This book is peppered with terrific examples and exercises, driving home both the theoretical and the practical. It's pace is gentle enough to ensure the reader absorb the basics, but swift enough to keep you on your toes. Nicholson encourages a high level of consideration and participation from the reader. I was sorry to see it's out-of-print...if you're interested in linear algebra, you may well want to hunt a copy down.

I went to England for the first time and loved the countryside! It is so vibrant. My own photographs have never turned out very well so I bought this book while I was there to capture the England that I fell in love with. It has a wide range of beautifully photographed cottages and gardens. I am online buying 2 more copies as gifts for friends.

My Favourite Book - Ever
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-05
This is one of my favourite books of all time - I even own two copies as the first got damaged by constant use by me, my family AND my friends. It is a must for anyone who finds the aesthetically pleasing beautiful to behold. Page after page of sumptuous photography, quite excellently executed camerawork which brings to life the glorious buildings and their histories, accompanied by short snippets of tantalising information. Thanks to this book I've visited over half of the one hundred or so churches, many down obscure country lanes forgotten about by the busy world rushing by. No matter what one's religious views the sheer splendour of these buildings is heavenly.

The Particular Flavor of the Cotswolds
Helpful Votes: 38 out of 39 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-25
Writer Sarah North with photographer Mark Nicholson take us through a stroll of Cotswold homes in a most unique way. The Cotswolds region is in central England, covering an area bounded by Oxford, Stratford, Cheltenham and Bath, an area known for quaint villages and scenic countryside. The term 'Cotswold' for most homeowners conjures visions of serene beauty of habitat and this excursion brings us closer to those elements that denote the Cotswold flavor.

But what North and Nicholson have elected as a tour is to knock on doors of various citizens who are not necessarily those with wealth, moneywise, but those who make life more beautiful. We visit the homes of florists, designers, craftsmen - the regular people of the streets and lanes of this beautiful region, and the book feels like a neighborly stroll. Interiors demonstrate the use of the elements of Cotswold design that are often copied in United States homes, but here retain the basic simplicity of functional design.

The paths and gardens are also scanned in this beautifully designed book. For those interested in traveling through England or for those with special interest in the Cotswold style, this book is well worth the investment. Grady Harp, May 06

I worked for the U.S. Marshals Service for 25 years. I did an extensive amount of protective services work. As in any military or law enforcement profession, having checklists to work with is an invaluable aid to the professional. This product is an exceptional resource that every true personal protection specialist should have on him, or very close nearby.

I hadn't realised that the bible story of the Exodus was so literal. I had assumed, naively it seems, that the story of the Exodus was probably based on events of sorts, but that the ideas were so extreme that the possibility of them actually happening was impossible. Ian Wilson makes them sound highly probable.

At times the writing did lose me. The discussion can fall into the esoteric and takes time to work through. His first issue is to try to establish the possible date of the event. It doesn't fall easily into the bible, many events of which can be dated easily, and because there is a time line mentioned in the bible. there needed to be slavery of jews or Hibiru in Egypt, and other signifiers.

Wilson knowledgeably discusses the events both from Egyptian and biblical history. He ably draws in archaelogical evidence from the area, and around the Mediterrenean which significantly point to the fact that these events could have happened.

At times with biblical archaeology I get the sense of evidence being used in revisionist ways to justify a result rather than academically viewed. I don't get that with Wilson. His introduction and first chapters discuss the likelihood of when the exodus fragment might have been written and why. In this he acknowledges that it was written several centuries after events, and due to the limitations of an oral tradition might have been embellished over time as well. So picking apart the evidence which provides a reality to it is important.

I found the book dispassionate, and much more convincing for this. I have enjoyed reading it and it has opened up an area of fascination about the topic, I am interested to read more now.

Excellent starter for the subject

The book gives a very comprehensible and accessible narrative for anyone pursuing an interest in this subject. Starting from the fall of the Roman Empire and ending with the last entry in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle the reader comes away with a very satisfying account of Saxon England. This book is by no means "dry." Richard Humble manages to give personality to the people that he is writing about and concentrates on telling the story than give a lesson. Most importantly it makes one want to pick up more books on the subject. The book is not a definitive work, but it is a wonderful general overview and a great addition to an armchair historians library.
