Gives an interesting viewpoint of some of the famous, and not so famous, stories from the Civil War.

Some of the facts are more tedious than interesting

Review Date: 2007-06-28
While some of the stories about the personalities and events of the American Civil War found in this book are interesting, I found many of them tedious and repetitive. There is a section about people, including U. S. Grant, who changed their names during the course of their lives. Since many people do that in any period of human history, those facts were not in any way significant to the conduct of the war. Other facts concerned which Confederate commander was the last to surrender, commanders on both sides demanding a ransom from a town to save it from being plundered and mundane financial matters such as inflated prices.
As histories of the civil war go, this one does not relate events that satisfy the cover claim of being bizarre. Most fell into the category of events that one would expect in a war between two factions of the same country.

Interesting and Captivating

I have three of Garrison's books: The Amazing Civil War, Civil War Curiosities, and More Civil War Curiosities. I would recommend each and every book to anyone! The facts that Garrison writes about are both interesting and captivating and being a high school American History teacher, I plan on using the facts that I have found no where else to captivate my students and give them a perspective on the war that they may have never found otherwise

Even more Curiosities!

The unusual and the bizzare are the continual trademarks of this work. The stories are lively, interesting and even thought provoking.

The work takes you outside the realm of modern textbooks to give you the inside scoop of the Civil War. A truly fascinating read!

I originally bought this book only because of my infatuation with the whole Jim & Tammy/PTL/Heritage USA saga. Being a devoted supporter of the Bakkers, I was somewhat skeptical of "Jim's new wife". However, I must confess that I now have great respect for Lori. Her story is thoughtful and moving and really shows just how powerful the forgiveness and love of Jesus Christ is. Her ministry to post-abortion sufferers is so deperately needed in today's society. She is a woman of great faith and courage and a true inspiration to all who love Christ above all else. This book should be read by all priests and ministers who will ultimately deal with this kind of emotional pain in their ministries.

This book is a must read for any woman who has suffered through a bad marriage, bad men, phyiscal abuse, or had an abortion. Lori offers a rare insight into the pain so many women live with --with some real answers. The book has it all -- it is at times funny, other times heart-breaking, inspiring, and down to earth. Its an easy read ...but leaves the reader with much to consider.

I received this book for my 40th birthday. Like Devon, I am a dog lover. The stories she tells are of an animal-lover par excellence! I started reading the stories, with one of my three dogs in my lap, and begin sniffling, then sobbing. I wanted to go out and save every anmial! The spiritual ties are real; I, too, have experienced God's unconditional love from my furry angels. Thank you, Devon! I look forward to volume 2.

I just love dogs and I have a special place in my heart for all animals. This book really touched me. I'm really glad there is someone like Devon who takes care of these pets who need homes.
I too, was chosen by my sweet little Zoe, she acutally came into a steel warehouse and one of the guys brought her to the office where i worked, I instantly fell in love, she was so skinny and dirty. Now, she is healthy and happy! not to mention spoiled. We love her and my old cat even loves her too!

*The story of Darlene was sooo sweet! I hope she is somewhere taking care of someone and getting all the love she deserves !

WOW!!!!! What a WONDERFUL book!!!!!!

God put animals on this earth for us to love, cherish, and to keep safe. What a wonderful collection of stories!!! You'll laugh over one story, then cry over the next!!! I'm not a cat-lover; but this book makes me want to learn more about this creature!!!! Devon writes about her "angels"; but, it seems to me Devon herself is an angel who has shared her heart as well as her stories. I only hope more stories will follow!!!
Way to go, Devon!!!!!

This beautifully illustrated book set in Australia's outback has the most interesting animals I've ever seen! The multicultural theme can be used in classrooms and at home to promote an understanding of native animals of Australia, relationships with elders, women of independence, and travel. The story is beautifully written in prose and the illustrations are patterned in pencil/charcoal and brilliant pictures.

My kids really enjoy this book. It was a gift from Grandma for my oldest son because he likes to say funny words. This book is full of funny words and names that all three of our kids love. At the end of the book, my daughter always wants to know "what happend to Grandma", so we come up with all kinds of possibilities. This is a wonderful book and is read often as our bedtime routine.

My Grandma lived in Gooligulch,
Near Bandywallop East,
A fair way north of Murrumbum
(Five hundred miles at least)...

