I am an Egyptologist, and I have read the manuscript of the English translation. This book is filled with a wealth of details missing from the other general books on Egyptian religion. It is my opinion that those wishing to read just one book on this subject will now have to read two: one of the other books, and this one

Intriguing approach makes for a wonderful treatment...

As both an Egyptologist and student of the Egyptian religion, I found this book a welcome addition to my library as well. By presenting the "gods" as a family and writing the book as if they were studying a group or tribe of everyday mortals, much information is gleaned about the structure and organization of Egyptian religion and its expression that can be missed in more lofty, philosophically or theologically-oriented texts. Where else can you read about the bodily functions of a divinity? Bravo to the Meeks' for adding a "foundation level" to our understanding of this most beautiful faith structure.

Delightful & joyful introduction to messianic dance worship
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-06
If you have ever been curious about the use of dance in Biblical worship, then this is the book for you. "Dancing for Joy" is a delightful survey of Biblical and historical examples of dance worship. This is not an exhaustive treatment, but enough to demonstrate the principles. The author also includes a number of helpful tools, such as a dance step glossary, and few examples of dances.

The book is a pretty light read, and has a respectful and joyful style. There aren't a lot of references and notes, but when you stop to think about it when was the last time you saw lots of stuffy on this topic? Hopefully this book will encourage more of that.

Dance worship is a pretty distinctive and integral part of Messianic Jewish Congregations; this is the perspective from which the book was written. For those who want to get an idea about Messianic dance, and perhaps integrate it inot your congregation, this is a great book. If you have doubts that dance and worship (Godly) can coexist, this is also an excellent starting point.

In summary this is a delightful book that gives a helpful picture of what congregational dance can be. May you use dance in your worship of the Lord!

Rabbi Murray Silberling's book, "Dancing for Joy" is an excellent tool for anyone interested in the topics of worship and dance. As a theologian, and considered one of the foremost experts on worship dance; Rabbi Silberling provides historical and theological context of dance. And as a dancer himself, he also helps to provide helpful advice and tools for those who desire to begin dancing, or those who have a desire to start a dance ministry within their own congregations. I highly recommend this book!

Outstanding Photojounralism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-27
Welshman Jones Griffiths is one of the world's foremost photojounralists, and it's hard to believe that this is first book in since his highly influential 1971 work "Vietnam, Inc." This collection opens with a six striking early portraits from Wales and England in the 1950s-60s. The most memorable is of a litlte boy about to smash a large rock on top of a pian aso left in a scrap heap. These represent his budding career taking shots in his spare time, and are remarkable for the amount of expression he is able to capture, whether it's on the faces of weary coal miners, wary schoolchildren, or waiting mourners.

Following a laudatory introduction by New Yorker writer Murray Sayle, the bulk of the book is comprised of Jones Griffiths' international work, undertaken as a member (and president) of the presitgious Magnum photographers cooperative. His photography is informed by a strong sense of compassion and empathy for the victims of opression and war. The compositions are strong and many of the images are loaded with stark symbolism. From the very front of the book we get shots of a fat white missionary in knee high socks standing amidst natives in New Guinea, scantily clad European tourists lounging with drinks by a river in Gambia, a white Rhodesian golfer considering her shot with three black caddies and the African savannah in the background.

His series of ten photos from Northern Ireland in the early '70s is loaded with surreal and striking images: a soldier crouches behind a wall in a garden while a woman mows the lawn right behind him; another soldier is prone behind sandbags on a street while women push strollers past him; one of the best portraits in the book is of a grim-faced paratrooper reloads a CS gun. A middle section is scattered with a hodgepodge of images from around the world from the 60s to the early 90s. The book ends with forty images from Vietnam and Camodia, most of which are from his three years there during the war and also appear in Vietnam, Inc.

Defintely a must have for anyone interested in photojournalism.

