As far I can say, this is one of the most charming and beautiful houses in the world. Is not that this is house is grant, or magnificent; Charleston is so special, because it's got character and lots of personality. I love this book.

i stumbled across this book on a beautiful indian summer sunday afternoon....it is a treasure for those unable to physically saunter through the rooms and out to the walled garden that is charleston. all photos in colour, all rooms as they were when vanessa bell, duncan grant, family and friends lived and worked there. inspirational.

I agree with the previous reader, this is it ... the definitive book on Charleston Farmhouse. Although I think this book is more than a glimpse of the house and garden for those unable to visit, it is a surperb reference for those of us that have visited and wish to recall the house, etc. The photography is stunning, the text is informative. A worthwhile addition to any Bloomsbury book collection.

John Daker is Erekose is The Eternal Champion, again. After all the heroics and adventuring through countless lifetimes and incarnations he is weary, and just wants to get back to his Eldren princess Ermizhad and lead the quiet life.

Something nags at him, in his mind, a name, another Eternal Champion, but he doesn't know that name. A mystery that will not let him rest and retire fromt he cycle of the Eternal Champion.

This book does not dissappoint.

If you are looking for a great fantasy story with an abundance of action, The Dragon in the Sword surely will not disappoint you. If you like stories of soldiers desperately searching for their lost loves, this book is for you also. If you are a Michael Moorcock fan and enjoy his Elric saga, then this book is sure to deliver.
After being introduced to the very first in the series of these Elric books, I instantly became a fan not only of the epic Elric saga, but also of the author himself. His style of writing includes sentences that are thoroughly descriptive so no detail is left out. I have enjoyed Mr. Moorcock's books ever since that first one and this book is no exception.
The story is loaded with action from the very beginning as The Eternal Champions, as he is now called, recalls his past adventures with splendid detail. He recalls all of his past forms, their relationships, and their adventures. He is still Elric, but at the same time he isn't. He keeps reincarnating and taking on different identities. Some of the names he has been called along with Elric are Erekose, Urlik, and his present name, John Daker. He wishes to be Erekose again because that is who he was when he found his true love, Ermizhad, but lost her and searches for her endlessly while he also fights against chaos.
The action continues as John Daker tells of his travels on a dark ship whose captain is blind. This ship doesn't sail as normal ships sail, rather it sails between realms of the universe. While on this ship, Daker's dreams of women who chant pleas to release a dragon begin. He also dreams of a soldier in black and yellow who tells him what lies ahead, but speaks in mysteries and riddles that the Eternal Champion must figure out. He doesn't realize that his next incarnation will lead him to these very same women who plead with him in his dreams.
These women are of the Eldren race and are known as the "ghost women" because of their white armor. John comes to meet these women at what is called "The Massing" when all of the different races from a certain realm of the universe come together. They are said to be cannibalistic women who buy their partners to reproduce and then eat them. He first meets them at a marketplace where they are buying one of these "mates."
Before the massing though, Daker finds out his new identity, although he does not know what he is to be called. He winds up on a beach and finds Count Ulrich von Bek. Von Bek was in a concentration camp for speaking out against the Nazis and escaped with help from some friends. He then planned to kill Hitler but failed and escaped to this new realm called the Maaschanheem.
The action again picks up as these two run into some trouble on there way to civilization. Some bounty hunters attack the men but are defeated. Then the Baron Captain of this city picks up the two men and offers them a place to stay. The two stay with the Baron Captain until the massing, when everyone finds out the Eternal Champion's new identity. He is Prince Flamadin, who is said to have tried to kill his twin sister, Princess Sharadim. The Baron Captain now hates and tries to kill Flamadin. This is when the ghost women rescue him and tell him the truth.
The ghost women are at a marketplace buying men. But these men are not for food; rather they are banished noblemen from Princess Sharadim's land. They are telling the women the truth about the whole thing. Sharadim wanted to kill Flamadin for not wanting to share power.
The book goes on to show how the Eternal Champion battles against Sharadim and her evil army and to free the dragon from the evil sword. What is best about this book is that it almost gives a sense of completeness to the saga. I would greatly recommend this book to anybody who likes fantasy, especially fans of Michael Moorcock and the Elric saga.

Read this book after you've read "Eternal Champion" and "the Silver Warriors." Together, they tell the "whole" story of the common mortal, John Daker, who just happens to be the Eternal Champion.

