I gave this 5 stars because it is written by a "real" person not claiming to be more enlightened than anybody else. You can sense the genuineness of the author's intent in this book. It's an easy read.

It is truly rare to find a book so full of Truth. This brilliant little treasure will help struggling mothers to find peace and joy in their own journey through motherhood. I can not stress enough how perfect this book is! The author, Karen Maezen Miller, shares her life experiences, from the simple to the heart wrenching, and then is able to use those experiences to present, more than just Buddhist truth, but what I consider to be universal truths. I finished feeling enlightened and inspired. Miller provides mothers with not just encouragement, but encourages a perspective transformation, which will help restrain the suffering and guide you towards joy. Every mother should have this book.

One can almost feel they are listening to Karen Maezen Miller chat with them across the coffee table, so intimately does she confide. It is easy to see her in a chenille bathrobe and smudgy mascara as she pulls you closer into her world. I am glad to find a Western Zen practicioner, a priest yet, who is as solid and real and as loving as my mom. Someone who is teaching me but is so much a student too. As an active and doting aunt to 9 children ages 8 months to 35 years, I have gained insight on my sisters' lives, shed guilt about taking their kids to Mickie D's, and can understand the grace of an apology to a child. I was captivated by the honesty and the wonderful writing. I have given this book to several friends, it makes a perfect gift.

"Momma Zen" is a book to come back to again and again. I dip into it whenever I am having a difficult day, or just seeking inspiration during a quiet moment. Usually I gobble books cover-to-cover, but Karen Maezen Miller's work is wonderful when savored in small bites. "Momma Zen" reads like a series of thougthtful discussions with a wise friend.

Motherhood is full of uncertainty, reversals, and discovery. "Momma Zen" is a wonderful companion on this journey. Whether you are an expectant first-time mother or the a seasoned Mom, this book has something for you. I recognize myself in every chapter.

We live in an era where an avalanche of advice books can feel overwhelming. "Momma Zen" takes a different approach by connecting with the heart of motherhood--the enduring, essential challenges, lessons and blessings that we encounter in relationship with our children. Karen Maezen Miller's work is a true gift to give yourself or a friend.

In my opinion, this is one of the best starter book for raising a puppy, I wish I know about this book 3 months ago when we get our first ever puppy. I now know that we have spoiled the little guy and will need a much longer training to bring him back to true family pet.

The reason it does not get a 5 stars is the book missing detail on some of the training technique or process. But overall, I recommand this to all new dog owners.

Wonderful, user friendly book

I have had dogs all my life, and though I thought I knew dogs pretty well and how to train them, I learned a lot from this book. I recognized that some of my methods were out of date. I tried these new and improved methods on a new dog I just got who is 1.5 years old. It has been amazing how quickly our bond grew from these both sensible and respectful methods of teaching. I learned not to be quite so forceful with my new friend. I learned that being Alpha in the pack did not mean having to intimidate my dogs. I highly recommend it for those who are not getting the behaviors they want and need from their dog companions, and also, for those who are considering getting or just have added a new dog of any age to the family. Knowledge like this can really save many if not most of these beautiful and loving animals from being dumped at our shelters or elsewhere.

A good beginner's dog-training guide.

This book goes over the basics of puppy and dog training using positive methods. It's a great introduction to positive training methods and describes how to teach your dog a number of important behaviors. It has definitely helped me train my new puppy. My only complaint is that there are a few training descriptions that don't really tell you how to finish the exercise with your dog. For example, the book goes over the difference between "wait" and "stay" and describes how to do both, but focuses on "stay." It didn't really tell how you tell your dog he can stop the "wait." I'm going to be looking for more information to help me continue training my puppy, but I still would definitely recommend it for anyone new to dog ownership.

While I agree on that message the book conveys would be considered 'common sense', I am continuously amazed at how little common sense I encounter in the world at large. There are too many couples who rush into marriage without considering that the commitment they are entertaining is larger than themselves.

I think the book serves as a tool for use in self examination and reflection, hopefully leading to honest conversations. It's a shame for someone to grow up only after vows are exchanged and families are hurt. My parents were married for 55 years until death parted them. I hope to do at least as well.

Consider giving this to engaged couples or using it along with marriage preparation.

A new favorite!

I've been recommending "Project Everlasting" to all of my friends, whether single, in a serious relationship, or married. For a single twenty-something like me, the stories of the couples in this book are ones of hope and possibility, demonstrating everything that marriage can and should be when two people are genuinely committed. I think what Mat Boggs and Jason Miller have done in collecting these stories is to highlight all the best things of which human beings are capable. The lessons they've captured are invaluable, whether a person is called to marriage or not; to be able to love in the way that these couples have learned to - with a selfless determination - is the greatest thing that we can strive for in this life.

