A Gothic Romance...

Review Date: 2004-08-05
Tom Wells, a young American writer is living on the French Riviera when his money runs out. He meets up with Paul Ehrenhardt, a dapper, obviously wealthy, international type who hires him as his confidential secretary although he has no secretarial duties, but acts more as a Man Friday for some mysterious projects.

Tom's first task is to entertain Anna, Paul's seductive wife, for which he is given a fat expense account and the run of the Riviera gambling casinos and restaurants. His next task is to rent a half-ruined medieval castle in the hills of Provence without letting on who his employer is. And finally he has to find a girl...any girl...who is about nineteen, French, beautiful, blonde, aristocratic in manner, without a family or other ties, and able to disappear for a few months.

Tom is paid handsomely, but, unfortunately for his employer's mysterious scheme, he falls in love with the girl he finds, and is completely distraught when she disappears as planned. Naturally his suspicions turn to the vast, dank, lonely ruins of Castle Garac. So off to the castle he goes...

Finally, a no-nonsense how-to management primer!

Dear friends,

Finally, someone with tons of experience took the time to explain, with humour, how to manage and get results. This useful how-to manual will be an invaluable tool in the hands of anyone who has to manage a business concern, whatever its size, from SME to multinational. I can personally vouch for it, being the managing director of a medium-size multimedia communications and public relations consulting firm, MMDH Communications Inc., based in Montreal, Canada. After but a few weeks, my associates managed to increase their monthly billings by 19%. The advice given in the CEO's Pocket Bible is straightforward, no-nonsense, candid and extremely potent, plus it's funny to read, too. I'd say it should be compulsory reading material for anyone wishing to enter - and survive in - today' business world, as well as in any MBA program. For the price, it's not only money well spent, it's a guaranteed investment in success!

Concise Package of 20th Century British Theatre
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

"Changing Stages," the companion volume to the PBS television, is a triumph. Bravo to the authors Richard Eyre and Nicholas Wright for bringing their insider know-how on to the page. Eyre was the artistic director of the Royal National Theatre. Wright was an associate director with the Royal National Theatre, as well as being an actor and playwright.

There are no wasted breaths here. One cannot spare any as 100 years of theater are seamlessly encased in this volume. The encyclopedic knowledge is enhanced with stunning and arresting black-and-white photos. The subtitle, "A View of British and American Theatre in the Twentieth Century," however is misleading. The main focus is the British theatre. Eyre and Wright examine the American (Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams), Irish (William Butler Yeats) and other nation's theatre only to illustrate the effects on Britain's theater community and vice versa. Some exceptions are the Bavarian-born enigmatic Bertolt Brecht and Ireland's Oscar Wilde; both are given ample room due to their profound influence. But British playwrights and their plays are the lion's share of the book. British actors, such as Laurence Oliver and John Gielgud, are mentioned for their contributions to the "structural change to the theatre."

"Changing Stages" is broken down into 14 topics, including: Shakespeare, Wilde and After. A timeline is also furnished: a reference to grasp the past century of live performance in an easy manner. The witty and lucid writing is irresistible. Both novice and seasoned theatre lover will find this book a welcome addition to their library. One can read straight through or pluck jewels via the topics or index guide. Eyre and Wright are magicians for materializing a concise package of 20th century theatre within 400 pages. A joyous read for any fan of this living art.

Frontline Baptisms and the Baptism of Fire

Chaplain Davis held firm to his faith and his bible, and, in his diary, he meticulously recorded the most detailed insights and observations of General John Bell Hood and the brigade. This book actually surprised me, I was expecting a plain and boring ministerial observation of God, Hell, and those demon Yankees. In fact, Davis recorded some of the most interesting facts that I have ever read relating to Hood, the brigade, and the Civil War. He was careful to write, almost instantly, the exact words that Hood spoke and shouted to the brigade. Regarding marches, brigade assignments, battle casualties and results, and of course the soldiers' deaths, Davis kept detailed records. His diary, it is fair to say, is similar to the astute unit historian's account. I highly recommend it.

A great Chi Referance!

Review Date: 2008-02-20
This is a great book for the breeder or show owner, but also a great referance for the pet owner as well!

The chapters include Chihuahua Origins, Develoment in the US, and pages 27-74 have details on some of the most well know lines in the chis: Bayard, Dartans, Flints, H and J, Hurds, Jo-el, Micanjo, Pittore, Pratt's, Quachitah (Ouachitah or BamBam), Tiny Mite and Will O Wisp to name a few. It tals about how they got started, where they got their dogs and show photos of some of there CH's.

There are also photos and chapters on Chis in Canada, the UK and Australia.

Pages 96 - 160 are color photos, and some of the most well know chi's can be seen in these pages.

The last third of the book has chapters on Owning a chi, buying a chi, puppy care, the making of a show dog, chis and obedience training, breeding (25 pages) and traveling with your chi.

A must have for those that love the chi!

This is a wonderful narrative of a childhood spent in Trinidad. There were so many similarities between my experiences and those of Ms. Bridges though our respective childhoods occured decades apart. It was beautiful and lyric and poignant and funny. Most memorable was the description of the toddler Yseult's memories of childhood flight and the reaction of her horrified nanny. I certainly wish that this book was still readily available. I'd love to read it again.
