I bought REVELATIONS thinking that it was a good religious book. In this day in age of uncertainty, I was looking for some answers. But it seems that this book is not religious; it is not even serious.

I gave it to a friend in the hopes that someone might enjoy it. She seems to love it, and keeps quoting me passages. The 4-stars above are an average of my review and hers.

This book gives no answers, only jokes: humor-jokes.

Although a bit dated, containing strips related to the Y2K craze here and there, this little book is still otherwise as funny and timely as any commentary on the computer industry could be. The X-Men and Borg references are absolutely hysterical. If you work in a tech job, you should be reading User Friendly.

Amusing, but not for everyone (not even all geeks :-)

"Am thinkink. Erwin, to fight such big powerful company as AOL, am to be fightink fire with fire. Da?"
"Umm...what did you have in mind?"
"Am to becomink half computer, half human, like Borg. Then to become super administrator of all Borg functions."
"That means...you'll become..."
"Da. I will becomink root of all evil."
"Don't do it, Pitr! Don't go to the bad place!"
- Pitr the techie and Erwin the AI, in conversation

After opening with a few post-Y2K-bust strips, the Columbia Internet crew having stockpiled lots of soda and pork rinds for the occasion, the book settles into its more usual long-running plot threads.

Stef's been given the title "Manager: S&M." ("It stands for SALES AND MARKETING you depraved monkeys.") In his efforts to sell a line of products the same way that the Pokemon empire does their stuff, he persuades Pitr to make collectible Unix text editors. Pitr, in fact, goes through several evil little anti-Unix projects in the book to keep his hand in as a budding Evil Genius.

Other developments in the continuing story:
- AJ struggles to figure out how to court Miranda properly (badly timed in light of the "I love you" virus).
- Stef (who as a Windows user sees Unix holy wars as an added bonus of his job) makes the mistake of interfering in Miranda's life, which leads to a lot of Matrix crossover references.
- Mike becomes a Sims addict. ("Hey! Are you *allowed* to have four wives?")
- Greg's tech support calls turn into a game-help hotline.
- Pitr has an evil twin brother in Sales who affects the same fake accent.
- Introducing Sid Dabster, the aging ex-HP tech who becomes something of a blood enemy of Pitr's.

And, of course, the fantasy elements, such as:
- Parallels between Steve Case of AOL and Anakin Skywalker.
- Greg's Linux daemons (think "shoulder angel" here).

For computer geeks only, but in that niche excellent

Why five years for me between his first and second book I cannot explain except for 185 others read first but the wait was worth it. His underlying situations along with a streaming plot really make the book run. I will now continue on to whatever else he has written because I find his writing enjoyable as any other Author of thrillers he is right up with with DeMille, Clancy, Higgins and the others. I highly recommend this book.

I've stumbled across "Games of the Hangman" by accident and was hooked by the non-stop action. Now 5 years later, I stumbled across "Rules of the Hunt" and am enjoying, once again the very dangerous adventures of Hugo Fitzduane. Indeed looking forward to reading the "Devil's Footprint" (look for my review). Mr. O'Reilly's prose is straightforward and clear with a very tight plot. The characters come to life and the action sizzles. Not for the weak of heart. Terrorism is a very real threat that Mr. O'Reilly brings to light in all it's dark reality.

Love this book that I'm reading. I've never completed reading Jeremiah straight from the Bible cos I find it very heavy stuff. But after reading Run with The Horses, I'm beginning to appreciate this weeping prophet. I'm still mulling over those chapters that I've read and look forward to turning the pages still. Very sobering stuff in there for personal reflection. You can't ignore what you see/realise in yourself.

