Outstanding primer for both the new investor and the more experienced investor interested in improving her/his investing savvy.

First, this book illustrates rather convincingly, how investing just a moderate amount of money consistently over a period of time, can build personal wealth beyond most people's highest expectations. Makes it clear that there are no "guaranteed, get rich quick approaches" but that by being patient and investing in any of a broad range of solid investments...."financial serenity" is definitely within reach.

Then, this book explains the basics of personal financial management; including life insurance, real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, REITs, futures, annuities, 401k plans, IRAs and tips to help determine which is right for you. This explanation of the basics, provides a framework which can be used to help individuals determine which investment vehicles fit their personal financial profile/style, and how they can take the first steps in building a personal financial plan which can secure their future.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their financial position in life. It is written by one of the world's leading financial management experts in terms that anyone, from any walk of life/profession can easily understand.

Very Helpful Book On Separation

I really was helped by this honest book about how tough a separation is. He is easy to read and the chapters are short. Each chapter has one big idea with some good illustrations. It is a good read. I found out that the series continues as Surviving The "D" Bomb about divorce and Life Echoes about children's issues. I've shared the book with others who were also helped.

Great Christian book on what a marital separation is like.

This is a unique book about what it is like to go through a separation. The author combines pain and humor to talk about the experience. Transparent and warm it has you crying and laughing. Remarkable writer. It is a real window on the experience. I've been separated and it was a book where I could keep saying, "Yes" with similar feelings. It is a gift to give anyone going through separation and friends/family to understand. Written from a Christian point of view but not pushy on religion. I hope the author writes more.

Inspiring and Helpful for Making the World a Better place!

Review Date: 2004-08-25
As a busy wife responsible for the care and nurturing of so many lives outside my own, it's nice to be reminded that it's "God's job" to hand the "fruit production" in my life - to bestow upon me the fruit of the Spirit. Most days I'm just busy ensuring that four sets of teeth get brushed after every meal - the thought of being loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and exercising self control can be daunting. Thank goodness for encouraging authors like Elisa Morgan, who not only inspire the heart, but also offer the tools to keep me aiming at and running towards my spiritual goals.

NAKED FRUIT gives moms the tools they need to open their hearts and souls to accepting the Spirit's gift, and equips them to grow in their relationship with God and with those whose lives they touch. Author and MOPS International President Elisa Morgan's concept that the "Naked Fruit" of a relationship with God is simply becoming (as best we can) like Jesus is as refreshingly satisfying as the first bite into a luscious orange on a hot summer afternoon!

The book's brief, yet insightful chapters end in thought provoking (but manageable) "Fruit for Thought" exercised designed to help busy mothers see a clear path to growing more fruitful in their own circles of relation. Although the book is aimed at mothers, any Christian looking to honestly make the world a better place and wanting to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control will doubtless benefit from the experience of reading, savoring and digesting NAKED FRUIT.

I purchased this book for my grandson, Morgan (age 3), initially because it had his name on the cover. After reading it to him he became entranced with Grandfather Rabbit and the growing up bunny machine (possibly because he is a bit passionate about anything with wheels). It is rapidly becoming his favorite "read to me book" and we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of his very own Night Night Bunny. The story is simple, the characters clearly developed and the book is beautifully illustrated with details to capture a child's eye. Everytime he looks at the book he seems to notice something new on the page to point out. What a wonderful way to address a child's fear!!!

I ordered this book for several reasons including my own passion for owning, playing and collecting vintage guitars. The photos in this book are stunning as is the variety of examples shown. This is also a very good reference for those interested in custom colors and which also shows how much variation exists in the same model guitar in the same color from the same year. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates great works of art.

I read this book after attending a live seminar from Debbie Bermont. I must tell you that I was blown away. I am a student of marketing and an entrepreneur with business revenue over 25 million dollars per year, so I half expected to hear a re-tread of everything I have heard before. I wasn't jaded, but neither was I expecting a gold mine of marketing insights to deliver on the promise of "Outrageous Business Growth!" After the seminar, I began to read her book and cannot wait to implement and execute in my business. Just the beginning part of what Debbie calls the "Alignment Process" was insightful enough to make me rethink many of the areas of my business that have been on autopilot for a while. I am excited to take a new approach to some of these areas for increased revenue and a decrease in expenses.

