Most children of Protestant families, like myself, are probably familiar with Warner Sallman's "Head of Christ" and have seen it many times. However, Morgan and his fellow authors give us a reason to actually look at Sallman's work. They debunk the myth that Protestant privelage of the word has brought forth no visual culture and that popular visual piety has no place in scholarship. The writings in this book give the reader a clearer picture of Protestant immigrant visual piety and a man named Warner Sallman, who created a Jesus Christ Superstar for a conservative Christian movie era audience.

Cynthia Morgan enlightens the reader on so many interesting facts about the history of tobacco, she uses excerpts from Christopher Columbus' diary, a quote from Ben Johnson who speaks for his friend Shakespeare (and may be the closest we have ever gotten to how Shakespeare thought about anything), and there is even a bet waged between Sir Walter Raleigh and his queen, Elizabeth. A warm hearted, funny, funny book. I loved the section on the history of advertising cigarettes, but what I liked best was that she took us on the adventure of her own quitting process by making it a story. Has she written any other books? She should write a novel!

In responding to Elaine Lisandrelli's book Ignacy Jan Paderewski Polish Painist Patriot (Champions of Freedom) I would like to first say thankyou to the author for giving me this wonderful book. I have known Mrs. Lisandrelli for a very long time and in that time I have been left with a very wonderful impression from her that will never leave me. Mrs. Lisandrelli came into my life as my 7th grade English Teacher. She is a fantastic teacher and a wonderful friend to me. In regaurds to her book the book was the most fantastic story I ever read. I extremley enjoyed the use of words and the story behind it.

When I was in 7th grade and in her classroom her teaching was so perfect in every way. She knew how to build a students life and courage up into the clouds to study well and be the best that person could be. I for one am one of them. I am a person who will never forget her. Mrs. Lisandrelli means the world to me and always will.

When I graduated in the year 2000 I knew then it was a time to go on with life and leave my childhood years behind me. My school, my friends there, ETC. But the one person I kept in my heart and still have there to this day is Elaine Lisandrelli who taught me everything I know. I have had other English Teachers thru my school years but not one of them was like her.

It is now the year 2002 and soon to be 2003 and I can still hear her voice teaching me and facing all the troubles I had right along with me. She never left my side and was always there when I needed her.

So I say this now and will never forget it. Thankyou Mrs. Lisandrelli for all U have done for me. I grew up and I became one of a kind and that is with all thanks to you. My teacher, My Friend

"Illuminated manuscripts are deeply satisfying in a number of respects. Of considerable beauty in themselves, they also reveal how men and women once lived: what they wore, ate, wrote, read, and thought about--their worldview. From the glorification of God to cautions against sin to celebrations of the miraculous to astronomy, botany, and medicine; from advice on the care of dogs to lurid scenes of martyrdom to rude or romantic illustrated fiction, illuminated manuscripts speak to the medieval citizen's interests and concerns.

GREAT book. Quick, easy read for or to children but interesting for the reader also. Full of facts, trivia, and lots of "food for thought".

G. Campbell Morgan's love for the Lord, heart for the people, realistic view of the world, and understanding of God's presence even in times of suffering is made clear in this book. His grandsons have done an amazing job in capturing his story. It's a must read for clergy and laymen alike.

Lewis Henry Morgan was actually an attorney in Rochester, NY and practicing law around the time of the Civil War. But he is famous for his contribution to the science of anthropology, known especially for establishing the study of kinship systems and for his theory of social evolution.

His work with the Iroquois Nation was extensive; he was even adopted by a clan of the Senecas for his achievements in bridging the terrible gap between the native American nations and the US.

Much about native America would have been misunderstood or lost had he not written his journals, and his development of kinship systems set the foundation for anthropological work ever since.

The artwork in this book is stunning. The portraits are alone reason for having this book.

of the imagination. In a fantasy world we find our herione Cianna as the handmaiden of one of the princesses of a Nordic type nation.

The chif of the tribe is very concerned that they have been loosing more and more battles at sea by enemies and pirates that are using gunpowder canons and other more modern weapons. All of the men's efforts to find the source of this power have failed and we find the mistress of Cianna, the princess Sulitea boast that she can get the magic secret of the gunpowder by posing as a shipwrecked passenger and then letting herself and her two handmaidens get sold into slavery of the tribes that have the power of gunpowder ....

The author spins a wonderfull but very much hard core erotic tale of the adventures of these women in their quest .... As a reader of this book I must warn potenetial readers that this book really goes over the top in several sections that involve man's best friend ....
