I am a very detail-oriented person, and this book answered all of my questions and some I wouldn't have known to have! I feel well-prepared for my new pom and am confident I can make informed decisions about the health, safety, and happiness of my pup. The pictures are wonderful too - I'm sure this book would already be dog-eared (no pun intended) if it wasn't a hardcover!

This book seems to hit on every aspect of raising a puppy. The information is presented in interesting ways and the pictures are cute. I learned a lot and will continue to use it as a reference as we train and care for our puppy. I thought it was a very good buy and would recommend it. I spent a while at Borders looking through puppy books and just bought this one on a whim, but am very happy with it.

Teoti Anderson, with help from veterinary consulting editor Wayne Hunthausen D.V.M., has written a delightful book that will introduce you to the wonderful and exciting world of puppies.

Beautifully illustrated and informative, Puppy Care & Training has a free care and training DVD, sections on how to train your canine using positive training methods, up-to-date health care information, convenient diet options, as well as easy-to-follow grooming instructions.

Owning a dog is a source of great joy; but it also carries with it a sense of responsibility. This book will help you keep your four legged family member healthy and safe for years to come.

This book is great for anybody, in any state, who wants to set up an S-Corporation. The materials on the included CD are worth the price of the book alone. As for the copy I received, it was exactly as advertised, packed perfectly, and came just a few short days after I placed the order. What more could I ask for? Definitely worth a 5-star rating!

Sailing Away from Winter

After reading the first page of Sailing Away From Winter I immediately realized that I had forgotten what a good writer Silver Donald Cameron is. Unlike many sailing adventure books, Cameron shies away from writing a glorified log book but rather makes the reader feel that he is in the cockpit of "Magnus" and experiences the joys of sailing in a fair wind on a sunny day to the unending frustration of a finicky and somewhat unreliable diesel engine that is maintained by a bilge dwelling scurvy crew of evil Norwegian trolls.

While slipping southwards from his homeport of D'Escousse, Silver Donald makes port in such historic Nova Scotia locales as Canso, Halifax, Lunenburg and Yarmouth and then onward to crossing the Bay of Fundy and entering our "beloved" neighbour, the United States of America. Here we learn that like most Canadians, not many Americans on the New England Coast are fans of President George W. Bush as evidenced by many bumper stickers "Needed: One florist to send two Bushes to Iraq"

One common thread in Cameron's many works is his love affair with Cape Breton. During the entire southward voyage Magnus pursues long time friend and fellow Cape Bretoner's Jim and Carol-Anne Organ, of Port Hawkesbury, aboard Seaduction. In the Abaco's the crews of the two Cape Breton vessels rendezvous and share many colourful yarns after cruising more than 3000 miles away from their beloved island. If there's one thing about Cape Bretoner's as the song goes "One thing I know wherever I go there's always friends from back home".

From a sailor's perspective I found that Sailing Away From Winter can be used as a reference book for those of us planning to navigate the Intracoastal Waterway while keeping company with the family pet, a travel guide of good marinas along the ICW, and maybe most importantly a guide for diesel engine repair. As any seasoned cruiser knows: The sailing is the easy part of the cruise, it's knowing how to fix things that really count. Well done Captain.

"Sailing Away From Winter: A Cruise From Nova Scotia to Florida and Beyond" is the true-life memoir of Canadian columnist Silver Donald Cameron, who dared to make his dreams of a sea voyage come true. With his wife and their beloved dog, he traveled more than three thousand nautical miles in 236 days, visiting towns dotting the coast from Nova Scotia to Florida, crossing the Gulf Stream, experiencing the Bahamas, and much more. A vividly detailed recounting of the joys and perils of navigating the ocean in an aged Norwegian-built ketch, the camaraderie shared with other cruisers, and much more. Highly recommended.

My book club gave it seven thumbs up and no thumbs down. The protagonist kept me riveted from the beginning of the story when he dealt with his father's dead body.
I'll read it again and no doubt find some more new insights and more little things that are so very clever. Thanks Linda, I'll be reading your other title(s) as well.

I initially picked up this book because it was set in Nova Scotia, the province of my roots. What a surprise I had in how much I enjoyed the read, actually several times over.I felt the author did an exceptional job in portraying the angst felt by the main character. At times I felt there was some stereotyping of Maritimers but it did not take away from the story. The author's character development was realistic, as was her handling of sensitive subject matters. The sensitivity of the subject matter added to the interest and the intrigue of the story.I don't think you will be disappointed if you give this book a try. I read alot and it is now one of my all time favourites.

Originally purchased book for research on the natives, flora and fauna and mysteries of the Amazon rainforest. Enjoyed Plotkin's tale of his travel(s) into the jungle and the natives with whom he interacted and from whom he gathered information about the medicinal properties of rainforest plants.

