David Hey has written a simple, profound, and important book for helping us understand the Enneagram. With clarity and precision, he has taken this often hard-to-understand aspect of the Enneagram -- the Essence in each of us and how this relates to our Enneagram type and our search for meaning -- and made it available in a form that reads like poetry. As an Enneagram author myself (Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work" and "What Type of Leader Are You?"),I understand the challenges involved in taking this sometimes compex material and putting it into a form that others can readily understand and use. David has risen to this challenge.

The Enneagram and the teachings of Gurdjieff I have found to be too arcane for the casual reader. Hey's book The 9 Dimensions of the Soul provides an entertaining and informative analysis of some of this difficult material. As you read this book it is impossible not to begin to see how the enneagram applies to our own actions and everyone we deal with in our lives. This book also gives insight on why we behave the way we do. What I also found both useful and fascinating is how these profiles can be applied to the collective and how we work together. I would recommend this book to anyone who has seen a pattern in their own behavior.

In the past two decades many enlightenment books have been published. Some have fallen into the category of the trendy self-help variety. Nine Diminsions is about as far from those as can be imagined. It represents a great deal of care and thought on the part of its author. David Hey doesn't set forth easy answers to spiritual questions, free of any contribution on the reader's part. Here we find a path to self knowledge (and a way to know others as well) that can help us create and sustain meaningful relationships with those we love. The book is readable because it is obvious that Hey has spent considerable time thinking about his subject and his readers. He has written about a difficult subject with grace and courage.

I first learned about enneagram in a psychology course that I took. This ancient personality typing essentially places all people within nine personality categories. There are a number of parallels that relate to the results such as archetypes, specific personality traits, important incidents in childhood, colors, passions, and fixations. It's really quite fascinating.

With that said, the most interesting thing about enneagram is its accuracy. I have never seen a more accurate description, chillingly so. Used for personal understanding of the self and personal growth, it is an amazing tool.

When I saw The 9 Dimensions of the Soul, I had to have it. This book does a very good job of presenting the various aspects of the original enneagram system. Then, the author adds an additional layer to this information through connecting particular essences to each personality type. This only strengthens the potential use of this system as a means for self understanding.

A beautiful book on the enneagram!

I thought this book was terrific. I love Georgia O'Keefe and I've traveled to Lake George a couple of times, and it proved fascinating for me personally. But it's also a great read for anyone looking for a smart mystery. The main character has lots of wit. I can't wait for the next one.

Spectacular fall foliage and the beauty of the Queen of American lakes (Lake George) serve as the back-drop for an entertaining murder mystery involving the theft of previously unknown paintings by Georgia O'Keefe. O'Keefe fans in particular will enjoy the historical background that leads to the "discovery" of lost art. A great beach book.

Anne White has spent her life as a writer, editor and librarian. She has had short stories published in several magazines, including McCall's, Career World, Lake George Arts Project Literary Review, and Glen Falls Post Star. She holds degrees in English and Library and Information Studies. Affinity for Murder is her first novel. She lives in Glen Falls, NY.

Ellen Davies is occupying her uncle's old house in Lake George. Georgia O'Keeffe is one of Lake George's most notable figures, during the summers she spent in Lake George with her husband. Ellen is set to interview an art expert acquaintance of her new friend Diane's who is staying at her and her estranged husband's bungalow when they discover smoke, a fire in the bungalow...and a dead body:

"The partially burned body of a man lay on his side facing away from me. The handle of a long, thin knife or letter opener protruded from his back. Blood had puddled up around the wound and formed a grotesque strawberry mark on the man's tweed sport coat. The smell coming from the body and from the singed hair was sickening enough but it was the face, when I leaned sideways to look at it, that really started my stomach churning."

Anne White has written a thorough entertaining tale with punch lines galore, masterful description, and a plot intricate enough to pull the reader along until the final exciting denouement. Using Georgia O'Keeffe as a backdrop, her story has a "what if" and "it could happen" air about it that is compelling. Ms. White knows her O'Keeffe, and the stories and descriptions of her painting and life alone are enough to make this a great mystery. But, not content to rest on her laurels, Ms. White proceeds to write just about the perfect mystery.

