Shaq has a fantastic imagination and it really shows in his new children's book, "Shaq and the Beanstalk"! I felt that Shaq helped to right alot of the wrongs in our old classic fairy tales. For example,he emphasizes that violence is wrong and he reinforces that many times in his book. Shane W. Evans did an awesome job illustrating this book and his colorful and imaginative drawings really make this book a big success.

Great interviews

Review Date: 2006-09-01
Living Blues magazine has always been the leading periodical in the field in the US; one reason for this is the superb interviews with bluesmen/women that have graced its pages since its founding in the 1970s. Allowing artists to tell their stories fully and freely, often prodded on by knowledgeable and probing question by the interviewers Jim O'Neal and Amy Van Singel, produced important first-hand documentation of the art form. This book compiles a dozen of those interviews, ranging from Georgia Tom Dorsey to Muddy Waters, Eddie Boyd to Little Esther. One of the most fascinating is the very long (the longest in the magazine's history) interview with Delta blues legend Houston Stackhouse who was able to relate first-hand information and reminiscences of just about all the great bluesmen who worked in Mississippi and Arkansas going all the way back to Tommy Johnson. But all of the interviews plumb deeply into each artist's background, career, opinions, and memories, and that's what makes them (and the book) so interesting and indispensable. Hopefully additional volumes of more Living Blues interviews will be issued.

Not just the Voice of the blues

Living Blues Magazine has long been the champion of the common man with uncommon talents. These interviews from this fine magazine are drawn from a wide range of blues masters, now all but gone. In their own words, they reveal not only the sense of purpose that marked their lives, but something about their music, something of the hardships of growing up and old in a racist society.

The reader cannot easily distance himself from this fact. This alone can make it a tough, but fascinating read. The violent life in the ghetto is not new and it took many a bluesman's life early. The cry for justice is at the core of the blues, as these voices recount. Their words paint a picture of hope and angst in colors as vivid as the best Van Gogh.

This is really a great book, if you want to hear about the blues from the men who created it first hand. The blues is often either treated as an academic subject with big sincerity or as a subject of legends. This way the it is undramathized and becomes much more alive, but without losing the fascination. For example read about Houston Stackhouse drinking canned heat together with Tommy Johnson in the delta or how Muddy Waters felt when he heard his first single being played from every house as he was walking down the street just a few days after its release. The book is packed with stories like this as well as the opinions and thoughts of these great artists.

Voice Of The Blues gathers many lengthy interviews with pioneering bluesmen under one cover, revealing their life and times and an unusual participation in a dialogue over the history and directions of the blues music genre. These interviews first appeared in the pages of Living Blues magazine and here have been reprinted for the first time in book form.

A Training Manual for Authentic Positive Living

Review Date: 2007-03-05
Are you haunted by a nagging feeling of "There has to be more to life than THIS!"--more than what the world insists is what ought to make you happy? Maybe you've unconsciously settled for somebody else's definition of "happy." One of this book's many strengths is that it shows you how to practice noticing what makes YOU happy. Because we all grow up being taught how to see what's wrong (with ourselves and with life in general), we can end up focusing on it so much that we forget that life is really about experiencing what's right. We may even lose track of what "happy" feels like for us.
O'Neal's book can help you train yourself to see the "good stuff" that's already in your experience. Learning to see it and to focus on it is the key to experiencing and consciously creating more of it. Plus, the book's attractively designed, well-written, easy to follow and full of practical techniques. It's an empowering work that shows you how to engage your own ongoing thoughts to create a more joyful and meaningful life. There's a lot in this slim volume, including exercises that you can use to create and reinforce "joyful habits" for years to come. Recommended both for individual and study groups.

In "Becoming What You Want To See In The World: The Art Of Joyful Living", author, speaker, and consultant Mary Claire O'Neal does something that no other self-help manual writer has done quite in the same way before - she examines the `physics' of happiness and just how we can ignite and revive our passion an joy in life. Enhanced with personal stories, practical tools, and motivating activities, O'Neal draws upon her years of professional experience and expertise as a seasoned professional to instruct her readers in how they can live more fulfilling, balanced, and meaningful lives. "Becoming What You Want To See In The World" is a thoroughly `reader friendly' compilation of clear, concise principles and action plans that are founded upon effective and compassionate communication. If you only have time and energy for one self-help, self-improvement book at present, you would be well advised to make it Mary O'Neal's "Becoming What You Want To See In The World".

This Book Rings True

The accessability, brevity and practicality of this book makes it valuable reading for anyone wanting to create a more balanced, happy life. I say this because I found the ideas and principles presented by Mary Claire O'Neal to ring true with my intuition and life observations, and I believe her insights to be universal to human experience. I've found the seven exercises and practices that she suggests (which she terms "tools") to be useful and helpful in getting my bearings in life.

