The nuts and bolts about hypnosisReview Date: 2008-04-17
I really do love everything about this book, but the one subject I find to be priceless is what to do when no one gets hypnotized. I think it is the biggest fear of every beginning hypnotist. I know that it was mine. I still remember beginning to learn about stage hypnosis and literally going on a quest to discover a plan B when the show goes wrong. I E-mailed every hypnotist I could Google and only got one response. His solution was to bring some magic tricks along with you and if all else fails, turn your hypnosis show into a magic show. I didn't think a corporate client would find that very acceptable after they just flew me across the country when they could have just hired a magician instead. I remember traveling twelve hours to attend a hypnosis seminar from a noted stage hypnotist specifically to find out what to do when no one was hypnotized but still didn't get a satisfactory answer. I just couldn't believe that all these hypnotists got hired to do a show, just threw fate to the wind, and had absolutely no plan B to go with when things went wrong. And I don't care who you are. If you do anything enough times, eventually things will go wrong.
Geoffrey gives you a very detailed solution so you will never have to worry about what you are going to do if no one will volunteer, if no one gets hypnotized, or if none of the volunteers will respond to your suggestions and you have no show. Now you get a plan B that turns what could be a very awkward situation into a great show. I know first hand it's a solution that works because I have personally used this technique to save my reputation, and my dignity, and my show. As far as I am concerned, this information alone is priceless, as is everything else in the book. Run and get this book. I highly recommend it!
A real education...Review Date: 2008-03-06
If I had just found this book first it would certainly have saved me so much time...and time is money...that means the book would have been FREE. I had purchased well over $800. of books, cds, and dvds, when I found this book.
If you were only going to purchase one book to learn about stage hypnotism then this is it. This is written more like a text book, actual education. I read until I reached the last page, cancelling all plans for that day. The book was written so that a person could actually decide if that is the direction they want to go or not.
My only complaint is that it left me wanting to move to Ronning's town so that I could study full time with him.
Excellent Stage Hypnosis ResourceReview Date: 2008-02-11
There is a bonus segment at the end of the book that readers should not skip. It is about (and mostly by) stage hypnotist Chris Frolic. It is recounts how Frolic went from novice to successful stage hypnotist utilizing Mr. Ronning's techniques and assistance. I found this portion of the book helped me understand how a stage hypnosis business could be started and nurtured into a thriving business by use of the techniques taught in Mr. Ronning's fine book.

THE NEW GOLD STANDARDReview Date: 2008-03-08
There are only a handful of good books on Stage Hypnosis. While Ormond McGill's books, such as The Art of Stage Hypnotism and The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism are classics to be admired, they aren't particularly useful for the individual who wants to quickly learn Stage Hypnosis and begin performing shows. Jonathan Chase's Deeper and Deeper is a very good book, but it is nowhere near as thorough or complete as this new work by Ronning.
Well written, comprehensive and filled with immediately actionable tools and exercises, Stage Hypnosis by Geoffrey Ronning would be the # 1 recommended book I would suggest to the individual wanting to learn Stage Hypnosis and get started performing shows quickly.
It's been said that you can't learn to ride a bike by reading a book. And that is certainly true. But you can learn a great deal about Stage Hypnosis from this excellent book. I would say it's much more than a book, it is a Training Manual. If you will diligently study and apply what Ronning teaches in this book, you will have enough knowledge to begin performing Stage Hypnosis shows. Then get out there and perform a few shows to earn enough money to take Ronning's live training. The live training will give you confidence you cannot get from a book.
Highly recommended.

Magical Mystery!Review Date: 2008-04-13
Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down-----so many twists and turns and richly developed characters. Rennie Stride is one cool chick and such a memorable character---flawed, but loveable, and after I finished the book, I felt that I wanted to call her up and ask her over for a cocktail! Mrs. Morrison's ability to develop characters is unparalleled, and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of Rennie's murder mysteries.
Patricia, if you read this review, please know that you've brought joy to someone who has always wanted to live the life that was the late 60's on the West coast. Unfortunately, I was only a child at the time, but always dreamed of being in that singularly spectacular time and place in history. Ungrateful Dead made me feel transported and utterly connected to the scene and the characters. Thank you!
More, please! And SOON!