An Affinity for Murder has it all...great characterization, action, eloquent writing, a heroine who is fun to follow, and a crackerjack plot line. She hides the culprit until the very end, and adds a witty twist just for fun. Excellently done, Ms. White! We would all love to keep following Ellen Davies! She is devilishly independent, intelligent, and savvy.

This mystery put all five of my senses right back in the beautiful Adirondacks where I was born and raised and lived untill I was 19. I could smell the wet leaves on the tall trees alongside Bolton Road and see their beautiful array of colors cluster after cluster. I could hear the wakes of the lake smashing against the docks at times and feel the smack of the cold Lake George air on my exposed face on a late October night. I could taste that freezing rain on my tongue during one of the most thrilling nights of the story. I am still thinking about all the characters, weeks after finishing the book, and hoping that Ellen and her friends return in a sequel. And yes, I have this feeling that if Georgia O'Keeffe and Anne White had had the opportunity to meet one another, they would have been best of friends.

Anne White's cozy small town mystery AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER delights by continuing her Lake George mystery series with a different sleuth, a journalist pursuing a story. Georgia O'Keefe's painting take center stage in this mystery.

Ellen Davies plans a feature story on the artist Georgia O'Keefe who spent her summers at Lake George. When she goes to visit an art critic Edward Maranville for background material, she discovers a fire and a body burned beyond recognition and a knife stuck in his back. As Ellen pursues the story, a group of paintings hidden in a locked closet vanish. Only the painting of the black iris remains behind but even that painting might become a dangerous possession. As Ellen researches her Georgia O'Keefe story, danger lurks in unexpected places as a murderer follows her path.

Anne White's AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER is a wonderful mystery read with a small town atmosphere. The reader sees another dimension to Lake George itself with her historical research as Anne White turns her focus on new characters as they explore part of the town's history and small town rumors. With the exploration of Georgia O'Keefe's work and her history in Lake George, Anne White adds a richness to this mystery through her sensuous descriptions of Georgia O'Keefe's flower paintings as well as discussions of the artist's technique, her relationship with the famous photographer Alfred Steiglitz and other corners of the art world. AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER is unforgettable --- a delight for mystery and art fans! As Anne White turns her vision to the art history of the Lake George town, the series grows organically, giving both newness and familiarity as the reader re-enters the wonderful community of Lake George.

Agnes Parker Girl in Progress, is one of the most sensational books I have read this year The story has an unique power to clasp and wrench it's readers into the realistic and charming life of the witty Agnes Parker. I related in depth with the story... Kathleen O' Dell has created a deep, and fascinating masterpiece. Agnes's emotions, life, friends and family are so alive. Their words and activity are like those of yours: we, as well as the cast of charcters in this story, face descions every day, it is our responsibilty to choose the right path KathleenO' Dell makes that possible with a fabulous novel suh as this.

From the eye-catching start to the twist at the end, Agnes has always seemed so real. The crispness of new glasses, her conversations with friends, and her reaction to people were so similar to mine that I could imagine she existed.

Kathleen O'Dell also wrote 'Ophie Out of Oz' for a slightly younger age group, about 3rd-5th grade instead of 5th-6th.

Kathleen O'Dell has hit the jackpot for "tweens" with her wonderful book, Agnes Parker...Girl in Progress. O'Dell's writing is superb, though the present-tense narration takes a few pages to get used to.

Agnes's character will jump out at anyone (girl or boy) going into 6th grade, and will cause those of us who remember our 6th grade year to alternately laugh, cry, giggle, or want to scream "That's not fair!" In describing Agnes's reactions from everything from enduring bullying at the hands of Peggy Neidermeyer, to needing glasses, to breaking her arm (and having to deal with a cast), to the ins-and-outs of friendship with her best friend Prejean and Joe, the new boy in school, O'Dell helps readers to understand the range of emotions and experiences a 6th grade girl feels.

The book begins the week before Agnes enters sixth grade, and should be a hit among 5th, 6th, and 7th graders, as well as any older "kids" who want to look back on the final year of elementary school. Highly recommended.

I love this wonderful book!!

