"Tired of feeling trapped in a race against time? Time sickness can be cured, say stress experts. Coping with it can be as simple as sitting back in your chair or as involved as biofeedback, hypnosis, or meditation. These techniques will help you slow down as well as become more productive."
- Liz Luftkin, Working Women Magazine

"Whether the goal is resetting one's biological time clock, lowering body age, gaining an hour's worth of rest in a five-minute trance, using a time wedge to sort out tough choices- or even asking advice from an older and wiser version of oneself... you can use your mind to put time to work for you."
- Gurney Williams III, Longevity Magazine

"This very interesting book made available a really varied and complete collection of the many approaches to this fascinating field. I know that Milton considered Linn Cooper to be an important pioneer in the study of time perception. .. Would have pleased Milton very much."
- Mrs Elizabeth Erickson, Erickson Institute (widow of hypnosis giant Milton Erickson)

A highly recommended book! There are many features in this book that
self-promote it. Here are a few of them: front-loading of compound words and plural words, vibrant photographs, highlighted words in red, structured and repetitive nature of text and the Book Talk on the last page. This book is meaning and inquiry centered and lends itself to differentiated instruction. In a Reading Intervention group, we focused on Making connections, Re-reading for meaning, and Inference using this book. An excellent investment!

A truly beautiful and highly instructional book. The photography is captivating and clearly the pictures were taken and layed out by an artist. However, this is not just another pretty book. The beginning of the book starts out with words to practice and word help prior to reading.
This will really help guide parents to help children access the text prior to reading and provide the children an opportunity to practice the new words in context as they read. At the end of the story, there is a list of questions that help a student comment on what they read and demonstrate understanding. It is a highly engaging book for all children
(I enjoyed it as an adult), and especially helpful for children having a primary language other than English. Truly a wonderful book!!

A Quick, Fun and Practical Guide by the Queen of Networking

We are hard wired to be social animals, but there is one particular social and business skill - networking - where many of us are not as good as we could be. Yet a good network is almost always an essential ingredient to a successful career.

Though some people are probably better at networking than others, Trish Rubin shows us that it is a skill that can be learned using a simple plan.

The first time that I met the author, I was amazed at how quickly she established rapport with all the people sitting around a table, focusing on each of them remembering one or two facts about them and making lasting links. She once said that when she is a networking event she is "like an octopus on roller skates!" But you would not know it: she appears completely unhurried, and with time for everyone. In this book she tells us exactly how she does it.

Why the title? Not only does Trish explain how to network in sixty seconds, it is also a mnemonic:
Make a Meaningful Start
Invite Connectivity
Nice Work
"U" Get Me
That's a Wrap
Evaluate your EffortsI
In the book she describes exactly what each means, and how to start applying the principles immediately.

A good test of a plan or idea is to see if it can be applied in different situations and environments. It is telling that Trish has used her methods successfully, not only in the United States, but also in Japan.

This is not a long book, so it is ideal for a busy professional who needs a series of clear actions to help him or her. But despite its length, it is absolutely packed with useful ideas that you can put to immediate use, particularly if you are going to be involved in any kind of networking event.

Highly recommended.

For anyone interested in understanding the world of networking, Trish Rubin's New York Minute: Sixty-Second Tips to Megawatt Business Power-Event Networking takes you along on her networking journeys and shows you how it is done in an easy-to-read format. After reading this little gem of a book, I felt as if I had just sat across the table with Trish, over a great glass of wine, while she shared what I considered to be a great primer into networking.

Want to discover the real "secret" to creative genius? It's just one click away. Buy in this book.

The title itself clearly reveals its most potent reward. This book shows you step-by-step how to tap your creative powers to advance your career or launch a new business venture. In fact, it was while reading this book that I came up with the idea for and launched my current website. The chapter about the 22 Springboards to Imagination alone will kick your imagination into overdrive.

This work if filled with page after page of unique insights into the creative thinking process that anyone can easily follow. It shows you how to unleash the creative genius that is buried inside each one of us. But this work is far more than just a "creative thinking" book. This rediscovered treasure will fuel your creative engine and throw it into overdrive. This book is an absolute must for anyone who currently has or is considering starting a new or home business. In fact, here's an idea. If you know someone who is unhappy in their job, or is talking about starting their own business, then do them a favor, give them this book as a gift. I assure you, they'll be eternally grateful.

And by the way, if you think this book is not for you because you're "not creative". I dare you to invest in this book, read it twice and then say you're still "not creative". It won't happen. You'll never view yourself that way again.

This is one of those books that you keep close to you. The book gives an actual step-by-step process in writing articles for the web and to promote yourself and site.