As a murder mystery Ms. Morrison keeps you guessing right till the end. The story is thoughtful and creative.
Strength of character, especially female characters has always been a strong point in Ms. Morrison's books. Rennie Stride doesn't disappoint. She is a brilliantly multi-faceted women with the stones to stand up for herself and what she believes in.
This novel makes me wish I lived in that time. That I knew those people and heard that music when it was first performed. The texture Ms. Morrison gives this novel is wonderful. You want to live in Rennie's apartment. You want be there beside her as she watched the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane play that the Avalon Ballroom.
I can't recommend it enough. It is a read that adsorbs you from start to finish. Once picked up you won't want to put it down.
An Unusual Protagonist in a Twisty MysteryReview Date: 2008-04-12
Something about the central character, Rennie Stride, was nagging at me once the book was done. She felt different than most mystery protagonists. After a bit, I figured out what it was.
It's pretty much a convention of the mystery genre that the central character acts out of some sort of wound. Certainly true of Hammett's and Chandler's heroes. Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone, one of my favorites, still lives out witnessing the death of her parents.
Rennie Stride is different. She's not a perfect person, she's full of flaws, at the beginning of the novel she's trying to work her way honorably through the aftermath of a terrible life decision (an inappropriate marriage to a nice guy). But what sustains her and drives her into the mystery and its solution are her STRENGTHS: curiosity, intelligence, and most of all loyalty to her friends. This makes it sound sickly but the book really is a good representation of how we all could use our resources for a friend in a dangerous, critical situation.
I'd also like to say that Morrison's descriptive writing is a pleasure, strongest in the climactic scene, whose setting is a key part of revealing the (multiple) murderer. It's another one of the factors that make me look forward to the next Rennie Stride book, whenever it comes out.
Oh, and how many mysteries get a blurb from guitarist and rock archivist Lenny Kaye? Nothing could be cooler.
The Men's Lady of the New Era!Review Date: 2008-03-12
The world of that short, but timeless era of peace and the early hippie movement, (when it was still pure) comes out in this novel.
The old school of old money and keeping up appearances, clashing with the new world of free love, and individuality.
All seen through the eyes of a young woman who made choices as a woman of the new era.
Loyal to the end, Rennie stands by her friends in this fabulously orchestrated murder mystery.
The best part about the book is that I did not see the end coming. I was in the dark through out the novel. A good murder mystery to top it off.
Rennie Strider is the woman of the new millenium! Strong, independent, true to herself, loyal, smart, witty, and full of life. She is her own woman. She chooses her path, friends, lovers, and does not ask permission. She is humble, yet belligerantly driven to do what she believes is right.
I hope there is a sequel to Rennie's life and times!

"Airy-Fairies Beware: This Most Hex-cellent Book Is Not for Those Who Are One-Sided!"Review Date: 2008-04-24
So, if you're into a One-Way-White-Magick-Mentality (and yes it does happen even amongst "enlightened" ones), then this isn't the book for you. Many Neo-Pagans, Wiccans, Witches, etc. know that there really is no such thing as "White Magick" anyway, yet many writers have called it such to offset criticism when they've come out of the broom closet, coffin, etc. It's always been what the person brings to the plate (or Zero Point Playing Field as I like to call it:). It takes a brave Witch to own the duality, and Ms. Morrison is such! I'm sure it will/has shocked many of her readers; it even did me to a certain extent, I'll admit. Probably because the last book I read (over and over, by the way) of Ms. Morrison's was Everyday Sun Magic. Let me set the stage for you: It has a smiling sun on the cover with warm orange and yellow tones and the subtitle is "Spells & Rituals for Radiant Living." Contrast that with the cover art of Utterly Wicked: Curses, Hexes & Other Unsavory Notions which pictures a probably dead witch beneath a house. It conjures up the image of the wicked witch who Dorothy (also Ms. Morrison's first name:) has killed in The Wizard of Oz. The final touch is the red femme-fatale-like shoes, versus whimsical ruby slippers, also pictured on the cover. So, put on your big girl panties and settle in for some mind-expanding data if you dare!!
Curious about why "`for the good of all concerned' codicil doesn't always apply?" (Utterly Wicked p. 13). Or why anger must be the emotion used? Why the Threefold Law, etc. may not apply to everybody? If so, then this is a great book to read for new understanding. Everyone has a shadow side as well as the face generally presented to the outside world. To place a fluffy-bunny-bandaid over the sometimes festering, often subconscious, shadow-side doesn't help you grow to your full potential. So, even if you never decide to act on any of the curses, etc. presented, it's good, overall, to know that they exist. In this book, she covers a less-traveled path; in fact, modern followers of the late Anton Szandor LaVey might heartily approve of some of the curses! So, Ms. Morrison might even transcend some former religious boundaries with this discourse in a sense...there is even a "Living Hell Hex" on page 176! In addition, Hoodoo plays a major role in the book via the "tricks" (not to be confused with spells) that can be utilized. The Yoruba Religion is also expressed in the forms of the deities Yemaya and Oya in places. Furthermore, Morrison lightens the serious subject matter a bit with section headers like "Got Cavities?" (p. 46) which refers to where poppets can be filled.
Finally, you might be surprised to learn that some curses can actually be considered "good." For instance, "The Nurse's Curse" can curse disease and therefore eradicate it. And, for cleaning up the "psychic residue" after performing a curse? "The Beer Bath," of course (as one option). Well, even without having cursed anyone or anything, I know a few friends and fiends of mine that would welcome "The Beer Bath" for that and other things described on page 92. And, like Ms. Morrison points out, "those folks who once called [her] whitesy-lightsy...should've known better!" She has proved herself to be quite a multi-faceted writer.