I love Agnes Parker, I feel like she could be my best friend!! There are so many favorite parts in this book, I don't think I could even list them all. Agnes is going through changes in her life now that she is in sixth grade, and is not sure how things are going to be with her best friend Prejean. And then the new boy comes to town with a sad, sad secret, and Agnes is the perfect person to help him through the hard times. I also love the bully Neidermeyer, even though she can be so mean, I've known girls just like her, and the competition that happens between her and Agnes is so real, I couldn't believe how good this book is! Read it for yourself and see.

A very good synthesis

Review Date: 2004-10-25
John Warden's book earned high praise because of its author's role in planning operation Desert Storm, but although the book is a very good synthesis of air warfare theory it is not either groundbreaking or revolutionary. In fact most of its arguments were presented for the first time by the pioneers of air power of the 1920s and 30s like Giulio Duhet and William Mitschell. Warden's contribution has more to do with the revival of those forgotten theories and the presentation of a complete picture of aerial operations instead of inventing new methods of war. Central to his thesis is the idea that air superiority is crucial, that a campaign will be lost if the enemy has it, that in many circumsatnces it alone can win a war, and that its possession is needed before other actions on the ground or in the air can be undertaken.

Warden also places emphasis on thorough training saying that if something is going to be done in war, it ought to be practiced in peace, and if it has not be practiced, losses are likely to be high and the plan is unlikely to go as expected. He analyzes the three kinds of inderdiction (distant, indermediate and close) and he gives an interesting definition of the term "close air support": "It is an air operation that theoritically could and would be done by ground forces on their own, if sufficient troops or artillery were available".

The author repeats often the great value of striking the enemy's center of gravity, that timing is everything in the commitment of air reserves and that ground and naval forces can serve as an adjunct to air forces in the battle for air superiority. His opinion that fighting defensively is the worst way to fight an air war is uneiversally accepted as is his thesis that numbers are important, so important that a primary goal of the operational commander ought to be to make sure that his forces outnumber the enemy every time they meet. Modern research using the Lancaster equations has also proved his argument that the large force almost always inflicts greater absolute casualties on the smaller force and thath it also suffers less in the process.

John Warden also explains in the Epilogue how his concept of ideas was implemented in the Desert Storm campaign of 1991. In that case the enemy was visualized as a target system of five concentric rings (leadership, key production, infrastructure, population and field forces) with the leadership ring at the center. In the case of Iraq, the US goal was "to reduce the energy level of the entire system enough to reach our peace objectives" which were to eject "Iraq out of Kuwait and an Iraq that would not be a strategically threatening regional superpower for the next decade".

On the minus side of the book are the extremely poor black and white pictures.

Just outstanding and and very easy to read.

A Brilliant "Must Read" Synthesis of Air Power Thinking
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-24
Colonel John A. Warden III was one of the most distinguished officers of his generation. A veteran fighter pilot, he was--is--as well a true defense intellectual--not the sort of individual often touted by the so-called "defense reform movement," but a true warrior-scholar in the classic image of, say, a J. F. C. Fuller--or a George Patton. Not one to shy away from controversy, Warden was convinced in the 1980's that the United States Air Force--had strayed away from its first principles. It had become a stove-piped, tribal organization, riven by discord and confusion between its "strategic" and "tactical" communities. Warden, in this brilliant work (written as a thesis at the National Defense University), posited an exciting new vision of the centrality of air power in national defense. This book served as an important departure point for the service's subsequent "Global Reach--Global Power" strategic planning framework issued in 1990. By that time, Warden was running Checkmate, a key office in Air Force planning. Through his own initiative and vision, he and a small team of "weapons officers" planned Instant Thunder, the first major response to Saddam Hussein's aggression in the Gulf. Warden briefed Instant Thunder to the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff (the Chief was away), and then on his suggestion to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Colin Powell. Powell sent him to CENTCOM to brief Norman Schwarzkopf. His reaction was enthusiastic, and Warden was directed to brief Instant Thunder in the Gulf, to the CENTAF air component commander, General Charles Horner. Horner, brilliant in his own right, accepted much of what Warden said. But the personal chemistry between the two men was bad, and Warden returned to the States, leaving behind a small staff of acolytes and experts, most notably Lt. Col. David A. Deptula. It was the partnership of Deptula, Gen. Buster Glosson, Gen. Horner, and (back in Checkmate) John Warden that made the Desert Storm air campaign a success. After the war, Warden became commander of the Air Command and Staff College, making notable (and badly needed) changes to its curriculum. This book is a "must read" by anyone who would consider themselves a military and/or air power professional. There are Americans alive today because of John Warden's work. Warden never made general, largely because of petty jealousies by senior people above him. He was--is--a consumate professional and true patriot: never complaining, never self-advocating, always keeping true to his core beliefs. But his truest legacy is this book and the thinking it has inspired--thinking that has lead to five notable American victories over the last decade. Buy it, read it, keep it, use it!

