated to each soldier in my husbands unit at Christmas time to send home to their children. It has been the best of the kids books for my five year old. She has taken this book with her to school to share with her class, and we read it every night before bed.
It puts not just what a hero is in words that little ones can relate to it also explains what Dad does and how he lives in ways that they can understand. Having a place to put a picture of their hero inside and one of them also makes it even more personal for your child or children. My 15 year old has even sat down and read this book with his younger brother(11) and sister(5). I would tell anyone that has a child or knows a child dealing with a deployment to buy this book...maybe even two so one can always travel with you!

THE book for every military child

This is a perfect book for the 4 - 8 year old child whose father is called to deploy overseas.

Written in a simple and elegant style that young children can read (or have read to them ); the accompanying pictures just beg to have Billy or Betty color them in and personalize the story. The two authors, one a mother of a deployed soldier, and the other a teacher, have collaborated on producing a book that is designed to explain, if not comfort, Dad's absence to his children.

While the term "hero" is grossly overused, if this book can help comfort a young child on dad's second, third, or forth deployment, then the book has done it's job.

Not only is the book highly recommended, but it would be certainly be helpful if the book was distributed to the children when Dad goes off on yet another deployment.

Great Book, Worth The Price!

This book is just wonderful! It really does explain what military daddies do! There is a place to put a picture of their dad in the beginning of the book and at the end a place to put a picture of your child/children because they are heroes too! It is a long book so like the other reviewer said it was probably meant for 4 and up. I bought it for my almost two year old and it is just great. She loves all books, so this is just another to add to the list.

A wonderful book that focuses on the positive

This book is a wonderful resource for families with a deployed father, and it's fun to read too. This book focuses on the positive aspects of dad's deployment - what he eats, where he sleeps, what dad is doing for others, how to keep in touch, etc... And I also love that it emphasizes the child's role in the sacrifice - they are heroes too! The story and the illustrations will captivate children of all ages and help them feel better about being away from their dad. Highly reccommended!

If you are or have a military dad who is serving overseas then the book " My Dad's A Hero" is a perfect gift for his children. It will help you with your young children in understanding where daddy is and what he is doing. It is an uplifting little book with wonderful illustrations by Jen O. Robertson and a nifty little story line by Rebecca Christiansen and Jewel Armstrong.

I would think that even the youngest child could get something out of this book if read to them as they looked at the pictures on each page. Second to 6th grade students could read this book but all children will enjoy looking through it. The message is positive and comforting to small children.

I highly recommend this book for military families. It is a good little book and will be read over and over by small kids. I give it a children's book rating of FIVE Teddy bears!
