Plague JournalReview Date: 2008-03-19
O'Brien's bestReview Date: 2003-12-18
The middle book of a trilogy of books about the Delaney family (starting with Strangers and Sojourners and ending with Eclipse of the Sun), Plague Journal also fits within O'Brien's larger series, which he calls Children of the Last Days. The first of those is the explosive novel Father Elijah.
While Plague Journal is my personal favorite. I recommend reading it after Father Elijah and Strangers and Sojourners, since it needs the other two to provide its context in O'Brien's view of the Last Days.
And O'Brien's view is a bleak one. The government has become the tool of the antichrist, whether it knows it or not, and an honest journalist (even one who doesn't have a living faith in God) can't get an honest shake, but is hunted down.
Swift, sharp, and poigniant, O'Brien provides his readers with everything that Left Behind readers should have gotten but didn't and without all of the silly speculations. This is good literature that shapes the heart and the mind Christianly.

Don't believe everything you hearReview Date: 2005-04-08
I read PJ in a week. It is one of the most moving books I've read, but I was reluctant to heed its message in the beginning. In this world of half-truths and deceptions where everyone is a partially educated philosopher and politician, PJ really does show the need to not believe everything we heard or read.
Should we be constantly paranoid? Not really. But a healthy skepticism is necessary.

I have freely shared this with my patients which they could read and share with family members. It was most helpful for them as well as saving costly time having to be spent in the clinic.

An Unexpected TreasureReview Date: 2007-12-25
Instead, it is something much richer and more beautiful. What the book is centers around a discussion of the undergirding and overarching themes and ethos of monastic life and the hospitality that flows from it. Interwoven within these discussions are found wonderful stories that range from the humorous to the poignant taken from the lives of the authors and those they share their lives with. It is from within these elements that the application of these ideas within our lives is discussed in a way in which one ideas flows from and builds on the previous portion of the discussion.
I found my own thinking about how to practice hospitality deeply enriched by this book and I will return to it from time to time to reinforce what I have learned and to reflect on the themes woven throughout the work. I strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn the practice of hospitality from within the practice of monasticism.
Radical Hospitality: Benedict's Way of LoveReview Date: 2007-01-03
Exceptional, SubstantialReview Date: 2006-12-27
As we awaken to the need to live our beliefs about love, to live generously, graciously, welcomingly, we are confronted by our own frightened hesitancy to be present to the needs of others. This book explores how we can reach out while necessarily preserving our own boundaries. "Radical Hospitality" teaches (with wonderful examples) how and why we should become more open and generous, and concludes very credibly that the essence is "listening," perhaps the most basic Benedictine value, used here in the sense of a kind of loving contemplative social presence. Everyone wants and needs to be truly listened to, the authors say, and especially at the times when it can be hardest to want to listen, when the one being listened to is in pain, angry, afraid. To feel heard is to feel real and loved and a little bit healed.
I found "Radical Hospitality" itself to be a beautiful experience of the authors' hospitality toward the reader. Even the design of the book itself is quite inviting.

However, this book is not just about condolence. Rather, it gives us the realization of the prevalent societal truth. Also, the book is not just a mere reference, but true stories based on authors' own experiences.
Authors sketched the very contours of real life in our society, but it's a finely tuned portrait, with deep perspective and understanding, rather than a mere description.
The book is well written and unapologetic in its frankness.....most readers, whether it'd be a man or a woman, should find some relatedness to this book.

A decent book.... a little light on practical informationReview Date: 2006-01-24
1. Fight for your identity
2. Fight for personal holiness
3. Fight for your family
4. Fight through pain
5. Fight for your friends
6. Fight for a strong faith
Each of the battles made sense, although I couldn't really relate to the family fight as I'm not married. However I'm sure that many men could relate to it.
I was most impressed with the chapter on fighting through pain. Bill nails the internal struggle that Christian men go through when dealing with pain. Temptation always starts with a baby step, disguised to seem like nothing at all. However it always leads to a slippery slope.
I enjoy Bill's idea of "buddyship" or the need to have male friends. Bill lists a number of reasons why it is important to have male friends, but like the majority of the book, he doesn't give practical advice regarding how to develop relationships. I really would have liked to have seen more practical advice regarding what to do, not just what I should do.
Regardless, this book is a good easy read. I didn't find it life-changing but it was a good review of issues that need to be dealt with as a man. 4 out of 5 stars.

