A unique glimpse of Ireland before the Famine

Asenath Nicholson was a Christian radical-pacifist, abolitionist, vegetarian, feminist (of sorts)-who toured Ireland in 1844
on the eve of the Great Hunger, with the twin goals of investigating the condition of the Irish poor, and of spreading the
gospel among them. "Ireland's Welcome to the Stranger" is her account of her time in the cabins and manor houses, and is a
rare and (usually) sympathetic picture of pre-famine Ireland. Ms. Nicholson could be trying (quite judgemental, something
of a prude) both to her contemporary hosts and her current readers, but in the end her honesty, indefatigability and generosity
cover the bill. Of particular interest to this reader was her reporting of widespread hunger before the failure of the potato
crop. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the period.

This is the book for you. Written with human that's still contemporary after forty years, Herbert Wendt's romp from the "birth
of the West" to "the customs of the peoples" will entertain as it educates--the highest accolade I can offer. Throughout the
narrator traces the interweaving of legend, myth, and "historical event" in a way that brings new appreciation of the power
of storytelling to shape human consciousness--fears as well as hopes and dreams.

ITALIA: THE ART OF LIVING ITALIAN STYLE is a title that may be misleading. This is not a 'decorator's source book' (though
it certainly is an indispensable resource of information for any designer of interiors or exteriors!): this is a book rich
in the Italian ambience that marries a respect of history in all forms while providing some of the finest photographs of a
wide vista of Italian towns and gardens and homes. It is unique in its approach and a most rewarding read as well as a picture
tour through Italy.
Edmund Howard utilizes the gifts of photographer Oliver Benn in partnering this leisurely journey through all parts of Italy. The writing and the visuals are equal in quality and when paired as they are here they are inimitable. Howard divides the book into chapters: 'Towns and Landscapes' surveys the various regions from the north (Venice) through Tuscany to the south with Rome and Sicily; 'Architecture' details the forms or buildings as they have developed through centuries; 'Interiors' span the humble with the grand; 'Gardens' are explored in all varieties. Then Howard and Benn swoop down on a chapter titled 'Details': here Doors and Windows, Frescoes, Fountains, Colors, Stonework, and Mosaics are scrutinized with word and image, a point where the reader gains more information about the Italian style than in any other source.
Realizing that the book will seduce many to visit the land of all this beauty, the book closes with a 'Visitor's Guide' which succinctly outlines the most interesting places to see in all of the Italian and Sicilian towns, villages and cities surveyed in this book. This is a photographic feast and a completely entertaining and readable as well as informative book. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

I love Jack Nicholson. I recommend this book for anybody who wants a serious study of his best acting roles. Don't buy it
if you're looking for a glossy 'star' fan book, as this is a collection of essays by film critics. It makes a refreshing change
to see Jack's work taken this seriously.

I'm surprised that this book is considered out of print as I just bought it in a bookshop at Gatwick Airport on my way back
from my first trip to Israel. I strongly recommend seeing Jerusalem before reading this, as then you will have a picture of
the city in your mind before hearing the inside story on some of the landmarks. This book is better than a guide even though
it does demand a little prior knowledge of the city and the Bible. Congratulations to Mr. Elon on his religous neutrality.
I'd be glad to chat to anyone out there about this great country: pfinn50379@aol.com

a controversial look at Jesus' message

Rudolf Bultmann is well-known for his demythologizing program. This book presents in clear fashion some of Bultmann's main
ideas. Right from the very beggining, Bultmann makes clear that we can almost know nothing about the historical Jesus. The
New Testament data on Jesus is quite limited, and anyhting else would be pure speculation. However, this doesn't mean that
we can't inmerse ourselves into the world of Jesus' message. Even if we can't say much about his life, there is a lot to be
said about his preaching.
To do so, Bultmann relies upon an existentialist approach (although he does not mention the name Martin Heidegger). Jesus' praching is centered on decision. "Either-Or" are the central words used by Bultmann to understand Jesus' message. Through a clever analysis of many of Jesus' recorded sayings, Bultmann makes clear that man is facing decision at every moment of his life. This decision must be complete, commited. It can not be done halfway. Bultmann pays special attention to Jesus' eschatological preaching. For Bultmann, the Kingdom of God is very much like death, it has not arrived yet, but it wholly shapes our present lives. The Kingdom is not some socio-political entity as it was thought during Jesus' time. The Kingdom is already here, it is man's decision for himself.

Whether one's interest is primarily in exploring the genuine history which gave rise to the legend of King Arthur, or in the
development of Arthurian literature, this handy volume will prove most useful and convenient. It is a well-considered selection
of the most important Arthurian source materials.

This is absolutely a wonderful book. It does an excellent job in depicting the life, culture, and history of rural Corfu.
The food recipes are wonderful. However, I have to emphasize that this is not just another recipe book. It is more of an
inside look into the life of rural Corfu.