Another Great Book By Dorothy Morrison!!!Review Date: 2008-04-05
I trusted Dorothy, and am so very glad I did, as I now understand the reason she wrote this fantastic book, and have the tools for when-and-if the time ever comes that I need them!!!
As always, she writes with humor and much knowledge about a subject some (like me) aren't willing to even explore, much less embrace. She gives us the necesaary tools to take-things-in-hand when our usual approach isn't working!
I can't put it any better than she does in her own Introduction to this book -- check it out and see for yourself -- you won't be disappointed!
A definite must-have!!!
Finally someone writes the REAL info about witchcraftReview Date: 2008-03-31
then here you go..Dorothy delivers!
If you've ever done magickal work and felt like it didn't work...this book can help you figure out why.
If you've been wondering about those witches who would hex you and how they'd be able to do that...you'll appreciate the insight.
If you're a witch and have had floating around the notions that all the other books clammoring for your attention out there are Juuuust maybe not giving you the 411 on how witchcraft really works...This is the book for you. Enjoy.
You don't have to get this book and spend the rest of your life hexing people (unless you need to of course)
but you Can have this book and finally understand how magick really works. An excellent resource as well for explaining what items are good for using what. You decide. But dealing with being a responsible witch is a topic that has been long overdue by authors out there -
Finally, someone tackled the nitty-gritty!
All I can say to Dorothy Morrison is a simple "Thank you!"
Dealing with balance and living in balance is valuable indeed.

Scale and exponential notation.Review Date: 2003-04-27
"At one end, far out where the galaxies appear like glowing froth in darkness, all our sciences become only one: cosmology. ... At the other end, for the very small we again have one science only: particle physics. There are even hints that the two ends inform each other." Evidence, perhaps, that television isn't all bad, the concept here was developed for a TV special program (quite a few years ago now), then plucked from video to print. It's a 'can't miss' premise but I find the writing to be slightly awkward and there may be too many illustrations. For a book that begs me to pick it up, it too easily invites me to put it down. Even so, it makes for a reasonably good overview of a universe more than 20 billion light years wide made out of stuff so small that we must describe it using negative powers of ten. The idea here is to illustrate the dramatic changes of scale involved in only a few powers of ten, and thus the "power" of powers of ten. The book's theme is itself quite modest, but for the reader unfamiliar with the concept of exponential notation, this small volume may be a startling revelation. To those familiar with the concept, the book may be a mere novelty, perhaps a "coffee table book."
An outstanding lesson in basic scienceReview Date: 2007-04-19
The zooming in continues, the focus now in on the back of the man's right hand. At the level of 10^(-5) meters, we see an entire white blood cell. When the level of 10^(-8) meters is reached we see the structure of DNA and at the level of 10^(-14) meters, we see the nucleus of a carbon-12 atom. Finally, at the level of 10^(-16) we see nothing more than a random collection of colored splotches.
This is one of the best basic science books ever published; it should be read by all students before they get out of high school. Our brains have an inherent difficulty in grasping the enormous differences in size that exist in the universe. The illustrations are also an excellent lesson in the basic mathematics of exponents. From 25 to -16 is only 41 orders of magnitude and yet we have gone from what is close to the size of the universe down to the smallest objects that are currently known to exist.
Another Scientific American MasterpieceReview Date: 2003-07-07
Parenthetically, anything that would stimulate American interest in science - and stem the tide toward a universal scientific illiteracy - should be welcome. I have seen this powers of ten device several times but the one that stands out in my mind is the opening scene of CONTACT that was marred only by the pitiful displays of stupidity heard from the members of the audience. ("Is that Saturn?" "Yeah, it was once a star and that's how it got its rings." "That's what I thought.")
Back to the book, we start off matter of factly then proceed outward. The commentary is sparse because little is needed. In this case, the picture IS worth a thousand words - more if you get down to it. Get this now-affordable volume and give it to a youngster.
A picture is worth a 10³ words! Amazing!Review Date: 2001-10-05
Although the book does have lots of textual info pages, the core of the book is a series of 42 full-page pictures which depict the an ordinary picnic photo in different scales.
Starting from an ordinary dude resting on the grass, each page turn shows the scene from 10 times farther away. First we see the park he is picnicing on, then the entire city, and before you know it we are in deep space racing towards the outskirts of the Universe.
On the other side of the journey, each page turn magnifies the last picture tenfold. First by viewing a close-up view of the picnicing guy's hand, you quickly find yourself probing deeper and deeper through the realms of biology and chemistry right into the core of a single atom.
The really cool thing about the whole deal, is that all the images are centered at the same object: a single atom on the picnicing dude's hand.
In short, the idea is absolutely brilliant. The images chosen for the presentation is not perfect, but they are still amazing. Of-course, the film is much more impressive then the book, but you can't take a film with you to a camping trip...
No doubt deserves 5 stars; SURPRIZE it can be a child's bookReview Date: 2001-07-27
The idea behind the book is on its smallest scale it is inside a qark inside an atomic nucleus, inside an atom, attached to a DNA molecule, inside a nucleus of a white blood cell, slightly below the skin on a hand of a man asleep at a picnic on some grass in Chicago....all the way to the scale of the universe. My son and I will transverse the middle 1/3 or 1/2 of the journey. He gets to pick his own bedtime books and he chooses this one out of hundreds once or twice a week.
The pictures make a great way to explain the concept of scale and various aspects of science. On the facing page of the main picture underconsideration are objects of the same scale. You can really see that the tail of a dinosaur is 10 times longer than a man.
For the adult, it is an easy introduction to various aspects of science all at different scales. It is not a super serious book - no math - simple explanations. But as a practicing scientist, I view it as vary factual.