A must for the business or military strategist!

Col. Warden adds new material to this important work on strategy, especially new material on what happened after the Gulf War. This book is many things. It is a history of airpower. It is a fresh look at the application of airpower. It is a guide for anyone in the military or business world who wants to compete or attack a system. Very readable. With Col Warden's reputation as the architect of the Air Campaign against Iraq, he has demonstrated that he can apply his ideas in real world situations. Outstanding read.

This book does not dissapointed , you could learn chess tactic & subsequently improve your game .

I had bought this book last month at Times Bookstore and the price is only USD34 , equal to RM114 . With Jusco Card I got 10% discount from the price. And I wonder why the price here is more than USD200!

There is no doubt that Alekhine was a genius, way ahead of his time in his style of attacking chess. If you are like me, you will go green with envy if you play through these games and see how he conjured combinations from the simplest looking of positions. I believe that Alekhine was the inspiration for great later players such as Tal and, of modern times, Kasparov and Shirov. If you don't have a collection of Alekhine's games, you could do no better than buy this book.

This book is a classic and amust read for any serious chess student.13th world chess champion Garry Kasparov himself says this in his forward to this book. The book is a combination of 3 books,2 of which are analysed by Alekhine himself and the other is a book by former British champion CHOD Alexander. Both authors analyse the games critically and explain the ideas and plans behind the games. The selection of games and the opponents definitely don't dissappoint-in the 1st book there are many unknown players but the games have high quality, while in the 2nd world class players enter the scene like Capablanca(1927 world championship),Bogoljubov(1929 and 1932 W'ch and tournament games) ,Euwe(1935 and 1937 W'ch and tournament games),Nimzovitch,Rubinstein,Keres,Reshevsky,Em.Lasker,Tarrash amongst others. In the game Alekhine tells HOW he goes about achieving his aim,WHAT plan he chooses when he gains the advantage and WHY,and HOW he goes about converting his advantage. Make sure you buy this book because it will cause a revolution in your thinking and will widen your scope to STRATEGIC CHESS and ATTACKING CHESS.

Indispensable!

On making acquaintance with some of Alekhine's games in my youth, I realized that chess was a game of inexhaustible richness and beauty. A generation later, I still derive inspiration and delight from these remarkable battles. If you must limit your game collections to those of three players, I would include Alekhine's name alongside Kasparov and Fischer. And if you could only choose one volume of Alekhine's games, this is the one to get. There are 118 games, with the original annotations by Alekhine himself. In addition, there are valuable and unobtrusive footnotes by Grandmaster John Nunn, containing corrections to the analysis, performed with the benefit of historical hindsight and the assistance of modern computers.

This is a straight game collection, i.e., there is no attempt at a biography, no list of tournament and match results, no dramatic prologue setting the stage for each contest, no trendy puzzle section. You will find a player index and an opening index. The text is in two column format with figurine algebraic notation. The diagrams aren't as crystal clear as those of Gambit Publications, but they're adequate.

Gargoyles have gotten to be very popular recently, and any gargoyle fan ought to get the book _American Gargoyles: Spirits in Stone_ (Clarkson Potter) by Darlene Trew Crist, with photographs by Robert Llewellyn, because American gargoyles are fun. It wasn't the original job of gargoyles to be fun. One of the explanations of how gargoyles got into their exalted positions in churches is that they were placed there to entice pagans to come and worship at Christian locales. Those who ran the churches thought that pagan symbols, and scary ones at that, were a good marketing ploy. Perhaps we American moderns are simply amused by carvings of fearsome dragons, but there are plenty of gargoyles shown here that are deliberately humorous caricatures.

