This book is a gold nugget in the form of countless bits of information for anyone searching for their Italian roots. I have been using software to look for my ancestors and was having no luck until I read about women traveling without their husbands traveling under their maiden names. Low and behold I found the passenger list with my great-grandmother traveling with my grandmother from their 1916 trip from Italy to the US! Thank you!

This book is very informative about the history of the immigrations of Italians. The how to read Italian records alone is worth the price of this book. I am going to suggest this book to my genealogy class.

Whether your family came from Italy itself or the Italian-speaking parts of Switzerland, you will find this book gives you HEAPS of detail on how to approach the tricky matter of researching across cultures and languages (assuming that you speak only English!) It also gives a sound understanding of the national Italian approach to archival material. Researchers making their way through all the paperwork need this - plus the text gives you a good feel for what you have to do once you're actually there in person trying to contact the people who hold the records with the information you want to access.

I've been using this book for several years along with Trafford Cole's book about Italian records. Without these two books, I would not have had nearly as much success extracting information from reels of difficult-to-read records on microfilm. They are especially helpful dissecting the different types of records and the distinctive handwriting. There's tons of other indispensable information you'll need to know when embarking on any serious study of your Italian ancestors.

It has been one year since I started researching my Italian Ancestors and this was the first book I purchased. It was so easy to follow and helped me tremendously in reading the birth certificates, to write letters in Italian and to understand where to search.

In this Book you will find God does whatever it takes to get our attention, alot of times not in the way we would expect Him to, but He does whatever it takes to pull us back to Him over and over again.

We may never understand what it is exactly He is doing with us, but we can trust His Heart and trust Him to do what is right.

If you need a reminder of His Love and an assurance of His strength and an example of His Kindness then this is the Book for you!

You will be blessed with His Gentle Thunder!

Max Lucado has written a devotional masterpiece that can attract the attention of any philosopher who is searching for the meaning of life or give insight to any clergyman who is in search of material that can supplement his or her preparation for a thought-provoking sermon.

I am generally wary of those who attempt to use individual biblical quotes to postulate their personal opinions and then formulate themes that they call daily devotions. In other words, beware of those who attempt to use scripture to "fit" their points-of-view.

Lucado, on the other hand, does the opposite. He presents a variety of stories that range from moral tales to historical accounts of triumphs and disasters, all of which parallel the fables and parables of ancient times, and while reading each chapter, one should conclude that if there is any point that Lucado is trying to get across, it is not for his own personal benefit; instead, it is this: we fail to realize that there are so many modern-day events in our world that make the works of the gospel writers just as relevant today as they were in the past and that many of these happenings brought to life are just as applicable to the so-called ordinary individual as they are to the famous figures who headline our daily news.

Love chaplain Ray and his ability to walk amongst the most tragic crisis and still find a "silver lining" of hope. I am a christian and can really relate to his perspective but I have given this book as a gift (too many times to count) to people of other faiths or no faith at all. It is not preachy or divisive, it is instead filled with stories of God's provision and grace and Ray has a way of delivering God's hope in written form just by sharing his story in such an honest, heartfelt way. Most any American would want to know more of what it was really like at Ground Zero and this book will capture their heart. I also highly recommend it to anyone who serves people in tough situations (hospital ministry, crisis care, grief counseling, hospice care, etc.). If you have a compassionate heart and a desire to learn from someone who has been gifted to care for others in the most humble way, this is the book. It will inspire you to watch for the moments that God will put in your own path where you can bring a moment of hope or comfort to someone else. This book is a beautiful gift and a amazing story of hope. I pray all of God's richest blessings on Chaplain Ray and his family!

I recently attended Ruth Graham & Friends conference. Ray Giunta was a principal speaker and workshop leader so I had the privilege of hearing him speak twice. I cannot imagine the privilege of being ministered to by this man during a crisis.

I purchased God @ Ground Zero at the conference and cannot put it down. I don't want to finish it because it is superb. Although it brings back the horror of September 11, 2001, it also tells little known stories of those who minister to the firemen and rescue workers who saw so many horrors and didn't know how talk or release the tears.

Chaplain Ray Giunta personifies exactly what it means to be a mininster for Christ. Today, most people think that Jesus can only be found within the walls of a church, by reading God @ Ground Zero you will see that Christ is where pain is, He is where need is, He is any where people are. The ministry of Ray Giunta is the exactly what this world needs. Read this book and read it again! It's a word needing more expression.

