An answer to a question that tends to divide

I had a good friend of mine say to me once "I don't want to have anything to do with a religion that says unless you believe and follow Jesus Christ that you're not going to go to Heaven." I didn't know how to respond to that. It made sense to me, there are too many "good" people in this world that never even heard of Jesus Christ and it just doesn't seem fair that they should be condemned to hell. I know you don't get to Heaven by being "good" otherwise Jesus death on the cross was unnecessary. But for the billions of people over the years that never even heard of Jesus, not to have a chance to go to Heaven just didn't seem fair. I think it's this kind of thinking that makes people "shop" for a belief system like they're in a religious cafeteria. "With Cords of Love" is a response to religious pluralism that helped me with that question of "unfairness" and I know how to respond to that with a little more confidence now. I'd recommend this book for anyone that has ever had trouble reconciling that subject with themselves or with being able to defend their Christian doctrine when asked to. This is one of those books that I had trouble putting down and was sorry when I got to the end.

RE: A Wesleyan Scholar Responds to Religious Pluralism

Al Truesdale has given a great gift in his book, With Cords of Love: A Wesleyan Response to Religious Pluralism (Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City). The book is accessible, and it should secure a wide audience of readers.

Truesdale's gift is presenting the Wesleyan view of God's grace extended to all people whatsoever, while maintaining the Christian conviction that Christ is necessary for salvation. Wesleyans recognize God's activity wherever it appears, says Truesdale, but this does not force Wesleyans to be religious pluralists or believe that salvation comes through good works.

"Prevenient grace goes forth without reference to the historical, cultural, or religious contexts in which persons are born," says Truesdale. "It is the real presence of the Spirit of Christ in a person's soul, working to enlighten and draw him or her to repentance and regeneration and moving him or her toward new creation in the image of Christ."

One of the helpful aspects of the book is Truesdale's distinction between the individuals who affirms nonChristian religions and the nonChristian religions themselves. While not making the distinction too sharp, Truesdale uses real-life illustrations to argue that God reaches out even to those who have not heard the gospel. Truesdale puts human faces on religious pluralism.

With regard to nonChristian religions, Truesdale says that "the value of a non-Christian religion rests upon its ability to serve as an instrument of prevenient grace. To that extent alone can its positive features be recognized, but even then only as a result of God's creativity in diverse cultures - not from some inherent and independent value in the religion itself."

Truesdale reminds his readers that "no religion has saving merit of its own (including Christianity)." Christians should ask, How well does this religion serve the purposes of prevenient grace?

There is much about this book that is helpful. I plan to recommend With Cords of Love to my students and to pastors who puzzle over how to respond in our present age to nonChristians as individuals and nonChristian religions.

As an internist who sees innumberable diabetics on a daily basis, I used this book to help my PA and I organize individualized diabetes classes for the diabetics in my practice. The book is a great guide for diabetics and is easy to read and understand. I think every diabetic should have one at home.

Not Authentic, but Certainly NOT Tasteless

This is a very attractively presented book on noodle recipes from a variety of regions. That's a big plus. I was originally looking for an Asian cookbook with noodle recipes, only to find that most included recipes for deep fried dishes that I tend to avoid, with only a few noodle recipes. Then I found this, and it offers variations on dishes from Thailand, China, Japan, India, Italy, and other regions.

Note that word "variations." Mitchell has simplified these recipes, and in some cases, has done some bold cross-breeding (adding balsamic vinegar to an Asian noodle dish, for instance). This will cause the "authenticity-minded" to cringe. Let them cringe, I say... these recipes are not only delicious, but almost embarassingly simple to prepare. That's a VERY BIG plus for many of us, who would rather make supper quickly, and have more time to play with the kids, write in our journals, or read "Harry Potter." Most of these recipes involve only whisking a few ingredients in a bowl, steaming the noodles, and then mixing in the sauce. The result? Very tasty, very attractive, and very diverse noodle entrees to please the palette. True to the title, they can all be made in 15 minutes or less. You don't need a whole lot of exotic ingredients either -- most of the more esoteric ones can be easily found in a large grocery store or in an Asian specialty food store.

I highly recommend this book to single people who want tasty meals but don't want to commit a whole lot of time to cooking for one, and on the other side of the spectrum -- busy parents who don't mind a mild snub to traditionalism if it means faster meals that are nevertheless scrumptious. Happy noodle cooking!

I am going to write this paper for my Ph.D Program with a major:"Exponential Business Success" Under the kind guidence of my best Guru-DON MITCHELL. Who is the guide for this great major at Rushmore University. All these three papers: 2000percent solutions, Breakthrough Business Success, and Ultimate Competitive Advantage, enabled me to produce 2000 percent solutions under his kind guidence. This book would enable me to produce 400 times the benefits to our comapny and customers and all the stakeholders. I am very fortunate to be his student, and the whole world too; who has been blessed by the Almighty GOD, with a ocean of knowledge for all the creatures of GOD to be benefited to have plenty of prosperity by his business models, in turn would generate plenty of employment, remove poverty, enable us to work: with out stress(As we know srtess is causing great concern to the health of all human beings and in turn sufferings), shorter hours, peaceful life with our family, children, all the loved one's and society at large.

This is the first book that really concentrates on the subject matter. Not only does Lesley give you information on the factory but she also gives wonderful accounts of the different designers and artists. It's not so much a picture book as it is a helpful and informative reference that we need more of. So if your looking to education yourself on the many glass artists, companies, and designers this is one book I would highly recommend.

If you would like to learn how to be an expert on playing the trumpet, I would definitly recomend purchasing this book. It was the best investment that I have ever made.

Useful as a Supplement to Two Other Books
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-21
This is the most recent (2005) guide to grant-winning that I have found, and has the added advantage of being offered within the context of Bioneers 2007 in the exhibits hall. It has not been noticed or reviewed before because it appears to be a self-published book, and ends with a pitch from the author who outlines his fees for helping identify prospective sources of funding, putting the materials together, etc.

Unlike my reviews of the two others books (read the first one before you read this one), here I will not do a summarization, but will compliment the author by stating that while I summarized the other book in my notes, in this book I was inspired to actually note down very specific words and actions that I could take to make our campaign more successful

The other two books are:
"Thank You for Submitting Your Proposal": A Foundation Director Reveals What Happens Next
Essential Principles for Fundraising Success: An Answer Manual for the Everyday Challenges of Rasing Money

A few notes from this worthy book:
* Methodical guidebook, more outline and lists than text
* Helpful focus on achieving high visibility
* Helps stimulate specific ideas unique to your effort, not just methods
* MEET foundations first if you can
* HAVE a business plan
* Discusses how to ask foundations for information about themselves (this may be dated in sense that Internet should provide most of this)
* There is a lot of boiler plate, but I did not take that as a negative
* Useful lists of foundations organized by state, and of top wealthy individuals
* End with consulting options and fees which struck me as quite reasonable for an organization with its first angel, completely unaffordable by a start-up with no funding at all
* No jacket blurbs, very plain, evidently a self-published book.

I recommend this book for purchase and reading.
