This very true story opens with GUT WRENCHING TENSION and contiues with a series of dramatic struggles. The author presses forward through government deceit, medical malpractice, corporate greed and her own debilitating emotions to seek the truth behind the wall of lies placed in her path. And, in the end, God wins. Oh, did I mention the lawyer? This book is worth the read if only to know that there is one lawyer in this troubled world that values truth and justice over ego and wealth. J. D. Morrison, a first time author, relates her tramatic experience of perseverance from the perspective of a Christian mother and with the skill of a master storyteller.

A true modest hero. This is a must read.

I read this book several years ago. It is a riveting story of the trauma of war. Dr. Morrison is a true hero. (He passed away a couple of years ago.) He survived the battle of Okinawa. He saw his buddies die, fought hand to hand, and in the end the trauma of war got to him.

Each war has its name for the injury that does not show but is equally devastating as physical injuries, battle fatigue, shell shock, post traumatic stress disorder to mention a few. With the many concussion injuries happening daily from the use of stun grenades. Add this to the uncertainty of identifying who will next try to kill you, we are seeing estimates that as high as 30% of those in Iraq will have similar problems.

In some ways Iraq is worse than previous wars because of the use of concussion devices, along with the long tours and high chance of having to go back again and again. Add the mini-concussions to the feeling that my number did not come up today, but it may tomorrow, next week, next tour or the tour after that, our troops are under the type of stress that leads to PDSD. Dr. Morrison's book is a must read for anyone who has a friend or relative in the military.

I started reading this book and could not put it down. I was honored to know this man. He was an instructor in Dental School I attended. However, as students, we had no idea of the role he had played in WWII, the toll it had taken of him, and the hero we had the privilege to know.

The story of a warrior who bridged two worlds
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-17
"Kamehameha: The Warrior King of Hawai'i" combines text by Susan Morrison with powerful artwork by Karen Kiefer. Together they tell the story of the ruler who forged the Hawaiian Islands into a single kingdom. A lot of information is packed into this slim book, which totals 85 plus xiv pages. The main text is divided up into fifteen short chapters, each of which features an illustration. The story spans all of Kamehameha's life, from birth to death; Morrison writes about his childhood, military campaigns, religious beliefs and activities, family life, political maneuvers, and encounters with Europeans. Particularly fascinating is Kamehameha's relationship with George Vancouver, a British seaman and explorer.

The main text and illustrations are complemented by many interesting supplemental features: a map of the Hawaiian Islands; an afterword that discusses Kamehameha's legacy; explanatory end notes about various aspects of his life; English and Hawaiian language versions of a chant about his birth, with an explanatory note; a chronology of important dates in his life; a glossary of terms and proper names that are relevant to his life; and a comprehensive bibliography. These supplemental features offer a lot of information for readers who might be interested in doing further research about Kamehameha.

Kamehameha truly lived an epic life, and Morrison and Kiefer have created a fascinating account of his journey. This is a coming-of-age story, a story of war and warriorship, a family drama, and a political saga. It's also a story about contact between different cultures (European and Hawaiian) and how new technology impacts one of these cultures. The portrait of Kamehameha is ultimately that of a visionary leader who aspires to bridge two worlds, both culturally and politically.

A uniquely intimate and personal perspective
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-09
Comprising the fifth volume of "The David C. Driskell Series of African American Art", Keith Morrison showcases and explores the distinctive style of Keith Morrison, a Jamaican-born artist who became one of the leading figures in the American art world through the early 1960s through 2004. Morrison was a prolific painter as well as a respected scholar. This superbly illustrated monograph reveals the impact of his paintings on African American art, its critics, and Morrison's personal life as it impacted on his art. More than sixty full-color oil and watercolors depicting Morrison's abstract and figurative paintings provide the reader with the basis for appreciating the artist's subtly comic, religious, philosophical, and political viewpoints as depicted in his paintings -- some of which are included in the Smithsonian Institution and the Art Institute of Chicago, among other prestigious museums and collections around the country. Of special interest is the informative foreword by David C. Driskell who was a colleague and a friend of Keith Morrison and provides a uniquely intimate and personal perspective on the man and his work. Also very highly recommended for academic library Art History collections are the previous volumes in the David C. Driskell series of African American Art published by Pomegranate Communications: Charles White (2002); Betye Saar (2003); Faith Ringgold (2004); and Archibald J. Motley Jr. (2005).

What a great book. It's full of pictures of area's in King Of Prussia that will boggle your mind. To see what used to be and compare it to what it is now in the township is wild. Though I thought a place or two was left out, Mr. Morrison did a great job with the book. A must have if you enjoy local history.
