Radiant. Insightful. Enchanting. Beautifully written. This is a book you will fall in love with. Themes of connection, separation, and "living thickly" (p. 69) flow through this collection of twenty essays like a river. Moore teaches philosophy at Oregon State University, and also wrote RIVERWALKING (1995). Derrick Jensen's recent interview with Moore in the Sun magazine prompted me to read this book.

"Sitting on a boulder whitewashed by western gulls," Moore writes, "I resolve to study holdfasts. What will we cling to, in the confusion of the tides? What structures of connection will hold us in place? How will we find an attachment to the natural world that makes us feel safe and fully alive, here, at the edge of the water"(p. 14). In nature, a holdfast is the root-like structure that keeps a plant in place, the "glue" a plant makes from sunshine and saltwater to "stick to a rock" (p. 13), or the connection that allows seaweed to "lean toward land on the incoming tides and swirl seaward as the water falls away" (p. 13), never letting go of the ocean floor. With an eye for natural detail reminiscent of Annie Dillard, Moore finds holdfast images throughout nature, from the grip of bullwhip kelp (p. 13), "oysters clinging to every rock, to each other, layer on layer" (p. 66), and "roots pushing through soil" (p. 68), to the "periwinkles, the urchins, the acorn barnacles and rock-wrack--thousands of tube feet on a single starfish, suction-cup stomachs for gastropods, tufts of black hairs to hold the mussels, bony tubes, sticky feet and calcified plates" (p. 28) in ocean tidepools.

Love, home, a daughter's cross-country move, her dying father--Moore also discovers holdfasts in the tidepools of life. "Humans don't have holdfasts of suction-cup stomachs," she observes, "but we do have hearts and minds. We have strong memories of smells that have held meaning for us since we were small, smells that fill us with joy or bring us to our knees with sorrow and regret. Certain sounds go straight to our hearts--seagulls, wind over water, a child's voice, a hymn" (p. 30). "If there is eternal life," she learns, "it will not be the length of your life, but in its depth" (p. 69). Although I have only given this book a four-star rating, it is not without many such five-star moments.

Another such moment is when she contemplates the house that separates her from the natural world on which it sits: "hardwood floors, a layer of spiderwebs and acoustical tile, eight feet of damp air, a laundry basket of unmatched socks, a slab of concrete, and a six-inch footer of gravel fence me off from the earth. But if I dug under that, I could find an ancient riverbed of round boulders, and below that, sea animals so old they have turned to stone, floating on a lake of burning rock" (p. 69). Moore's essays are like superglue for the soul. They will stick with you long after clinging to every last word.

Connecting

I've read most of the chapters in this book twice, some three times. The three sections - Connection, Separation, Connection - enforce the metaphor of the title, the holdfast, the structure that grips the kelp to the ocean floor. So we have holdfasts in life that Kathleen Dean Moore documents here. Love, family, being in the natural world, wondering, creating, remembering, are our connectors. Fear, pain, death, destroying the natural world are our separators. These truths are rooted in what seem simplicities like baking bread, avoiding estate sales, howling with wolves, canoeing a marsh, casting a fly, mastering a field guide, but each reaches out, like the wands of kelp, toward the mysteries of our existence. There is joy here and sorrow, a celebration of life in all its forms. I'll be reading more of Moore and many of these chapters again and again.

My favorite book so far this year.

This book is part introspective -- looking inward. This book is part extrospective -- looking outward. For me, the books underlying theme was about understanding your connection (home) to all of that.

The author managed to do this all without sounding as vague and cheesy as I just did. :)

I don't want to over-hype. The book didn't revolutionalize my life. Yet, I have found myself returning to these pages for more.

If you are the least bit ponderous or enjoy natural beauty -- or would like to grow in either of those areas. I'd recommend it.

I previously read Ms. Moore's book, Riverwalking and loved every word of it. Her second book is again filled with a mixture of philosophy, family remembrances and nuggets of truth. How do we find our way in this world? She seems to live every moment and to cherish what has made her life fulfilling: camping trips, watching her children become adults, remembering her parents, and knowing that the quiet, small moments usually make the most significant memories that will be remembered. I can hear the wind, smell the campfire, taste the fish on the fire and feel the texture of her sleeping bag. I can feel the grief of her father dying, her anger about the clearcutting that ravages a once pristine mountain range, the joy she feels on a snowy morning, and the love and memories that return when she revisits the place where she first met her husband. What makes up a life? Who will remember us when we are no longer alive? I treasure this little book and recommend it highly!

This program indeed is The Home Business Success Kit with emphasis on the word "The". It is truly unprecedented. No other program compares to it. I was in dire search of a genuinely solid resource that finally would not only deliver relevent information but also provide point to point guidance of how to establish an internet business, design/create a website, and develop an online presence uniquely my own. I needed a program that would communicate to me the SEO strategies necessary to engage for optimum success on the internet. This program did precisely that and more. It even has an excellent resource center providing you with a wealth of information, unbelievable support and thus encouragement to assure your success.

After I was introduced to this program I searched no further because everything I needed to have a prominent successful internet business I found inside of Mick Moore's The Home Business Success Kit. His expertise in this arena is impeccable. Instead of being a purchase of yet another program it was a sound investment with the return of a successful future in internet marketing.

If you desire to have a prominent internet business,...you can by investing in your future with Mick Moore's The Home Business Success Kit. The decision is yours, choose wisely.

I am an average computer user and retired. I had too much time on my hands and wanted to generate some extra income and the internet is the obvious way to go. But I needed to understand how it worked and what I needed to do in order to achieve my goals. Mick Moore's Home Business Success Kit explained in down to earth, easy to understand, terms how to do what needed to be done in a coherent, organized manner. Not only does he explain the basic steps to getting started but he tells how to build a web site and get it placed high in the search engines. I am beyond thrilled to have found this fountain of information.

