A legend is bornReview Date: 2007-11-03
But, will Sgorr and his new order go unchallenged? For generations beyond count, there has been a prophecy that says,
"When the Lore is bruised and broken,
Shattered like a blasted tree,
Then shall Herne be justly woken,
born to set the Herla free.
On his brow a leaf of oaken,
Changling child shall be his fate,
Understanding words strange spoken,
chased by anger, fear, and hate.
He shall flee o'er hill and heather,
and shall go where no deer can,
knowing secrets dark to Lera.
till his need shall summon man.
Air and water, earth and fire,
all shall ease his bitter pain,
till the elements conspire
to restore the Island Chain.
First the High Land grass shall flower,
as he quests through wind and snow,
then he breaks an ancient power,
and returns to face his woe.
When the lord of lies upbraids him,
then his wrath shall cloak the sun,
and the Herla's foe shall aid him
to confront the evil one.
Sacrifice shall be his meaning,
he the darkest secret learn,
truths on the heart of Herne.
Fawn of moonlight ever after,
so shall all the Herla sing.
For his days shall herald laughter,
born a healer and a king."
Behold! A fawn is born, just as Sgorr takes another step toward dominance, and that fawn bears a mark upon his forehead, like unto the shape of an oak-leaf. The fawn is called, Rannoch, and his father, Brechin stands as one of the last to openly oppose Sgorr. After Brechin falls, a group of deer, including Rannoch, flee northward, toward the Scottish Highlands.
Is Rannoch really Herne reborn? Will he accept his destiny, fight it, or flee from it, seeking peace in remote lands? Will all of the prophecy gradually come true?
I have now read "Fire Bringer" three times, and it does not lose its magnificence and wonder as time goes by. This novel truly earns the honorific of "epic" and is a story as big as the film "Lawrence of Arabia" and as big as Tolkien's marvelous "The Lord of the Rings".
This is the debut novel for David Clement-Davies, whose earlier works were re-writing ancient history so that it could be understood by, and enjoyed by, older children in elementary school (third through fifth grades). Mr. Clement-Davies, in "Fire Bringer", has woven a complex adventure tale, that features elements from the King Arthur tales, the Bible, and many other epics.
Another strength of this novel is that, while the deer are definitely anthropomorphized (i.e., given human-liked attributes), they still retain their deer qualities. Prime examples are Anlach, the mating season, when the deer become more territorial and combative; and the concept of Outriders, where adult bucks patrol the fringes of the herd, and thereby act as sentries. David Clement-Davies clearly researched deer, and blended that knowledge with the anthropomorphic qualities needed for the story.
I know that some people feel that "Fire Bringer" is a rip-off of Richard Adams' Watership Down (Puffin Books). I do believe that Mr. Clement-Davies was inspired by Mr. Adams' works, but I have read both "Fire Bringer" and "Watership Down", and I prefer "Fire Bringer", as I see it as a richer, more complex tale. Both tales might also be allusions to the rise and fall of the Third Reich, but "Fire Bringer" has a more personal feel to it than many epics, and has elements of the story, from Greek mythology, of Prometheus.
Technically, "Fire Bringer" is beautifully written, with powerful characterizations and a strong power to evoke images of the setting. While the symbolism is strong in the story, it never overwhelms the tale. Instead, the beautiful, rich, and sometimes tragic story unfolds apace. You will never forget this tale, once you have read it, and it is definitely good for re-reading.
Note: Mr. Clement-Davies second book, The Sight, is very good, but falls a bit short of the standard he set for himself in his debut work, and "The Sight" gets too dry when re-read.

Second Best Intro Early Childhood Text For TeachersReview Date: 2006-02-05
Morrison presents a starkly realistic and contemporary overview of the field with an outstandingly streamlined overview of Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development (where he keeps a keen and faithful eye on expressing the ideas from Piaget/Inhelder's THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE CHILD).
After getting the Brewer text and Morrison, you should need no other book of this type. Please try Feeney, Christensen, & Moravcik's WHO AM I IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN if you need one more excellent text.

