Earth Day Founder Recommends State of Environment Speech
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-21
Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson holds no punches in this book. He brings the question of the ability of the planet to sustain today's consumption-driven American lifestyle into clear focus in "Beyond Earth Day". His report card on the planet is dire but believable.

The book provides a strong case that more dire consequences are up ahead for all of us, unless the current political leadership in Washington abandons its "business as usual" mentality regarding the environment and begins to recognize the urgency and gravity of the situation we are getting into with regard to air, water, land and climate.

"It is time for the president and Congress to reach an agreement that sustainability is the challenge of our time and design a plan of action for the future... There is no room, nor time, for partisanship. The president and Congress should face this issue in a unified and cooperative way and should persist until we reach the goal", laments Nelson.

Nelson recommends that the president of the United States deliver a "State of the Environment" speech to the American public and the world which outlines environmental challenges meriting the nation and the world's immediate attention, and the challenges that lay on the horizon. Such an address, Nelson says, is what is needed "to start public dialogue on the serious environmental problems facing the country and world today". People everywhere need to realize that maintaining the environmental sustainability of the planet is the most important responsibility we all have, because all life on Earth is interrelated, and because our economy is inherently dependent on the environment's "underlying resource base of forests, water, air, soil, and minerals".

"Beyond Earth Day" gives an amazingly thorough look at the state of our planet, then and now. Discussions of issues are well-referenced and Gaylord Nelson courageously presents honest solutions to problems that many people take pains to ignore. He offers history, wisdom, and guidance in an age when "environment" is an important issue to Americans, yet many are unaware of the seriousness of the issues our water, air, soils and biodiversity face. An America united by the knowledge offered by Senator Nelson has the capability to change the course of catastrophic events involving the very elements needed for life. Share the intelligence of this important book with everyone you know.

Any one who can read should read this book!!

This book covers what should be the most important Issue to all people in the human-rat race. It's an attempt to make people realize how fast we are using up our natural resourses.
I can only hope that this book makes it to the top 10 best sellers list, so that it gets read by a large segment of the population. It's a vary important message and it's easy to read in a short amount of time, and once you read it it would be wise to give it to a friend and have them read it and pass it on to someone else.
Why can't an American president stand up, and run on smaller population and less consumption? Humans will gain less and less with over-population.

I found this book for $5.00 in Family Dollar today. So far, I have really enjoyed reading it. I can't put it down. It explains the Bible so simply that almost anyone should be able to understand it. It provides that background knowledge of the Bible that most of us may not get by reading the Bible on our own. I highly recommend it for those who want to understand the Bible better.

This is an excellent introduction to the Bible - by far the best I've seen. It manages to be both simple and fairly comprehensive and should serve its reader well as a companion to the Scriptures.

One caveat: As always, everything in its pages should be compared to the Bible to determine if it's true. In particular, I noticed that he ignores some key verses in Revelation (1:1, 22:10, etc.) that would seem to contradict his millenial, far-future interpretation of that book.

All in all, a superb overview of the Bible, especially for new students.

Awesome way to study the Bible!

I have the original version of this book (God's word for the Biblically Inept) I use it all the time when I read the Bible. I recently bought it for some friends who want it for personal use as well as for teaching the teens in our church. It's a fun approach to the Bible

Sound Theology Made Simple

This timeless classic simplifies the most important foundational teachings of biblical Christianity. Although this book was adopted as the official doctrinal book of the Assemblies of God, it would also be useful to all Christians who believe the Word of God to be the final authority on all teaching, and is unchanging in its application to the reader's life.

I would particularly recommend this book as a guideline to prioritizing issues of biblical importance in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles. Gaining an understanding of the material written in this book with help you avoid many of the doctrinal pitfalls others have fallen prey to.

This book by P. C. Nelson is excellent for Sunday School. We teach this to our New Comers and New Converts Class. It's a great way to teach or re-teach the fundamental truths in which we believe. Since many of our congregations' members go from conversion to Sunday School teachers in such a short period of time, this is a must read, must teach kind of book!!

