CHRIST AND SOPHIA IN US

Review Date: 2001-01-06
There is indeed a re-awakening of the female deity, mostly for me since 1975. This book may be a little difficult for some people, so look for the highlights of Sophia with Christ, our twin hopes of glory. The Twin-Saviors are explained in the book "Pistis Sophia", G.R.S. Mead, sayings taken from the books of the Savior. Rabbi Novick wrote about her as the Shechinah, Divine Mother as Chochmah (Wisdom) same meaning for Sophia . Jesus is indeed her "light twin, and spouse",as Stephan A. Hoeller writes. The re-awakening comes from Above, the Spirit, the Logos, the Savior, and the whole world must accept the Gnosis of this fact to find the "First Mystery" as Jesus explained in Pistis Sophia. The Front picture is beautiful of Sophia, and all the writers should be highly exalted for their efforts to bring the Gnosis of the Savior to the lost children in the world. Also, "She Who Is", Elizabeth Johnson, should be read alongside this book, with "Prayers to She Who Is , William Cleary, who wrote the most true words ever said about Sophia. Jesus and Sophia are Twins, male and female from the Pleroma. When Jesus spoke of the "Fall" of Sophia, he was also referring to his material life on earth, and his distress, thinking his sister Sophia was gone, and she was not, she was his own soul. By the prophets, this doctrine of Gnosis can be proven. This is a very valuable book to the world. Thanks to all the writers.

feminine divine in multiple layers

Review Date: 2004-11-22
I originally bought this book thinking that it would be a sort of pop-culture type of diva/goddess-women power book. I got more than that! I got a glimpse of the multi-layered aspects of what Goddess means today in the modern world. This is not just a book on feminism, or eco-feminism, this is not just a book about women's spirituality... This is a book on the underlying concepts and principles and also about the history and movement of institutionalized patriarchal energies... and the history and movement of matri-focal(not matriarchy as this implies dominant rule-dominant is a male energy) or feminine energies.

The essays of this book are a good read for both the "beginner" feminist and the well-read feminist activist or scholar. Amazon provides a table of contents so do read what this book has to offer.

I especially learned a lot from the essay of Elizabeth Dodson Gray, "Nature as an Act of Imagination" whereby she illustrates a patriarchal worldview. It educated me and made me acutely aware of the balanced, organic worldview that the movement of feminism is helping uphold in the world(along with other movements of justice and equality and of healing and wholeness).

If you peruse the table of contents you will find that the editor of this anthology of essays did attempt to bring together a variety of sources (Buddhist, African, Native American, Western, European)... and that there are truly multiple aspects of the importance and value of the feminine divine manifesting in women's work at home, in institutions, in community and in humanity.

LONDON CALLING

This is a very comprehensive guide to the varied architecture of London. London is, of course, one of the worlds great cities, and as such, it possesses some world class architecture. London architecture is not uniform and prefectly planned out out like, for instance, Paris, but it is interesting none the less. I love Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture and London has this in abundance, sadly following the Blitz, London developers built hideous buildings, London got the worst of the so called "modern" architecture of the 50's and 60's. This guide is very well layed out and is easy to navigate. If you have any interest in this great city, then I highly recommend this book.

The all-inclusive guide to London architecture of all eras

This is a thorough treatment of London architecture, covering not only iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace (although they're here too), but as well, buildings from all eras across Greater London. Post-WWII architecture is surprisingly well represented. The region is divided into a grid of 24 squares, each of which is illustrated with a detailed map (except outlying areas), and this grid is used for organizing the book into chapters. In all, over 900 buildings are included, each with a 2 inch x 2 inch photo and a description of three or four sentences. Floor plans are shown for each of Wren's churches and for a handful of other buildings. Appendices have maps showing 'The Great Estates,' London squares in chronological order, and 'The Inns of Court.'

Part of the "Stories from Where We Live" series, The Gulf Coast: A Literary Field Guide is a collection of poems, essays, recipes, historical accounts, and true stories about the Gulf Coast region. Written for all ages from kids to adults, The Gulf Coast is as educational as it is entertaining, and the stories within tell of a legend about a Mississippi Choctaw hunter and an alligator; ivory-billed woodpeckers observed by John Audubon; violent hurricanes and mild winters; and land ranging from the watery Everglades to the Rio Grande delta to the beaches of South Padre Island. Black-and-white illustrations intersperse this amazing tour of a rich and diverse land, and the people, plants, and animals who inhabit it.

The best in interactive fiction

This has got to be one of the best gamebooks ever written. The story takes place several hundred years in the future in a post-apocalyptic setting. Gaia, a supercomputer that was designed to combat global warming and other climate problems by regulating the world's climate, has gone "mad"- whether from a virus, a malfunction, or some other reason, it has used its abilities to produce devastating consequences for the world. In the time that the story takes place, most of the world's population has been wiped out, save for a few scattered pockets of civilization. YOU play the role of a survivor in this harsh world. Rumors about the Heart of Volent- a meteorite that fell to earth centuries ago- reach you. The one who finds it will supposedly obtain unimaginable powers. You set out to find the heart- but there are others who seek it as well, for reasons which may be disastrous for everyone else should they succeed.
The story is extemely descriptive, involving, and well developed. The characters are more well devoloped than what you'd find in most gamebooks. As far as gameplay goes, the difficulty level is about right- challenging, but not extremely difficult. Multiple pathways, i.e. many different possible directions for your character to take, make this a book you can read many times with different results. If you like gamebooks, this is a must read; if you've never read a gamebook but you enjoy science fiction, I definitely recommend this as well, since the story reads almost like a novel. Dave Morris really produced a winner with this one, and Russ Nicholson's detailed illustrations are a nice touch.

an unusual look at perception and creativity
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-21
The author of this book, who died in 1966, was an art student in Vienna and later lectured in art in England. He wrote the book in the sixties, when the Gestalt theory of perception was very much in vogue. His view of truly creative perception, however, is very different from the Gestalt view. He maintains that Gestalt perception is analytic in nature, since part of Gestalt theory focuses on how we separate a figure from its background in order to give meaning to what we see. Accordingly, it demands a certain maturity in the human brain's development, and only begins to be used by children around the age of eight.