In this study of the life of Jeremiah the prophet we come to see how those who seek to serve the Lord do not have it easy by any means, but the troubles we encounter actually make us more passionate and purposeful and we become all the richer in the process. One of my favorite parts is on page 24 where he says, "Life is a continuous exploration of ever more reality. Life is a constant battle against everyone and anything that corrupts or diminishes that reality." Chapter 7 is especially insightful as it relates to the church today. He says, "What is wrong is to evaluate the worth of words and deeds by their popularity. What is scandalous is to approve only what is applauded. What is disastrous is to assume that only the celebrated is genuine." How true! One can't help but see the similarity of the priest Passhur in Jeremiah's day to the leader of the largest church in the United States today when you read: "Everyone loved to hear him: he was positive, affirmative, confident. He had the ability to draw out the best from everything. He was able to search the Scriptures and find texts that made the darkest days bright." I had to look at the front and see when this book was written. I thought for sure it had to be written in the 2000s, but it was 1983.

What do you do when times get tough? When life gets gritty? When the pressures of life squeeze you pencil-thin? Do you give up, give in, and despair? Or do you rise above the difficulties and uncertainties with faith and confidence? In "Run With the Horses: The Quest for Life at Its Best," Eugene Peterson takes us through the life of the prohpet Jeremiah and shows us how we can live adventurously, courageously, and excellently despite the challenges we will inevitably face.

"Run With the Horses" is not so much a commentary on the book of Jeremiah as it is a meditation on the life of Jeremiah. Though Peterson does move us chronologically through Jeremiah's life, he chooses only certain "episodes" or "situations" to discuss. Peterson ties his meditations on the life of Jeremiah to our lives as Christians, covering such topics as:

* Our identities as human beings with a definitive purpose.
* How we can be misled through deceptive teachings and words.
* How our choices can twart God's purposes for us.
* The importance of being honest and vulnerable before God.
* The significance of persistence and perseverance when enduring life's challenges.
* How God's ways and purposes often seem to contradict what we see and know from the world.

In essence, "Run With the Horses" is a meditation on the anatomy of a life of faith--a risky endeavor that is not for the faint of heart. Personally, I was more challenged and encouraged by this book than any other book I have read in recent memory. Highly recommended.

For those with "A thirst for wholeness"

Ancient Jeremiah as personal trainer? He of the many trials and tantrums?

Revisited via Eugene Peterson's knowledge and sensibilities, the Old Testament prophet comes alive; he compels present-day readers to "run the race." Jeremiah's words and works crackle with passion: visible, audible, and absorbable. You want to be like him--but luckier.

As relevant today as when first published, Run With The Horses is a superb merger of scholarship, story, and style. Personal and eloquent, Peterson's observations and exhortations on postmodern culture mirror the ancient seer's: He challenges our assumptions, assuages our fears, and cheers our God-given aspirations.

Brief selections from a wide range of writers enhance each thought-provoking chapter, and extensive End Notes point the way to further reading. If in doubt about an older book still being relevant, note the subtitle: The Quest for Life at Its Best.

Going to an engineering school, we deal strickly with SI units. For the most part the book deals with them too. But often, it seems like the problems that would be good for me to try, are in inchs and mils and lbs and all the imperical crap.

Now i only gave it 1 star less. Considering most of the engineering world laughs at imperical crap, which i dont blame them.

Besides for that, the rest of the book is pretty good. The lack of explanations could be worked on. (not in the problems, but in the information prior to the questions). I luckily took a physics on electricity before i got this. Which helped me alot, especially when dealing with OhmMeters.

I would by this book if you want to great in your EE classes. But you may want to have someone who can explain some things. Or just do some demensional analysis to figure out why things are the way they are. And resistance and others like that will make sense.

I initially picked up this book to do remediation on my first circuit analysis course, and have continued to use it through the second course. I call the Shaum Series my "secret weapon" for doing well in EE classes (and physics too, actually). The few pages of exposition at the beginning of each chapter are clear, concise, and mostly complete (Electric Circuits by Nahvi is more rigorous), and the problems, half with detailed solutions and half with just answers, are on-topic, perfectly-tailored, and numerous.

If you are taking circuit analysis courses, EE or not, you would be a fool to not have this book in your bag.