There truly are few books that will touch virtually every emotion that a human can experience. Chaplain Ray is truly blessed by God with a heart and eyes that can see beyond the words of whoever he encounters. This book is a blessing beyond belief. Chaplain Ray communicates his experiences on Ground Zero so vividly and clearly that you almost feel like you are back in the days that followed 9/11 and are walking there w/him and the firemen and police officers and others who by doing their job became heros to us all. Ray Giunta is a mighty man of God and will become your hero as you read this awesome account of 68 days spent at Ground Zero. This book deserves to be read by everyone!

As a Red Cross Disaster Relief worker, I walked the same path during the same days that Giunta was at Ground Zero. It was heart wrenching to hear his stories and, yet, glorious to discover the words he used to provide comfort. Giunta tells the story of one man who suffered a terrible loss. I was stunned to read it because I actually held the same man in my arms as he told me the same story. God was at Ground Zero and every emotion Giunta writes of I felt or saw. Many lives changed forever because of the horrible choices made on September ll. I am so very pleased that Giunta just simply told his stories of his time there. I wish I could tell mine as well as he did. If you want to know what it was really like to be right there, then please read this book. It is obvious it was written from the heart, the soul, and with love and compassion for all who suffered in this tragedy.

After the untimely death of one of my classmates, just two days before graduation, Steve Wariner's song "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" became a small stem of comfort for those who knew her. When his book was released, I found out through a local newspaper that a poem written by a former classmate of mine,in remembrance of our late friend, had been published in his book. After purchasing and reading his book, I felt an overwhelming sense of comfort knowing that there are others who know the undescribable pain that is felt after losing someone who is near and dear to you, but more importantly, the faith that we keep in knowing that one day, we will be reunited once again with our loved ones. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has lost a loved one. This book is definitely a comfort for the mind, body, and soul.

My mother received this book the day my father died. The book contains letters written to Steve Wariner about how this song helped them find some comfort at the time they lost a loved one. It is comforting to know that others have gone through and survived the pain. It provided us an immediate support group. I plan to buy a supply to have on hand in case someone I know goes through this terrible ordeal.

My mother was put in the hospital for what we thought was the flu. She passed away without warning in three short weeks from cancer. This book is a truly remarkable comfort. The song itself really tells it like it is when it comes to life, love, and loss. This book is a good resource to help you through and to remind you that you are not alone, and that things will be okay after the loss of a loved one. Although, I do suggest reading it in privacy the first time, because it will probably make you sob like a baby when you can relate it to your own memories. This book will definitely warm the soul.

With this Bible I am able to open it up anywhere, know what I am reading and how I can apply it to my own life. Suddenly the Bible is not just a book I think I should read, but a book that I can't put down! It has made studying God's word an absolute joy!

Refreshing Truthfulness...

Review Date: 2007-10-06
Great Book. Anyone who's followed history and current events for any length of time must be aware of the FBI's arrogance, public failings, and history of horrible decision making (overall, in general terms..certainly not everyone in the oranization). Much (or most) of it through horrible management. It's documented nearly every day. I.C. Smith details just a few of these instances in his book (along with, of course, the ubiquitus political, white house, and DOJ interferrences). It's no wonder he left the FBI soured.

Interestingly, he even mentions the FBI's trend towards a paramilitary dress code and mentality. Apparently many individuals in the FBI feel cool wearing paramilitary clothing and brandishing automatic weapons. He says the FBI has changed a lot since he began...much of it not being for the better. As an aside, I'd like to hear his opinion on these "national security letters" and their publicized
abuses.

Great book for those who want a better understanding of the FBI and why they do the things they do.

This is an interesting book with serviceable writing that will leave you uneasy about the state of our intelligence gathering and security. The 3 stars are more for writing style but there is a lot of merit in the content.

The author relays, at first, many good stories from what sounds like an honorable career with the FBI. Even as he wades more deeply into the swamp of corruption in the state of Arkansas these episodes have an almost folksy travelogue-esque style with a report-writing quality that is still readable enough to do the job. I had to remind myself that his manuscript was scrubbed through a sanitizing process by at least FBI and CIA agency reviews before publication.

Still we see interagency rivalries, incompetent bureaucrats, inappropriate political interventions, the ever-dysfunctional state department along with internal agency problems. He closes with some sobering observations on crisis of leadership and the FBI's drift away from its mission and missteps that made it a less than stellar player in the road to 9/11 and after. I found the last chapters most worth the read for this.