The book is very well written, and Mat and Jason have an open, honest, and engaging way of taking you right along with them on their journey. This is a book that draws enormous amounts of wisdom from a series of personal journeys - those of the couples in marriage, and those of these two bachelors, discovering exactly what it is about marriage that is so worth waiting for, and so worth the effort that it clearly takes!

You have to buy this book!

I'm not a big reader, especially of 'self-help' type books, but after reading an excerpt from this book I was intrigued. The authors have done a wonderful job of presenting the marriage "lessons" they learned in a wonderful story format that aren't far fetched and are very easy to relate to. What I particularly enjoyed about the book was its set-up. The chapters are broken down into short stories about different couples that illustrate the topic focus on in the chapter. For someone who isn't a big reader and has a limited amount of time to read it is nice to have so many good stopping points without feeling lost when I picked the book back up again. The humor interjected into the book is entertaining as well. Both authors are very personable. I've lent it to my fiancé to read (also not a big reader, but enjoying it so far) and plan on giving it as a giving as a wedding gift. Not to sound cliché and cheesy but I laughed, I cried, I highly recommend it to anyone getting married or anyone for that matter.

Tub Toys is truly a terrific book by Terry Miller Shannon and son, Timothy Warner. I was reminded of my own tub time toy experiences as a child while reading. This book is delightful, fun, bright, witty, and even silly. I think a few of my favorite touches were the jacket and the cover design being different from eachother, what a thoughtful touch. I also enjoyed the authors' play on words as the toy search escalates. I thought the Mom and Dad turning into ocean creatures was a fun twist. As if the child's imagination was completely submerged in the water.
As soon as this book arrived I sat down and read it to my daughter. She has dozens of books and brought this one to me three times in a row so that she could hear the rhyme and see the lively illustrations. She's young now, but will surely grow up loving this book. Even now, at 14 months, bath-time is her favorite time of day, she gets so excited about her rubber duckies and her bubbles. I know that she'll be able to relate to the young boy in the story as she grows.
Terry, Timothy, and Lee, you have all done a tremendous job with this one! I look forward to your next collaborations with great excitement and I thank you on my daughter's behalf for sharing your amazing talent for writing and illustrating with the world! Cheers!!!

An enjoyable read for kids and grown-ups alike.

One enthusiastic bather and more than 20 tub toys make for an excellent (if crowded) bath and a charming read. TUB TOYS, a picture book written by mother and son Terry Miller Shannon and Timothy Warner and illustrated by Lee Calderon, is the story of one little guy's attempts to stall his bath --- not to avoid it, but to make sure that all his favorite things get to go into the tub with him!

Shannon and Warner's prose is light-hearted and sweet: rhyming but not at the expense of good word choice. Their young hero scrambles around the house looking for tub toys expected (rubber duck, empty bottles, toy ships) and unexpected (noodle strainer, blocks, spatula). As he adds them all to the bubbles and pulls off his clothes, he imagines his parents as a shark and an octopus. The text counts up to five, but this is not exactly a counting book.

The story is perfectly complemented by Calderon's quirky and bright computer-generated illustrations. They are fun and energetic but not silly.

TUB TOYS is a joyous look at bath time and is sure to please wee bathers before, after or even during the bath! It is an enjoyable read for kids and grown-ups alike.

Without a doubt this book will touch the memories and hearts of everyone who pauses to slowly peruse these casual photographs of men at sea in World War II. Without the overtones of trying to make a statement about the camaraderie that accompanies men off at war, these photographs simply follow a healthy group of sailors resting on board ship, working at their tasks, bonding in the bunk rooms and in play on the decks and the foc'sle. There is an obvious physical relationship that is transmitted in the gentlest ways, further proof that men together find the emotional and physical support so needed in the time of isolation from the world.

It is to Evan Bachner's credit that he shares this truly sensitive body of work with the public at a time when we all need to understand not only the plight of the men away at war today, but of the common threads of pansexuality that have never been a threat but only a solace in a world infected with prejudice. This is a beautiful book which gives a look into the lives of the men of WWII. This is NOT a homoerotic book, these are NOT homoerotic photographs. This is how men were before we became afraid to show affection, before we had to be afraid of every move we made. These are basically boys who grew up on farms and in cities all over America who found themselves on ships in the South Pacific. If your father didn't bring home pictures like this from WWII or if they have become lost, here is a good opportunity to see how life was like on the ships, for America's Greatest Generation.

