Intertextualities between music theatre and literature
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-05
This book deals with the reception of works by Offenbach in Lisbon in the 19th century such as it is reflected in the literary works by the Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós (or Queiroz)(1845-1901). The strategies of communication in both authors (the composer and the novelist) are compared, and it is shown, how Queiroz' approach is different from Zola's Realism or Naturalism and similar to Offenbach's theatre. Sarcasm, irony, mediated by the narrator, generate in Queiroz (like in Offenbach) a caricature of real life. Hidden or explicit quotations (intertextuality)by Queiroz of Offenbach's operettes make still clearer this relationship between music theatre and literature. On the contrary, Zola was a severe critic of Offenbach.

Buy all 5! You won't be sorry!

Do not buy this audio recording unless you get parts 1-4 and listen to them first. We love Tom Bodett, so much so that when we were in Alaska, we went to "the end of the road" aka Homer, just to see the place he writes about. I got the "Freefall of Webster Cummings"(the first tape) at the library along with 2 other volumns, not knowing that it was one huge story. We only had parts 1,2 and 5- my husband refused to let us listen to 5 until we got parts 3 and 4. The library did not have them all, so I went to the bookstore (the days before Amazon) and bought the entire set for him as a gift. The American Odyssey is wonderful, truly a classic. You have to listen to it on cassette as no one can spin a yarn like Tom, but beware, if you get the fifth volumn without listening to 1-4, you will have cheated yourself beyond measure. We buy lots of audio books, and once we listen to them, we give them away, but not this one! We bought it when it came out, listened to it on a trip - loaned it out, with my husband threatening to kill anyone who did not return it. We got it back, and on a trip out west this summer, we listened to all 5 volumns again. It was just as wonderful the second time around. Each volumn is good, but the story as a whole, told in all 5 is exceptional. Tom has outdone himself. You keep wondering how he is going to weave all of these story lines together, but he does it. If you can't afford the entire set, go to the library and get them (I know Amazon won't like that) Don't miss this book. It is quintissential Bodett. Not only a soul searching American Odyssey, but truly an American classic that will have you laughing and crying. This book truly touched our hearts!

I find this book full of efficient algorithms for underlying cryptographic primitives and large precision arithmetic for the purpose of speeding up cryptographic protocols. The book is not suitable for a new pie in the field of crptography. It is dedicated for advanced researchers, excperts and professionals in the field of cryptology.

A modestly Swift proposal

Review Date: 2004-06-11
By adopting his alter ego of Xavier De C*** for objectivity's sake, veteran journalist Regis Debray becomes a kid in a candy-store in skewering the shortcomings of modern European culture and statesmanship, particularly in his native France. His late fictional friend and colleague has written to Debray in English (so Debray tells us) to diagnose all that is wrong with modern Europe - way too much to detail here - and to prescribe a most unusual cure.

His prescription for massive cultural reform takes the form of calling for a modern-day Edict of Caracalla, citing how the Roman Emperor of that name declared all residents of the Roman Empire not otherwise enslaved or proscribed to be Roman citizens, and thereby expanding the tax base and buying the empire couple of extra centuries. De C***, having recently becoming a U.S. citizen after years in the French secret service, says that the modern Roman emperor lives in the White House. He prescribes that the countries of Europe join in a "United States of the West," as he would deem it, and that France be the first to take this step toward Washington, lest Britain or Germany steal yet another diplomatic march.

Not that it should be a one-way affair. M. De C***, or M. Debray, calls for a more Atlantocentric outlook on Washington's part. But he declares that Europe should provide the incentive by, as it were, going West - a notion guaranteed to cause conniptions in news columns and government chambers all over Europe.

A giveaway, though, to this American reader at any rate, is what the erstwhile new citizen De C***/old European Debray leaves out; namely, the actual legal means of executing this Europe Annexation. No where does he mention that any new Edict of Caracalla would take the form of a European government ratifying the U.S. Constitution. It reflects the European Constitution debate where the few comparisons to the U.S. debate in 1788 were denied and dismissed with a casual wave of the hand - a case of waving the light out of the smoke if ever there was one; the very disease of De C***/Debray's jeremiad.

For the irony-challenged - not all of whom are Yanks - bear in mind that Debray doesn't dream of an actual Europe Annexation into a Greater U.S. He himself has cited this book as a call against the rise of renewed empire for the 21st-century. Still, it's difficult to imagine a more plausible step away from that vision - unless it's for a United States of Earth. We can always leave the United States of the Solar System for the 22nd century.

Awesome Book Which Exposes Those in Big Business that Funded, Created, and Crafted Environmentalism and Why
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-24
This is a fantastic book; it easily receives 5 stars for the superb content and analysis. Dr. Gibson is simply a guy with terrific work who does not receive the attention he should. I highly recommend reading Gibson's "Battling Wall Street: The Kennedy Presidency" first that way you can become familiar with Gibson's work.

This book goes into great detail about the money that created the environmental movement and why. Environmentalists may not like this book; if you are an environmentalist, read with an open mind. Dr. Gibson shows how big oil and other so called opponents of environmentalism actually created and fund the movement in the past and today. Gibson demonstrates the stranglehold these individuals and companies still control and manipulate the movement. Gibson does not all mention anything about pollution as good or bad. He makes very brief mention (less than a page) of global warming and how the scientific community is in disagreement on the issue.

Gibson demonstrates that the individuals and companies who fund the movement have specific economic and ideological goals. One of the core messages behind the environmental movement is to stop the progress of technology. Technology is the largest economic force of redistribution of power and wealth in society. Many economist and social scientist acknowledge this reality. This is one of the many factors Gibson demonstrates as to explain why big business pushes the environmental movement.

The book emphasizes the Rockefeller and Ford connections to the environmental movement, as well as the many extreme environmentalists who believe that the world's population should be reduced by 80% and call for a return back to oppressive and intense labor. The book offers a terrific explanation as to why the environmental movement is against religions such as Christianity.

Gibson investigates the origins of Earth Day and how it was originally perceived as a corporate buyout and propaganda model. If you are environmentalist and consider yourself to dislike oil companies, ford corporation, and other seemingly destructive companies to the environment; then prepared to have your mind blown as you find out these are the very companies that control, created, fund, and shape the entire environmental movement. If you end up reading this book and like it or want to know more about the power groups involved in the book I recommend you to read both "Battling Wall Street" and "Communication Power and Media" by Donald Gibson.

Overall this is a truly fantastic book, the information presented is hard to come by, well researched, and very honest.

multiparty vs.one-party democracy
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-07
A brilliant comparative study of tribal politics in Kenya and Nigeria, and the rest of Africa. Also a probing analysis of the tragic failure of the multiparty system in Africa's ethnically divided countries.

It is also an equally impressive critique of the one-party system, although not as detailed, probably because the author's focus is on the divisive nature of multiparty politics in Africa's multiethnic societies.

Highly recommended for scholars and members of the general public interested in comparative study and African affairs.
