My five year old brought this book home in his nightly reading bag yesterday. We read it no less than three times and then he read it some more to himself after I put him to bed. It's a great book with well-drawn pictures and a funny story. The last page had us rolling. Now I see that there are other Minerva Louise books out there! We can't wait to read them!

Minerva Louise is so wonderfully drawn and cleverly written that I could read this and her other books to my son every night. I absolutely love this chicken, and the myriad adventures she takes. My son and I laugh every time Minerva Louise mistakes a common item for something a chicken might use, and get a kick out of correcting her. Just a great book.

"The 1999 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO-99) combines the longest running conference in evolutionary computation (ICGA) and the world's two largest EC conferences (GP and ICGA) to create a unique opportunity to bring together the best in research in the growing field of genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC).
"The GECCO conference continues the tradition of the GP and ICGA conferences of bringing together researchers from the entire spectrum of research in evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, classifier systems, genetic programming, evolvable hardware, DNA and molecular computing, evolutionary strategies, evolutionary programming, artificial life, adaptive behavior, agents, as well as real-world applications of all of these areas." - from the publisher.
The relentless high quality of the many papers in this book make it delightful and thought-provoking. (My copy is 944 pages - not "1876" as Amozon has it.)

Boyle's excellent, readable, and well-annotated translation of Juvayni is an important resource for scholars of Mongol history. Juvayni is one of the few primary sources, and his work provides both a view of Mongol history and an interesting look at the cross-cultural interactions between the Mongols and conquered peoples. I highly recommend this book to all with an interest in Mongol history.

A book with extremely useful quotes and sayings. I would suggest everyone to read it so as to improve the vision for leadership and you don't need to have specific preoccupation with any subject like history or Philosophy etc but you will love this book when you read how Juvaini tries to justify the deeds of the Mongols and the embellished and beautified diction of JA Boyle will enable you to comprehend the subject matter of the book in it's true sense.

Edmund S. Morgan has written many books on American History, including the recent _Benjamin Franklin_. He has also read a lot of books. As an expert in the history of the colonial and Revolutionary periods, he has for decades reviewed books on these eras for the _New York Review of Books_, and in the illuminating _The Genuine Article: A Historian Looks at Early America_ (Norton) are reprinted his essays on recent works of American history. They are "... a statement of what I have thought about early Americans during nearly seventy years in their company." In his introduction, he states that part of his philosophy of reading and writing history is "... taking what people have said at face value unless I find compelling reasons to discount it." The early Americans, for instance, said they were conducting a revolution because of taxation without representation. Other historians, viewing the events from different political stances, might have tried to demonstrate that this was a class struggle, or that the Americans had been eager to impose their own taxes rather than to do away with taxes from abroad. No, the American Revolution turned out, in Morgan's view, to be "... really what the Americans said it was." Readers of these essays will find them clear, free of cant, and remarkably charitable. It is important to note that many of the books covered are not about "new" books, but new editions of historical papers, like Federalist and Antifederalist writings or the correspondence of Jefferson and Madison. Morgan in reviews of these books gives his views directly on the historical matters contained, rather than on the opinion of any particular author.
Morgan's view of taking things as they seem does not prevent him from reporting surprises. In chapters on sexual relations in early America, he finds that carrying laws from the old country forbidding sex outside of marriage simply did not work. In the Carolinas, couples lived, as diarist William Byrd observed, "in comfortable fornication." In New England, sermons were delivered about the orgasmic delights of conversion and sexual comparisons were made between physical love and the love of Christ. Marriage was seen as a sexual state, and women were entitled to "that pang of pleasure" which comes from coitus. In New Haven, the strictest of Puritan colonies, a wife could divorce a husband who could produce no such pangs. Some towns had a bridal pregnancy rate of 40%. Although New England is often Morgan's focus, there are many essays on the South. He maintains that New Englanders left many records of what they thought and did, while Southerners left relatively little of such documentation. Several of the chapters here are particularly about slavery. The title of the book comes from an essay on Washington, who generally lost battles, had no known part in drafting provisions at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 over which he presided, and who is credited with some important state papers from his presidency which were mostly ghost-written. It isn't a great record when put that way, and yet Washington was beloved even by such leaders as Jefferson who strongly disagreed with many of his policies. "If they were so awed by Washington, they must have found something in him that is not immediately apparent in the public record." He had, it seems, a consuming passion to be honored, and behaved, from dancing to speechifying, in ways deliberately to cultivate esteem. He consciously pursued honor and power by means of deserving honor and power. Would that all our politicians afflicted with the same need took the same means to satisfy it.
Morgan's essays are exemplary in their clarity. He is appreciative of the thoughts of those even with whom he disagrees. He has a sly wit; he says of one author who repeatedly insists that it would be difficult to exaggerate this or that component of a society, "Some readers may feel that he has overcome the difficulty." While this is a collection of reviews rather than a comprehensive history, it throws light on many facets of the young America, and will be enjoyed by all with any interest in the period and in the American character.