Taken in conjunction with the excellent (and highly recommended works) Terrorist Hunter, and the Third Terrorist, this book completes a picture of an agency in trouble.

I recommend these latter 2 books first for more info on the war with terrorists, but if you have time, Mr. Smith's memoirs are a nice read. And his book does, indeed, have a treasure trove of insights into the headlines of the 90's and bureaucratic bungling that will drive you crazy.

Great Read - Highly Recommended

Smith's autobiography of his career with the FBI provides an outstanding view of many faces of the FBI. Smith captures the good, the bad and the ugly. Reading the book helps the reader to understand some of the Bureau's great achievements and failures.

The book provides a useful look into the culture of the FBI, a culture that has both great achievements and failures. Like so many other governmental and private organizations as more information is passed to headquarters through the information highways, micromanagement increases and leadership decreases. Clearly this was the case at the FBI.

Published after 9-11 the author offers some very insightful comments on what could have been done and what should be done in the future. Smith also traces the debacles at Waco and Ruby Ridge to leadership failures at the FBI headquarters and the appointment of a HRT leader with no experience in the area of hostage rescues or swat operations.

Sadly these same institutional deficiencies would later prove to be part of the fabric of failure which allowed 9-11 to happen. The Marines stress a culture where the opinions and experience of the senior NCO's are respected and nourished. Sadly the FBI evolved to an organization that failed to maintain high ethical standards and leadership in its headquarters and in doing so betrayed the Nation and the great people in the field.

Smith wanders in and out of international intrigue and then returns to handling high profile domestic cases.

It is not a true history of the bureau, but, rather one agent's journey through a distinguished career at the FBI at a time when its leadership was not up to the quality of the men and women in the field and the challenges it faced.

Perhaps the most disturbing aspects of the book are the allegations that top management of the FBI lied to Congress and others on the issue of critical matters relating the 9-11. Perhaps this is part of the culture that grew after the Bureau promoted senior leadership that had lied under oath about Ruby Ridge and had destroyed documents relating the the issue. Smith points out that the FBI was warned years well in advance about the number of Muslim fundamentalist students taking flight training in the US and after the fact claimed not to have had the resources to have conducted an investigation. With warning from multiple offices, Smith believes that an average analyst would have concluded that there was a real threat. Hence the claim by Freh that there were no signals was simply false. Smith also asserts that the FBI never concluded a complete review of the many documents captured in Manila years earlier. Not only did these documents related to Al Qaeda plots to bomb American aircraft but they also had the potential to relate to the Murad office building bombing.

Highly recommended.

UPDATE
The recent release of a book by the agent in charge of the Oklahoma bombing incident in which he seeks to put to rest any claim of a broader conspiracy has the look and feel of that which IC Smith fought against. Arriving just as Hillary would be vulnerable to any disclosure that the investigation was flawed, the book has the look and feel of another favor to the Clinton administration of which there were far too many.

Not often does a career FBI manager write his uninhibited expose of the FBI. Street agents will stand up and applaud loudly. FBI deskjockeys will cringe behind their desks preferring to believe FBIHQ press releases. I so enjoyed the book I attempted to get my copy autographed but the author's email address is no longer in use. Nota bene: SAC Smith's comments on the Squiggly Box (aka polygraph) is alone worth the price of the book-----and is a chilling caveat to those who might even consider having their lies detected by wires, waves and wiggly lines. Suggest a followup: the 9/11 books by Peter Lance.

A very interesting insider's view. Not to be missed.

If there's one thing that can be said about the FBI it is that they try to keep a spotless image with the public. What exactly goes on inside the FBI? I. C. Smith comes forward with this account of his personal experiences as a Special Agent in Charge. Mr. Smith takes the reader on an autobiographical tour around the world including diplomatic experiences, terrorism, and the many times the FBI ignored mounting internal evidence that could have prevented tragedies. This is the inside story told from his point of view. It not only exposes bungling within the FBI but also examines some of the corrupt systems in which the FBI must work. As Special Agent in Charge of the Arkansas office he had unique insight into and a lot of problems dealing with the corrupt political system through which Bill Clinton rose to become governor and then president. Mr. Smith pulls no punches and includes lots of names in the book including Janet Reno, Rafael del Pino, the Clintons, and Kenneth Starr. Inside: A Top G-Man Exposes Spies, Lies, and Bureaucratic Bungling Inside the FBI is highly recommended, entertaining, and enlightening.

