I'm 14 and read "American Satire" because I am very interested in the subject. This book was, in my opinion, was enjoyable and interesting. Some of the satire was over my head, therefore a little boring, but the nice thing about short stories is that you can always go back to them. Benjamin Franklin, Will Rogers, Ambrose Bierce, and Art Buchwald were my favorites. This book also gives a little background information on the authors who wrote the stories. My only problem with the book itself was that some of the stories are just excerpts from larger books. I would've liked to see the complete version of the "The Devil's Dictionary" because it is extremely funny. But if your interested in satire or American literature, this is something that you'll want to check out.

What better way to learn classical style than immersion by analyzing and composing? This is the best book I've ever seen for putting it all together while keeping it interesting and challenging for students.
For many years I've only read these book reviews, but "Analysis through Composition" inspired me to write my first with a rave.

I could not put this book down. This is an excellent book on pre-Columbian America. The book presented a very stimulating account of the major civilizations in Mesoamerica and the Andes. The text illustrations and color plates were very helpful. If you need to read one book on pre-Columbian America, this should be it! This should be a required reading at the college level. Hats off to Nicholas Saunders.

Concise, vivid, and generous

This is a short lively book on two centuries in one city - 5th and 4th century Athens. The first 50 pages give quick context on the Greek world from 6500 BC. This is very helpful towards understanding the great stories of the past that Athenians all knew, and explaining the origin of the Athenian city plan and political order. Jones's vivid account of Mycenean palaces gave me a whole new sense of Homer and the characters in Greek tragedy.

Then the book settles into the city. Jones describes its physical arrangement, government and religion, the main political and economic groups, family structure, and the life patterns of typical occupations: farmers, laborers, craftsmen. Jones has a great way of picking lively details. My favorite is his account of archaeological finds on a street that Socrates used to frequent. It is a very good balance of overview and detail, for a quick look at Athens.

One striking feature of the book is how clearly Jones describes other interpretations competing with his own, and how he uses that to make the book more lively and attractive. It does not come across as bickering, but as exploring possibilities. He is generous enough to give sympathetic accounts of many other views (though I suppose the people he disagrees with may not agree with me!). Much of this material is necessarily conjectural, as the sources are quite sparse. Jones makes a few very helpful remarks on the the extent of existing archaeological evidence.

And of course the book gives good suggestions for further reading on many topics.

I found And Forgive us Our Sins to be an amazing story about this Italian Gay man. I am not sure how he really has kept going all these years. If I suffered from half of what he has been through, I probably would have given up years ago. Somehow though Mr. Mirabella has continued to strive and have strength in the lord to keep him going. I give him a lot of credit for his candid interview style with his editors. It made the book a lot more interesting to read.

Best Introduction to Animal Spirits in Animism and Shamanism

This lovely little book should never be allowed to go out of print. It is one of the first two books I recommend to anyone who is interested in animism and shamanism. This book does more than convey important information--though it does that well--it conveys a sense of understanding.

Archeologist Nicholas J. Saunders seems to truly know the animist/shamanist worldview. His books are concise, well researched, beautifully (and appropriately) illustrated, and easy to read and understand.

I also recommend his book Cult of the Cat (Art and Imagination Series), which goes more deeply into the amazing beliefs and spiritual practices centering on cats (from jaguars to house cats) from the dawn of time to today.

Saunders's books are so full of amazing information that you will want to reread them time and again, and they are so beautifully written that you will reread them.

Read this book to understand how our ancestors thought and felt about animals and why they revered them, and to understand the origins of how we feel about animals today.

I have 8 nieces and nephews, ranging in age from 1 to 12, and bought a few of these books for them as a gift. THEY LOVED IT!
The younger ones loved all the colorful pictures and drawings, and the opportunity in the back of the book to "Draw their own Dream", and the older children loved the adventure and excitement as the journey unfolded. It made for great nighttime reading with the children for several nights in a row during my visit, and will be a keepsake amongst their collection. Fantastic!

Excellent book on basic pharmaceutical knowledge
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-29
I really found this book to be helpful for my pharmaceutics class. It provides detailed information on how pharmaceuticals are made. I plan to use it when I study for the Pharmacy Board exam upon graduation. The key thing to remember is that it contains BASIC knowledge about how drugs are manufactured.

Warning: The professor and the student must be careful to supplement this book with additional reading material if the physics and chemistry behind drug production are covered in-depth during the pharmaceutics class.

Delbanco is a master! Every word carefully chosen, every phrase artfully assembled. His ability to evoke an image, thought, sensation is remarkable. This little book is not just about travel to foreign lands, scribbling, and sickness; but about the very personal self-discovery such activities could engender.

very highly recommended
