An excellent book for anyone interested in the history or genealogy of their families and other ethnic groups of Nova Scotia. Although not a large book,being only 160 pages,it is filled with a great deal of information. Not only does it give the background of the large number of ethnic groups that have come to Nova Scotia,it covers all peoples from the native Micmacs,now called Mi'kmaq,up to and including the present immigrants. It also gives details about the reasons these people left their countries and chose to come to Nova Scotia to find a new life.
This book would be a terrific resource for anyone with family roots in Nova Scotia who are looking for somewhere to start researching them.It also deals with surnames and the changes that have taken place in them.There are also 33 pages of source material ;

Appendix A
A list of Cultural Associations in N.S.
Appendix B
A list of Historical Associations and Societies without Museums.
Appendix C
A list of Historical Associations and Socities with Museums.

All with addresses and phone numbers.

And;
An extensive Bibliography for further information.

Well presented material. I found in using other travel "Dummies" books that the information makes a difference in the enjoyment of the trip. This one was not an exception. Other travel books lack much of the wisdom and anecdotes contained in "Dummies" volumes.

My son loves this book for bedtime or anytime. He's into robots, outer space, & building things. That means this book covers it all. The colors are so vivid that my son enjoys looking at the pictures and asking questions about Nova's friends.

David Kirk is the creator of "Miss Spider's Sunny Patch", a favorite in our home. It seemed only right to invite Nova into our reading library.

FOUCAULT'S CONTRIBUTIONS: ORIGINS AND CONSEQUENCES

This is a fresh and balanced appraisal of Foucault's social and political thought. It reviews the previous literature on the subject and argues for an interpretation centered on the debates between modernity and postmodernity, as an unfinished open-ended process. Oliveira focuses on the genealogy of these debates, starting from the crises of the modern world detected by both Kant and Hegel, and from the critique of western rationality presented by Nietzche. The book argues that Foucault elaborated, and adopted as central guideline, this approach to genealogy inherited from Nietzche. Each influence received by Foucault is seen in the light of genealogy. The consequences of this approach are also seen in current debates on contemporary society influenced by Foucault. Poststructuralists,liberals and comunitarrians can be considered inheritors of a western legacy of continuous debates on the limits, the importance, and the power, of modern rationality.

One of Tolstoy's Greatest Works.....
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-10
Path of Life was Tolstoy's last work, written in the last year of his life. It is a compendium of thoughts by great thinkers throughout time, from all religions, as Tolstoy did not believe in a dogmatic religion but in one which all people could share. Tolstoy's similar work, A Calendar of Wisdom: Daily Thoughts to Nourish the Soul, Written and Selected from the World's Sacred Texts, is more easily accessible in its day by day format but is not nearly as extensive as Path of Life in elucidating exactly what Tolstoy though the meaning of life to be.

What is most amazing about this book is the fact that this is the first translation of one of Tolstoy's most important works. There are few books which hold a permanent place on my bookshelf: Path of Life is one of them.

This book is the culmination of 36 years of research by the author, whose wife was a direct descendant of Patrick Cottar. Researching the origin of a family in eighteenth-century Nova Scotia is very difficult unless the family happens to descend from the Acadians, Foreign Protestants, Planers, or Loyalists. It appears that the Cottars were not members of any of the foregoing emigrant groups.

Surnames included in this book: Adamson, Archibald, Arsenault, Atkinson, Baillie, Baldwin, Barnhill, Bird, Blaike, Blair, Bos, Briard, Bridgett, Burrows, Burten, Butler, Caldwell, Cameron, Chapman, Chisholm, Christensen, Churchill, Clark, Clow, Cole, Cook. 96 pages, hard cover. 2001.

Six degrees of separation.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-25
The characters that were introduced in the first volume and continued their journeys in the second volume begin to meet each other. Either knowingly or not, their destinies are all intertwined. As they say, you are only six degrees of separation from anyone in the world. The six degrees is the maximum, and our characters are all going to be much closer than the six by the time we are done.

Ed and Norman both learn hard, but valuable lessons. Tom has brought them so close to the listener that it actually hurts to hear them learning the hard lessons. The others are learning new things as well, but not in so tough a manner as Ed and Norman. We still have a ways to go, and need to learn more about the chracters and how they are all related.
