I picked up this book by chance and then I couldn't put it down. It paints a wonderful picture of life after the Second World War of various people connected with a mansion in England. It's an "upstairs and downstairs" type of story where you get to feel how life was for each of the characters through their diaries and letters. There is even a child's contribution throughout the story complete with realistic spelling mistakes appropriate for her age! The story is at once complicated and simple, but never boring. The author's vocabulary and the way each of the characters "speak" adds much to the authentic atmosphere. I can't wait to read another book by this author! If it's even half as good as this one, I'll enjoy it.

This story has a great moral to it as well as being very entertaining and interesting to both children and adults. The plus side of the cassette is that Jack Nicholson tells it in such a way that everyone will enjoy listening to it over and over again. The illustrations are perfect to fit the story and are great at intriguing the children. We have had this story through both of our sons and they both STILL enjoy this book. Hopefully will pass it on to the grandchildren. Tell your friends and family about this one.

I am 19 years old now and I remember listening to this tape as a child...
I still listen to it. This is the kind of children's story that both adults and children alike will enjoy. Bobby Mc Ferrin does the background sound effects and his performance is also magical.

I also Recomend the Elephant's child read by Nicholson with Bobby doing all of the sound effects.
I love the music "MMm Kola kola kola mmmm..."

This book-tape set has to be one of the best books on tape that rabbit ears has produced. Jack Nicholson's smooth magical voice is just perfect with predictably great music from Bobby McFerrin. A must for every child's library!

Gorgeous photography of gorgeous Irish homes

Famed designer Sybil Connolly has edited a magnificent collection of ancestral Irish homes in "In an Irish House." Each of the homes shown herein has stories told in first person by their current occupants, most of whom are the fifth, eighth, twelfth, or even the ninety-sixth generations of their families to live in the home--yes, the O'Conors of the home called Clonalis in County Roscommon are the ninety-sixth generation of O'Conors to live in the area (they trace their lineage back to 75 A.D.!).

This book shows us magnificent architectural detail, ranging from Gothick to Italianate to Palladian and beyond; extraordinary oil paintings ranging from portraits of Queen Elizabeth I to local landscapes done by artists like Reynolds and Gainsborough; sumptuous furniture (including the only known extant set of Chippendale furniture still in private hands on p. 125); and lush grounds surrounded by craggy mountains, fast-running streams, and handsome mature trees. A family member from each of the homes tells the story of the home, from its architectural background and significance in the history of the country, to its quirks and oddities which are there to delight the current family. Each of the residents even provides several recipes, ranging from the elegant to the purely simple.

"In an Irish House" is a delight for anyone who loves the architecture of castles and other grand homes, and a treat for anyone who just likes to take a peek into the homes of people who really know how to live!

In Defence of Politics

This is one of the greatest books in the 20th century!

I cannot believe that I am the first one to do a review ofBernard Crick's great masterpiece, "In Defense of Politics."This is a honor that forces me to question my worthiness. Crick so aptly understood that the aiming for a kind of absolutist perfection in any human relationship is dooming oneself to inevitable bitter disillusionment. This may especially be true within the political sphere. Those who indulge in a virtual cult of adoring specific "great men" totally misunderstand the goal of politics. Democracy can never be more than an attempt to search out a workable compromise between disagreeing citizens. A certain agnosticism concerning one's position is often required; a dogmatic true believer mentality may indeed become dangerous and threaten the very tenuous underpinnings of our governmental institutions. We must indeed strive to improve our political process. It is even a moral obligation to do so. Nonetheless, The search for the perfect and virtuous leader to give one's unhesitating allegiance and adoration has always resulted in a hell on earth.

The political process is often yucky, disappointing, and after much effort may leave one at best with a half a loaf result. It has been said that there are two things someone with a weak disposition may wish to avoid---viewing the processing of sausage and the making of human law. Am I a cynic and possessing a defeatist attitude? The answer is an adamant no! On the contrary, Crick and I recognize the glorious possibilities of an evolving civilization premised upon frail and imperfect human beings. It takes incredible physical, intellectual and moral diligence to bring about viable human relationships of any sort. What we have so far accomplished in Great Britain and the United States is of mind boggling beauty and structural effectiveness. Bernard Crick understands the limits of politics and that a democratic society deserves two cheers, not three. Winston Churchill paradoxically said it best--democracy is usually disappointingly awful--it's simply better than all the other political systems devised and implemented throughout human history.

I do not have time now to write comprehensively about all the wonderful treasures I found in this book. There is the history of the industial mid-west around the turn of the last century, the intellectual climate of Harvard and Europe, especially Germany during the 1920s, also an account of an encounter between young Allport and Freud. What is revealed is the factors leading to the intellectual formation of Gordon Allport, a pre-eminent American psychologist. Unlike most others in his field, he was motivated by a deep and intense spiritual commitment. It is a great read, and should be of interest to many thoughtful people in general as well as to those psychologists, such as myself, who have been influenced by Allport's ideas.

I have read this book several times for the honours course at Dundee University in Investor Protection. The book contains concise chapters on subjects such as the supervision of banks and regulation of investment firms. No other book gives such wide coverage. There is also very useful introductory chapters on the main concepts.
