Finally! Real World Applications for Algebra!

I am a high school special education/alternative education teacher in Oregon, working with special needs youngsters. Contemporary's "Number Power 3: Algebra the Real World of Adult Math" by Bob Mitchell offers the teacher and students real life applications for algebra. And, as a bonus, the pages in this worksheet format booklet are laid out clearly, very clearly, and are easy for the student to negotiate. The worksheets give plenty and frequent opportunity for the student to respond. The students find the book engaging.

After a teacher and students uses this workbook, I doubt they will ever return to the old-fashioned, stodgy, irrelevant, hard-bound and boring algebra text books that are so common in most public schools today.

A breath of fresh air--I recommend "Number Power 3: Algebra the Real World of Adult Math" without reservation!

For the math phobic.

I teach an adult GED class in a local community college. The mention of `math' causes cringing and sweating among my students. It is close to discussing root canals. 80% of the GED is a test of reading skills/critical thinking skills with the other 20% math skills. Top 50 Math Skills, instead of trying to teach to the large fund of knowledge that makes up the 3-4 years of high school math instruction, teaches to the skills that make up the test. The book is very easy to use and includes an excellent overview of the math portion of the test. There is an essential section on how to use the Casio calculator. This book has a pretest and a post test so you can really measure and have a good idea of the areas you need to work on. As in every test-taking situation, having a command of strategies will help improve your outcome. The book places, with good reason, a great deal of emphasis on developing estimation skills. Since it is a timed test, this skill is essential in any student's approach to the math portion of the test. A good piece of advice would be: as you go through each skill, use the internet to Google any skill you need to develop beyond the material presented in the book. There is universe of materials on the internet and this book gives you a starting point from which you can really hone the skills needed to pass the test. Top 50 Math Skills is a real confidence builder and is great therapy for the math phobic when they decide to prepare for the GED. It is the best $10 dollars you could spend if you are serious about getting your GED.

I would also recommend Kaplan GED Complete Self Study Guide For GED Tests. This book is the best book I have come across for the other sections of the test. The Barron's Pass Key GED is also useful because it not only gives full GED practice tests, but also explains why a particular answer is correct, however, it is a bit expensive and somewhat tedious. You can buy all of these on Amazon so you don't have to pay tax and you'd probably get free shipping.

CPA's opinion of Contractor's Guide to Peachtree Complete
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-19
I consider this book to be the best on the market for teaching contractors how to use Peachtree. It is very clear and includes many illustrations, and is understandable by bookkeepers for whom English is a second language.

This book is noticeably thinner than its sister book "Contractor's Guide to Quickbooks Pro". This makes the book quite a bit more difficult to follow. The book assumes more knowledge of construction accounting than its Quickbooks sister. The job cost and billing sections are difficult to follow if you are not already familiar with construction accounting. If you do have a background in construction accounting, then these sections should be just fine.

This is a great book, but it is not for novices.

If you are a small contractor using Quickbooks Pro 2001 or any other version, then this book is for you. In addition to teaching you how to set up your books correctly, it also includes a CD with National Estimator and Job Cost Wizard. These two programs let you create detailed estimates and export them to Quickbooks so that you do not have to retype them saving you hours of time. It's a bargain!

I did not know what to expect when i picked up Conversations With Manfreid, but by the time i got 7 or 8 pages into it, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. The story is incredibly engaging and one finds oneself really rooting for the main character, Troy, and hoping that he can achieve the spiritual growth he so longs for. I also found the setting, which is Southern California, in the 1980's, and the fact that all the characters are musicians, to be really original and entertaining. The metaphysical aspects of the book, like spirit guides and channeling, are presented in a manner that is never sensationalist and the blending of metaphysical concepts with traditional Christian precepts is tastefully done and very illuminating. I loved this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to read a highly engrossing and truly inspirational story.

I bought this particular book for my grandmother and another of this series for my father. The books are full of photography. The photographs are usually taken from a particular photographer so sometimes it can be focused on a certain family or certain eras...however, it still serves the purpose of reminding your loved ones of their childhood, past, or of their past loved ones.

Part of the Global Studies: Latin America & The Caribbean series, Costa Rica: A Global Studies Handbook is a solid educational text written for students, travelers, businesspeople, and anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of this beautiful nation. Costa Rica: A Global Studies Handbook is divided into a narrative section (which relates the history of the land along with information about its politics, institutions, society, and culture) and a reference section (which has a timeline of key events in Costa Rican history, a listing of significant Costa Rican organizations, and entries of key Costa Rican historical figures, places, and events). An annotated bibliography and an index round out this down-to-earth, highly readable primer.

A Gem of a Book

This is a book that you will get maximum value from because you will knit so many things from it.

The gorgeous designs are probably more suited to an experienced knitter. Good photographs, easy to follow designs, most of them easy to photocopy for those of you who 'knit on the run,the bus, while commuting and everywhere else" and spectacular results from easy to obtain yarns (generics specified.) Jackets, cardigans, lacy sweaters, childrens sweaters and sewn dresses to match. Amazing, easy, knitting toys that will make delightful presents. I borrowed this book so many times from the library, I've ended up buying it.

A dream of a book
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-03
This book is a dream. If you like warmth, wood, natural finishes, natural shapes, a relative degree of simplicity where humaness rather than layers of chinz fabric or in-human white lines rules, truth, age and interiors full of love, then this is the most wonderful book on the subject I have ever seen. Of course its dominated by hundreds of full page, color photographs, each one stunning.

The main body of the book (about two thirds) is dominataed by chapters which divide up interior looks according to different countries. Miller covers English Country style, American colonial, Scandinavian/Swedish, Italin and Spanish plus a couple of others. Under each country, we get a tour of a number of special houses which represent the country style of that land. Under Italy, a beautiful Tuscan villa is visited room by room. Under England, a mid-sized Elizabethan home. And so on.

The remainder of the book, is divided into chapters which look at country style according to different rooms: kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms etc. Also a brief, but enlightening tour of country style through the ages - ie by period.

What more could you ask for? Sensational, utterly inspiring photographs - (is the text EVER really that useful in these sort of books?) Incidentally, if you love wood for your interiors, I also HIGHLY recommend Wooden Houses by the same author. all just glorious and real and definitely make one want to either move out of the city or somehow bring the warmth and beauty of this style into one's town house.