The Jim Morrison ScrapbookReview Date: 2008-04-16
With the abundance of material that has been released and re-released and alternately released from the Jim Morrison estate in the past decade very little of it has been any good. It is mostly things that had already been released on one thing or another deeming it pointless to own, but not The Jim Morrison Scrapbook. Oh-no! This is phenomenal and a must have for Doors-geeks like myself. This shows sides of Morrison rarely or never shown.
Chronicling the genius from birth, poet, songwriter, lover, performer, and death. This is a book explaining all of those things about the man, but with actually tangible documents like his will, report cards, letters, his handwritten lyrics, rare seen photos; some of which have never been released to the mass public.
The Jim Morrison Scrapbook is the first in a series of "scrapbooks" being released of famous legends. As of right now a Bob Dylan, and John Lennon version is also available. This is essential for all rock fans! A must read!

The book has many illustrations....always welcome in any book, even one for adults....but especially one for teens and pre-teens, as is this book.
The colour front-plate of "Queen Anksenamon", on shiny paper, is from another book, "Great Ones of Ancient Egypt". It is a painting in the modern style, as if the queen were sitting for it today. In her ancient Egyptian robes and wig, the queen's portrait is three-dimensional, very realistic, charming, and totally regal. Yet, one can easily sense the real person beneath the royal robes. This queen has many problems, which are deliniated in this fictionalized (?) life-story.
Starting when Princess Anksenpaaten, second daughter of the fabled Pharaoh, Aknaton, is just a girl, the book tells of her childhood, her parents, her grandmother, Queen Ti, her cousin, Princess Baketaton, her 6 sisters, her cousins Samenkarah and Tutankaton, and various soldiers, (including the general Horemheb, later himself to become Pharaoh), the evil, and wily counsellor, Ay -- and Kenofer, a young artist from Crete. In delineating Ankenspaaton's story, which unfolds amidst a background of royal luxury, and a family that truly does love one another, a tale of palace intrigue and danger unfolds, filled with friendship, tragedy, terror, and suspense!
Helping the story along are the marvelously wonderful black and white line illustrations...all done in the manner of the ancient Egyptians...that is, showing people mostly in profile, and in stylized poses. But these poses are still realistic, and one is enchanted with their artistry and believability.......
All in all, this is an entrancing, involving, exciting book, filled with historic, true-to-life characters that come to life before the reader's eyes. Coming to life too is the historical setting and atmosphere. Gripping with its suspense, and breath-taking in it's tragedy and romance, this book is a true classic which, one hopes, will endure in the hearts of its readers, (and in successive printings!), for as many generations as Ancient Egypt itself did!
