This book is the required text for a course I am taking in a DBA program. I have taken quite a few courses in research and read many books, but this is the best book I have ever used for research. The book is actually enjoyable to read. I will rely on this book for as long as I am in the program and throughout my dissertation research.

This text is an top notch tool for understanding both research design and data analysis. The authors take an excellent approach to helping one understand the research process. As a professor of research design, I use this text in my classroom and recommend it wholeheatedly to anyone teaching research design or trying to learn it on their own. The text is well organized and the concepts are clearly developed.

A 21st century approach to a 100yr old problem
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-19
I found the approach to cost reduction to be far beyond a simple "puchasing" tactic. The authors proposed a 21st century approach that brings the entire enterprise together (engineering, manufacturing, finance, supply chain) in a systematic approach to achieving cost savings. Our company has struggled with global sourcing and outsourcing and this book provides the first alternative that still gets the required cost reduction, but allows us to keep our existing supply base and manufacturing in the US.

A Good Reference Book

I enjoyed reading this book. My work involves costing and seeking ways to cut costs across various departments. The book explains in a very logical, practical and straightforward way how costs can be cut without adversely affecting the operations of the organisation.

This is an excellent reference book that is understandable to both accounting and non-accounting managers. I refer the book often in cost accounting situations as the concepts are very useful and practical.

This is recommended reading for senior executives that have the responsibility for the prosperity of their organisations.

An excellent, in depth, treatment of this topic. Her framework addresses "core activities within a task landscape," ie, dealing with large amounts of information, finding your way through the analysis & making sense of the results. Then she presents case studies applying this framework to different fields, including the design of a visualization tool.

An excellent book about designing complex applications

Provides frameworks for exploration and discussion of designing for usefulness. Due to the youth of the field it doesn't provide complete solutions or processes.

Brings together, organizes articulately, and effectively cites authoritative resources.

Provides a strategic framework for modeling users context/work at a process vs task oriented level.

Look No Further

Review Date: 2007-03-31
With the mighty Intruder's departure from carrier decks, the US Navy put itself out of the deep strike business. Therefore, the Morgan brothers' excellent treatment of the A-6 is doubly valuable, not only as a detailed history of the aircraft, but the 70-year legacy it represented in dedicated attack aviation. Therefore, anyone interested in the Grumman "bomb truck" need look no further for an authoritative, detailed account of one of the significant aircraft in naval aviation history.

Excellent history of a fantastic aircraft

Review Date: 2006-11-11
The Intruder was the first aircraft I worked on, and I have always been impressed by it. This book covers the chronology of the aircraft in tremendous detail, from concept to Viet Nam, the Persian Gulf, and retirement. Squadron histories are detailed from the command's beginnings, not just their Intruder years. Many quotes from Intruder pilots and B/Ns add first person color to the technical detail. Includes a summary of all Intruder losses, both combat and operational, and a model/buno reference.

I intended on buying the book for historical purposes and to flip through on occasion - I surprised myself by reading it cover to cover. There are a few gramatical errors, but they don't detract from the content. If you have any interest or connection to the Intruder, this book makes a good addition to your library.

Momentos of Loss -- and Courage
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-14
President Jimmy Carter has been quoted as saying that life is not fair. The statement is certainly true as it relates to Ms. Hospital. It isn't fair that one person should have so much talent. On the other hand, we can all be glad that she keeps writing extraordinary short stories and novels. ISOBARS contains fifteen short stories, all of which are as good as we have come to expect from this writer. They are about loss, sorrow, violence, missed opportunities. While many of the men in these stories behave very badly-- law enforcement officers rape a trusting school teacher, and boys steal the clothes of a teacher and her two female students while they are skinnydipping-- many of the characters, both men and women, have a strong resilience and courage, even in defeat.

Ms. Hospital takes the reader through a landmine of terrific words and phrases. The past is a "Dead Letter Office." The children of a man's second marriage "had not yet reached the age of disappointment." An old man in a rooming house has been "left stranded by old age and widowerhood." His housemates "came and went, anything could claim them: death, a son or daughter whose conscience got the upper hand for a while, loss of memory." Another character has "learned to let happiness come and go, without anxiety. It always did keep coming again, in new and surprising shapes." One could do worse than have that philosophy.

I am always so amazed and undone by what this writer does with so few words. In the last selection in this book, "Here and Now," in six and a half pages she tells a story of death and loss that will convince you she's as good a living writer as there is. In Toronto, Allison, a college professor who at fifty has just learned that her mother has died in Sydney, consoles Walter, a ninety-year-old retired professor, who remembers the loss of his son who has died in an accident in Australia. They both are awash with memory and sorrow-- as is the reader.

Ms. Turner is an amazing writer.

Chilling, eery tales of violence and how we cope with it..
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-24
A brilliant volume of short stories dealing with multiple acts and varieties of violence and pain and how people deal with them. From the chilling "The Last of the Hapsburgs", which tells of the assaults on women's attempts to construct a zone of solidarity and non-competitive friendship, to the droll "The Chameleon Condition", that imagines how it would be if a philandering professor involuntarily displayed his responses to the world through changes in skin color, the volume ranges through anger to a wise appreciation of our efforts to erect bulwarks against the depradations of time and loss. Hospital's sharp and clever prose never meanders and each story manages to surprise and ring new changes on her basic themes.

As someone who has taken a circuitous route to the world of IT, the book, IT Manager's Handbook, Second Edition: Getting your new job done has helped me get a handle on all of the territory working in IT encompasses. When I first started working at my current IT position at a small company it seemed that my job's duties were coming at me from every direction. The authors, Bill Holtsnider and Brian D. Jaffe, do a great job addressing the variety of problems and solutions that come with managing IT. This book would best serve someone crossing the thresholds of working purely in technology or mainly in management.

At smaller businesses like where I work, it is fairly common to not have an "IT manager" or even an IT staffer. Instead often a manager, engineer, or administrative assistant will be pressed into IT service. The IT Manager's Handbook would be a valuable `read' for such an accidental IT manager.

Not only for children

Few of us remember that this "children's song" has its roots with young men preparing for their military careers. When I took a trip to that academy and saw the links of that chain that once went across the river, protecting our country from foreign invasion, it pictured to me the chains of love that Jesus holds us with, not only in the young and innocent parts of our life, but also in our later life....no man can pluck us out of his loving hands...for Jesus loves me this I KNOW!

The Story of Our Favorite Hymn...
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-18

This is a charming book, and although small, it is filled with a full account of the wonderful story of what is perhaps the best-known hymn in the English language, "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know."

Robert J. Morgan recounts the tale of Anna B Warner and her sister Susan, from their life of privilege in Manhattan to reduced circumstances, living in the shadow of the ramparts of the U S Military Academy at West Point. From their island home on the Hudson they offered hospitality and Bible Study to cadets, and a sense of home as well.

They wrote for a living, and the text of the hymn appeared in a novel which the sisters co-authored, called "Say and Seal". Soon thereafter, people were eager to be able to sing them; thus, William Bradbury wrote the tune to go with it that we know and can sing by heart. And in case we think that the theology is too simplistic, all we need remember is that the most celebrated theologian of the 20th Century, Dr. Karl Barth, considered the hymn the greatest theological discovery he ever made.

This is a good book to read and to give. Christian educators and pastors will especially relish the text and the accompanying archival photographs. The story of the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington is an added bonus.
