I am interested in the topic of the difference that culture makes in our perceptions and ways of thinking. I hesitated buying this book, however, because I thought, frankly, it would be too scholarly. But I bought it anyway and I'm glad I did. It turned out to be an intersting read -- profound but not too academic. The book is in the interview format and the psychologists kept me fascinated with their original insights and theories.

Samuel Cunard almost created an industry all by himself. His name even became the basis for the word cunarder, meaning any ship owned and operated by the Cunard company. Some of the most famous ships in the world were cunarders, the 'Queen Mary,' 'Queen Elizabeth,' and their replacements 'QE 2,' and 'QM 2.'

Samuel Cunard was born in Nova Scotia from parents who had left Americe because of the revolution. In 1840 he began the first steamship sailings between the New World and England. His ships were not usually the fastest, the most elegant, or the the biggest, but they were noted as being the safe way to travel.

This book is a description of what Cunard did to form his empire, and is a most interesting story of business in that time. The Cunard line lasted until 2008 when the company's assets and liabilities were transferred to the Carnival Corporation, the cruise line operator.

I found this to be an eXcellent book covering all the aspects of sawmilling in Nova Scotia During the late 19th and 20th centuries. It was very informative with plenty of photographs and illustrations. A great book indeed for anyone interested in sawmilling, young and old alike

This book is a must for any high technology small businesses. The book diagrams all of the necessy ingredients to prepare a proposal for the government multi-million dollar SBIR program. I have used the book to sucessfully win 5 Phase I and 3 phase 2 contracts for over $2.5 million in contracts . The contracts were from the Air Force, Department of transportation and the Wright Laboratories.

The tool for guiding the reader through early life in Nova Scotia. Vivid descriptions of characters, climate, topography, and tribulations. If you are researching the voyage of the "Ship Hector", you must obtain this book. Genealogists dream, if working in 1700-1900's Nova Scotia. Well written, easily read, complete. The research displayed and the history revealed priceless. Bibliography provides additional tools, not easily located.

Being a fan of sea kayaking off the coast of Maine, and having vacationed in Nova Scotia last summer and loving it, this book was a natural. There are 42 routes described, broken up into 5 sections of the province. I was particularly interested in the South Shore, from Halifax down to Yarmouth, not one of the most glamerous portions of Nova Scotia. The guides spell out the distance, put in and take out points, weather and sea conditions which you need to be cautious of, and some of the high spots of each route. As the Island is subject to some very extreem weather and sea conditions, it is strong on cautions. It also provides map and book references. It gave me everything that I would need to be able to plan a trip there. Now, to find the time.

Matrix theory is a very large field, but the first steps are very basic and can be taught to people with limited experience in mathematics. However, those fundamental principles must be known very well if you are to succeed in the upper levels of matrix theory. In this book, the authors have done an excellent job in demonstrating the basics of matrices. The topics covered are how matrices are constructed, the fundamental operations that are performed on them and how to use matrices to solve some basic problems.
There is very little of what could be described as "abstract mathematics" in the book. Practice exercises appear at the ends of the sections and solutions to some of them are included in an appendix. This book is an excellent primer on linear algebra and can be understood by anyone with a basic knowledge of algebra.

This book provides an excellent, (annotated) first-person narrative by an early polar explorer. The annotation provides just enough supplementary material to provide context and clarification for the modern reader, without interrupting Charles Wright's voice. The illustrations are really marvelous.

Having read the book about five years ago, I don't remember a great deal of detail, but one moment stands out: Wright describes, off-handedly, waking up in a sleeping bag soaked by a puddle of ice that melted as he slept on it. Anyone who has spent the night in a drenched, cold sleeping bag knows how hard a person you have to be to take such a thing as a matter of course.