A fascinating and pertinent MUST-read for all adults

"Everything you wanted to know about entering the Brazilian Rainforest, and more" could be the subtitle of this unusual but riveting nonfiction work Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice by an ethnobotanist, Mark Plotkin.

Remember those naming games you played on summer nights? "If you were on a desert island, but could have one book with you, what would it be?" When I go up the Amazon, I'll be carrying this little tome under my arm.

Before then, I will enjoy the adventure story and recommend it to others; use the bibliography for further research on the history of the rainforest; make lists of the flora, especially medicinal remedies, mentioned; trace along a map the various routes Plotkin took on his travels through Brazil, Surinam, and along the borders of Colombia and Venezuela. I could teach a year-long course based on the information in this book. What an English course that would be with all the links to ecology, botany, language studies, sociology, anthropology, survival training, medicine--the list goes on.

Am I enthusiastic about Plotkin's work? It is the best book I have read in years even though, teaching literature, I read many fine books. It has affected me the way some people are converted by religion. If you have ever held a thoughtful concern for the rainforest or indigenous peoples or our earth or oxygen, it will affect you, too.

Using a scholarly approach to his highly readable story makes this accessible to professional botanists or historians as well as to us lay people. The photographs each speak their thousand words and are worth the price of the book in themselves. What Rachel Carson did for the dangers of environmental pollution, Mark Plotkin does for the destruction of the fragile rainforest.

Another game you played on summer nights--asking impossible questions like "If a tree fell in a forest, but no one were there to hear it, would it create a sound?" Plotkins makes indelibly clear the effect the fallen trees of the rainfore! sts have on us all.

Recently, I took the time to listen to this audio course on Tarot. It is the only one of its kind that I know of and thus a pioneer in the field. Overall, it's quite nice, offering descriptions and symbology for each of the 78 cards in the Tarot, explained in a way to get the reader quickly started on the path to Tarot. By "in an evening," the authors mean that on your first listen, your brain will be geared to the understanding of Tarot that some students take years to attain. I agree with this because the CD forces you to go through each card, where many books make it easy to skip around. I recommend several listens to get your brain acquainted with the subject. For those who understand Witchcraft as a Science, listen to this recording while in your alpha state and you'll grasp it even faster. From there, move on to some of the other fine Tarot books in this bookshoppe to explore the symbols even deeper. This CD can also be played during sleep, when your brain is naturally in alpha or theta level, which will allow you to absorb it even more deeply. The author does not used reversed meanings, which is also the method that we prefer, and delves deeply into the symbols and emotions identified with each card. In future versions, we'd like to see a subtle music accompanying in the background, and also see each suit and the Major Arcana broken up into individual tracks instead of the two tracks current on the recording. Aside from these two minor drawbacks, this CD is definitely worth a look, and will help you reinforce the wisdom of the Tarot through your auditory senses!

I feel that this book was able to teach me about Tarot in an evening. Most books take much longer then that. The analogies are user friendly and modern. Since learning is best done through repetition it does help to listen to the CD more than once. The author has a user friendly fresh approach to teaching the Tarot. I would highly recommend this item to those who have little or no knowledge about the Tarot.

A Book of Historical Proportions

This is a monumental book! It is the first-ever published book to put forward a workable Gibbs free energy theory of evolution. By comparison, Erwin Schrodinger, in his famous little 1944 book "What is Life", tells us that had he been writing for physicists, he would have made use of the concept of free energy [G] but judged it too difficult for the general audience. Not so with Gladyshev. While most other evolution-related books fumble around, haphazardly, with the quantity `entropy' [S], i.e. the dissipation of useful energy, as though it were the key to all existence, Gladyshev digs into the heart of the matter which is unquestionably the Gibbs free energy function [G = H - TS], i.e. the measure of a system's energy allotment available to do work. As many know, in any biological system, work can be defined as any activity energetically equivalent to lifting a weight through a distance of gravitational height. In this direction, from page 38 we are told: "The value of the change in the Gibbs free energy corresponding to the formation of some human society (a thermodynamic system) can be estimated by calculating the work that is to be produced in order to build the structure of that society." These are revolutionary statements. This is thermodynamics on the human scale. Excellent book!!!

New approach to understanding phenomena of life

Life in the Universe originated and is evolving in accordance with the general laws of nature, specifically, the law of temporal hierarchies and the second law of thermodynamics. Now the are new results which confirm this statement. New articles: "On Thermodynamics, Entropy and Evolution of Biological Systems: What is Life from a Physical Chemist's Viewpoint", Journal "ENTROPY", 1, 1999 - http://www.endeav.org/evolut/entropy/ and "Thermodynamics Theory of Biological Evolution and Aging. Experimental Conformation for Theory" - http://www.endeav.org/evolut/text/ttbea . One can see that theory has the reliable conformation. Full information is at the site http://www.endeav.org/evolut . I like the contents of my book. Unfortunately the quality of publishing is bad.
