Earth Day Founder Recommends State of Environment SpeechReview Date: 2003-02-21
Beyond Earth DayReview Date: 2003-02-28
Any one who can read should read this book!!Review Date: 2003-04-29
I can only hope that this book makes it to the top 10 best sellers list, so that it gets read by a large segment of the population. It's a vary important message and it's easy to read in a short amount of time, and once you read it it would be wise to give it to a friend and have them read it and pass it on to someone else.
Why can't an American president stand up, and run on smaller population and less consumption? Humans will gain less and less with over-population.
Earth Day Founder Recommends State of Environment SpeechReview Date: 2003-02-21
The book provides a strong case that more dire consequences are up ahead for all of us, unless the current political leadership in Washington abandons its "business as usual" mentality regarding the environment and begins to recognize the urgency and gravity of the situation we are getting into with regard to air, water, land and climate.
"It is time for the president and Congress to reach an agreement that sustainability is the challenge of our time and design a plan of action for the future... There is no room, nor time, for partisanship. The president and Congress should face this issue in a unified and cooperative way and should persist until we reach the goal", laments Nelson.
Nelson recommends that the president of the United States deliver a "State of the Environment" speech to the American public and the world which outlines environmental challenges meriting the nation and the world's immediate attention, and the challenges that lay on the horizon. Such an address, Nelson says, is what is needed "to start public dialogue on the serious environmental problems facing the country and world today". People everywhere need to realize that maintaining the environmental sustainability of the planet is the most important responsibility we all have, because all life on Earth is interrelated, and because our economy is inherently dependent on the environment's "underlying resource base of forests, water, air, soil, and minerals".

Wonderful introduction to the BibleReview Date: 2008-04-01
One caveat: As always, everything in its pages should be compared to the Bible to determine if it's true. In particular, I noticed that he ignores some key verses in Revelation (1:1, 22:10, etc.) that would seem to contradict his millenial, far-future interpretation of that book.
All in all, a superb overview of the Bible, especially for new students.

I would particularly recommend this book as a guideline to prioritizing issues of biblical importance in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles. Gaining an understanding of the material written in this book with help you avoid many of the doctrinal pitfalls others have fallen prey to.

The story that Amy Grant writes to accompany the song is heart-wrenching. It's a modern-day version of the song. This song will bring comfort to anyone going through trials. This is an especially great gift fot expecting mothers.
I highly recommend this CD/book to all customers. It also makes a very nice and unique gift. It's for both the music lover and book lover.

Good for All AgesReview Date: 2008-07-01
I know that Harper Collins classifies this novel as a children's book, but I most definitely think it should be part of the young adult genre. This coming-of-age story was extremely unique, and I loved how many cultural aspects of Amazonian tribes (even if they were partially made-up) were integrated into the story. I really loved how nature was such a big part of the story. Both Luka's and Tirio's struggles were very realistic, especially each boy's yearnings to know his father. And I was very shocked by Luka and Tirio's connection, but pleased with how the ending tied up all the loose ends.
I thoroughly enjoyed N.A. Nelson's debut novel and recommend it to all readers.

One boy, Tirio, now resides in America after being banned from his family and tribe for a birth defect that causes him to limp. As his birthday is approaching, however, his sixth sense picks up on signs that point him back to the Amazon and his tribe. He's going to take his test and prove himself a man - and prove his father wrong in the process.
The other boy, Luka, is going through rigorous training so that he'll make it out of the Amazon alive. All of his senses are working beyond perfect, and he seems to be on the direct path to success. That is, until tragedy strikes.
BRINGING THE BOY HOME is refreshing, well put-together, and completely original. The continuous suspense resulted in a fast, easy read, making it a book I'd recommend to reluctant readers as well as avid ones. The plot blended realism with fiction and fantasy, opening itself to all types of book lovers.

Road Trip Across the USA.Review Date: 2003-05-26
But don't get the wrong impression. Bruce and Stan aren't serious philosophers on an epic quest. No, they are basically just two normal Christian men with a great gift of comedy. The book is full of more humorous insights than serious ones and it is clear that these two gentlemen know life is a comedy and not a tragedy.
SEARCH FOR THE MEANING OF LIFE is entertaining, full of insights, and easy to read. It also has lots of quirky little facts about the various places they visited. It's part travel book, part philosophy treatise, part humor book. Combined together it makes for one highly enjoyable read.

very hilariousReview Date: 2004-02-16
It's about Alfie Mason, who lives with his topsy-turvy family. His mother is somewhat drunk and his grandfather, who has a point but never shuts up, and his sister, Alma. He spends every minute he can get drawing cartoons in the attic. But when his spoiled brother, Bubba, comes back to live with them, he has to sleep in the attic. Alfie decides to keep his beloved attic to himself, by shutting himself up in there. His family tries to get him out, but it is no use. He even skips school to stay in there. But I can't tell anymore, or I'd spoil it.
The CartoonistReview Date: 2007-04-20
Alfie isn't just the youngest in his family, he is also the least. His mother loves her oldest son, Bubba, almost to the exclusion of her other two children. His grandfather, who also lives with them, rails against the government and has begun to feel useless, a feeling Alfie's mother reinforces often. Alma, Alfie's sister, is really the only adult in the house and through the book she slowly becomes vocal about Alfie's, and her own, dislike of their older brother, Bubba.
Alfie's family has moved many times, but this time they're in a house with an attic and Alfie has laid claim to it as his own retreat. Alma understands, but no one else seems to. Upstairs, Alfie draws cartoons, which he believes are works of art. Other things take a backseat to his interest in drawing, even school. His drawing and the attic are the most important things to him, so when Alma tells him that Bubba will be moving home, and bringing his wife, and that the couple will be living in the attic, the single thing Alfie has to call his own is threatened. His art isn't impressing people the way he thought it would, and now Bubba's going to take away Alfie's private space unless Alfie can find a way to stop him!
It's interesting that Alfie chooses humorous cartoons as his outlet, when throughout the book, he feels badly about himself that, unlike Bubba, he cannot make his mother laugh - worse, the only time he HAS made her laugh was by telling her a story about Bubba, but Alfie doesn't seem to realize that. Other than Alma, Alfie lives amongst people who don't seem capable of thinking of anyone but themselves. This Byars book is well worth reading, as usual. Richard Cuffari's illustrations are few but perfect.
Wonderful Children's BookReview Date: 2000-10-12
Alfie lives with his mother, grandfather and sister. Alfie's only interest in life is to draw cartoons. He draws at night, at school and any other time he can manage to sneak away. In the evening, he climbs up to the attic and closes the world of his loud abusive obnoxious mother behind so he can draw and dream about a better life.
Betsy Byars does a wonderful job of realistically portraying a grim world with an alcoholic mother and grandfather who do nothing but argue and watch television without beating the reader over the head with the harshness of it all. I felt real hope in Alfie as he tried to control his little world and keep it out of the hands of the irritating mother who fails to understand his artistic interests.