Citing research papers on development and perception, Ehrenzweig argues that younger children and artists use what he terms "undifferentiated perception" in perceiving the world--this form of perception is holistic and non-hierarchical. It makes no distinction between figure and ground, or between main subject and minor subject. He believes that on an unconscious level, we are all continuously scanning the environment in this way. However, only small children and some adults are open to the information thus gained.

One example he uses of how an adult uses non-differentiated perception is a chess master who is able to plot several moves ahead. Since each potential move has several possible subsequent moves, the permutations of possibilities inherent in a few moves ahead are truly daunting, and the use of one's analytic ability to evaluate them all would require more time than is available. Ehrenzweig maintains that the chess master does not evaluate a series of moves in an analytical manner, but rather uses non-differentiated perception, which allows many more computations to be carried out on a subconscious level.

His arguments are compelling, and after cultivating undifferentiated perception myself, and raising young children who did seem to use it quite naturally, I was convinced that he was on to something. I've had this book since 1988 and still refer to it when I'm thinking or writing about issues in perception, creativity, or consciousness. However, there does not seem to have been much written about this topic in the scientific journals in the years since the book was published. Not being trained in psychology or perception, I cannot comment on why this is so. Nevertheless, the book has changed the way that I experience and think about my own mind. Moreover, it has helped me greatly in my creative projects, as well as in picking up information from the environment that later turns out to be quite useful.

Here's the Fine Arts taken from a profound psychoanalytical viewpoint. If you're a Freudian philistine, then this book will be arduous for you. However, if you've read your 12 volumes and pondered over "The Scream" by Munch, then this book will enrich your personal interpretations of modern art. Timeless classic that you'll not be able to put down. My favorite tidbit, the spider and Thanatos.

The highly mannered style and aggrandized gaze of Nicholson's world nevertheless delights and enchants the reader with the silken kaleidoscope of sensory values pulled through narrow golden hoop of the written page. Indiana's lace-edged tintype history gleams with romance, mystery, substance. I am proud to own this signed first edition, and collect Nicholsons where others have imprudently overlooked them. The story begins as the hero enters the scene, nodding at the criminal foil, the stately and perfect heroine(American style if you please,) and the lifelong friend of the old school. Never again shall a writer look to the future and look back over the shoulder of American History with such finesse. A grand mystery, may Hollywood never grab it!

I read this book and it was very interesting, the folks of Nicholson Hollow are my grandfathers parents. I never knew any of this until I read the book. The pictures are great, the stone work displayed is a tradition that was passed down to my grandfather, father and brothers.I was truly amazed at the article .This is a great piece of history ,the sad thing is this part of the forest was distroyed by fire around 2000 or 2001.

Acheologist Audrey Horning has written a brilliant and startling reappraisal of the people who lived in the mountains of Virginia prior to the incorporation of Shenandoah National Park. The infamous book "Hollow Folk" had unfairly portrayed these people as broad stereotypes -- unlearned, uncouth, and totally removed from the rest of society -- characterizations that have persisted for decades. Horning has used a combination of archeological research and impressive genealogical work to debunk many of the myths of the mountain society. Her book is an enjoyable and informative mixture of text and photographs, both period and contemporary. The Epilogue is especially concise and considered.

Horning has done a great service to the descendants of these remarkable mountain people. I have read many books on the subject, and hers is by far the best.

Outstanding addition to your Ferrari collection

Review Date: 2007-01-08
I had read about this book several months back, and, having followed Ferrari Formula 1 racing since the early 1970s, I had to have it. The photography is excellent, although most of the pictures are behind the scenes at Maranello or at various racing circuits around the world. The cars and the crews definitely take frontstage here, with the drivers being mentioned secondarily.

The author and photographer were given access to the team during the time that Rubens Barrichello was Michael Schumacher's teammate. This was definitely the modern golden age of Ferrari, with 5 straight driver's championships for Schumacher. The insider information is nice, but if you really follow Formula 1 you have probably heard much of this before.

What I liked best was the section featuring the tour of Enzo Ferrari's old office, the comparison of the racing and road car divisions of the factory, and the details of both Maranello and Fiorano, the two test tracks that Ferrari owns. The fact that the team can take the cars out, run full racing lengths daily, wet down the track as needed to test tires, etc. shows how important racing is to the workers that have taken Ferrari to the pinnacle of the pinnacle of motorsport.

At the price, this book is a steal. Stop reading and buy it!

I bought this book for my dad for Christmas. We are huge Ferrari fans and it's great to have a book on Ferrari that has some authenticity... there are stax of book on Ferrari, the cars, the F1 team and so on, but few of them have any real ties to the factory.

This is where this book is different. The foreword is by Jean Todt, the photographer is a hugely respected F1 photographer and the guy who wrote the bits between the photos is one of the most successful F1 writers around - a great recipe!

The authors were given exclusive access to Ferrari. Anyone who has been to the factory will know how secretive and restricted it is for visitors and appreciate seeing this hidden side of Ferrari.

If you are a Ferrari fan, you will want to add this one to your collection!

This book is a useful overview of the processes involved in learning to read. It cover comprehension, learning to read, and phonological awareness. This book discusses the different types of reading instruction which is usually shrouded in controversy but this discusses different processes that different teaching methods create, rather than a debate over which reading instruction is better.