The only other Moorcock books I've read so far are the Elric books, and I found these three books much better than any of those. If all you have ever read of Moorcock is Elric, I highly recommend these books. And if you love fantasy, but find much of what is written about elves and dwarves, etc., a bit childish, here is fantasy an adult can sink her/his teeth into.

In this book, John Daker, in the guise of Prince Flamadin, must save not just one world, but six entire worlds from destruction by Chaos. There's a great tie-in to the von Bek books, with Ulrich von Bek becoming Prince Flamadin's companion through most of the novel. The plot is satisfyingly complex, and the creatures Flamadin and his companions meet along the way are fascinating.

This book does some nice fleshing out of the concepts of the multiverse and the beings who can travel freely between universes, as well as the best explanation I've read yet of the true nature of the Eternal Champion. There is even somewhat of a "resolution" to the fate of the Eternal Champion.

But all is not philosophy and exposition. This book also has lots of great battles, swordplay, strange modes of travel through wormhole-like pathways, and lots of bad guys to be vanquished, including an appearance by Hitler.

The book actually does a good job of tying up many loose ends and gave me the satisfying feeling of completion that makes the best trilogies work. The tale has been told, you are sad to see your favorite characters go off into the sunset, yet you feel somehow that all is now right with the world and it couldn't have ended any other way.

Although, with Moorcock, there are, of course, other endings to this saga . . .

Erekose in Waterworld

My all time favorite book by Michael Moorcock, this installment of the Eternal Champion series features John Daker/Erekose and begins with him being drawn out of his previous existence into another plane where the polar ice caps have melted and the planet is flooded (as in the movie waterworld, but very dark because the sun is also close to it's death). John Daker is thrust into this world with no sword or sheild, but still well aware of the misdeeds he committed in previous existances. The story has a decidedly dark and confused tone as our hero struggles to figure out who summoned him into this existance, and why. As with all Moorcock, the writing is intriguing and only in the final chapter will you tie all of the storie's threads together. If you are a fan of the John Daker saga this book is a must have (it's listed as Being the "Third and Final Story in the History of John Daker, the Eternal Champion"). If when you read this review this book is still unavailable, I urge you to find a used book store.

STUDENT REVIEW

The novel Help! I'm Trapped in Obedience School Again was fantastic. Todd Strasser put funny and enthusiastic parts all through the story.

In this novel, the characters were believable. You could almost experience their problems. My favorite must be Foo Foo because she is really, really funny. She jumps all over Lance. The author did a good job on this character with describing the dog and her personality. She is a lovesick, fluffy mop.

In the novel, the author did keep your attention. One of the ways he did this is all the problems popping up one after another. My favorite one is when Jake's in Lance's body.

The Hungry Heart: A Woman's Fast For Justice is the personal story of Zoe Ann Nicholson. Twenty-two years after the fact, she speaks of the summer of 1982 when she joined six women in a fast to support the Equal Rights Amendment. Traveling to Illinois to gather support for ratification of the ERA, her firsthand experiences with the U.S. women's movement, the NOW leadership, and the legislators of the day are put forth in sweeping, unforgettable, personal terms, taken from own journal of her experience. For over thirty days, she subsisted on nothing but water, putting her body on the line for the sake of her beliefs. The experience transformed her, teaching her more about what she could live with and live without. Her revelations and message of strength and self-respect unfold clearly within the pages.

The Hungry Heart is now one of my favorite books about the women's movement. It is a passionate and moving account of Zoe Ann Nicholson's Fast for Justice during the struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment. From the first page to the last, Nicholson shares her most intimate thoughts and experiences during her non-violent resistance to social injustice. She draws you into her incredible personal journey of passion, sacrifice and sisterhood, and reveals her spiritual transformation along the way. Just try and put this book down - I couldn't! You will laugh, you will cry, and your heart will be touched.

The Hungry Heart by Zoe Ann Nicholson, an account of one woman who traveled to Illinois in 1982 to join a small group of women fasting for justice, for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. It is a poignant story of women's strength and endurance in the saga of the hundreds of thousands who struggled, starved, and died for equal rights for men and women in the US Constitution. As it is now 22 years later and we only need 3 more states--I am spearheading Florida's ratification and there are other states with ERA bills, this book inspired me to keep forging on.
I needed this. YOU need this. (And Amazon is unique in that it doesn't apparently have a book category 'Women's Issues' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAAAAAT?

