"Drydin", by Meghan Murray, is a great book! I saw this book on 1stBooks' website before it was even finished at the publishers, and I promised myself that I would get it. And so, when it was released, I did. And I haven't regreted it at all. The story-line was good, in and of itself, and was easy to follow.

It begins when a betrayal takes the king and queen of Drydin by suprise, and ends their life; and exiles the rightfull heirs of the throne to a neighboring kingdom. But one child was spared, and is now used as the traitor's pawn. But several years later, talks of the true king and queen arise, and militias begin to form, and the war to restore the true king and queen, and the fight to bring peace back to the kingdom comes alive. But even as this happens, there could be a traitor in their midst.

This book has not only been a great read, but has further fueld my own ambitions to right at a young age; being how Ms. Murray herself was 17 at the time of writing this book. You will not regret buying it.

I heard an interview with one of the authors, Dr. Murray Waldman, and ordered this book immediately. Dr. Waldman's father died of Alzheimer's. I lost a beloved mother to Alzheimer's. I have a powerful interest in understanding this disease and whether children and grandchildren of someone with AD -- and so on down the family line -- might someday develop this terrible ailment.

Dr. Waldman has been the chief of an emergency department, the chief of staff of a rehabilitation hospital, and a coroner in Toronto.

In this book, Waldman and Lamb examine the history and pattern of Alzheimer's. They are historical, medical, sleuths.

The bottom line is that they believe Alzheimer's is a type of prion disease, like mad cow disease (BSE) and Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (CJD).

They discuss the modern methods of meat processing, and why modern methods increase risks to consumers, compared to the old-fashioned methods used generations ago.

Specifically, they point to hamburger as a problem area, because hamburger meat may include parts of many cows. This increases the risk of exposure to BSE, and hence, in Waldman's and Lamb's point of view, to AD as well as CJD.

This book is very well-written. While it addresses medical issues, it is written in a way that is accessible to readers who don't have a medical degree.

If you are a vegetarian or a vegan: read this book.

If you have a family member who has Alzheimer's: read this book.

Before saying much else, I should point out (for argument's sake) that Duchesne is a French Catholic writer. Being French he is sometimes apt to put his own opinions above his subject, and being Catholic he is apt to defend ideas that are open to argument. Apart from this he is little given to preaching. For the most part his writing is clean and lucid. His presentation seems in line with a sprectrum of other writers on the same or similar topics. He offers biographies in suitable places without becoming a biographer. He adds little descriptions that make this a "living" history, a very human drama as it unfolds from the Crucifixion. In light of a scarcity of sources for the first two centuries, Duchesne is able to paint a picture without "reaching" for material, though from time to time he repeats himself. A very learned and highly readable history on a subject of interest to billions around the globe, this work is by no means boring, narrow or out-of-date.

Great overview of Asian History

This book offers an excellent overview of East Asian history. It is not a through account of every event that happened in the time period but it provides a great framework for further study. After going through this book the reader can identify parts of Asian history, from the BC era in China to the reconstruction of Asia after World War II, for further in-depth study. It is easy to read although there is a large amount of information packed into a very small amount of pages so while easy it is not a light read by any means. Overall it is a great textbook on East Asian history and wonderful for those who are just getting started in that area.

For those researchers, students, environmental managers who want to get the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art information about the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the Southern California Bight (SCB), this book is definitely a must-have. Each chapter has a well-defined topic and was written by the leading scientists in this field. Though it was written over ten years ago, it is still the best available at this time

Eddie Minetti s a third-grade kid with a good heart, but whose out-of-control behavior always gets him into trouble at school. His day gets off to a bad start when he spills orange juice on his dad's new suit. Then he forgets his lunch and must go back hoe for it which causes him to miss part of a spelling test. The girl seated next to Eddie accuses him of cheating when he looks at her paper to see what words he's missed. After the test he accidentally knocks things off his teachers desk, including a jar of sea monkeys that spill all over the floor. When he tries to Use Tiny, the class rat, to clean up all those sea monkeys quickly, his teacher finally declares, "I've had enough Eddie, enough!" And so he acquires a new nickname -- Eddie Enough. And so the day goes on with mishap after mishap until he lands in the principal's office. With help and support from the principal, his parents, a therapist, and a teacher, Eddie finally learns how to slow down and manage his behavior. Tests also reveal that Eddie has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). Now that Eddie's is a lot happier and finally in control, Eddie Enough feels more like Eddie Just Right! Eddie Enough! is enthusiastically recommended reading for ages 5 through 10 (grades K-4) and ideal for explaining children with AD/HD who are struggling with behavior problems at school. Debbie Zimmett's lively and informative text is enhanced throughout with the black-and-white artwork of Charlotte M. Fremaux.

Particle Physics from one of only a handful whom understand them. Murray Gell-Mann does an excellent job of describing the very physics in which he pioneered; this is a most read for any physicist.

A Great (Woman) Artist
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-22
The late Elizabeth Murray was a groundbreaking artist. Using the visual material of everyday life and experience, she crafted ever more ambitious paintings that leapt of the wall and into the viewers life. Art historian, curator, and painter Robert Storr is a long time champion of Murray's work, and he has lovingly assembled this comprehensive examination of her work on the occassion of her Museum of Modern Art survey exhibition. Often cited as making use of "the domestic," (as if we don't all live somewhere regardless of gender) Murray is shown in this lush and fully illustrated book to have been one of the 20th century's major artists.

On stop reference source for a world wide glimpse of subject
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I had already seen the first associated encyclopedic set, The Great Archaeologists. This particular three volume addition is just as impressive. I would like to compliment Tim Murray for the overall quality for all of the main encyclopedic entries, not an easy task when there are so many contributors. This would be a fine reference source for anyone who wants a definitive, world wide glimpse of the varied field and history of archaeology. A cumulative table of contents in the front of each volume provides us with the complete listing of the main alphabetical entries. Signed entries (the list of contributors forming part of the appendices in the last volume) include appropriate see also references and bibliographic references for further research. A well done powerful reference tool is the index, one of the best that I have seen. Page numbers in bold face type show that the subject has its place in the main encyclopedic presentation. The editor took special care to indicate if the subject reference is a photograph or illustration. Consider this as an essential, first stop reference tool to ground you in a wide variety of related world-wide archaeological subjects.

A very highly recommended, comprehensive, core series.

The "Encyclopedia Of Archaeology" series is being published by ABC-CLIO in five volumes under the meticulous editorship of Tim Murray, professor of archaeology at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. The first two volumes survey "The Great Archaeologists" and draw upon hundreds of scholars from all parts of the world to provide readers with accurate and up-to-date information. These first two volumes present 58 remarkable and informative biographies of the world's best-known archaeologists who have developed the discipline from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Essays conclude with bibliographies of primary sources for those wanting to read about the archaeologists' discoveries in their own words, as well as secondary sources to see what critics and admirers had to say about them and their activities. Encyclopedia Of Archaeology: The Great Archaeologists (Vols. 1 & 2) are enhanced with an historical introduction to archeological biography, a glossary of terms, a full subject index, and more than a hundred dramatic illustrations. Volumes 3, 4 and 5 ("History and Discoveries") is set for publication in about six months. The "Encyclopedia Of Archaeology" series is a very highly recommended, definitive, comprehensive, essential, core acquisition for professional, academic, and public library collections.