The pictures are a treat. This is not a big, coffee-table book, but there are scores of pictures from many American sacred, commercial, and academic buildings. Though American gargoyles reflect the traditions of Europe, many are truly American. The University of Pennsylvania, for instance, has a strictly medieval style of quadrangle, complete with gargoyles, but one of them is a football player. At Washington National Cathedral, there is a gargoyle showing a crooked politician; he has horns, a big belly, a cigar, and a pocket full of dollar bills. There are a pair of gargoyles there which were given by a grandmother in thanks for her two grandsons. One is angelic and one is demonic, and she never said which is which; the grandsons are now grown up and still don't know. A weeping sea turtle is there as a statement of environmental protection. Out of the mouth of a monstrous duck stares a tourist with a camera, a payback from the carver who was the subject of thousands of pictures as he worked.

_American Gargoyles_ could have been a lot bigger, but Crist has included a reading list for those who want to see more. It is a good-looking and informative book.

I was a little skeptical when I first picked up "American Gargoyles: Spirits in Stone" but a friend had reccomended it so I decided to read it. Boy, am I glad I did! If I hadn't I would have missed out on the wonderful details, breathtaking pictures and an all around fascinating history of American Gargoyles. The pictures are well shot, and I have to admit, were the first thing that caught my eye. But, when I sat down to read the text the author shared all these captivating little details about the gargoyles which I loved! The author tells you the story behind a particular gargoyle and if there is anything special you should look for when you see it. This book was so fascinating that I was inspired to take a trip to some of the sights mentioned in the book and check out the gargoyles for myself. Highly recommended! Unique, well-researched and a great read. It has wonderful illustrations & 3D images to illustrate a unique concept that binds both eastern & western fascination with our inner/outer world. A good coffee-table book for conversations, will look forward to the DVD of the characters in the near future!

Anyone who shies away from "alien theories" because they seem flighty or out-of-touch with reality will be gratified to discover this excellent text about the possibility of extra-terrestrial life. Both the origins of alien beliefs (including Indian mystical texts, which include respected yogic systems such as agni yoga) as well as modern, physical encounters with alien forms are explored. Technical evidence is presented without losing the wonder and sense of the mystical. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in reading more about what might exist beyond Planet Earth.

A Must Read!

One of most interesting books I have read in quite awhile, Anatomy of The Human Grey Body takes you through the concept of Greys, abductions, and how we perceive the reality around us.
Rather than simply being a book of one person's opinion, this book uses several examples about Greys and consciousness through history, with all works cited, going into great detail about the Jivatma, as the Grey is called in the East through many religions, including Hinduism.
Anatomy of The Human Grey Body takes an interesting and unique look at the extraterrestrial beings people claim to have seen, that are typically referred to as Greys. As well, the book takes a brief look at some of the anomalies witnessed by people around the world. Whether the greys are actually a separate being, or an extension of our selves in some way, is discussed throughout the book, as well as further discussion into whether we actually create the images in our own minds and then transpose them onto photographs.
While the author is discussing other possible answers to many of the questions that plague many of us today, he is careful not to completely discard some of the possibilities that already exist. This book is simply another's personal speculation and debate on what some of these anomalies might be, based on his views and on the historical beliefs of different people in the eastern hemisphere. The book talks about how western belief tends to focus more on what it might be in terms of extraterrestrials, while eastern belief tends to focus more on what it might be in relation to the self and how these two different views have come about.
Greys could be any number of things; it depends on the individual and their beliefs that determine their view of what Greys really are. Anatomy of The Human Grey Body simply gives another view of what Greys could really be.
The book is short and concise, yet it does not short change the reader on any topic, delving into detail on easy topics like the existence of extraterrestrials and hard ones, like multidimensional planes.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing more about the world around them and have always wanted to pick up that curtain of reality that separates us from what we perceive and what truly exists.
A great read!

O'Dell's metaphysics is a good explanation for paranormal events such as alien abductions and UFO phenomena. What a refreshing UFO publication that never mentions government conspiracies which is just an absurd notion of military intelligence! Original work from a maverick philosopher! Hope to see more from this author.

