"2000 Questions and Answers About The Civil War" is the revised title of Webb Garrison's paperback "Civil War Trivia and Fact" book. Whereas the paperback was more expensive, "2000 Questions" is now rebound in a plain yet attractive hardbound format with the extremely nice price of $7.99. And the book itself is readily accesible to any Civil War student or buff from High School age to Senior Citizen. The questions range from the common to the unusual. For example: "Where did the September 1864 siege of Fort Gibson take place?" Answer. "Indian Territory". Or. . . "What millionaire soldier-of-fortune who was killed at Chantilly had a tow in New Jersey and two decorations, a medal and a cross named after him?" Answer: "Maj. Gen. Philip Kearney (b. New York)". . .or "When the Civil War Began, what future general tried to answer the call for volunteers but was rejected?" Answer: U.S.Grant. The answers range from brief, one-sentence comments to a paragraph, accompanied throughout the book with excellent line drawings and contemporary photographs. The "latest" in a long line of Webb Garrison Civil War trivia and fact works, "2000 Questions and Answers About the Civil War" should be an indispensible part of any Civil War buff's personal home library alongside Burke Davis' "The Civil War: Strange & Fascinating Facts". These two works actually compliment each other!

I brought this book with me on my family's last vacation because there were hours of driving to do & I'm a Civil War fanatic! Although I've studied the Civil War for over 14 years I learned a lot from this book. And it kept me & my family entertained for hours! It has sections on Union & Confederate generals, battles, civilians, statistics (like anyone could ever know all those!), weapons (my favorite section!), & great chapters on the war in the east, west, south, & at sea. This is a trivia book that's perfect for both the novice & the historian, and it's also low-priced.

Man, I can't imagine a better war than the Civil War. And this is one of the best books on that war. This book is for all those guys who dress up on the weekend and pretend to be real soliders. These kind of guys are the best kind of guys in the world, buffs. These buffs should try playing with real ammo and real war time conditions. As a vietnam vet, I know first hand war is really hell. I have to live with this hell the rest of my life. These buffs should try a real war on for size. Peace out!

The subject of the American Civil War always encompasses an enormous amount of material, as does this great trivia book. For its relatively low price, you get a book containing a great deal of information to any student of the war, and the questions will often stump even the most well read historians.

It's beautiful burgandy and has gold edge also.
And I find this "Word of Christ in Red" very usefull.
Concordance, Color Maps, Index to Maps are enough for

this bible is my favourite bible i own, it's small and easy to carry to church services, it has a flap which closes on the front, a ribbon to find your place, very helpful cross-references and footnotes in the center margin, book, chapter and verse nos. at top of each bible text page, maps at the back, mini concordance, helpful Preface and "How to use this reference Bible" section, words of Christ in red. But, would like to see an extra page or two in the mini concordance, and map dimensions also in metric (maybe one day in a later edition!) And, being all in modern english, makes the Bible easy to understand and read.-

This NKJ Bible is an extraordinary small compact reference Bible. My seven year old son needed a NKJ Bible for his Christian School, and this is perfect for his small fingers. It is also small enough to fit on his school desk, and the words are big enough to read even though this is a compact size Bible. The snap flap gives the Bible an exquisite look for the small price I paid for the Bible. I guarantee I will be buying another one just like this one for my purse and long travels. Thank You for reading the rating on the perfection of this NKJ Bible.

The Complete Guide to Adventures in Odyssey is a great guide to all the episodes, characters and story lines of the Focus on the Family Radio Drama Adventures in Odyssey. It has detailed story lines to every episode, bloppers and facts about the episodes and has early photos of the cast and crew. The only downside was the fact there were not many color pictures in the book. But other then that the book was great.

I imagine some day when my daughter is going through my things when I'm gone, she'll find this book with practically EVERY line underscored in red. I love how scripture is the underlying structure for each story and how the lives of the individual writers validate His word over and over. God's grace, mercy and love are the source of contagious joy! Yippee, skippy -- makes me HAPPY!

Awesome Insight into Iraq War
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-13
This book is told from the first person perspective of a true American hero. It is action packed with gun battles on the streets of Iraq, in-fighting amongst the locals, and the struggle to run a profitable business while staying alive in the most dangerous place on Earth.

Once I started reading, I could not put the book down. Andress provides incredible insight into the challenges that Americans and Iraqis face in the struggle for a free and democratic Iraq. It describes how Americans and Iraqis are risking their lives together in an effort to rebuild a free and safe Iraq.