An Honest Memoir For The Cause Of Justice
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-18
For many non-Americans and perhaps even Americans, the words Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) are meaningless. Consequently, in order to fully appreciate Zoe Ann Nicholson's memoir, The Hungary Heart,A Woman's Fast For Justice, it is necessary to understand what this legislation is all about.

Suffragist Alice Paul in 1921 drafted the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and it had been introduced into the US Congress in 1923. The proposed law had 3 basic sections:
Section 1- stated "that equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United State or any state on account of sex": Section 2-stated-"the congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article":
Section 3- stated- "this amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification":

The legislation seems simple enough and on face value it would appear that its passage would not be too difficult. However, such was not the case, and it was not until 1972, when the Congress of the USA finally passed it. However, it needed ratification endorsement by at least 38 states before it would become the law of the land. Furthermore, a deadline was placed on its ratification, June 30, 1982. There were thirty- five states that had ratified the legislation, leaving 3 states short of the required 38. One of these states was Illinois, where Nicholson's story and her titanic struggle transpired.

Nicholson was one of seven women, who assembled in the rotunda of the Illinois Statehouse in Springfield in May and June of 1982, and fasted only on water for 37 days. Their objective was to persuade the legislators and Americans that the equal-rights amendment must become part of the Constitution.
Illinois was chosen because this state required a 3/5, rather than a majority for ratification.

In the words of the author, she was a "satyagrahi." or an advocate of the philosophy of non-violence resistance, as practiced by Mahatma Gandhi, who had forced an end to the British Rule. When asked by reporters why was she fasting, Nicholson explained that this is the first time where she was putting her body and heart in the same place with the same intensity, and where she was not doing something useless or meaningless.

Throughout the memoirs we sense frustration on the part of these seven women as to why they had not witnessed from others the same rage and hunger for justice as theirs. Nicholson wanted to know what was holding back these individuals from showing their repulsion of a constitution that does not explicitly state that all human beings are equal under the law?
Perhaps, as the author points out, that a law cannot be legislated unless its "essence unfolds within the human heart."

Upon reflecting on Nicholson's memoir, I could not help reminding myself of the well-known saying of the famous Pharisee, Rabbi Hillel, who stated: "If I am for myself, who is for me? And if I am for myself only, what am I? And if not now, when."
Perhaps, this best sums up the author's concentrated involvement of her mind and soul in a conscious awareness for a worthy cause- although, unfortunately, the outcome was not what she and the other six women had in mind when they first set out on their fasting venture.

No doubt, this book could not have been written so honestly without the author's emotional attachment to a cause that she probably would have given up her life.

The ERA has still not become the law of the land and the only incontestable right women have in the American Constitution is the right to vote. In the 108th Congress (2003-2004) the ERA had been introduced and these bills placed no deadline on the ratification process.
Controversy and discussion still surrounds the issue and it is no small feat to predicate if or when the ERA will eventually be legislated into the Constitution.

This volume could also be called 'The Best of Richard Kern' as it presents a review of his work ranging from 1976 to 2001. Covering a wide range, we find bondage shots and girls with guns, as well as girls in the bedroom, bathroom and other scenarios, presenting an overview of Kern's interests and low-key fetish work.

Perhaps the strongest pictures are the close-up portrait shots, where the models reciprocate your gaze, as though daring you to enter their slightly dark and edgy world. In one shot, a small lizard crawls over a model's face, in the stark monochrome looking almost like a tribal tattoo. Most striking is the picture from 1993, simply titled 'Monica with Candle'. The model tilts her head backward and a lighted candle protrudes upright from her mouth. A very arresting picture the first time you see it (why that was not used on the cover is a mystery. Too provocative maybe?) Certainly a deeply erotic image.

Like all the best books of photography, this one starts well and gets better the more you look into it. A good one to keep on the bookshelf and delve into from time to time, and well worth buying.