Excellent supplement on the topic of circuit analysis

Review Date: 2006-06-02
This is an excellent supplement for electrical technology and electrical engineering students taking a first course on circuit analysis. It is a particularly good companion to Boylestad's "Introductory Circuit Analysis", which is a standard circuit analysis text that has insufficient examples on several subjects. This outline starts with the analysis of DC resistive circuits, goes on to AC circuits, and also covers power circuits, transformers, and op-amps. There is a good chapter on complex numbers and phasors, an understanding of which is essential for the study of circuit analysis. There is no need of differential or integral calculus although the book uses derivatives in the chapters on capicitors, inductors, and transformers as needed for voltage-current relations. Even though there is not one integral shown in the book, the outline is still useful to engineers since circuit analysis courses mainly use only algebra.
This book also presents necessary tools such as PSPICE, the computer circuit analysis and simulation program for PC's. SPICE is the standard for analog circuit simulation across the electronics industry, and knowledge of its syntax is essential. The outline also covers the use of advanced scientific calculators in the context of solving actual problems.
Besides being a good source of examples and solved problems, this outline does a pretty good job of outlining the basic theory of circuit analysis. I highly recommend it.

Margaret Coel's Father John O'Malley series is a winner. It's nice mixture of modern-day life with a solid background in Native American history. In this book Ms. Coel highlights shadow dancing which is an ancient Indian custom. A modern-day cult leader has gathered a bunch of young, idealistic natives together to practice this ancient art as well as to prepare for the end of this present world and the beginning of another that will place the Indian at the top of society. But people are killed, and one of them is Vicky's ex-husband Ben Holden. As Vicky tries to clear her name in Ben's murder she uncovers a plot that will destroy the Wind River Reservation. These books are great. The characters are believable, and Father John is one of most real sleuths out there today. I highly recommend this series, but suggest that it should be read in sequence.

THE SHADOW DANCER is one of the best of the Wind River Series. Vickie Holden's ex-husband has been murder and she is the prime suspect. Father John's mission is about to lose its charter. Hearkening back to the 1880s and a cult that swept the reservation called the Ghost Dancers, a new prophet James Sherwood, called Orlando by his followers charms believers with his Shadow Dancers.
Father John looks for answers when summoned by the aunts of a young computer genius who has disappeared. Are all these happens related to test his endurance and perceptive skills. A fine mystery with sharp curves and tight storytelling.
A great read at any time.

I really enjoy this series of books set on the Wind River Reservation. When I first started this one, though, I was a little disappointed because it sounded like it was just rehashing all the same plot points from previous books - Father John and Vicky pining for each other, Ben Holden demanding that Vicky return to their marriage, a new assistant for Father John, and his superior's threatening Father John with the closing of the mission.

However, as soon as the stage was set with these events, things irrevocably changed. I found this mystery very intriguing and am anxious to see where the author takes things from here.

This is one of the best books in an excellent series. Margaret Coel spins a multi-layered plot which begins when Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden returns to her home at the Wind River Reservation after going to Denver to try to sort out her relationship with the reservation's priest, Father John. Her ex-husband, Ben, talks her into meeting him for lunch but their conversation ends in a bitter argument. When Ben is found dead, Vicky becomes a major suspect. Meanwhile Father John is dealing with the disappearance of a young Indian named Dean Little Horse and an Indian cult whose shadow dancers are twisting some of the early Arapaho religious practices. Added to this, Vicky is working on water rights for the Indians and Father John is battling his superiors who want to close the mission where he is the priest. Mix these elements together and you have an enjoyable reading experience with well-drawn characters and the beautiful Wyoming reservation as a background.

This is a fantastic book. Very easy to read. The authors, after discussing the basics of both Shamanism and Reiki, offer suggestions for combining the practices, and making the healing sessions interactive, in a way that should be non threatening to most clients. This book is great for anyone who already practices Reiki with clients. It explains the Shamanic way very clearly and gives a background on Reiki. Rather than go deeply into either practice, they recommend books on both Reiki or Shamanism if you need further information. The book then dedicates itself to techniques which bring both practices together. The book also gives some ideas for your practice, ways to hold space and ways to hold a client. It empowers the practitioner to try new things, and to share techniques with their client to allow them to become responsibile for their own healing. I would recommend it to anyone who may be stuck in their present way of working, or anyone who is looking for a greater connection with nature.