Jim and his dad, Dallas are proof that this system works. The great part about the book is they take you by the hand and teach you all of their web promotion secrets by writing credible articles.

I must admit, the thought of writing articles just was too overwhelming to me to even think about even starting, and that's about where I stopped.

I didn't know a thing on how to get started, generating ideas, the outline, how many words, where to advertise, etc

The authors transfer all of their knowledge to you.

They definately delivered.

best overview of the century

Review Date: 2001-05-12
Morgan's book is the best that I have found for an overview of the entire 20th century in "classical" music. He divides his analysis into 3 logical sections:

Part 1. Beyond Tonality: From 1900 to World War I

Part 2. Reconstruction and New Systems: Between the Wars

Part 3. Innovation and Fragmentation: From WWII to the Present

This allows for some nuance that a simple list of composers often misses. For instance, Schoenberg's "atonal revolution" is covered in Part 1, along with the "new tonalities" of Stravinsky and Bartok. Part 2 covers the origin of the "twelve-tone system," but makes clear that it did not become influential until years later with the "serial revolution" in France, led by Messiaen and Boulez, in Part 3.

As others have noted, Morgan is not as strong on the more recent period, partly because the book was published in 1991 and thus misses such phenomena as Schnittke's surge of popularity, especially in Russia and Europe, after the collapse of the Soviet regime. I recommend two other books along with Morgan: 1) Gann's "American Music in the Twentieth-Century," which covers developments in the U.S. in greater detail, thus including for instance one of my favorites, Roger Reynolds, and 2) Griffiths' masterful "Modern Music and After," which begins after the Second World War.

As we end the 20th century, we may not realize that 20th century music covers the same time span as the 19th century Romantic music period. Have we grasped the meaning of modern music. To do this one needs to understand the history as well as the dynamics of 20th century music. Here is a book that fills the bill. Not only does Mr. Morgan discuss the growth and change in 20th century music but he does it in it's historical context of our maturing as a world. For many the atonality of 20th century music is hard to grasp, especially when concert artists and orchestras continue to emphasize in their repatoire 19th century music. But as the world changes so will music. A book to awaken your interest in 20th century music and the composers who were the leaders of this period.

Ray Charles' fascinating life is covered in all its triumphs and tragedies in this well-done biography just right for the high-low reader. Very timely with the movie "Ray" in theaters in 2005. Ray's addictions and difficulties are not whitewashed for the reader. Photos and sidebars are excellent. Timeline, Sources, Bibliography, and Web sites are included. A listing of Ray's works would have been a very welcome addition.

I work in the mining industry and most activities which are carried out in the mining industry involve an element of risk. Decisions must be made in a climate of uncertainty and the outcome is dependent on circumstances & events that in many cases are simply beyond the control of the decision-maker. The subjects of uncertainty and risk are thus highly topical in the mining industry today. This book is an excellent starting point for geologists and engineers who wish to get to grips with the conceptual and philosophical basis of uncertainty assessment as well as a sound source of information about the specifics of modeling and other techniques.

The authors use of the word 'policy' should not be a deterrent: this is a fundamentally technical book. They use the word policy to mean '...to evaluate, order and structure incomplete knowledge so as to allow
decisions to be made with as complete an understanding as possible of the current state of knowledge, its limitations and its implications'.

The book is set out logically and comprises:

1. An overview including philosophical frameworks, an extended discussion of the nature, types and sources of uncertainty, and an introduction to the required probability and statistical theory (Ch. 1-4);
2. A good summary of the state of research about 'human judgments of uncertainty' and performance of probability assessments (Ch. 6-7). The psychology of uncertainty assessments, notions of subjectivity,
methods of evaluating subjective risk scores, and discussion of the role of 'experts' are covered well. Readers interested in these topics might also want to obtain James Reasons' book 'Human Error' (1990,Cambridge University Press; ISBN 0 521 31419 4).
3. Two chapters on technical tools and approaches. Ch. 8 covers the propagation and analysis of uncertainty, and the following chapter gives good guidance on the graphical presentation of uncertainty.
4. Ch. 10 & Ch. 11 present discussion of large, complex policy models and some specific guidance on software,& are probably least interesting to a mining audience.
5. The final chapter (Ch. 12) is entitled 'the value of knowing how little you know' and includes presentation of methods for establishing the expected value of including uncertainty (EVIU).

The book is clearly written, well-informed and extensively referenced. It's a bargain.

Unfortunate Baby Names was the hit of my party. Some friends of mine are expecting a baby, and as we read through the names in this volume we had a room full of people laughing until it hurt. A little twisted: Woody Allen meets Robert Anton Wilson. Thankfully, it does carry a warning that the names are for theatrical use only.