After reading this book, I have much clearer insight into the Iraq situation. This book should be mandatory reading for all military officers, politicians, and critics, and supporters of the Iraq war.

I have just finished this great book written by a very courageous man that is the very epitome of what Americans used to be; big-hearted can-do men of adventure that seize the day and change the world for the better. It is a gripping account of this former US Army Ranger officer's experience running a logistics and security company in Iraq helping with the building and supply of bases for US and Iraqi forces, and the rebuilding of the Iraqi infrastructure. (He was an officer with the Army Rangers.) He lived outside the "Green Zone" with an ad hoc bunch of special forces guys from US Special Forces to Gurkas and Russian Spetnaz with a supporting cast of Iraqis willing to risk their lives and be real heros while most of the other contractors were hiding behind the US military. I just finished it and I have to say I'm most impressed.

This is a first-hand account of what it is really like over there and not a bunch of second-hand stories from someone hiding in a hotel in the Green Zone, like the other books about Iraq. It is truly a must read for anyone who wants to know what is really going on over there, and the story of the brave men who are building a democratic future for Iraq. See his video on youtube by searching for his name.

A true account of progress in Iraq.

The liberal press has attempted to submarine progress in Iraq, just like it did in Vietnam. The Carter Andress book tells it like it is. Contractor's play a vital role in the security of the key players in fostering Iraqi democracy, and Andress see's the big picture in this book. This is a great read, but not for those lacking the determination to see this thing through.

From the Contractor's Mouth!

Review Date: 2007-09-23
First, I agree with that said by the first Reviewer, especially about Andress' perspective differing from the "2-3 day visits to Iraq" making those people experts! Andress has lived the Iraqi experience. His work and that of his company puts them in a unique position to KNOW how the majority of Iraquis fell about the US. His efforts make it possible for us to make the progress needed to make the Iraqui people self-sufficient.
Only then should we think of leaving this country!

Contrary to the media portrait being painted of Contractors in Iraq, i.e. Blackwater, these men are enabling our "experts" to accomplish their tasks without being killed! Obviously the insurgents will try to kill them at every opportunity! Kill the Guards and the Bad Guys will have their way with the people....and our troops!

For a first-hand look at how Iraquis and Americans are working together read this book!

Fired UP!

Review Date: 2007-08-08
Fired UP! If you ever get the chance to meet Carter Andress he will undoubtedly end his conversation with this phrase. Simply put, the man is "fired up" about life. Contractor Combatant tells the story of his real life account of living and working in the RED ZONE along side his Iraqi brothers (Sunni, Shiite, and Kurds alike) and reflects not only his passion for these people, but his deep desire to help them gain their freedom. Trying to start and run a successful business is challenging enough in a peaceful environment. Doing in the midst of the chaos and confusion that is Iraq presents a unique set of challenges that is not for everyone. It takes leadership, courage and lots of tenacity and determination. His company's success could not have been achieved without a willingness to open his heart and trust to the local people. If you are tired listening to the perspective of people that come into this country, spend two or three days in the Green Zone and return home as a subject matter experts, this book offers an entirely new and refreshing perspective that just might change the way you think about war. Get the story from someone who lived it on the front lines. From exposing fraud in the contracting system to feeding the Iraqi Army during the second battle for Falluja, Carter tells his story with passion, grit and honesty. The book is fast paced, entertaining, and well written. It also offers, in the last chapter, an interesting academic perspective on Iraq and US involvement. After reading it you might just feel "Fired UP" too.

The logical conclusions of this excellent book are about to play completely out. As murder mastermind Markham Duff Smith was strapped to a gurney and rehabilitated several years ago, triggerman Allen Wayne Janecka will now be strapped to a gurney and rehabilitated this coming July 24, 2003. That pretty much takes care of all the players -- except for Walter Waldhauser, who will probably spend the rest of his life in prison for some sort of embezzlement schemes he operated in Dallas, years after the events depicted in this book. Did anyone really think he would ever turn his life around?

The true story of the murders of several generations of a wealthy and seemingly happy family. Not only does a family member scheme to have his family killed for their money, but he gets away with it until the cops and a seasoned investigative reporter team up to solve the crime. This is a book that proves that truth is stranger than fiction. A priest turned forensic psychologist, who begins imitating the medical examiner in dress, the good cop who is losing his family to the pressures of the job, and a group of money-hungry, well dressed criminals willing to kill a whole family, including a sleeping child to get what they want.