If every Christian followed the principles in this book, the world would take notice. No American Christian should neglect meditating on the truths Swindoll delivers in this short audio book.

Coming from the premise in Ecclesiastes, "God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated," Swindoll suggests four principles to overcome ourselves for a better, more God-honoring life. Simplicity is a discipline 21st Century Christians need, and we aren't going to find it at the mall or in many other Christian books.

This small, quick read packs quite a powerful punch for the Christian looking for a closer walk with the Almighty.
The author shares with us his experiences with his walk with the Lord and helps us to see, through his life how he was able to draw closer to the Almighty, bringing him to a more fulfilled relationship.

He uses examples, such as turning from our busy lives and being still to know that He is God. He speakes to us of what it is to trust God and to surrender to One that loves us. Tenderely he leads us step by step into a deeper knowledge of knowing the way to a closer walk with Him.
This is a very good read, not too long, but extremely useful to the Christian seeking intimacy with their Maker.

Satan has a unique strategy for every culture. In North America today he has chosen the rat race. Keep Christians too busy doing good things that they forget Who they are doing them for! This little book helps us get back on track. Slow down, find time to be alone with God in a quiet place. Journal your thoughts. Then surrender! I have purchased several copies and given them to leaders in our church. Thank you Chuck!

Let me preface my remarks by saying that I'm a HUGE fan of brother Chuck, and I have great love and admiration for him as one of today's preeminent Christian leaders. Of all the persons I could choose to emulate, it would be Chuck Swindoll. In reviewing this book, my comments are intended to be totally objective and not a criticism of the author.

My main impression of this book is that, while it provides some valuable insights about some spiritual disciplines that every committed Christian should undertake, it stops far short of being a truly practical resource. Chuck Swindoll steps aside briefly from his hectic life to take stock of some key things that many (most?) Christians miss in their day to day walk with God. He introduces some disciplines which we would all do well to practice, but doesn't really talk about the "how."

In other words, and at the risk of sounding flippant, my reaction on finishing this book (about a one-hour undertaking) was: "Tell me something I don't already know." As a believer who seeks a closer relationship with God, I have long since recognized the need to try to slow down my lifestyle and find time to get alone with God for prayer, study and meditation. I have been struggling with these very issues for some time: how to balance work, parenthood, church activities, household chores, rest, etc. while still finding a way to spend a meaningful amount of time communing with God.

It was my hope that this book would be more of a "how-to guide" than just a simple overview of these truths, and in that sense I was a bit disappointed. Don't misunderstand me, I think the book is great as far as it goes, but I wish Chuck had taken the time to take this important subject into much greater detail. He speaks of "depth" but doesn't really provide it here. Had he done that, I'm sure I could have derived much greater benefit from it.

Our church has used the Maxwell Leadership Bible over the past 3 years to equip current and future leaders. We give this resource to over 80 committee and team moderators, to share the many leadership qualities and lessons based on scripture. The response has been very positive and folks are grateful for the recognition and support.

This is an excellent tool to have on hand for those that are in leadership roles in the workplace. I really love how the scriptures highlight the leadership abilities of those mentioned in the bible. I highly recommend this bible if you want to be inspired to be a better leader and witness as a christian.

The Maxwell Bible is awesome--I still like the old King James better than the new King James--But all the insights he gives on the people written in the bible--gives you lots of food for thought and you see things in their life and yours in a whole new light.

If you want to learn more about understanding people this is a big help-it also helps you appreciate God more.

The 17th edition of the Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics is available now. I have seen it on the publisher's website. This textbook is one of the main physician-level educational sources for pediatrics, and I highly recommend it for the personal libraries of all medical professionals as well as those in training. No matter what your field, there will always be the potential that you will become responsible for caring for a child. However, it is usually best to find the latest edition for any textbook.

THis is THE textbook of pediatrics. I own Rudolphs and Oski's as well. This is the book to buy (or read if you have MDconsult). It has the best diagrams, graphs, authors, and is the easiest to read. Don't waste your time with the minibooks such as currents or the mini Nelson's. Just read this one. You'll be glad.

When I was on my PA Peds rotation, I often consulted this great reference in the medical library. Now, that I have my own book, I know its value. There is no other Pediatrics book out there that is better than this one. Don't waste your money on less expensive books like Current Pediatrics which doesn't cover half as many topics as Nelson. Also, for a great little pocket books, try Harriet Lane and Current Clinical Strategies Pediatrics 5 Minute Review.