I highly recommend Debbie Bermont's book, "Outrageous Business Growth" and believe that any business of any size in any market and any economy will find that this book clearly delivers on the promise of the title.

The bible of criminology

This is one of the best books out there dealing with criminology. It is huge and has essays dealing with many subjects written by some of the most influential criminologists in England and abroad.

Outstanding
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-04
This is the leading modern text in criminology, comprehensive and authoritative, written by 35 distinguished British contributors. The editors are Mike Maguire, Professor of Criminology at Cardiff University, Rod Morgan, Chairman of the Youth Justice Board of England and Wales and Professor Emeritus at Bristol University, and Robert Reiner, Professor of Criminology at the London School of Economics.

It has five parts: the history and theory of criminology, the social construction of crime and crime control, the dimensions of crime, the forms of crime, and reactions to crime. It covers research and policy developments and their relationship to race, gender, youth culture and political economy.

The evidence is that the serious violent crime rate is much higher in Thatcherite political economies than in welfarist ones. As Reiner writes, there is a plethora of material confirming that crime of all kinds is linked to inequality, relative deprivation, and unemployment. So, for example, the rise in crime in Britain in the 1980s was due to what happened in the 1980s: naturally Thatcher blamed it on what had happened 20 years before. And it was the 1980s, not the 1960s, that saw the dramatic rise in opiate use here.

The evidence shows that states with higher welfare spending have less crime and lower imprisonment rates. For every dollar spent, Michigans Head Start welfare programme brought $17 of benefit by cutting crime, thereby cutting the numbers imprisoned and thus the costs of imprisonment.

Of course, recognising that crime has root causes does not stop us exploring all possible avenues of crime reduction, victim support and penal reform. Nor does it mean ignoring offenders moral responsibility. Understanding does not cancel the need for judgment.

Thatcherite political economies also have more punitive penal policies. Yet welfarist Sweden has had a smaller rise in crime than Britain, while having a less punitive penal policy. Similarly, Finland has dramatically cut its prison numbers, without increasing crime.

Growing economic inequality and social polarisation increase crime and therefore insecurity and fear. We cannot afford to leave the economy, or society or security to the market. We need to take responsibility for all aspects of our society.

A must for anyone interested in or studying criminology

A vast collection of essays on different criminological subjects that covers most things on a course of study. Will also act as a good book for reference and background reading. Although it appears pricey it does cover a lot of ground and is indeed very cost effective when compared to similar books that offer not much for a similar price. The only criticism is this - if you are wanting a feminist perspective this often comes off as lacking, although in saying this it does (by this ommission) reveal the holes in criminological research that feminists are seeking to correct. Well worth adding to your collection.

And did I mention that the pictures in this book are outstanding?

Useful and practical advice for network managers

I am a network teacher that is preparing two courses: "Network engineering", which has to do with network design from a systems point of view. (ex. thinking about the network in a bigger context, including hosts, service, etc.) and "Information Flow analysis" which deaks with the how-to's of elaborating a workflow model for networks and planning networks based on information flow. I have read this book and have found that it thoroughly addresses all the areas these two courses will cover. I will use it as a text and reference throughout the course of the term and would encourage others to do so as well.

Network Design Revealed!

This book is amazing. Design, of any type, is an artform. Jim McCabe is an amazing artist. He has a unique grasp of the design process. Networks are notoriously complex systems to design; so many layers, so much technology, so much interdependence. Jim has captured the essence of this non-linear design process and has distilled it quite elegantly. This is an excellent primer on design in general, on networks particularly and ATM based networks most specifically.

Network Design Done Right
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-05
In the vast body of knowledge dedicated to network design this book stands out as a single, shining example of how to do it right.

The approach given in this book is to focus on the larger end goal, providing services via the network, instead of the lower-level technical details. This approach requires greater emphasis on requirements to which three chapters are devoted. Mr. McCabe's treatment of requirements gathering and analysis is among the best in literature and is consistent with best practices that are performed by other engineering disciplines.

What I especially like about this book, however, is the flow analysis that ensures you will produce a network design that has the following characteristics: (1) traceable to requirements, (2) focused on providing application response and network services to users, and (3) is a solid baseline for performance and capacity management of the network as it evolves.

If all networks were designed using the approach and techniques provided in this book service level management would be a less daunting endeavor. This is a five star book that adds a true engineering methodology to network design.