The White Pine Cronicles was first introduced to me by my mother. Scince then I have read the Covenant approximately 7 times and the other two following it at least 5 times.

The Covenant follows Jennet Cordell. Jennet leads a harsh life on Roman Havlicks farm until she is sold by her father to repay debt to her uncle. Jennet fears she will never be able to survive under Taits strict and cruel hand until one fateful day when Freeman Havlick saves her. She now believes she is free but she does not know that Freeman has other plans for her.

The Inheritance is the story of young Lark Baritt and Clay Havlick. Lark is an orphan who through a matter of events comes to be the guard of the Havlicks beloved white pines. Clay is now 25 so the Pines belong to him and Lark fears that Veda Thorne is planning to marry Clay so he will give her the pines and her fathers revenge will be complete against the Havlicks who made him suffer so long ago. Lark protects the pines so they will not be lost to the Thornes but in the process fears she is losing her heart to the young Clay Havlick.

The Dream is the last book in this Saga. The Havlick twins suffer horribly from hate. Trent and Emily, and Justin and Prisilla, must all work together to fufill Jennets dream. In the process they must release the hate and find the love they each have hidden in their hearts.

This is the most wonderful series I have ever read and I will undoubtedly read it again.

A wise and well illustrated (by the author) childrens book, that is well known in Europe, and sadly overlooked in the US. Like "The Little Prince", this book has a charm and quality that transends age. It is about a man and a crane. It is about work,life,...the big questions the big answers. Good stuff. Sadly out of print.

An overlooked classic.

'The Crane' is one of the most beatifully written childrens stories of this century. It is a parable that carries many important questions about who we are and how we live. As a teacher of English, I have found this book a remarkable resource and one that really allows for differentiation of learning with children around 11-12. It is a funny, sad and very touching story and I emplore somebody to reprint it, so that more people can access this wonderfull book. Why it isn't more widely known I do not understand.

Reiner Zimnik, a former carpenter, was 26 and student at the Munich Art Academy when he wrote and designed this book in 1956. The illustrations, simple black and white sketches, stayed with me all my life. The most powerful one covers two pages with a few black strokes of sky, a fallen over little shoe, a dazed bird und the scribble: "Da war das Land traurig, und die Erde weinte." (The country was sad. And the earth wept.) As an adult I might say that it's a fable about the Second World War - what was there before and what came after. As child I experienced no other book that would speak to me with such immediatness. Though it wasn't that widespread in Germany I would still say that it's our best children's book till today.

Without a doubt, one of the more entertaining and informative retelling of the Battle of Trafalger. The author put all his talents of a fictional writer and applied it nicely in this well searched and written account of the Trafalger campaign and battle. I am familiar with the author's work on Copenhegan which was also nicely done.

You can probably compared this book with David Howarth's work although Decision at Trafalger provides far more details and more insights into the entire campaign and battle then Howarth. The book read well and even a casual reader can get into the narrative. One of the better books on the subject, belong on a bookshelves of anyone who got an interest in naval warfare during the Napoleonic era.

This book is simply perfect. Not only does it recount the true events surrounding the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Spain, it is an excellent introductory book to the genre. As a fan of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin tales and CS Forester's Hornblower, this new collection of nautical books is a must read.

Dudley Pope's narrative flows smoothly making this one of those books you can't put down until your finished. The nautical terms of the 1790's ~ 1800's are explained to satisfy both the novice and the well read. Whether this is your first Age of Sail book or just another in a long list, this is a must read that you will cherish.

As both a Patric O'Brien fan and a lover of history works, I very much appreciate the novelistic approach that Mr. Pope takes with the book, which adds much character to the writingas well as a flavor of the life and times. Some detail is sacrificed, but the book is easily readible and the account of the ship actions themselves with included diagrams helps make this complex engagement easy to comprehend.

Better that Patrick O-Brien: this is REAL!