Ordinarily, books that are collections of articles that appeared elsewhere often do not live up to their promise. Have no fear--that most certainly is not the case here. This is so for several reasons. The first is that Morgan is Morgan--probably the dean of American colonial and early American historians, still at it as he nears 90 years old. Second, each of the individual pieces (which originally appeared in the New York Review of Books between 1974 and 2002) reflects the typical Morgan virtues--extraordinary command of the pertinent literature, judicious comments, quick to offer praise where it is due, reluctantly critical when necessary, but always moderate and extraordinarily thoughtful in his judgments. Third, the books that comprise the focus of the individual essays are among some of the most significant published in the field. This makes for lively discussion by Morgan. The book is divided into four sections: "New Englanders," "Southerners", "Revolutionaries" and "Questions of Culture." Some of the better essays are on Franklin, "Plantation Blues,""How the French Lost America," and "The Great Political Fiction." Never one for quantitative history ("counting and computing"), Morgan only becomes cranky when that topic presents itself, although he does unload on the Library of America's collection of "American Sermons." The book is simply a feast for those interested in this period and fine historical writing.

Professor Morgan's book is a delight- a collection of essays from the NY Review of Books spanning over 40 years. He shares his lucid, powerful insights into the early years of our history with sly implications for the present. Mr. Morgan instructs that the Founding Fathers meant what they said; their words were not a conscious or unconscious cover for economic or psychological motives. He is as brilliant now as he was years ago in Yale's classrooms.

Kee-rist this was a good book. Hard to put down. Though I lent it out and probably won't be getting it back, it's good to pass this story along. Geordie (Frank Doran) is an interesting character and his story is funny yet dramatic at the same time. Can't say enough good things about this book. Good intro by Chris Ryan.

As a Special Forces operator I have served with and read the exploits of extraordinary warriors and can tell you the story of Geordie is the benchmark all operators the world over should strive to be or be compared to. Geordie in his long history within the British 22 Special Air Service (SAS) has set the standard and shows us why the SAS is world respected in the special operations community. Before getting into the Geordies exploits with the SAS, Morgan gives the reader some insights of the times covering the early Cold War and the various brush fire conflicts fleering up all over the globe like the Malayan and Kenya Emergences, which leads the reader into Geordies service with the PARAs in Cyprus. All of which sets the tone of the writing and sets up Geordies desire to serve with the SAS. This book covers some of the known exploits of the SAS but with way more vivid insight then must historical works. This book covers some minor details about Para training and SAS selection course not seen in other works. I really enjoyed chapter seven on selection with its detail on the "Fan Dance." Following chapter covers Malaya. Again I enjoyed reading the detail used to explain counter-tracking methods and the patrol routine for jungle living in the hostile rain forest they operated in for weeks on end. The remainder of the book covers little known details involving SAS actions in Oman, Kenya, Borneo, Yemen and the world famous Iranian Embassy seizure that put the SAS in the public eye. As well the there is some extensive information on SAS parachute and driving training and employment from conception of the employment of high altitude parachuting to the adoption of the first modern SAS mobility vehicle (modified Landrover) with its direct linage to the LRDG "pink panthers." Over all I found this work to be a must read for historians, military personnel and the leisure reader looking to elevate their respiration and heart rate from the safety of their home. I look forward to reading more work from Mike Morgan and can also vouch for his early works that also hold the high standard I found in this title. Finally Geordie dared and Morgan won with an outstanding story to tell.