In Sydney and in Melbourne Town,
They all knew Grandma's name,
And all about the animals,
That Grandma used to tame.

THe Australian place names and the premise of the Grandma taming exotic animals (exotic to most non-Australians kids) is as colorful as Grame Base's 11 2-page spreads. The story concerns Grandma (while we're told that everyone "knew her name," we're never told what it is), her taming, training, and befriending of wombats, kangaroos, dingos, goannas and local birds, including kookaburras, galahs, magpies, and coots. The color pictures are beautiful and often wonderfully improbable: A goanna (some kind of reptile) is shown in an easy cair, quaffing some type of drink (Foster's?), while he and a dingo (wild dog) watch a rat balance an Australian coin.

After introducing the animals who overrun Grandma's house, Base's brief plot concerns Grandma's journey (via pelican) over the desert sands and mountins, "until at dusk they reached a place, Where giant tree-ferns grew. There's a lush picture of this riverbank oasis, followed by a dark, fun/scary night illustration of the wombats--their eyes open in fear--"looking nervously around...for a wombat-eating snake." Grandma and pelican journey to next to the sea, where she dons "frilly bathing gear," and rides the waves on a blowup sea-dragon.

HOwever, things take an unexpected turn when Base decides that Grandma will be taken by the tide: "ANnd no-one's seen my Grandma/Even to this very day." This sudden disappearance is tempered by the narrator's speculation that Grandma probably landed on an island and thence to England , Spain, San Francisco, or Tingoor, or (her best bet), that Grandma's "back in Gooligulch, just like before." While the fantasy elements of the book make Grandma's fate less important, and the narrator's speculation more plausible, this turn of events may make the book somewhat unsettling for toddlers, restricting the book's audience to those around the ages 4-9 or so. You'll have to use your judgement. There's no hint that Grandma had a disaster, she pictured (in the narrator's fantasy taming animals "in thejungles of Tingoor" an d heading to San Francisco "On a Western Union train." Still, you might want to consider whrther the ambiguity of what happened to Grandma will be upsetting to your readers. Still, in keeping with the light, silly narrative poem (which is very imaginative and well-written), I think a zanier, more explicit conclusion would have been a better fit.

The other non-color picture are a monochromatic dark brown, made interesting by Base's lined shadings. Unfortunately, these are sometimes too dense, his most effective picture leave more "white space." In addition, Base introduces some of the animals without a nearby reference illustration: You have to go to the inside of the front cover to get the key to the two-page illustration of all the animals located inside the back cover! This is a little inconvenient. Overall, a very good book, with excellent color illustrations, and a clever poetic narrative that will draw engage individuals kids or in group reading.

Wally McDoogle gets into one scrape after another, always causing catastrophe after catastrophe. Now, he's been tricked into switching roles with one of his best friends, a girl named Wall Street. Unfortunately, during that period, a major football game takes place and the ballet "The Nutcracker" opens. Wally has to play Wall Street's part as the Sugar Plum Fairy, while Wall Street has to take his place in the football game.

Of course, numerous other major catastrophes occur as well, during those 72 hours.

One thing kept occurring to me. No matter what his sex is, if one is thrown into ballet or any other activity he is unfamiliar with, he will face a much harder time than someone who has practiced it for a long time. So if a boy doing ballet and a girl playing football switched places, they would both find it a lot harder.

There was a story in the story, a story Wally was writing about a superhero. I liked how Wally's superhero sometimes took on a life of its own, talking back to Wally and not doing what Wally wanted. I hear that real writers have that experience all the time.

In reading the well-known, oft-repeated dialog "Is too." "Is not." et al., I was reminded of the March of the Peers in "Iolanthe" by Gilbert and Sullivan. One faction of the peers (the tenors) shouted "Tan-tan-ta-ra!" while the other faction (the basses) countered with "Tsing boom!"

I read this book for the first and second times last night.

It was my second time, because I had read the book when first published. But because I lived in Hawaii back then, perhaps I could not fully absorb the stunning setting and the author's many insights about island life.

I lived in Hawaii for 25 years, and in my second reading Ms. Nelson captured and returned me to 1970s Hawaii. At the same time, I learned a great deal from her book that I did not discern during my time in Hawaii.

The book is about much more than Hawaii. Anyone who has ever been young will identify with this memoir, and will come away richer for the author's uncanny powers of observation about universal themes.