Tom Clancy Meets Robert A. HeinleinReview Date: 2001-08-21
The level of detail and fast-paced action is like early Tom Clancy at his best. The "micro events" of the spy saga, embryonic science and government cover-up unfold against the "macro events" of near-history. We get to know and understand the motives of the two principal characters--Katrina Fontanova, who won her spy spurs by taking risks during the Russian "putsch"; and Yuri Sverdlov, the failed U.S. Seal ... FBI counter-intelligence agent whose passion for justice overrides political conformity.
When the two strong-willed individuals collide in a scramble for the ultimate disruptive technology--a technology of alien origin--the book accelerates into hyperdrive, and you won't be able to put it down.
The author's web site indicates that "The Ganymede Project" is the first book in a trilogy.
I can't wait for the next installment!

Rav Chanan Morrison explains Rav Kook's Torah like no one elseReview Date: 2007-07-06
Every week he brings down a couple brilliant insights from Rav Kook's Torah, always sourcing it back to the original texts in case the reader would like to venture deeper into the topic. He has a clear, yet colorful style of prose that is infused with the spirituality that a true Talmid (close rabbinical student) of Mercaz Harav (Rav Kook's Learning Institution in Jerusalem, Israel) would have.
He is an American Oleh (emigrant to Israel) that studied and taught in American schools. Anyone who reads this book on a weekly basis will come to a much clearer and truly heartfelt understanding of Rav Kook's philosophy and teachings from the turn of the 20th century.
The book is very intellectual without minimizing the spiritual messages that Rav Kook delivers as many other books on the Philosophies of Rav Kook have, such as "Abraham Isaac Kook:..." by Ben Zion Bokser. The power of Rav Chanan Morrison's writings is that he is not studying Rav Kook as an "Intellectual Endeavor" merely to expand his "philosophical horizons" and objectively compare different modes of spiritual thought. Instead, Rav Morrison studies Rav Kook in order to integrate his teachings into his own life and hashkafa (worldly perspective) as proven by his own biography.
Purchase this book if you truly want to understand Rav Kook and bring the fulfillment of his teachings into your heart.

Very good!Review Date: 1997-08-18
Unfortunately, due to the absolute "newness" of the Beans technology and the awkward transition point we are all suffering through as we slowly migrate to version 1.1.x of Java from 1.0.x, there are inherent frustrations with regard to browser support (or lack, thereof) and, more importantly, many of the discussed products' near-but-not-quite-there support of JavaBeans. I think the book handles these issues rather well, though.
If you are seeking expert coverage into this new and amazing area of the Java Language I can't see a better place to start.

Fantastic at psychic readingsReview Date: 2001-03-12
I Talk to the AnimalsReview Date: 2001-03-13
about in two places in her book. Barbara's gifts as an animal psychic
are astounding. She is a gifted and "real" clairvoyant, and
she is profoundly adept at helping the animals and the people she
communicates with. I called her for emergency help as my great horse
lay dying. I was frantic for help and she was there with great
compassion and gentleness, and helped Arrow and me through his final
hours. She said he had a vertebrae which was snapped or broken, and he
did...he couldn't get up and he was ready to pass on. I was
heartbroken. Later last summer Barbara did a session for me. She
indicated there was a new horse, young and chocolate brown with white
on her legs, coming to me in the spring of 2001. She said this was a
gentle horse and would raise her hoofs in greeting, and remind me of
Arrow. Months later in a "chance" encounter with a Morgan
horse breeder, I was introduced to the young mare with the white on
her legs. She trotted over to the pasture fence and stopped and
immediately raised her hoof in her sweet greeting. This is one
example of Barbara's powerful psychic gifts. She is authentic, very
humble and very totally sincere and for real. I highly recommend this
book to everyone who wants to be gifted a glimpse into the animals
psychic's world. I can say truely she made the worst heartbreak of my
life bearable, and gave me strength to honor the horse that I loved so
dearly. She gave me vision into Arrow's spirit and his presence after
he left the 33 year old body he lived in. I can't say enough about
Barbara Morrison or her book! Buy it, read it, and contact her for a
session about you and your animals...you will not regret a moment of
that experience, I promise!

So Rannoch is a red deer, with all the great characteristics of a strong main character. He lives completely unaware of the danger, his identity, and his powers. This book leads you through many pages all the way to a solid ending.
Five stars. No question about it. BUY IT. (also be sure to read The Sight, by the same author, similar book.)