This is the best written and best researched treatment of the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson's death that I have ever read -- and I read a LOT of naval history! Most discussions of Trafalgar concentrate on Nelson's slow death on the orlop deck, while the really decisive actions of the battle rage out of view. In this book Pope gives readers a thorough and vivid discussion of exactly what happened between the whole engaging fleets, AFTER Nelson was hit and taken below. The victory was Nelson's, from his strategy and leadership, but many other men on both sides fought to reach that crucial military decision. Dudley Pope brings this to life. If you've ever wondered why Nelson's last order, knowing he was mortally wounded, was for his flag captain to anchor the British fleet, read on! I also highly recommend Pope's other works, including his fictional Lord Ramage series, which gets visibly better from book to book.

Very Entertaining book, no dry history here!

Trafalgar was an amazing, dramatic event. The grandeur of the ships and the legendary characters involved are well described in this book, and you can tell that Dudley Pope was a man who was fascinated with the age of fighting sail. He was also a very good writer and he described it well.
Pope started out by describing the voyage of the HMS Pickle, the 4 gun schooner which carried news of Nelson's victory as well as his death back to England immediately after the battle. This small part of the great story of Trafalgar might be ignored or briefly mentioned by another author, but Pope related it as the dramatic story that it was. He described the heavy weather which battered the tiny, unescorted ship through hostile waters during her 1000 mile voyage home, causing her to leak badly. He described the overland voyage to London by the young Lieutenant Laponetiere, who arrived at the Admiralty, utterly exhausted, late at night to deliver his stunning news to an elderly, overworked clerk. And all this is just the first chapter.
Subsequent chapters describe the British, French and Spanish navies of the time, the strategies of Napoleon and Pitt, Nelson's life and the relationship he had with his Captains, the life of the common sailor, and even the conditions in Cadiz in 1805. Pope's writing is full of color and detail, and this book moves quickly.
Pope managed to describe the action of the battle very clearly with the use of diagrams of the battle as a whole and of individual matchups between opponents. He made the complex action understandable, and described the dramatic death of Nelson without getting bogged down in melodrama.
The aftermath of the battle, as well as it's importance to the Napoleonic wars and the future of the Royal Navy, are insightfully described towards the end of the book.

Although this is not an exhaustive academic study of the Declaration, this is a very useful and informative book. There are many illustrations and other props included that add to the literary content. When I bought this book the intent was to use it as a coffee table book that folks could pick up when they come to visit. It serves that purpose well, but I believe that it could also be an interesting book for an adolescent who is very interested in American history.

A historical thrill

This is an absolutely wonderful book. It makes the summer of 1776 come alive in ways few books can achieve. The attached replicas of key documents (including a full-size copy of the Declaration) are sure to draw readers, teachers, students, librarians...and anyone with even the remotest curiosity about what is arguably the most important document from our country's founding. This one is a treasure!

Museum in a book indeed! And it's not just for the youth either. The fact is our history is lost to most Americans, especially when it comes to the Colonial/Revolutionary War era of our nation. This book - The Declaration of Independence: The Story Behind America's Founding Document and the Men Who Created It - can change that. In my opinion, it should be in every American school, in every American library, and in every American home. It should be required reading for every public school child and immigrant. Of course, that would never happen - the ACLU wouldn't allow such a dastardly thing - imagine forcing school children and American-wannabe's to learn about what made this country great - and it IS great. The greatest, in fact, even with its faults.
What our fore-fathers did was something that one would never see today - people willing to give one's life, to possibly suffer in a torcherous prison - by signing a document to ensure a free and independent country where one would not have to be controlled by a tyrant. Where a peanut farmer, an actor, or a backwoods lawyer could become the President. And this book gives not only wonderful written descriptions on how that all came about, but allows the reader to experience, through replicas of original documents that one can actually hold and read as if grasping the original (including a draft of the Declaration) writings that made the formation of our great United States.
By the way, there is no political correctness in this book - just pure factual American history - so if your are looking for the anti-European revisionist history books mandated by the liberal left, this one isn't for you.

Absolutly Astounding for Young Learners

This book I just purchased a week ago and it has served me well. I am a graduate of 8th grade and I know that this book would be useful in so many branches of school work such as oral presentations and visual aids. This book describes in a lot more detail than I could ever have emagined. I'd recommend this book to history teachers any time and for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders learning about this subject. GREAT BOOK!!!

Rod Gragg has done an excellent job of accurately portraying the events leading to the declaration of independence. Furthermore, he did an excellent job of remaining true to the actual historical events, rather than approaching the subject with a political agenda. I highly recommend this book to any person desiring a deeper understanding of America's founding fathers and the events that led to our independence. I can not wait to read more of Mr. Gragg's books.