A great book that captures the feel of Hawaii. Victoria's Hawaii is gone but the 'feel' of the place is timeless. Her description of Hawaiian music, plate lunches and hundreds of other details of island life are right on target. If you've been captivated by the idea of island life...read this book. You'll be on the beach, breathing in plumerias as long as your eyes cross the words.

I was introduced to this book by a writer who had lived in Hawaii for most of the '70s, and she felt that it was one of the best personal memoirs of living in Hawaii that she had read. Nelson taught at the University of Hawaii in the '70s, and traveled throughout the islands. She captures the beauty, the sadness, the cultural tensions and improbable harmonies of a people and a setting that is so much more than a Waikiki Beach tourist-trap destination. Her description of the people of Moloka'i was one my motivations to find the true meaning of **Aloha** and visit what may be the friendliest place in Hawai'i. St. Martin's should at least bring it back in trade paperback - the travel sections of most bookstores are dying for a distinctly different look at one of the most fascinating and spiritual places in the world

Do you want to read the Bible but think you don't have time with your busy schedules? We have read this Bible for several years and each year I think maybe we should read a different one but we always come back to this one. As a couple, we find the message for each day and the mix of Old Testament, New Testament, Proverbs and Psalms an easy way to kick off our day. With a fresh brewed cup of coffee and a dose of age old wisdom, it sets the tone for our whole day. Reading the Bible together and praying together in the mornings before work has changed our marriage. Try reading it with your spouse and hang on for the adventure of a lifetime. The prayer is important too! We are buying 2 more copies for friends and a new hardbound one for us. The old has been used so much it is falling apart! Each time we read it, we learn something new about our situation or relationship.

I found a paperback version on sale at a christian bookstore. It was their only and last copy. So I snatched it up. I am very fond of the New King James Version and I love reading it everyday. Each section offers a bit from the O.T. as well as the N.T. Over a year one should have been through the whole Bible. I am still in the process of reading and am very eager to discover a balanced view of who Yaweh and Y'shua really are. Reading Oswald Chamber's viewpoints are inspiring as well. That man obviously loved the Lord with all his heart, soul, mind and strength. I would very much like to find a hardcover version.

This makes reading the entire Bible attainable & fun.

This is the greatest version I've come across yet. It is easy to do every day, it didn't bog me down in the legalistics of the Old Testament as I always felt when I was just reading the Bible through, and the words of Oswald Chambers are always so meaningful. It is such a blessing!

If you want to get a lot of meaning out of your Bible or just want a devotional book to do each day that only takes about 1/2 hr per day, this book is for you, and the paperback is easy to carry with you.

I have never written a review before but I was compelled to after reading this book. I believe every parent should get this book in the hands of all young people. This book allows one to think about nature in a way that is not normally presented in the classroom while guiding teenagers through some biblical based character training in a non-preaching style. I like the Ants and the Work Ethic chapter because it talks about what God says about work and the scripture Proverbs 6:6-8 is an example. I also liked Patience of a Glacier as stated in James 1:2-4. This book will cause you to look at the world differently and even appreciate the role spiders play with all their creativity. The chapter of Spiders and Creativity caused me to discover that each one of God's creatures, including man, has talents and we should discover them and be true to our heart's passions and talents. This is a book that can be read a chapter at a time and it could be used as a lesson per week for a preacher or a Sunday school teacher. I could see this book being used in the Boy and Girl Scouts, as a home schooling book or a summer Christian camp guide. Everyone, both young and old, could learn from this book. Thank you for a great book author Dennis Slone!

This book changed the way I looked at the World around me. There are fourteen character lessons that can be learned by observing nature. I learned that God reaveals Himself through nature as stated in Romans 1:20. It's hard for me to narrow my favorite chapter but Horses Like to Run comes to mind. I learned the value of exercise in leading a healthy and active life. The story is told from a modern-day Huck Finn spin with the Bible incorporated. This book serves ages ten through adults, but could be read to a younger child for character development.

I am home schooled and I love this book. It made me look at nature differently and how God wants us to learn from his creation. I think everybody could benefit from this book because the world more than ever before certainly needs character training. My favorite chapter was Family Life of the Honey Bees. That chapter taught me the importance of working together as a family for the benefit of the whole. My second favorite chapter was Dogs and Loyalty. I discovered the role loyalty has in relationships with others. I highly recommend this book for both teenagers and adults.