Could Be Invaluable If You Commit the Time and EnergyReview Date: 2004-02-20
Baker's background is in financial services which presumably require extensive education to understand the specific products and services to be offered prior to the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospective buyers of those products and services. The title of his book suggests that understanding motivation (i.e. "hot buttons') is an essential part of the salesperson's preparation and indeed it is. He takes a direct and personal approach to his reader as if he has been retained to provide to the reader a combination of mentoring and coaching services. He carefully organizes his material within 12 chapters, skillfully "Tying It All Together" in the final chapter.
This book be most valuable to those who are new to sales or now considering a career in sales; also to sales managers, especially those who supervise others who are relatively inexperienced. To the former, Baker offers sound basics with a rationale for each; to the latter, Baker offers reminders of basics. (Working as I frequently do with sales managers, I am astonished by the fact that so many of them do not have a sufficient understanding of those basics.) I also recommend this book to another group which Baker may not have had in mind when writing it: Those in executive (non sales) positions who are frequently required to persuade others to support an idea or course of action. By now I am convinced that almost everyone involved in business is constantly selling, themselves if nothing else...and most do it ineffectively. Almost all of the strategies and tactics which Baker recommends can be as beneficial to those not in sales as to those who are.
Individual salespersons as well as organizations need a business plan which is cohesive and comprehensive; also one which prudently allocates resources, especially time and energy, where they will generate the greatest ROI. Given the complexity of the general subject of salesmanship, the art and science of ethical persuasion, it makes sense to consult several different sources (including Baker's book) and then cherry-pick whatever is most appropriate to your own specific circumstances (needs, interests, weaknesses, goals, etc.). Here are some other excellent sources: Dick Canada's The 24 Sales Traps and How to Avoid Them, Linda Richardson's Stop Telling, Start Selling, Paco Underhill's Why We buy, and Gerald Zaltman's How Customers Think.

Just look at the fool card! I love that it's a girl just happily ambling off the tiled roof of a farmhouse.
I have oodles of decks that I've gathered over the years. This one is my favorite, and I've only had it for about twenty minutes. This deck will be with me wherever I go.

A beautiful deckReview Date: 2004-07-29
The Art - really stands out from other decks. The block print style makes for beautiful deep black lines and jewel-like colors. The colors are bright and vibrant but without being hard on the eyes. With some bright decks when you lay out more than three cards everything seems to swim and it's hard to make anything out. This deck has a nice balance and I haven't had trouble in this arena.
The Diversity - This is the mother of all diverse decks. Some diverse decks have an African suit and a Japanese suit etc, or feature the occasional ethnic person. Here you have every flavor of person sprinkled evenly throughout the deck. Also, where some decks make the same outline for every person and just use different crayons to color them in this one really this one makes everyone look like members of their race. Also there are a number of cards that feature folks of different races playing, very rare.
The Courts: Courts are Seer, Seeker, Sibyl, Sage, follows the system where the court levels are different ways of experiencing the suit's element. The whole deck is element heavy and will work well for people who relate to the cards in this way. Will be nigh impossible for those who have a wands/air, swords/fire outlook.

Meditations for Enhancing Your Immune System
After having read Bernie Siegel, I wanted to hear him and I did. I was very pleased with his meditations. But I wanted to explore further.
I found Dr Goodman to be the answer. She is factual and a real person. She describes how she used to teach self-healing to others and then got cancer. She thought this was a joke. From within, she panicked. She then tried her own method and got rid of the cancer, only it returned. In fact, it returned three times. It is only then that she did some deep work to uncover the reasons why this cancer was re-occurring. Doctors told her that if she was not following the normal medical way she would die.
And here came her answer to her quest. She found that she had a core destructive belief that she got as a little child listening to her father's prayer "Thank God I am not a woman"
Thanks to this, she transformed her toxic attitudes to positive ones.
Her book is not only the story of how she was healed of cancer, but also the full detail of a refined method to heal cancer and other diseases. She is fully humane, never condescending or patronizing. She knows because she has gone through the fears, and she came out victorious. With warmth and enthusiasm she goes into full details of her method. You can apply it straight away.
Healing is a decision. It is a choice. If, like me, you are affected with a disease that troubles your life, this warm book is a boon. It does work. I have started to do the deep work of exploration. It is fascinating how the body responds to positive affirmations. This is not a glib answer to patch a plaster on a wooden leg. This work is intense, emotional, sometimes painful. But the hope that blooms in you with results that bud into reality, that is very convincing.
This book is also for people who have a chronic disease and the doctor keeps you "ticking" without much improvement. This book will relieve you.

I wish Amazon sold Shivani Goodman's audio recordings to go along with this book, but this volume is a must-have for those interested in self-healing. You won't be disappointed.