The author was one "ten most intelligent men of the USA" during his lifetime. He was a Bilbe and language scholar speaking more than twenty-five languages. He was president of a Bible College. He presents sixteen doctrines essential to the Christian faith and Pentecostals in a clear concise manner using Scripture as his support and explaining his conclusions.

These sixteen points were adopted as the Tenets of Faith for the Assemblies of God USA which he wrote for the convention in 1914. Any minister in the Assemblies would do well to read and study this book.

A "must read" book for anyone wanting to make their life worth living. Billy Graham's inspirational wisdom is presented in a logical and easily understandable manner. Mr. Graham's insight into man's relationship with God shows us how uncomplicated God really is. Any evidence that society may need as proof that there is a God, or a better way of living life, is in Mr. Graham himself. Billy Graham doesn't just write or talk the words, he lives them. Living by example is the greatest testimony of true faith that a man can give.

Throughout my life, Billy Graham has always been the sensible voice of the Christian faith. This book is a collection of his best writings. The beauty of his writing is in the clear-headed logic and strong references to the Bible. Graham brings the words of the Bible straight into the 21st century, applying the wisdom of the Bible to modern day issues.

I buy this method in Paris a few years ago. And it becomes my companion for many hundreds of hours.
I bought many others naturally beacause I am very interested about Brazilian guitar.
This one is by far the best for me.
The examples are excellent. ( Nelson is excellent ! There are many people that agree to tell it is the best ;-) )
The CD is excellent : when you hear the "riffs", it's fascinating. Music is there.
There also complete songs from Nelson various CD's.

I contact frequently Nelson by mail and I have allways receive a kind response. A very friendly person. A man that has my admiration. A very generous guy ! Thank Nelson.

If you like latin guitar ( here with jazz extensions flavour because Nelson also studied Jazz in US ), you must take a look at this book recommanded by many great guitarists of our time ( Joe Dorio...etc)

I hope that my review help you and I wish you a good accomplishment with music we like.

I had never played brazilian guitar (actually I really hadn't played that much guitar at all) before buying this book. After almost a year of studying and listening, I am really, really satisfied. The examples are brilliant. The CD is done well. The only criticism I have is that some of the really difficult chords need some explanation (like put x finger on y fret) and encouragement (like, Hey this is a really tough chord but hang tough...etc). However, there are good explanations for almost everything which could cause doubt. I really, really love this book. It has changed my life.

First of all, the song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written! I am not exaggerating. The first time I heard it, I cried. Growing up Catholic, this song meant so much but it doesn't matter what denomination you are affiliated with. We all understand the fear and struggle when asked to follow God's plan but we know that he will bring us through. That is what this song is about. It is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written!

The story that Amy Grant writes to accompany the song is heart-wrenching. It's a modern-day version of the song. This song will bring comfort to anyone going through trials. This is an especially great gift fot expecting mothers.

I highly recommend this CD/book to all customers. It also makes a very nice and unique gift. It's for both the music lover and book lover.

I was introduced to the song my senior year of high school when my choir sang it for the yearly High School Christmas concert. The teacher spent a class prior to the concert explaining the meaning of the song. I, and many others, were humbled when we discovered the power of the message that we were conveying. On the night of the concert it took all my skill as a singer not to cry as I sang the song. Just this last christmas I recieved the book and CD from my grandma. Even though I recieved several great gifts, it was this book and CD that touched me the deepest. The book gave the song a greater depth and meaning, and hearing the song again was a magnificent experience. I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to women. It offers a message of strength and hope in uncertain times.

I got this book at the annual Amy Grant Christmas concert but was very happy when I saw it on Amazon the next day so I could buy it for presents for family and friends. The book tells the story of how Amy came up with the lyrics to one of the most powerful Christmas songs ever written "Breath of Heaven." The song is about Mary and the way she must have felt with all the responsibilty of carrying the savior.

