This new edition of Whitehead's book, which has already become a classic in esoteric/mystical Christianity, will be a delight to students. The formatting and binding are much improved, and lovely CD recordings of the meditations are in a handy pocket in the back. There is also some new material. All who are interested in the living symbolism of the Christian tradition will find this book a valuable and much-consulted resource.

I read this book for a research paper on the Russian Revolution and I must say that it was excellent. The information was self explanatory and concise. It was all around a generally fun book to read. I recomend it to those who are interested in Russian history but who do not like to have to read a book with a dictioary by their side.

An agreement to exchange murders
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-16
Two men agree to exchange each other's murders to provide themselves with a perfect alibi. Parts of the plot are very similar to that of Strangers on a Train, and the author acknowledges this at the beginning of the book. One of the men seems much more admirable than the other, but is he really? Suspense as the plot unfolds.

A Perfectly Striking Departure: Surgeons And Surgery At The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital 1912-1980 follows the seventy-year growth of the teaching arm of the Harvard Medical School, an initially small facility which attracted an international faculty. From the influences of different surgeons-in-chiefs to changes in academic departments and perspectives, chapters follow the growth, evolution and influences of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital; and while this might be a specialty acquisition for many collections any interested in medical history will find it a fine survey.

The Perricone diet works for wieght, health and skin tone! The thing is, you've got to love seafood, especially salmon. The diet is based on consuming antiinflammatory foods and drinks, such as fish, certain vegetables and fruits, walnuts, almonds, green tea... and lots of water. The concepts are well presented and easy to grasp. The book includes menus and recipes. My husband (6' 1") went from wieghing 209 to 194, and I went from 101 to 96 - perfect for my small 5' frame. (My blood pressure went from 187/95 to 120/80. My husband's dropped as well, but he was already in a normal range.) We recommend the book and the diet to anyone wanting to look and feel better - but again, you've got to like seafood!

To read the past and make new literature of it

Petrarch is a central figure in the story of Western Culture. His turning to ancient literature, his scholarship, textual analysis and literary works were a stepping stone to the Renaissance. His own literary projects vast and ambitious were perhaps less important than the interest he created in both the revival of ancient learning, and the turning to Nature as source for literary inspiration. His vast literary projects in which he intended to contend and in some way outdo his great masters, Cicero , Vergil and on the Christian side Augustine fell by and large flat. What remains of his that is somewhat read today is the Sonnets . In the biography Mann shows how for Petrarch the writing of them too was as much and even more a project of his literary ambition than of his life- love. Petrarch is a great scholar whose vast worlds of interests, and tremendously energetic mind inspired the generations who came after. This excellent study is a very good introduction to his life and work.

Short of REVOLUTION, this book gives a lot of helpful advice in getting the most out of your petrol dollar. With a toung and cheek references to Marx, (I know, I didn't think that Marx had a funny side either) Mr. Rand pokes The Jolly Oil Giant in the gut and asks, "Why you so fat?!" Then he gives common sense steps that any one can do to reduce fuel cost. I was just kidding about Revolution, but a peaceful uprising wouldn't hurt. Write your congressman, and editors of your local paper. Call in to radio and cable call in programs. Email CNN, MSNBC, and your local station. Let them know how you feel. One of the main things we as a people have to do is get The Jolly Oil Giant out of our local Congressmans back pocket! Tell them, if they take money from big oil in any way shape or form, they won't have your vote. Realistically, with the demand in China and India ever increasing, The price of oil is never going to go down. The demand is to high. We need break the bonds that other countries have on our economy. Yes, I said OTHER COUNTRIES!! How did we win thw Cold War? We out-spent the U.S.S.R. Could it be that some of these other countries have taken a page out of our book and silently declared WAR on us? Perhaps, this is much bigger than we think!!
I digress, I enjoyed the book. I found myself laughing a few times too. It's worth the money! Really it is!

Philosophical Reasoning: A Study in the Methodology of Philosophizing
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-Blackwell (2001-10-17)

Philosophy that makes sense
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-23
This is a book on the philosophy of philosophy. Rescher is one of the best writers of philosophy today. He explains why philosophy never comes to a final solution on issues, but is always making progress. Although answers raise more questions, Rescher demonstrates that this is actually a good thing because new issues keep philosophical study and research alive and interesting.

Chapter 7 "Philosophical Aporetics" and Chapter 9 "The Impact of Distinctions" should be read by every student of philosophy. Rescher demonstrates that arguments with plausible premises which conflict with each other are often capable of resolution through thoughtful reasoning. Most important among the tools for argument resolution is the drawing of distinctions. Rescher gives detailed examples of such reasoning in the history of philosophy (going back to Plato and the Presocratics) and in current issues.