Read this book if you would like to integrate shamanism into your Reiki practice. The authors make it effortless. Each chapter presents easy to follow approaches, which will involve you and your clients in the process of making your Reiki sessions more powerful. The authors empower us to step confidently into our personal exploration of combining shamanism with Reiki by communicating to us their profound understanding of the nature of energy. We will understand that our success depends on our intention, our relationship to spirit, and our trust in the healing process. As we experiment with the book's healing methods and exercises, we will remember the authors' admonishment that healing tools are channels of healing energy, not the energy itself. After we close the covers of the book, we will be ready to open our basket of tools and use them to experience the rewards of incorporating these two important healing modalities.

As one who regularly takes self-guided, shamanic journeys and a certified (traditional) Reiki Teaching Master, I was fascinated with the authors' enlightened, intuitive approach to augmenting each method with the other. In fact, Roberts and Levy highlight what I view as the most powerful aspects of both traditional Usui Reiki and Shamanic healing practices, and blend them masterfully. Experienced practitioners can choose to employ the same mix as the authors, or use more or less of each, according to her "sense" of any one situation. This is a spiritually beautiful healing manual!

The marriage between Reiki and Shamanism is so obvious that the thought never even occurred to me. My shelves are lined with books on various types of Reiki, a bunch of Joseph Campbell (Journey of the Hero) like books, and a nice selection of personal journey, self help titles. In my Reiki practice, I have always encouraged my clients to use Reiki as a tool to self understanding. My position is that true healing comes from self acceptance and resonance with the genuine self. I don't know why I didn't see the connection sooner.

Reading Shamanic Reiki gave me a profound ah-ha moment. I've always felt that Reiki didn't quite describe what I do and what I believe that my clients need. In the past, I've been frustrated by individuals who simply want me to cure their ills. I know that the energies can relieve their pain. I also know that by continuing the same life patterns, these same individuals will soon find themselves in the exact same position. I've always thought that Reiki should be used not only to relieve the clients concerns but also as a way to understand the root of the problem.

Now I see that the authors of Shamanic Reiki suggest exactly this. They seek to ask more of both the practitioner and the client. This involves a partnership of sorts, a commitment to healing and personal growth on the part of both parties. This is the kind of practitioner I want to be.

Sharon Gilchrest O'Neill has assembled a collection of thoughts, quotations, and short exercises about grieving, inspired by work with the Connecticut Hospice, Inc. Each page contains a single thought or quotation, or a chance to express the reader's own thoughts or feelings about a particular topic. The book is divided into sections like Memories, Treasured Possessions, Happiness...Sadness, but it's sometimes unclear how the pages in each section relate to the section topic.

What struck me most about the book was that it would offer someone mired in the chaos of grief short bursts of thought, not requiring sustained reading or focused attention. For someone looking for a narrative thread, or a unifying philosophy, this book is not the place to look. I couldn't help but contrast it with Joan Didion's Year of Magical Thinking, a treatise on Didion's own process of grief, of working through the stages of feeling, thought, and emotion.

O'Neill's book, in contrast to Didion's treatise-like work, gives us bursts of thought, short quotations, and the chance to jot down a few of our own thoughts. About the quotations: I am often disconcerted by quotations in a book like this, where people are quoted out of context, and the reader is given nothing to put the quotation in context. Sometimes the quote is from someone familiar, like Carl Jung or Sinclair Lewis. We may not all be familiar with Jung's or Lewis' work, but we have something of a framework in which to place them. We can find their writings, read their novels. But, who is John Gray, and how does he relate to the experience of grief?

The writings of the author seem to be designed to provoke movement in grief, to give the grieving person a different perspective, a way to begin to think about how life has changed, and will change more.