Phillip Jones Griffiths is one of the greatest living photographers today. This is no small achievement, and can only be clearly understood examining his photographs.
Griffiths is probably best known for his book "Vietnam, Inc." (many of those photographs are included in this edition) but many of his greatest are contained in this superb volume, including some images of the weary, haunted faces of the children of Wales, his birthplace.
Being Welsh, and on the recieving end of British expansionism, Griffiths clearly sympathises (and rightly so) with the Vietnamise civilians (on the recieving end of French AND American expansionism)whose pleading expressions demonstrate clearly how much Americans were "helping" them evade the "evil grip of communism".
If I were to own ONE book of photographs, I would without hesitation choose this volume, for it's images are not only an important documentation of one of the darkest pieces of American history, but an amazing and invaluable work of art.

Obviously written by a professional. Not necessarily thrilling, but a worthwhile look into the history of military deception. Seperation by chapters of deception through the various mediums and modes of warfare is useful. Nevertheless, the chapter on deception in revolutionary and counterrevolutionary warfare (insurgency) is weak in comparison with the book's treatment of conventional/regular war.

One of the best books I've read on the subject. Well organized with good detailed examples from history. I would highly recommend this work to both experts in military art as well as to the average military history buff. A very readable book and simply a fun spark for the imagination, enjoy.

As an armchair historian I was intrigued when I saw this book on a topic not widely written on or understood in western military thinking. Covering deception from ancient history to the 20th century (and beyond) Latimer examines the theory and practice of deception in war.

Dividing the book into sections dealing with air, land, naval, tactical and operational deception and then providing a detailed look at how deception works at each level has proved an excellent way to break down this complex topic. Each chapter is also full of colorful examples of deception efforts in history (eg. the British in WW2 observed the Germans building a intricate wooden mock-up airfield. On the day of its completion they sent over a lone Lancaster and dropped a large wooden bomb on it!). The lessons from history serve to illustrate each point Latimer brings up and keep the book lively and interesting.

Latimer has excelled at making this a very accesabile book which while it provides the detail a military buff wants is interesting enough to capture readers with a more general interest. I was genuinely disapointed when I completed the book, wishing there was more to read!

very good analysis of interesting times

Review Date: 2007-10-14
I have been interested in history since I was young. As a boy, I heard so much about things in the Bible, finding out about things that were going on at the same time in part of the world that was also influenced by Egypt without having been slaves there, etc., I actually became more interested in philosophy than in the political structures of those times. Those who think they already know how to spell might struggle to get used to Sokrates and maps that have cities with different spellings than in the text: Corinth in the index shows up as Korinth on maps 1, 2 and 3, etc. Athens and Sparta played large roles in Greece, but Syracuse, the Carthaginians, and local groups struggled to control cities in Sicily and Southern Italy that are shown on map 4. The second edition, with a chapter that includes many speeches from the court proceedings in Athens, helps to show how court speeches depend on points of view that would be more likely among millionaires and billionaires now, particularly those who tend to be the purest of bastards, than among the lowly slaves that were captured when some cities were wiped out. Democracy sprang up in Greece occasionally, but that is only a small part of what this book is about, and modern life seems to be similarly demented for those whose intellectual viewpoints know a number of wide stances, etc.

excellent!

Fantastic!Suggestive!Inspiring

Review Date: 2001-11-09
Well,I had heard of this book before I saw it in a local bookstore, but I thought it wouldn`t be good,as the desert book "Western Horizon" was said to be better.
But I was wrong at this time. Already when I first looked inside it,I knew it would be amazingly suggestive for me. And I bought it. It was rather cheap for beeing such a book.
It features all kinds of deserted landscape from the US.
Some times,it doesn`t look much like desert, mostly in the Mojave, which the first chapter is about. Deserts are not at all lifeless places - in fact,it is full of wild palms, beautifull flowers and cacti with artistic shapes.
The second chapter treats the Sonoran Desert, and it,too, contains more of the diverse flora, especially the red cactus flowers.
In the third chapter, called Colorado Desert - Life on the Rocks, there are lots of such pictures too,but there is one special image that catches your attention immidiatley - pressure ridges in a salt pan, which looks like the finest crystals ever found!
The fourth chapter shows other kinds of desert. For you who like rocky deserts, this is something. It has fantastic sceneries from hundreds of feet high rocks,as well as a picture of dunes with white sand. That is the most lifeless of all deserts and the quietness is sometimes even frightening.
The fifth chapter is about The Great Basin Desert, and that is the largest desert of North America. Many pics in this chapter contains really fantastic views, and you`ll even find SNOW here!In a desert!Just amazin, isn`t it?Some of the most inspiring pictures are found here, and therefore, this is my favorite chapter. The special with those pictures are the mud formations at dusk.
The sixth chapter is "Painted Desert",which is also very inspiring, and here there are some pictures of the Colorado Plateau, which is fantastic rock formations where fossils of my favorite animals can be found (dinosaurs!). Many of the formations here are well-known from Western Movies. In this chapter, amazing pictures of Grand Canyon can be found as well.
I have now realized that this is my No.1 inspiration source for my animal stories. When I am drawing them,I am always looking at pictures of this book to find a suitable background for my dinosaurs. I am combining the best pictures. And then it is just to add the dinos. When I read this book,I pretend that I am trying to create a good dinosaur movie when looking at the pictures. It is incredibly inspiring, and ABSOLUTELY something for anyone who likes painting or look at landscapes.
You could spend (money) for "The Western Horizon" or (less) for this one. The choice is up to you. But I have made mine. Get inspired and save a lot of money by buying this one!

