Satire With A HeartReview Date: 2001-03-06
Don't let the title fool you. In this book, Ken Saro-Wiwa is unapologetically critical of the government, the church, and fellow Nigerians. The stories show the darkest sides of mankind. In an allegorical style, the author touches on everything from adultery to violent ethnic conflict to public apathy. But from within this sea of darkness comes an occasional story about a shining soul, determined to fight the tide.
I found this book to be captivating. Each story is quick (on average of eight pages) and to the point. They evoke a wide range of emotions. Some stories made me laugh out loud. Some made me angry. And others were very touching. It is an easy read, with a very limited use of pidgin which requires consulting the glossary. Despite the dark nature of many of the stories, A Forest of Flowers touches the heart.
While this book stands on its own as an outstanding contribution to Nigerian literature, it would also behoove the reader to learn about the author, who was a vocal human rights activist executed in 1996 for his criticism of the now defunct dictatorship.

Leica is the blue ribbon of opticsReview Date: 2007-12-15
Scores of chapters by various professional photographers cover the usual lighting, developing, films, infrared, specializing in B/w, telephotography, motorized shooting, portraits, composition, etc.
Many sections specialize in Leicas, which is great: how to handle a Leica, take care of it and keep it running smoothly, history, how it changed photography, as a collectible, and other good stuff.
On semi-gloss thick paper, a very large fat book. There is a section of color photos, but more amazing b/w ones, some classic, and some contemporary. One made me burst out laughing! Highly recommended.

Excellent integration of theory and managerial experience.Review Date: 1998-08-09
Perhaps most useful is the chapter on learning from good, bad or indifferent bosses. The best part about the book is that these authors both understand the academic, social science research behind effective management, and they have blended it with hard ball qualitative interviews with real people in real job situations. Regretably, they don't give enough emphasis on how to manage one's own job experience.
All in all, an excellent tool. I have reread it five times and consult it regularly.

"Frank Morgan" using his high intelligence to work both sides of the border in the Frank Morgan fashion. But this time Frank needed the assistance of others.
The plot twists and turns and just when you think you have it all figured out Mr. Johnstone throws in another plausible event that keeps you turning the pages to reconsider the outcome.
I found it a great read!
I look forward to the next one Mr. Johnstone!!