Armchair Interviews says: For someone who needs some inspiration, a sense that they are not alone in this experience, and a way to find brief, accessible musings on grief, this book could be very helpful.

A wonderful way to comfort others (and ourselves)

This book is a wonderful tool for those of us who are "challenged" when it comes to providing emotional support to others at a time of loss and desire to do more than give/send garden variety bereavement cards. Because the book is spiritually uplifting rather than oriented towards religious beliefs and teachings, it is appropriate for giving to everyone from business associates to close friends and loved ones. A nice touch is a page near the beginning of the book where the sender can dedicate the book to an individual's memory.

Thank you for the comforting thoughts

I wish I had a copy of "Sheltering Thoughts" to read after my dad died. His sudden passing was confusing and numbing to me and all of my family.

I now keep this collection of inspirational thoughts close at hand. Its passages continue to give me a great deal of comfort whenever I'm missing Dad.

This book is my first recommendation to anyone experiencing the deep feelings of grief and loss.

Title: Sheltering Thoughts
AUTHOR: Sharon Gilchrest O'Neill
For life and death are one,
Even as the river and the sea are one.
Kahil Gibran

Losing a loved one is part of life but a most difficult and emotional time for all of us.
Sharon Gilchrest O'Neill has experienced grief both personally and professionally. As a psychotherapist and consultant, she joined the caring group of professionals that founded the first freestanding hospice in the United States. This book is the result of years of professional experiences with those that have passed on and those that were left behind.

Sheltering Thoughts is the ideal little book for someone who has recently experienced the loss of a loved one. Although a sympathy card is appreciated, this book will help them deal with their grief in a positive way. Each page is filled with inspiration, encouragement and support. The rhythmic poetry and lyricism make this book an enjoyable read in a difficult time. Famous quotes add interest and retrospect to the message.

Filled with heartfelt emotion and a depth of understanding that only one who has worked with the grief stricken could have, Sheltering Thoughts is well written and well presented in 147 pages. The book is small enough to keep in a purse or pocket enabling it to become a comforting traveling companion. A portion of the proceeds will benefit hospice work.

Finally, something for funerals!

Like most `Baby Boomers', I find myself at more funerals than weddings lately, so (following the suggestion of an earlier reviewer) I have started keeping a couple of copies of Sheltering Thoughts on hand and at the ready. I never know what to say at funerals (what can you say?), so I simply give this gift book filled with words of comfort, support and peace. The author's hospice and family therapist experiences and sensitivities are evident in her tasteful assembly of sayings, poems, and lyrics and in her own personal comments as well. When I read it myself, I found it to be a very moving read that stimulated a surprisingly peaceful contemplation of my own mortality.

One of the things I like most about this book is the feedback I get from the recipients. Different people are comforted by, and hence remember, different passages but the book seems to be appropriate for anyone regardless of their religious beliefs (or non-beliefs), and in that delicate regard this book is a safe and universal gift.

The appreciation from recipients (three so far) has been heart-felt and they said that they too will give it as a gift when the situation arises. It appears that Sheltering Thoughts fills a void not addressed by the traditional bereavement approaches. It is more distinctive, intimate and lasting than a card or flowers, and it is easy to mail when I cannot attend personally. It was written just in time for my generation.

A young adult thriller about the laws of physics, The Gravity Keeper is fun and educational! Simon Bloom, an average sixth grader, finds himself in possession of a magical book full of formulas that control the laws of the universe. Follow Simon as he bends gravity and tries to keep the book out of the hands of people who will use the laws for evil and harm. Nicholas Hormann's narration keeps the tension high with his excellent narration. Fans of Harry Potter will love this book which uses physics instead of "magic" to create a suspenseful thriller.

I've already reserved space on my bookshelf for the second installment.

