The Coast Mappers provides a thoroughly enjoyable historical record of the early survey of the west coast of the United States. It is clearly written as a Youth book but the content and artwork make it an excellent addition to any library or coffee table.

Russia's great twentieth- century storywriter
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Babel's greatness as a short-story is related to his realistic precision, and observational power. He sees often it seems into the heart of his characters with an objective and penetrating eye. He portrays in a soul- wrenching way scenes of great violence and human deprivation. His stories like those of Chekhov perhaps like those of Russian writers especially often involve incidents of great cruelty.
Babel's early stories , the childhood tales of which the most famous is 'On a Dovecote'already have his characteristic realistic precision. The stories which make him most known , "The Red Cavalry " stories in which he tells of the Cossacks he rode with are another important part of the oeuvre. Then there are the Odessa stories of Benya Krik, the world of Jewish gangsters, and of a colorful and yet cruel life once again precisely observed.
The tale of Babel's later years when under the shadow and threat of Stalin he spoke of himself writing 'in the genre of silence', and of his being murdered is the tale of a great writer cut down too soon.

This book is addressed to industrial scientists and engineers. Their primary assignments are not directly related to colloid chemistry and they may have no training in colloid chemistry. However, as is so often true in industrial research, development, and engineering, these assignments require a practical understanding of the general principles of colloid chemistry.

This book is a handbook, a resource for the explanation of important colloidal phenomena, for summaries of practical theories, for references to more detailed accounts, and for leads to suppliers and manufacturers.

This book does not contain the mathematical derivations so often required of students. These can be found by reference. It does not explain all the newest research topics. It does contain important ideas to help solve problems and to design new products.

This book is a very limited edition and quite popular therefore it is very difficult to find. I must confess to finding it at an British publisher. If anyone is interested in how a golf course architect thinks and what they actually do, then this is a must book for you. It contains many of the letters between Colt, Allison, and Morrison that discuss many of the aspects of golf course architecture. This book also contains a great biography of H. S. Colt as well.

Both this book and its first edition are very readable works on the subject of 'computer ethics'. Many college courses on the subject use this, but you need not be taking a course to want to read it. Too many people in the computer field are ignorant of this topic, which is not good.

Things That Go Bump In The Night
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-08
The scientist authors of this interesting book discuss a variety of topics dealing with sudden, often destructive, cosmic events. Since the 1800s geologists felt that the earth and the cosmos followed a concept of uniformitarianism, i.e. that cosmic and geologic evolution had proceeded at a gradual, steady state. The main catastrophists were religious people who viewed Noah's flood as an absolute reality. In recent years scientists have come to accept the significant effect that meteorite impacts have had on the earth, moons, and our other terrestrial planets. This is not to say that the authors accept any of the theories of creationists or writers like Velikovsky. They do not (some time is spent debunking these theories). Instead they explore how various heavenly bodies - asteroids, comets, and meteors - have caused abrupt changes on earth and elsewhere.

Interesting tales are also told of several of the moons in our solar system. Uranus's moon Miranda looks like it was once torn to pieces by an impact, and then reformed as a patchwork quilt of rock formations going in all different directions. There is a chapter on chaos in which we explore Saturn's fascinating little moon Hyperion. This moon seems to have a mind of its own, ignoring all the laws by changing its rotation speed and spin axis for no apparent reason. And, it never repeats an orbital performance twice!

The most recent theory of the origin of the earth's moon is presented. There is a section on supernovae, - don't worry our sun will never become one- and there is a discussion of the atmospheres of Venus and Mars, and what they teach us about the greenhouse effect. Will global warming be our downfall? What are the chances of another large meteor striking the earth and causing another mass extinction? The authors' conclusions seem well reasoned.

This book covers a variety of topics in Astronomy, and does so at greater depth than you would usually find in a college Astronomy text. It is also one of those ideal books for the non-scientist: highly informative yet easily accessible and entertaining.

Schlegel fully understands and explains Shakespeare's works exceptionally. I found the essay on Macbeth to be thourough and helpful. Like A.C. Bradley he makes points that are well supported by the play and provides unique perspectives.

This book tells the story of Dalton, Georgia, and how the textile mill led to its development. It is a very detailed look at the townspeople and their struggles throughout a century. It provides a unique and perceptive view of the South's economic and social transformation beginning during the aftermath of the Civil War and continuing with the rise of technology into the Reagan years.