The book itself is very colerful with pictures and verses throughout it. And the best part of the book in My opinion is the Story written about Amy on the reasons behind the lyrics to the song! As an added bonus the Book comes with the Single to the Song the book is about as perfprmed by Amy! A must for any Amy Grant fan or Christmas lovers!

I received this book in the mail and was excited about it because I had not really wanted to spend the money on it, but did want to read it. I have to say I was nearly brought to tears and certainly humbled by the experience of reading Amy's words and listening to her beautiful song in which she pays such a loving and reverent tribute to Mary. I remember Amy saying once at a concert just before she sang the song "Mary was not better than anyone else...she was just willing." I STRONGLY urge you to read this book and then sit and listen to the song while looking at the incredible illustrations.

This is a great book. It can easily go beyond the recommended age of 9 to 12. N.A. Nelson does a great job at describing what is happening with each of the characters' needs and emotions. The setting, while mostly fictional, is completely realistic and it invites curiosity to learn more about what other tribes and rites may exist that we know little or nothing about. Children AND their parents will both enjoy this book.

In the Takunami tribe that lives hidden in the Amazon rainforest, boys are trained from a young age for their soche seche tente, a test all boys of thirteen must pass lest they be banishes from the tribe. Two young boys grow up in completely different worlds. Tirio was cast from the Takunami tribe because of a disability and now lives with his adoptive parent Sara in the United States. But as his thirteenth birthday approaches, he is beginning to feel a deeper connection to his first home in the Amazon. Luka's mother has extensively prepared him for the test he is to undergo when he turns thirteen and refuses to let anything get in the way. Luka is certain he will be able to pass the test, but his mother's plans go awry when his father dies, severing the connection that was supposed to help him during his test of manhood. And somehow, these two boys, Tirio and Luka, are connected in unexpected ways.

I know that Harper Collins classifies this novel as a children's book, but I most definitely think it should be part of the young adult genre. This coming-of-age story was extremely unique, and I loved how many cultural aspects of Amazonian tribes (even if they were partially made-up) were integrated into the story. I really loved how nature was such a big part of the story. Both Luka's and Tirio's struggles were very realistic, especially each boy's yearnings to know his father. And I was very shocked by Luka and Tirio's connection, but pleased with how the ending tied up all the loose ends.

I thoroughly enjoyed N.A. Nelson's debut novel and recommend it to all readers.

BRINGING THE BOY HOME introduces two unique boys as they approach their thirteenth birthdays. As tradition in their Amazon tribe, they must trek through the dangerous jungle as a test of their strength. If they survive after days alone in the Amazon, they will be united with their fathers for the very first time.

One boy, Tirio, now resides in America after being banned from his family and tribe for a birth defect that causes him to limp. As his birthday is approaching, however, his sixth sense picks up on signs that point him back to the Amazon and his tribe. He's going to take his test and prove himself a man - and prove his father wrong in the process.

The other boy, Luka, is going through rigorous training so that he'll make it out of the Amazon alive. All of his senses are working beyond perfect, and he seems to be on the direct path to success. That is, until tragedy strikes.

BRINGING THE BOY HOME is refreshing, well put-together, and completely original. The continuous suspense resulted in a fast, easy read, making it a book I'd recommend to reluctant readers as well as avid ones. The plot blended realism with fiction and fantasy, opening itself to all types of book lovers.

I picked this up and couldn't put it down. Bruce and Stan are two middle aged men who talked their wives into letting them tool around the country on their own for nearly four months. They start in Boston and work their way west. Taking themes from the Old Testament Existentialist in Ecclesiastes, they find his themes echoed in the various cities they visit. I laughed in agreement with most of their discoveries. I preached about and read from some of their book on Sunday morning and three people wanted the book (this is very rare!) I am glad I bought it, read it, and preached some from it! I look forward to reading other books in their series.

Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz are two middle-aged men and best friends who take a road trip across the United States for one purpose, to find out what Americans think the meaning of life is. The duo visited eleven major cities and found that each place had its own theme, its own identity. These themes helped Bruce and Stan decide on particular people they wanted to talk with and provide a framework for which the book is written around.

But don't get the wrong impression. Bruce and Stan aren't serious philosophers on an epic quest. No, they are basically just two normal Christian men with a great gift of comedy. The book is full of more humorous insights than serious ones and it is clear that these two gentlemen know life is a comedy and not a tragedy.

SEARCH FOR THE MEANING OF LIFE is entertaining, full of insights, and easy to read. It also has lots of quirky little facts about the various places they visited. It's part travel book, part philosophy treatise, part humor book. Combined together it makes for one highly enjoyable read.

This book was sooooooooooo funny!
It's about Alfie Mason, who lives with his topsy-turvy family. His mother is somewhat drunk and his grandfather, who has a point but never shuts up, and his sister, Alma. He spends every minute he can get drawing cartoons in the attic. But when his spoiled brother, Bubba, comes back to live with them, he has to sleep in the attic. Alfie decides to keep his beloved attic to himself, by shutting himself up in there. His family tries to get him out, but it is no use. He even skips school to stay in there. But I can't tell anymore, or I'd spoil it.

ISBN 0440410460 - Betsy Byars always does a good job with the various worlds of her young characters, and The Cartoonist is a great, if somewhat disturbing, example.

Alfie isn't just the youngest in his family, he is also the least. His mother loves her oldest son, Bubba, almost to the exclusion of her other two children. His grandfather, who also lives with them, rails against the government and has begun to feel useless, a feeling Alfie's mother reinforces often. Alma, Alfie's sister, is really the only adult in the house and through the book she slowly becomes vocal about Alfie's, and her own, dislike of their older brother, Bubba.

Alfie's family has moved many times, but this time they're in a house with an attic and Alfie has laid claim to it as his own retreat. Alma understands, but no one else seems to. Upstairs, Alfie draws cartoons, which he believes are works of art. Other things take a backseat to his interest in drawing, even school. His drawing and the attic are the most important things to him, so when Alma tells him that Bubba will be moving home, and bringing his wife, and that the couple will be living in the attic, the single thing Alfie has to call his own is threatened. His art isn't impressing people the way he thought it would, and now Bubba's going to take away Alfie's private space unless Alfie can find a way to stop him!

It's interesting that Alfie chooses humorous cartoons as his outlet, when throughout the book, he feels badly about himself that, unlike Bubba, he cannot make his mother laugh - worse, the only time he HAS made her laugh was by telling her a story about Bubba, but Alfie doesn't seem to realize that. Other than Alma, Alfie lives amongst people who don't seem capable of thinking of anyone but themselves. This Byars book is well worth reading, as usual. Richard Cuffari's illustrations are few but perfect.

This is a great example of what children's literature should be about. It tells a lot in a very few pages about how sad a child's life can be when the adults are less responsible than the children. We see Alfie's grim world through his eyes.

Alfie lives with his mother, grandfather and sister. Alfie's only interest in life is to draw cartoons. He draws at night, at school and any other time he can manage to sneak away. In the evening, he climbs up to the attic and closes the world of his loud abusive obnoxious mother behind so he can draw and dream about a better life.

Betsy Byars does a wonderful job of realistically portraying a grim world with an alcoholic mother and grandfather who do nothing but argue and watch television without beating the reader over the head with the harshness of it all. I felt real hope in Alfie as he tried to control his little world and keep it out of the hands of the irritating mother who fails to understand his artistic interests.

This book is Great!

This book is really good. It's about a boy who loves to draw cartoons but his mother doesn't. He stays up in the attic drawing all the time. One day he finds out his older brother, who he dislikes, is moving in with them. Also he will be staying in the attic. Read the book to find out how Alfie defends his attic