This ia a definitive look through pictures and text on the deeper meaning behind grey body morphology. The pictures are fantastic and the text is insightful, providing new ideas behind such a mysterious subject.

Coffin Texts

This review is for the 1977-1978 editions.

This book is a direct translation into English of all of the Middle Kingdom Coffin Texts. These are the religious writings placed in tombs to aid the dead's entry and existence in the afterlife, although a small number contain mythical stories. For a serious student of Egyptology this is an essential resource. Faulkner is conscientious, providing notes to explain corrupted, doubtful, and untranslatable text.

One thing must be kept in mind: this book is not intended for beginners. There is no commentary for the spells, and little explanation for the many names, allusions, and references, which would have made this work very much longer. If you do not have a broad knowledge of Egyptian mythology, most of this material will be confusing.

Other than a commentary, the only feature which would make this book more complete would be a copy of the main diagram from the Book of Two Ways.

This is an essential book by Faulkner, and very convenient by combining three separate volumes into one in this edition. I've finished the Pyramid Texts, Book of the Dead, and the Mythical Origin of the Egyptian Temple by E.A.E. Reymond, which is a cosmogonical overview of the Edfu temple inscriptions. This much more follows the form of the Pyramid Text writing style, and fills in many gaps about their religion. Any Egyptologist would benefit from the read, which will take a while.

There are not words to praise late Dr. Faulkner for the impressive task he had undetook at translating the 7 volumes of the "editio princeps" of the valuable Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts, like he had already done with the Pyramid Texts in 1969. Anybody interested in ancient Egyptian religion and funerary literature must own a copy of this edition, whether under this "omnibus edition, 3 vols. in 1", or the extended edition in 3 vols. MOreover, a new reprint of the same is badly in need for it is very difficulto to find it at hand. So that you known: if you have the chance, and you are looking for an authoritative, researched and scholarly translation: THIS IS THE TITLE YOU MUST OWN1

I am an avid reader of books. This book hasn't even made it to my bookcases because I keep it on my desktop. I frequently open it to gain an insight or message that helps me to look at and live my life differently. Because the messages are so thought provoking and timeless I give this book as gifts to friends & family members. That's a five star rating in my book.

In an imperfect world, we all need guidance. Sometimes we can't navigate through life's problems on our own. This book has never failed to lift my spirit. In beautiful language, Jenny Boylan has put down on paper these inspired messages. And in the process she has given all of us who read The Angel Messages a priceless gift. This book is filled with wisdom and hope. If you want to feel better about yourself and improve your spiritual life, read this book!

When you feel the need for a friend who is filled with inspirational and comforting words, then just pick up this book and open it to any page. I guarantee you, that the page you begin reading will be exactly what you need to read. This book is confirmation that there are angels among us...just look at the cover and read the incredible story behind the photo. If that isn't enough to convince you- open the book and look; read the loving messages. After you've read only a few- you will believe it must have been an angel who wrote all these angelic words of wisdom.

Also, I spoke with Jenny at a book-signing and she told me that she wrote this book in a matter of hours in one night...the messages just came through her! That is incredible...awe inspiring... angelic...proof that angels are among us. There is hope and love in this world...in all of us...just take the time to look!

I ordered Art as a Way of Life from Heron Dance (along with several other items as gifts) around the holidays. This book is spectacular and an inspiration for all who are creative or searching for their creativity! It is a pleasure to read and see. The layout is as superb as the quality of content. One item I ordered as a gift was slightly damaged. I called and they sent a replacement out same day with postage paid envelope for my return.....AND I got a real person (pleasant and helpful to boot) on the phone. I plan to order more from them. I highly recommend them for their product and what they stand for. Laura ~ Arlington VA

"When this old world starts getting you down," open this book of beauty. Rod's exquisite watercolors take you to a place of quiet and contemplation, while Ann's well-chosen quotes and her own words of truth will lift you into your own possibilities. And...the format and presentation make this book stand out above others of its kind. I will give this as a gift to all my friends. But I will always keep one for myself.

Great words, wonderful art -- a marvelous combination. The art needs the words more than the words need the art. A great compilation, whether you're a lover of words and ideas for your wild soul, or you appreciate nature watercolors -- or both.