Caveat: I am automatically swayed (in a good way) by any author who mentions THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY in the acknowledgments and then gives it a cameo. It's often that a new book with science fiction elements and a great deal of humor gets compared to the Douglas Adams classic. It's rare when the new book deserves the comparison. With SIMON BLOOM, THE GRAVITY KEEPER, Michael Reisman's debut novel, it's most accurate to say that the spirit of Adams's wry humor is alive and well, and the influence propels Reisman's work into its own niche rather than binds it to the category of "just another Adams rip-off."

SIMON BLOOM, THE GRAVITY KEEPER is powered by an all-seeing Narrator who reports and comments for a Chronicle of events on behalf of a mysterious organization known only as the Union. This Union, we learn, possesses a series of Books that holds the secrets to manipulating the universe. The Union itself is split into various Orders that are responsible for overseeing the workings of Physics, Biology and other functions thought to be the machinations of nature.

From his hidden position, the Narrator introduces us to 11-year-old Simon Bloom, who, along with some friends, is lured into a mystic woods by a mischievous Breeze. It's there that Simon finds (well, he's hit on the head by) a teacher's edition of one of the Order's physics books. As he experiments with the book's formulae, he finds that the information within allows him to control gravity. But, of course, with this sort of power comes responsibilities that Simon can't even begin to imagine. Worse, the physics book Simon possesses is being sought by a traitor within the Union who has nefarious plans for the book's usage.

Although bearing similarities to the recently released THE SEEMS: THE GLITCH IN SLEEP, where the complex workings of the universe are reduced to manageable mechanisms and formulae, SIMON BLOOM, THE GRAVITY KEEPER stands out with its quirky sense of humor. With chapter titles like "What Newton Said (And Simon's Dirty Ceiling)" and "Gravity Is For Suckers," it's hard to go wrong. While the characters rarely extend beyond familiar archetypes, the book's deft mixture of pacing and idiosyncratic imagination will give readers an adventure that's difficult to forget. Reisman's prime talent is in setting a tone that, even when shifting masterfully from silly to serious, never loses sight of the fun.

SIMON BLOOM, THE GRAVITY KEEPER is the first in what hopefully will be an inventive new series. I've already reserved space on my bookshelf for the second installment. And unless you stumble upon your own teacher's edition physics book, I suggest you do the same.

Simon Bloom delivers that rarest of gems: a book for kids that's A) actually funny; B) not concerned primarily with bodily functions; C) innovative and informative; and D) very well written. As a mom of kids ages 9 and 11, THANK YOU! As an avid reader (and writer) of children's lit, I wholeheartedly recommend Simon Bloom to anyone looking for a fresh read; this book tops my gift list! --Deb Mercier

Simon Bloom finds himself holding a book that tells you how to control the laws of physics. What is the first thing he does? He reverses gravity in his bedroom! Needless to say, many people want to get their hands on this very valuable book. Simon and his two friends find themselves in terrible danger. Can their knowledge of the laws of physics save them? Reisman was definitely influenced by Douglas Adams, which creates some wacky comedy. It was a great book. My biggest hope is that he writes more like this one.

I've relied on this book for years and years. I'm recommending it to a relative who needs to lose weight. But I have to wonder why Amazon prices range from nearly $50 to around $72 for either new or used! That's way out of line. I've also seen a WW soft cover cookbook that was priced over $20, when the original cost was maybe $10. These are good, but they're not rare classics!

This is the best cookbook I have ever encounter. I use it so often my pages are falling out. The receipes are easy to follow and very, very yummy. I was so saddened when this was taken out of print. I would buy this for everyone I have on my Christmas shopping list and an extra copy for me. I am glad to own one. This would make a great wedding gift, birthday gift. I think everyone should own this book. I wish weight watchers would put it back in print. I think they are doing their customers a disservice by taking it off the shelves.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!

Weight Watchers provides us with a great number of good recipes. The best thing going for Weight Watchers is their low fat recipes do not taste low fat. My husband and I have lost about 20 lbs with their program. We have never been disapointed in any of the recipes in this book. You do not have to be on the program to enjoy their recipes. For us WW folks ever wonder what you can do with 6 points? Well this book will help you!