This is not a dry reading of formulas to achieve happiness; O'Neal writes with an informal, personal voice and seasons the book with her own stories. It is also well written. I've had the pleasure of attending her workshop on communication, and can vouch for her brilliance as a teacher. Her book now extends to a wider audience the fruits of her efforts to achieve happiness and understand its underpinnings.

Bill O'Neal's The Johnson County War is a true, historical count of a violent and bloody conflict in Wyoming's northern rangeland. One side were cattle barons and powerful politicians; on the other, homesteaders and rustlers. The range war was rife with lynchings, ambushes, invasions by hired Texas gunmen, and ended in fierce last stand and siege drawing in hundreds of combatants. Black-and-white photographs pepper this meticulously researched and presented dissection of the conflict, highly recommended for American history shelves and as captivating reading for anyone who truly wants to learn about the strife that wracked the Old West.

The writer spend time developing the characters and researching their history. The book goes into the "why" and "how" of the Johnson County War. It is highly entertaining for the U.S. History fans like myself. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Philistines: Giving Goliath His Due (Marco Polo Monographs)

An excellent resource
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-13
I read a lot of books, but sometimes one comes along that really surprises me with its excellence, and this is one of those books. In this book, Professor Neil Bierling presents up-to-date information on those bad guys of the Old Testament, the Philistines. Combining the Biblical references to the Philistines with recent archeological finds, Prof. Bierling fleshes out the Philistines, following their history from their origination in the Aegean(!), through their arrival in Egypt and Canaan, their interaction with the Israelites, and on to their final destruction by the Babylonian Empire.

This is an excellent resource for any student of the Bible who has wondered who the Philistines really were. The author uses the Biblical references to them in a skillful way, showing where the archaeological finds have complemented the Biblical narrative, and where they have not. Indeed, he does not simply follow the Bible (though the Bible does give the book its organization), but follows the history of the Philistines as they interacted with such Middle Eastern nations as Egypt and Assyria.

So, let me just sum up by saying that this is a great book on the Philistines, one that is sure to amplify your understanding of who they were.

Best study of the PHILISTINES available!

Mr. Neal W. O'Connor's series "Aviation Awards of Imperial Germany in World War I and the Men Who Earned Them" (6 volumes published so far) is without a doubt the best that has been written on this subject in many, many, years.

The books are extraordinarily well written and contain hundreds of photographs, many of them published for the first time. From his extensive research in Germany and from the files of prominent collectors, the author presents an unparalleled wealth of information, most of which was previously unavailable to the general public.

If, for any reason, I were allowed to keep only few books in my life, I would definitely choose to keep Mr. O'Connor's series. If you are serious about WWI German Aviation, then get these books as soon as you can

An excellent reference and history

Volume 2 of O'Connor's multi-volume work on Aviation Awards of Imperial Germany, deals with awards of the Kingdom of Prussia. As the premier state within the German Empire, Prussia made many of its orders and medals available throughout "Germany." The most famous awards, such as the Iron Cross and the Pour le Merite (Blue Max) are such high-profile awards, that Vol 2's histories of these awards, and biographies of many of the recipients, makes this book an excellent general history and reference for anyone's WWI book collection. O'Connor has included photographs of the various awards, and where possible photos of many of the recipients. In the case of the Blue Max recipients, their brief biographies often contain details of the deeds that 'won' them the coveted award. The book's appendices contain much statistical data as well.

A novel of crime, justice and conscience, David O'Neal's "Choosing to Kill" is a thought-provoking third addition to this series of four. The two previous books, "What Goes Around" and "The Pact With Bruno" show how an innocent man can be caught up in the turmoil of crime and the brutal decisions that often accompany this lifestyle. Protagonist Doug Carlson, a Vietnam vet, has to fall back on instincts to cope with the brutality that he has witnessed in the past, and feels morally obligated to in the present. Is murder acceptable if the victims are criminals? Or, if they are above the law? What if they . . . are the law? You'll just have to find out yourself, in this third addition to the series.

This is a book that you simply must read. And yes, I will tell you why. In some cases, psychiatric drugs are necessary. And they will be a part of your treatment. I lost it when I gave complete control to my psychiatrists. I'll give you a short example. I said to one psychiatrist, "Could the Valium AND the Prozac cause ill effects?" Answer, "I don't know why it should." Later, I would find out that this answer would not be good enough! If you buy this book while you are taking psychiatric drugs, you will be taking responsibility for your own health care! Should you be taking this medication before bedtime? During meals? Before meals? With aspirin? This book tells all so that you will not become addicted to Valium like I did. Please read it for your best care. Thank you.