I cannot urge you enough to save yourself time and grief by buying The Home Business Success Kit. Awesome information.

What a sweet story! I bought this book for my niece who loves horses and had recently visited Colonial Williamsburg. Not only a wonderful introduction to the colonial period (an illustrated glossary in the back too!) but an adorable story about friendship. Fun rhyming text and beautiful illustrations. Great choice!

This book is a great way to teach children about blacksmiths and apothecaries and all the rich history of Colonial Williamsburg in an entertaining way. The characters are beautifully drawn little animals and the story is lively and witty. There's a great glossary at the end too that explains everything from a counterpane to a forge (I even learned some things myself!) This book is a big hit with my girls.

Susan Lubner's A Horse's Tale is a gentle, whimsical introduction to colonial American history for the youngest readers. Children will enjoy the rhymes and the carefully rendered colonial clothing of the animal characters. Figuring out why the horse is sad will keep small children guessing until the satisfying ending.

I acquired a rabbit in March of 2001, rescuing him from an uncertain fate in a vacant lot. In September of 2001, he ate the buttons off my remote control. If I had had this book back then, I'd still have buttons on my remote. Yes, the remote control is a favored chew toy of a busy bunny, acording to Ms. Moore. I believe it. He has since bitten the "on/off" button on the remote for my cable, too.

That said, this is an excellent, no-nonsense guide to keeping a rabbit in the house. It describes breeds, feeding, medical considerations and, most importantly (to me, at least), how to "read" a rabbit. If you've never had a rabbit before, you may find them a bit inscrutable compared to a smiley, waggy dog or a purring, kneading cat.

The breed descriptions are interesting. You'd think that it was "big white bunny", "big lop eared bunny", and "tiny bunny". But, there are a lot of breeds, from the Flemish giant, who is the size of a Maine Coon cat, to the Netherland Dwarf, who is the size of an overfed guinea pig. There are a lot of coat desriptions from the Dutch rabbit, which looks like a police car, to the Jersey Wooly, who looks like a tribble from "Star Trek".
(I consider mine a mini Vacant Lot Lop.)

There's a section on special needs rabbits. This is an interesting facet of rabbit-keeping that I was unaware of when I picked up a stray rabbit in a vacant lot and took him home. Rabbits are fragile and can injure their backs easily. Many knowledgeable rabbit keepers are able to provide an injured or even paralysed rabbit in a comfortable and happy existence. This book outlines care for such delicate creatures.

There are a few black and white photos, but the descriptions are really well done enough that those photos are just there for seasoning.

Another bonus in this book, is that it appears to be in 14 point type, which meant I did not have to wear glasses to read it, but my middle-aged presbyopia is another story.

I was pleased to see a new house rabbit book on the market. While I found it slightly less complete than the House Rabbit Handbook by marinell harriman, it still covers most of the basics. It is a bit weak in the following areas:
The author writes about rabbits through an observation of her own house rabbits and I disagree with a few statements she made in the book.
Lack of colored pictures or many pictures at all
facts about nutrition not all 100% accurate.
Howver, I'd recommend it to one who is new to rabbits or has some experience but wants to learn a bit more. Overall, it is an enjoyable book to read and is the type of book you would probably need to read cover-to cover as opposed to using it as a reference

Eve Bunting has a wonderful gift of capturing the meaning of life for children young and old. She is truly a master storyteller.

I love this book and give it frequently as a gift. It is a perfect way to remind the receiver of the ties that bind and cross all barriers of language and distance.

After the devastation of her village in World War II, my Mother planted an almond grove in the hills of her village in Greece where she was born. I promised her that I would visit her grove one day. When I did, I felt a connection and less heart ache, now that she is no longer with us. I now know she comes alive every spring when the blossoms perfume the air in Vitoli.

This is a book that is not just for Greeks, but for all grandparents to show the ties that bind (even when they are no longer with us).Owen & Mzee: The True Story Of A Remarkable Friendship

I am originaly from Greece and I loved this book. There is no better way to demonstrate the love of family and heritage than from the eyes of a child. The olive tree is one of the most powerful symbols of the Greek culture. Under the warm mediteranean sun, its products have provided the foundation of the Greek diet for thousands of years. It has a very special place in the heart of every Greek. If you are Greek you may cry when reading this book. If you are not Greek you will definitely be touched. Besides the beautiful story the illustrations are beautiful, extremely well done. If you want to give a present to a Greek, of any age, I can thing of nothing better than this book. By the way, I planted my olive tree when I was six years old and I plan to show it to my child as soon as he is old enough to understand.

As we move from an industrial economy to an information economy, understanding the core role played by intellectual capital in this new economy is indispensable. As a connoisseur of business strategy, I can attest that "Intellectual Capital in Enterprise Success" represents the leading edge of thinking on the management of a 21st century company. I was especially impressed by the authors' nuanced treatment of ethical concerns within intellectual property law. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks about business.

This book is one of my absolute favorites among the hearing research books. It covers all the basic themes and often gives very recent citations. So it is interesting to read that in some tinnitus patients ears the frequency is emitted from the ear! But together with this is the problem of the book associated: it is a little bit short. But all in all it is great to read and a wonderful inspiring book. Highly recommended also for beginners.

I was an ASU football fan before having the pleasure to read this book. I am now a huge App State Mountaineer football fan, and a great admirer of Jerry Moore. Dick Brown does a fabulous job of chronicling Coach Moore's life and the principles that drive him. The unique thing about this book is that Brown began interviewing Moore and writing this book the year before ASU won their first national championship, so he was there, writing this book, while history was happening, during ASU's run to three straight national championships. I highly recommend this book to football fans and to readers who are looking for a truly inspiring story.