It is very difficult to find good information regarding this breed, especially in book format. This book is great! If you are considering sharing your life with a German Pinscher (GP,) I highly recommend reading this book first, in addition to talking to as many owners and breeders as possible. GP's are a big challenge and are not the dog for everyone, but for the right "parents" they can be pure joy! For the current parents of a GP, the book offers additional training information and insight to the GP mind. I truely enjoy this book and refer back to it often. I highly recommend it.

Stories about middleastern men don't always interest me because of their double standards. However this alpha male Zakour, even though he is a bit arrogant and unyielding at first, really softened up and became very tender and caring, especially after he realized his treasure in Emily. A great book....very good reading.

This family history is told in a voice devoid of self-pity. Her dry humour makes light of her difficult childhood, yet at the time adds more tragedy. This is a brave first novel. She draws the complex life of her father with grace, constantly battling between feelings of contempt and sympathy towards her father as well as her mother. I've heard she has a new novel in progress and I can't wait to get a hold of it.

The novel, Hindsight, is captivating and deserving of 5 stars for its intensity and ability to grab the reader from the opening pages. I empathized with the novel's "narrator" and the tale of her childhood and coming of age. The sketches of the characters and events were written with such passion, yet such clarity that at times I felt as if I were being told a story rather than reading a novel for myself. Mrs. Balfe's ability to convey with feeling and intelligence the mood of a person, as well as the mood of a particular time and place is a joy to experience. The only detraction for me was the few (very few) places in which strong language was used, but because it accurately reflected the moment it was not inappropriate. Treat yourself to this wonderful novel!

HINDSIGHT by Donna Balfe is written with her heart's blood. It is more than a memoir. It is an exercise in exorcism. An attempt to free herself of the anger she carried for a lifetime toward her blind, alcoholic father. It is as compelling and page turning as mystery novel.
The most remarkable thing about the book, is that she spent so much of her life in misery and anger because of this man who was her father, but the book is a love story. A story of how much he loved her and her sister and her mother in spite of his demons. And how much, under all the pain, she loved him. That is what makes it so heart-breaking and compassionate.
She uses restraint in describing the details of the nights of drunken rage and destruction, but the damage it did to her as a child and daughter is tangible. It is no surprise that she follows her father into the blurred world of alcoholism. But she draws her father up from all that and shows the reader his charm, his brilliant engineering skills, his musical talent, his gift with people. She shows us too, her mother's unquenchable love for this difficult man, despite her own failures and weaknesses.
It is said, "if you can go into the pain you can go through it." It's evident that the courage to write this book helped free the author. I feel it may well help others who have suffered like wounds to find the path of forgiveness and release, as well.

This book is beautiful to look at, wonderful to eat, and provides warmth to the heart! The format of the book is amazing with the graphics, pictures of the food, and the color. The recipes are delicious, I personally have tried the doorknob sweet potatoes, nuts and bolts salad, and white berry mousse, which have all been terrific! I recommend it to everyone for holiday gifts!

In this book, Bob Saget has one of the funniest stories about spending Thanksgiving with Rodney Dangerfield before he died that's probably worth the price right there. It's beautifully laid out, could definitely dress up a coffee table, and the recipes look worth cooking. But, let's face it, $5 from every book sold goes straight to the charities supported by these celebrities. I bought several as holiday gifts.

We L-O-V-E Hunky Dory Ate it! My daughter who is now seven began requesting it night after night years ago and then before we knew it, she was reading it to us. She reads chapter books now, but still requests this old FAVORITE and even reads it to her four year old sister. We'll keep this forever and pass it down- Thanks Ms. Evans- Hunky Dory is THE BEST CHILDREN'S BOOK ever!

"Hunky Dory Ate It" is a fantastic book to share with your 2-3 year old. Tots request this book over and over again. The animated storyteller can turn this story into an exciting and fun experience. With short lines and wonderfully colorful pictures, children can re-tell Hunky Dory's couriosity for people's food as many times as they like. This book stimulates toddler's love for hearing and telling stories. My tots loved this story from 18 months old to age four. Yours will too.