The Savage Sands by Cristina Nicolson is the most erotic novel ever written. It is not cheesy eroticism like most bodice rippers. It is a tale of a woman sold into slavery in the 19th century, and its sense of raw sexuality is unparalleled. Catherine Scott is a nineteenth century version of perhaps an Alicia Silverstone, or even a Pamela Anderson. An innocent 16 year old Frenchwoman (American by birth) she is captured by a titled adventurer (whom she falls madly in love with) and because of her physical perfection and sensuality is sold to the Dey of Algiers, a bloodthirsty former pirate old enough to be her grandfather. The subplots alone are incredible, but this woman, prisoner of the walls of the Harem, finds it within herself to even love the lecherous old ruler, who falls in love with her as well. The love scenes between Hussein and Catherine are explicit and extremley erotic. The other plots that follow, while interesting, pale in comparison to the incredibly sexy passages that describe the three years that Catherine was Hassan's lover. At first she does not know what to think when she sees the ancient Hussein. But she soon finds the passion within herself to love the Dey of Algiers. He calls her to his bedchambers five times a week. 5 times a week, he brings her to the heights of passion as he makes love to her in his palace. She is rescued from his bedchambers only after Hussein has, after deflowering her, taught her singlehandedly the erotic arts of love. For 3 years Catherine and Hussein indulged in the arts of the Kama Sutra. She is rescued by the same adventurerer who sold her, who eventially marries and impregnates Catherine. But it was the Dey of Algiers, Hussein bin Hassan, who taught Catherine of the Savage Sands all the arts of intimacy, and the power of raw sexuality.

Savage Sands is the story of the trials and tribulations of young Catherine Scott, a young beauty from Paris who is abducted from France by a rogue Baron whom works for the Govenor of Algiers. Baron von Ricimer is quite taken by the physical perfection of Catherine, and decides to present her to the ancient Dey for his carnal amusement. She is personally instructed in the arts of the Kama Sutra, and the elderly lord completes her erotic apprenticeship in the bordello. The novel is based on events that actually happened in 1827-30, and we follow Catherine's sensual fate from the ballrooms of Paris to the bedroom of the most powerful man in Algiers, across the savage sands of the Sahara. She is truly an incredible woman, a physical likeness of a Heather Graham, or an Alicia Silverstone. Well written researched, and as fine a piece of historical erotica as was ever written...this novel will leave you wishing a screenplay would be written based on the story. Follow the incredible erotic journey, and the sexual escapades Catherine must go through while she at the same time becomes a legend to the very people she was forced to live among. Highly recommended.

The Savage Sands by Cristina Nicolson is the quintessential historical romance. Set in 18th century Paris and Algiers, it is the story of Catherine Scott, and all the trials and tribulations she goes through in 14 years as a slave of the Dey of Algiers, and as a hero to the very people she was forced to live among. Absolutley powerful, and incredibly erotic, as well as being a history lesson of the ongoing battle between France and Algiers. Why this was never made into a major motion picture is beyond me. Only 2 other movies of this variety were made. One is the 84 film with Ben Kingsley and Natasha Kinski, which for the most part lacked passion between the two principals. It's ending is also unsatisfactory. The second was the 86 made for tv movie, 'Harem" with the miscast Nancy Travis and the perfectly cast Omar Sharif as the Sultan. A modern day version could have Sharif playing the part of Hussein bin Hassan, and perhaps an actress such as a Sarah Michelle Gellar, or even a Pamela Anderson in the title role as Catherine.

Savage Sands is the incredible story of young Catherine Scott, a sexy blonde Parishoner, whom in her 16th year was cruelly abducted by a rogue baron, who stole her and three members of her family to carry them onboard his ship en route to North Africa. While on ship, she is instructed in the arts of the Kama Sutra, and told she will be sold to the Dey of Algiers to be used for his carnal amusement. The trials and tribulations she goes through as she suffers her erotic fate must be read to be believed. She is an incredibly strong woman of passion, and will stop at nothing to be with her true love. This is one of the sexiest novels in the HAREM genre, and the artwork on the cover of the book leaves one wondering about the erotic escapades residing within it's chapters. Catherine Scott physically is a mixture of a swimsuit model and a playmate of the nineteenth century. Her passionate adventures from the ballrooms in Paris to the bedroom of the most powerful man in Algiers, to the savage sands of the sahara are an erotic odessey that will leave you breathless, and seeking a movie based on the screenplay of the novel. Absolutley powerful, incredibly sexy, a must read for historical romance fans.

A.J. Quinnell's Siege of Silence is one of the most action-filled books I have read untill this day. This book shows how politics and old politicians can cause themselves excitement when it comes to wars and foreign countries. If you are not very familiar with what guerillas do and how much trouble they can cause, Siege of Silence is your book. A.J. Qunnell provides action, secrecy, mystery and even more action for those interested in such exciting topics.