Jeff Gnass and John Murray have managed to convey with in the pages of this wonderful book the incredibly diverse and colorful landscapes that makeup the desert regions of the south western United States. Their photographic images are with out a doubt some of the best ever put to film. Tne text is entertaining as well with personal insights relating to visiting a particular area photographed. I never grow tired of looking at the images- they are as close as you can get without actually being there. Highly recommended for lovers of the desert regions or for those that would like to experience them but cannot get there.

Passing out after her friend Jane's wedding, Lacey wakes to find a man, a very handsome man, standing over her. Thinking she is in danger she tries to fight him off and succeeds in injuring him. But, Devon is not trying to harm Lacey. He's only trying to remove the champagne bottle from the unconscious woman in his temporary bed.

After a brief struggle and a rather unusual getting to know you period, Lacey discovers that Devon is the best friend of Jane's new husband. Their mutual attraction gets the better of them and seduction leads to passion. The next morning Devon leaves for work and discovers that Lacey is going to be working with him for the FBI. Posing as lovers is easy, keeping safe and out of harms way may not be. What was supposed to be a simple mission is turning dangerous quickly.

From the first description of Devon, I was practically drooling over him. It didn't take long after that to be completely seduced. Not just by Devon but by Lacey and Devon's romance. They took my breath away with their passion! I really enjoyed their personalities and their desire for each other. They were so much fun to read about! The Devil and Ms. Johnson is fun, exciting, sexy and laced with humor. I really enjoyed this
book and highly recommend it.

The problem with Ellora's Cave books is that the writers spend too much time trying to create unusual sex scenes and not enough time building stories. Thank you Hannah Murray for bringing storytelling back to EC stories!

While the sex still steams, this book focuses the reader on the extremely well-plotted story line. There is just enough suprise to keep the reader engrossed and nothing so over-the-top that one loses faith in the story.

This was my first time reading Hannah Murray's work and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

It's fascinating when writers are put in the spotlight - some flourish and some flounder. This collection became compulsive bedside reading for me - it's not heavy on literary theory but it sure revealed the people behind the author's cloak in a personal, perceptive and frequently funny way. I really got the feeling that I was meeting the people interviewed - warts and all. Yet it was done so as to leave dignity intact. Vanities, secrets and courage were all revealed. It made me want to rush out and buy many of the subjects' books. I guess the best comment is that I was sorry to finish. I also liked the way the authors were such an international range - and I recommend the chapters on Antonella Gambotto, Kinky Friedman, Morris West and Brian Keenan in particular. More please.

My older sister turned me onto this book - and she was right, as older sisters often are. It is a real gem. She discovered it when she was Downunder on holiday last month and brought it back with her. The author is an Australian journalist who writes insightful and human stories. Half the book features Australian writers, half features American, English and Canadian authors. Each chapter takes a different approach and you end it wanting more. I liked the humor, I liked the sharp observations, I liked the way he made me feel as if I had met the subjects. I just wish American journalists wrote like this - read it, you will enjoy the experience.
