Great Models for Beginning Writers

Even a glance through the table of contents in Lorrie Moore's newly reprinted "I Know Some Things" demontrates its utility for the teacher of creative writing. We tell our students to write about what they know, and what they know at least is their own life history. The stories in this collection, representing a range of today's talented writers, also represents the range of experience the writers had between their early childhood and their middle teenage years. The volume thereby would come in handy as a set of models for young writers in a secondary or college creative writing class.

I just loved this book. It is humorous, witty, inspirational and truly captures the essense of life in New England. If you're looking to laugh at the absurdities of life and chuckle with T.W. as he shares holidays with the in-laws and debates whether he can sell items at a yard sale from inside his garage, this book is a must. I've recommended this book to my non-New England friends and all have truly enjoyed it.

Jim Magoffin, with whom Johnny flew was founder of Interior Airways, Alaska International Air and MarkAir and author of "Triumph Over Turbulence." He writes, "I finally wrenched your book away from Dot and have finished reading it. You have produced a fine book, Johnny-especially interesting to pilots. You've certainly been involved and have skillfully recounted many episodes in a most interesting career.

Former Alaska Bush Pilot and Aviation Safety Consultant John Hein writes, "Ride along with Johnny Moore as he learns to fly, buys his first plane, and makes a living as a commercial pilot. Avgas, adrenaline, and determination are the only things that keep this cool young pilot headed toward success. Johnny and Judy marry and begin their family as he works as a crop duster, fire bomber pilot, and Alaska bush pilot. The ups and downs of flying create an adventure on every leaf of this 383 page autobiography. The stories contain advice and lessons, some learned the hard way. There are safety tips for those who are willing to learn from the mistakes of others. Excellent reading for the pilot or would-be pilot. You will not want to put this book down until you reach the last page, then it will leave you wishing for "Moore."

"I enjoyed this book immensely and was impressed with the author's honesty and frankness. I felt that I was in the cockpit with him as he frantically searched for a place to land his crop duster as he is trapped in a killer ground fog. I shared his grief at the loss of friends or a favorite plane. The cycle of fate predicts whether or not we succeed or lose. Johnny Moore succeeded. Read the book to find out how he did it."

"I Must Fly! has sold so well it is now in reprint. Also its prequel, "Family Centennial" is on the market and available!

This is one of my two and a half year old's favorite books. The poems are short and sweet, and great kid's fare. The illustrations are wonderful and add a lot to the poem's imagery. It's exciting when your toddler asks you to read a book over and over again... especially one that you enjoy too!

Teaches Christian couples how to experience couple praying.

This book, which is being reissued in March 1999 under the title WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HUSBANDS AND WIVES PRAY TOGETHER, contains personal insights from the authors and many other married couples about how they have found daily prayer together so rich, so helpful to intimacy, so rewarding in coming to know God. Chapters include why we don't pray together, how to get started, biblical prayers and prayers from the church to assist in our daily praying, and an outline of adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication. This book's author is not the much-published Carey A. Moore; there was a mistake in the publisher's original printing of the copyright and has never been corrected. The book is soon to be republished exactly with the full content of the original edition.

An immortal book for an immortal car.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-02
Anyone who is serious about the classic cars made between the two world wars knows that the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 stands out as one of the all time greats. In fact Phil Hill, the first American to win the world Formula One championship back in 1961, stated that he thought this was the greatest car built before WWII. It was also the fastes road car built before the war, with a top speed of over 140 mph.

Simon Moore has written a book more than worthy of these great cars. Not only does he trace the history of the car and get into the details behind its design, he actually devotes a full chapter to each and every single model ever made. (There were somewhere between 40 and 50.) The title of each chapter is the serial number of the individual car. He has photos of what the car looked like when new (no two cars were identical), how it changed over the years, and what it looks like today (provided that it still exists, which the vast majority of them do). Mr. Moore was able to track down all but about 4 or 5 of the cars. He has the extra added distinction of being the owner of one of them.

When this book first came out, it won various awards of excellence. It is now one of the most sought after automotive books ever written. I'm glad I bought one when it was new.

Exhaustive treatment of the subject

The authors have done a superlative job condensing years of research into a comprehensive encyclopedia of insect pests of palms. With a holistic approach that emphasizes the biological interaction of insects with their palm hosts, and a mix of basic and applied information, this volume is an invaluable reference for anyone who works with the "royalty of plants," from the enthusiastic hobbyist to an agronomist managing extensive palm plantations. Accessible and edifying for both scientists and non-scientists, "Insects on Palms" will remain the acknowledged authority on its subject for years to come.

A good "feel good" book for dyslexic children
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-02
I bought this for my 7 year old dyslexic daughter. She was very excited to hear the story told from the dyslexic main character. The basic summary of the book is that she was excited about school and then got frustrated with school because reading was so hard for her but easy for other kids. Her teacher wanted to talk to her parents, it made her worried but then it turned out that her teacher wanted to tell her parents that she was concerned and wanted to do tests on her. They learned she had dyslexia, they got her help and now she loves reading. It made my daughter feel like she could some day enjoy reading too.

If only schools help kids with dyslexia as well as the book says....