A quick-paced tour-de-force, a hell of great book! After the whole embassy was taken over by the Cuban-trained terrorists, the American Ambassador, although a politically rewarded assignment by the White House, turned out to be a tough cookie, so tough that made the terrorists helpless even tortured him so ruthlessly. This story really enlightened me of how a man with true courage could standfast against the almost hopeless situation. The hero of this book made me think of Nelson DeMille's strong characteric creations in his WORD OF HONOR, THE CHARM SCHOOL, and BY THE RIVER OF BABYLON. A great book of true heroism!!

I have read litterally hundreds of books on WWII but this is one of the first on WW1. What a way to start. This book is really outstanding. I am about 3/4 of the way through and its still a great read and I have a hard time putting it down. The attention to detail is awesome, with the best part being the gripping natatives from the soldiers themselves. This book literally leaves the reader speachless at the horror of this battle. This book is amust-have for someone who wants to understand what WW1 was like for the average foot soldier in the trenches.

Many bloody battles have a moment, often commemorated in a painting, of a glorious death or act of defiance that makes the bloodletting and terror bearable, at least in retrospect. Napoleon leading his men across the bridge at Arcole, Armistead reaching for the Federal guns at Gettysburg, McAulliffe responding "Nuts" to the demand for surrender.

The Somme had more than its share of heroism, but nothing that makes a good painting or heartening story for schoolchildren. Instead the Somme is men venturing out from trenches to kill each other in a small, brown, inglorious landscape. My girlfriend calls the Hart's massive tome "the maggoty corpse book," and the great number of unburied bodies is a note running repeatedly in its many first hand accounts from soldiers of many lands.

Hart does tend to fault Rawlinson to what I thought was an excessive extent. Rawlinson's main fault seems to be not resigning rather than follow the direction of Douglas Haig. It should be noted that most generals leading their country's conscripts would have been sacked after the July 1 slaughter north of the Bapaume road, where numerous New Army battalions were mowed down for little lost to the Germans except ammunition. Haig was not. Haig retained the top command, set the tone, and the learning curve of the British Army after July 1st was an embarrasingly low and bumpy one. And Haig was still making the same mistakes of overambitious attacks in 1917.

Peter Hart has produced a number of books from the IWM "First Person Stories" which make a tremendous source for the historian seeking answers to "how could this have happened?" This new work, The Somme, along with Bloody April, are Hart's new works separate from long time co-author Nigel Steel.

The Somme is an outstanding, highly readable work which uses historical facts to tie together hundreds of first hand accounts of the battle. This book makes no attempt to put the unmitigated horror of the story into a larger historical framework of World War I. It tells the story of soldiers who endured the four month bloodbath of 1916 which produced little but to relieve pressure on the French at Verdun.

I highly recommend this work as an interesting and informative "read" that lets the reader draw his own conclusions about the waste of the "Pals Battalions".

A stunning achievement

For the British, Ypres and the Somme are the definitive battles of the Great War. In this retelling of the latter, Hart has set the standard by which the newest generation of Great War history will be measured. This is a magnificently researched and readable look at arguably the most deadly battle of that deadly war. Hart is curator of the Imperial War Museum's audio archive and he puts to good use his familiarity with that wonderful resource. The result is direct quotes from dozens of participating soldiers. These recorded histories are in large part new sources (at least for me as a reader of Great War history) as opposed to the letters, diaries, and official histories that usually make up the bibliograpy of works such as these. Add to this Hart's sharp writing style, insightful comments, and ease at making sense of chaotic and confusing battle scenes (something that unfortunately is too rare among WWI historians) and you have a book that is difficult to put down, no matter how much you already know about the Somme. The author also does not shrink from describing the horror of battle, and in fact devotes an entire chapter to the medical services (such as they were) at the Somme. He is critical more of Rawlinson and Gough than of Haig (although admiting that Sir Douglas was ultimately responsible for his army commanders' actions) and covers all the major actions of the battle in some detail. One is certainly reminded of Lyn McDonald's work when reading this, but Hart gives us more than McDonald did in her account of the Somme in that her focus on the stories of veterans left portions of the battle undiscussed. While McDonald's version remains a masterwork, Hart's will join it as a magnificent recounting of those 4 1/2 months in 1916.

You will love this book. I read it in two nights. I couldn't put it down. The characters are realistic and exciting. The relationships are intriguing and they make you think and wonder how you would react in the same situations. I can't wait to read the other installments so that I can find out how each situation ends up. I am particularly intrigued by Sweets, Wayne and Reggie. Kimmie is a piece of work too. This is a good story, a real page turner. You will love this book.
