I have been required to read 3 books on mentoring for one of my classes and then was required to review and report on another. I examined 5 additional books on mentoring and coaching and this was by far the most complete and readable - in fact, it was the only one that was enjoyable. Mr. Nigro's sense of humor is only outdone by his understanding of how humans operate and his ability to easily explain what so many other authors must fall asleep writing about - how managers can effectively coach and mentor their staff. I highly recommend The Everything Coaching and Mentoring Book.

This is a great book on Coaching and Mentoring. It covers a lot of ground on what it takes to manage as a coach in today's corporate milieu. The author displays a keen grasp of the material, along with a good sense of humor, from cover to cover. The examples and case studies in the text always hit their marks. I recommend this book for all coaches and mentors, and all would-be coaches and mentors, too. It's a very thorough introduction to the managing wave of the future. And it's written in a style that is never dull, which is the bane of so many other books on this subject matter.

It is with pleasure and gratitude that I've read Dr. Johnstone's book. I have read through and own an exhaustive library of personal growth and self-help books. However, after reading "Find Your Power," I realize that it is the only book of guidance I will need or use from here on out. This book feels like an ongoing conversation with a trusted, wise friend who easily, gently and skillfully presents the prospect of making changes in one's life so possible and exciting, that it engages the reader in a call to immediate action. This scholarly work is offered in a readable format so that anyone would find useful information throughout. The content is laid out in a logical and appealing format, with small chunks of wisdom leading the reader through a change process that is de-mystified and easy to follow. The visual format of the book creates a convenient reference so that important points and exercises are easy to find and refer back to. Dr. Johnstone's thoughts about power and change represent some major shifts in thinking and could spread health across the planet like wildfire. This book is a must read! I know that my copy is already becoming dog-eared from daily use!

I recommend this book to everyone who feels stuck in a rut and wants to be inspired to move on with life and become more effective, fulfilled and happier. The positive psychology Chris Johnstone uses makes it very easy to follow the exercises in each chapter. The focus is on how to find your personal power to change your life - whether personal or professional or tackle international issues. I am an avid reader of self-help books as evidenced by my huge personal library. Indeed my teenage children are surprised if they hear about a self-help book that I have not read. I read Chris Johnstone's book over the weeked and could not put it down. This book will be my guide in the future and be at the top of my gift list.

Maybe it's because my dad was an old world eccentric, or maybe it's because I love vivid writing and word play, but I loved this affectionate, wide open wild ride of a memoir of Dawidoff"s resilient grandfather. This book is deserving of all the awards it got and merits a wider readership.

A biography as magnificent and entertaining as its subject: Alexander Gerschenkron, a Russian Jewish immigrant, who became a world champion chess player, a linguist (fluent in over two dozen languages, both ancient and modern), an economist (his theories still un-refuted today), and a Harvard intellectual. The author is Gerschenkron's grandson, and the entire book feels warm and loving, but for me the most memorable part comes from the story of Gerschenkron's reaction to the student riots in the late 1960's at Harvard. Gerschenkron's reply to this disorder is unforgettable because he had witnessed first hand the chaos and the thuggery of both the Bolsheviks and of Nazism. He barely escaped from each. His speech is the one and only time he ever mentioned these parts of his life. Delivered to the entire Harvard University and Cambridge community, his words of quiet dignity will surprise you, challenge your assumptions, make you see our country anew, and hold you rapt just as they gripped the entire town that day when everything stopped as citizens gathered around their radios to listen to this great man.

The authors of the chapters are foundational fathers and Pastors that share the Truth of God's Word through personal experience. Everything is well supported by scripture and can be easily read by scholars and lay people alike. We've had great success using it in our Pastor's Bible study class during the week, and we've opened a Sunday morning class that has been very responsive to the teaching.
- you can pay alot more for resources that are not as informative and difficult to grasp. It's a great Buy!

In construction every structure must begin with a good foundation in order to support its weight to the underlying ground. A foundation must begin deep within the ground in order to stabilize the structure and ensure security through all circumstances. Without a good foundation a building will not be able to bear its own weight and will crumble to the ground. Likewise Christians must construct a firm foundation of faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. This foundation will make it possible to withstand opposition and grow in all the difficult circumstances of life. This book does an excellent job constructing such a foundation in the believer.

