This books is really quite nice. It's got a lot of great ads in from all the american marques, and it provides a great trip down memory lane. It can be tough to reproduce ads in sizes other than their orignal, but the book does a great job of it...

Africa--A New Perspective
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-22
I first would like to start by saying that at first glance Africa didn't seem like something that would interest me in reading, but considering the author is about my age and I also had the opportunity to take a course with him at the University of MN.I decided I would read, for a few reason, 1. to help support him as an author who is still getting out there, and as someone who enjoys writing and someday would like to have something published, to see what a "finished" product would be like for someone that is almost equivalent to me (or maybe it should, me almost equivalent to him) Point being is that most of what I read is by well know authors, or books that come highly recommended--I was truly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading Africa and now can be the one to highly recommend this book to my friends and other people.

For the book itself--Africa really gives you a little bit from a variety of genres: action, drama, some romance and even a little bit of mystery, which I think is a greater part of the structure of the book than the actual story. I could not believe how captivating the story was...it was almost impossible to put down for it is a great page turner. I really enjoyed was that it wasn't written to just tell you a story, but it was able to open you up to a new perspective of Africa, even a new perspective on the way of life.
This is a book, regardless of what you like to read, is a book that you will find great enjoyment in reading.

An exciting and wonderful story!

Africa is a story that has everything; adventure, romance, drama, and even a little magic. It is a wonderful historical fiction and once you start reading it you will have trouble putting it down. I would recommend it to anyone.

We took this book on our recent cruise to Alaska. What a great book to explain about the different ports. I carried this in my backpack and would reference it for places to eat and things to do while in various Alaska cities. This is a good guide to let you read about some places most tourist don't know about. It includes maps of the cities, description of things to do in each town, and some local merchants if you wish to shop or even set up a kayak trip for the day.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a concise text on Alaska's inside passage. It has many good points on what to wear, what the temperature will be like, wildlife you may see, and best time of year to go.
I plan on keeping mine for the next time we venture up north.

The amg books are quite exceptional but this one is really something. There are a few omissions I noted (Rotary Connection and Fanny)yet the proof is in the pudding. Prove it to yourself by finding an artist with several works you have a view on and see what their writer says...often the observations are right on whether you fully agree or not. The reviews and bios are quite interesting, and it is a volume to get lost in...a real treasure. A few artists will get more attention than you might like, but it leaves all other volumes like it in the dust.

Last month, this book paid my electric bill...

I've found the "All Music Guide" to be such a useful research tool, that I start lapsing into an "info-mercial-esque" tone when I begin extolling its virtues: "Hi. My name is Alan, and I'm a freelance music writer. When I'm assigned to write about a band that I know next-to-nothing about, I always turn to the 'All Music Guide'. This mammoth music encyclopedia is not only useful, but a ton o' fun! Let's say that I need a quick factoid about some rock group that I despise--like, I dunno, The Scorpions. I just pull out my 'AMG', turn to page 329, and voila; I quickly learn that Scorp's, co-founder Michael Schenker quit the band in 1973 to join fellow metal-meisters UFO. Wow...UFO! But they don't call it the 'All Music Guide' for nothin'; flip over to page 1351, and you'll find incisive reviews of almost every available record by legendary jazz saxophonist/heroin addict Art Pepper. If you only buy one music research book this year, make it 'All Music Guide'." In all seriousness, this thing has saved me hours of net-surfing, in addition to helping me avoid a few hundred research sojourns to Tower Records trying to find out what year Buddy Guy's first record was released.

Michael Miller's Business Plans is one of the best books I've ever read. Period.

I'm an MBA student and this is the first book I highly recommend to anyone interested in any kind of business.

It's wonderfully written. Very practical examples and perfectly designed.

Buy a copy now, there is no other option of this quality.

This book is well-organized and very informative. It is written for the small business owner who has not written a business plan previously and who needs one to apply for a small business loan or to be able to approach an angel investor or venture capital firm.

My favorite part of the book was Chapter 24 where the author discusses Private Placement Memorandum (PPMs). He tells us how to put one such document together after you have prepared your basic business plan. PPMs are what you need to produce if you are going to offer stock in your company to investors who are other than your family and friends.

Appendix A was great. It gives a 20-minute summary recap of the book. I recommend you read the appendix before tackling the book.

The other chapters I enjoyed reading a lot were:

Chapter 11 - Vision and Mission
Chapter 12 - Opportunity
Chapter 13 - Market Strategy
Chapter 14 - Business Strategy
Chapter 15 - Organization and Operations
Chapter 18 - Financials

Chapter 23 entitled "Use Your Business Plan" was less than I expected. In reality, a good business plan is a benchmark and roadmap for a business owner/manager to use to move the business forward. It's not simply a document to look at once in a while or to distribute to employees to motivate them as the author suggests. A business plan is a strategic plan with regards to making money. The author could have done a better job explaining this.

My overall feeling about the book when I finished it was that it dealt too much on writing in general and not enough on specifically writing a business plan. In a way, I felt as though the author was an expert on how to write research papers and in writing this book he simply re-wrote a "how-to write a research paper" book and targeted it for readers who want to prepare a business plan.

I found it odd that the author decided to explain a plan's Executive Summary (ES) when he did. An ES is the introduction to a business plan, and any knowledgeable writer knows one writes their introduction and conclusions after the main body of the document has been written. I kind of expected the author to cover the sections of the business plan in the order in which they are created, not the order in which they are presented in the plan. But that's just me. All in all, seriously consider giving this book a read if you are interested in writing a business plan for your business or startup.

I really enjoyed this book, although I almost did not buy it because the cover art was too much of a bodice ripper look. The story kept me very interested throughout, however implausible the premise, by the end I was completely IN the story. I would highly recommend this for those who enjoy time travel or futeristic romance as well. I will definately be buying the other book Ms. Miller has written and look forward to her next offerings.

Review Date: 1999-01-07
In this book, Sandro Miller reminds us of the power of black and white photography. His subjects are at once frightening and vulnerable. His ability to look through these bikers' eyes into their souls is astonishing. Lovers of the photographic art will find themselves enthralled by the skin textures, tatoos, and depth found in these photographs. Beyond a sort of tribal celebration, this work truly conveys the interpretative, emotive capabilities of an outstanding artist. Sandro Miller has joined the elite of America's finest photographers. Bravo!

I am an art history graduate student and a longtime art lover and this is the American art survey book that I have been waiting for. It is well-written, full of beautiful images and expands the traditional boundaries of the historical narrative of American art. It surprised me with fresh insights that I've found to be thought provoking and inspiring. This book has a permanent place on my bookshelf.

Filled with unusual images from architecture, popular culture, "high" art, and all forms of American design, across race and social class, it engages the reader in the puzzling tapestry of our intricate culture, tracing influences that will surprise both newcomers to this field and those for whom this book will offer a welcome development of American art history and American Studies.

I was at the Whitney Museum this week and came across this book, which I've been planning on buying already--being a big fan of Sillman's work. Besides her art talents, the book in itself is a piece of art. It's not your regular white pages with a picture in the middle, it's done very creatively. It's not on the top of my wish list pile.

artist of our time!

This book is really a work of art itself. I love the work of Amy Sillman and though I can't afford one of her works, this book is as close as one can get. You can really experience the work up close and the different qualities of the paper and comments by Koestenbaum are pure poetry! Its truly a dedication to a great woman artist.
If you are an art lover, you need to experience this artist!!!