The men on the spot

Review Date: 2001-09-03
This must be the ultimate in fly on the wall literature. This well illustated book recounts in excellent journalistic style how reuter's correspondents visited hotspots and met hotshots over the last sixty years. The composition of the book gives the reader the feeling of "being there" and you can relive the tension of many of the situations and empathise with the man on the spot who had to contend with such traumas as hearing someone being clubbed to death outside his prison cell in an unstable African state.
Also the charismatic atmosphere surrounding some of the big names that the reporters met comes through the text to the reader, from Elvis Presley to Margaret Thatcher and many more, the great and the not so good are there.
One surprise was to discover that Derek Jameson began his career by landing a job as a messenger boy at Reuters and subsequently impressed his superior so much that he was made a trainee reporter, which eventually launched him on his future path as a journalist and broadcaster.
Having finished reading this excellent work I would commend the reader to place it on the bookshelf with other historical works for future generations to refer to.

Reuters Foreign Correspondents Tell How They Got the Story

Review Date: 2001-07-16
Frontlines will appear to many to be a book of photography, and the book certain does contain several dozen fine images of world-significant events since 1944. However, the bulk of this intriguing volume tells the story behind the story by 40 on-the-scenes correspondents for Reuters who broke the news. In most cases, these essays will provide new details to you that will put much of recent history into a different perspective.

"Where the action is, Reuters is always there . . . ." You will be impressed by the derring-do of the correspondents here. For example, Doon Campbell was born with one arm. Despite that, he came in on an LST with the first wave of Royal Marines on D-Day, and crossed the Rhine with the first gliders (being considered unable to parachute by the authorities).

Although the book covers a tremendous number of world-shaking events (D-Day, the bombing of Hiroshima, the first landings over the Rhine, the Six Day War, building and tearing down of the Berlin Wall, the Iranian Revolution, OPEC's price increases and the Arab Oil Embargo, and space feats), it also covers many many areas of mass culture (Elvis in Germany, over the hill celebrities in Hollywood, and the Thrilla in Manila).

To me, the most interesting essays were the ones that covered getting the story in Communist countries. Usually, the local laws had to be broken to get the story, broken again to get the story out, and then the correspondent had to deal with the angry officials afterwards. You will be moved by the many times that these reporters faced long-term sentences in prison or even execution for covering important stories. One of the most interesting stories is by thriller writer Frederick Forsyth who recalls getting a story about an American bomber shot down in East Germany after World War II. His tale of getting the story and getting out seems just like one of his novels, and you will read those novels differently in the future realizing that he has been there and done that.

The book also has a lot of humor, such as the description of the failed American test of a "space loo" which was wired the wrong way and ejected the material involved instead of sucking it in. One of the funniest was the story of accidentally stepping on Chairman Mao's toes.

If you are a news junkie, journalist, or just someone who likes to know the behind-the-scenes detail, this book will be a favorite in your library for many years to come.

After you finish enjoying the book, I suggest that you take events that most interest you and find the latest books on them. In that way, you can combine perspectives to get a better flavor of what interests you.

Look carefully to see the art and courage behind the bare bones design!

A Fantastic Introduction to Virology
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-25
Fundamentals of Molecular Virology is by far one of the most readable scientific textbooks I have ever come across. The focus is on common characteristics of virus families rather than on individuals. For example, rather than having a chapter just covering the rabies virus this book has a chapter on the Rhabdovirus family and covers the mechanisms that each of the commonly studied rhabdoviruses use for each of the viral life cycle stages.

The book is also organized into orders, each of the viral orders will have their families grouped together. The rhabdovirus chapter is right next to the paramyxoviridae and filoviridae viruses to make up the mononegavirales order.

The writing is clear and concise. The style of writing is geared towards an audience with no previous virology experience and gently guides the reader through the basics of virology. Some attention is given to laboratory procedure but the book was not written as a lab manual and so it only provides a brief overview of some of the common techniques.

The biggest weakness of the book is in graphic illustration. Many of the illustrations are bland and monochromatic - there is very little use of color for a textbook this expensive.

If you are taking a virology or microbiology course I would strongly recommend that you get a copy of this book as a reference regardless of what textbook your instructor uses.