I picked up this book because my dad and my grandfather served in the US Navy in WW II. I didn't see them or their ships in this book but wow! There are some beautiful photos here! Crisp black and white prints, impressive use of light, some clever composition... and so many strong young men, muscled and slender.

There is a sensuousness to many of the pictures that reminded me of Mapplethorpe's work, although none of them show full frontal nudity. As a collection the photos appear a bit homoerotic, although individually many of the images are fine art. The book is more about excellent photography and gorgeous young men than it is about wartime.

As an historical reenactor, and daughter of a WWII Navy veteran, I am constantly on the outlook for books and information on the lesser known ideas and culture surrounding WWII. This book was a real eye opener! While the author is open about his sexuality and the pictures were no doubt hand picked with a certain agenda, they show a world of innocence that was unconcerned with homophobic ideas of how a man should or should not act. Being together for long periods of time in uncertain circumstances, deep friendships definitely form. Your buddy could be the one to save your life during an attack, or you might loose him in a split second from a torpedo. As a woman, I can imagine the close friendships that would form today under similar circumstances among women, and I imagine men during that time were not held back by all the macho ideas of today. A beautiful book with striking photography, this stands as an important contribution to understanding our father's and grandfather's lives during WWII.

I picked up Sonia M. Miller's "The Attraction Distraction" because I wanted to finally attain that un-manifested desire, but by the time I finished reading the book, I was transformed and so were my desires. I felt free. I felt relief. A much needed relief from longing and yearning... I was finally at peace with myself. This is a different kind of book by a different kind of author. Instead of quenching your thirst with a sip, she shows you the wellspring. Where other teachers and coaches stop, she gently but oh so effectively guides you further. Open the book on any page and you will find something to shift your perspective and stir your heart. Her purpose is not only to help you manifest what you want but to show you that there is more. It's about who you become in the process of manifesting your desire, and her words and exercises aim at the heart of what you are going through on your journey. For example, she speaks of the difference between having a vision versus a goal, of "replacement therapy" when your unyielding "attachment" to something is what hinders you from getting it, and how affirmations are not about repetition but finding ones that are true for you so you truly feel their power in your heart. She uses her life as an example throughout the book and is therefore a compassionate teacher that teaches you to "integrate" your ego and emotions into your life instead of condemning them. If you are willing to take the path of self-discovery, read the book and let her take hold of your hand. You will be so glad you did. I am.

This author, Ken Miller, describes not only the human interests and historical events, but the sights, sounds, and even smells of the war-torn cities in Saigon. I couldn't put this book down!! The love story enriches it even more and it is so true for the young men who found "escape" during such turmoil.I have and will continue to Highly recommend this book to my friends, and especially those out there who have had any connection to the Vietnam War. It helped me to learn more and see yet another side, how it affected All of us.Thank you Ken Miller!!! I look forward to a sequel to this book.Candace Gillen

I had taken this book out from a library to get some ideas for my final project in my cabinet making course and I just had to have it. I like the way the furniture is classified for each time period and also the many pictures and their discriptions.

Great reference book, lots of pictures

I waited and reviewed many books on furniture history and was very pleased with this one. Many beautiful pictures and great information to go with it. Judith Miller is a well penned author in the area of Interior Design. My husband could not put this book down until the end, and was online trying to find many of the pieces for sale! Worth the wait of being picky about what I wanted in a book of this topic. Many of the items in here were, or are, for the top 1% of our society, but you can take the information and apply it intelligently to other more common pieces to get the history and inspiration for those items. I could go on and on, but just trust me when I say, the ink stops here.

This is the most thorough, extensive, well-organized, beautifully photographed book on period furniture and interiors on the market today. It should be a required text for all design schools as well as a treasured resource for collectors, historians, and lovers of furniture of all kinds. Well worth it at twice the price.

A Beautiful Book

We found this book to be a useful guide for styles of furniture of the upper class of society. For doing stage productions this is very helpful, however, more pictures of "common" furniture styles would make this a perfect book for our reference. If you are interested in collecting antique or reproduction furniture you will find this a great resource. It's like strolling through a museum.

Rescuing another person is always trickier than it may at first appear. Anyone who has tried it - through adoption, friendship or relationship - will discover the deep complications that inevitably occur. The question in "Jamaica Girl," a novel I couldn't put down except to sleep, is: who rescues whom? For all her poverty and lack of education, young Rosalind shows her supposed sophisticated savior what manhood is all about. A wonderful reversal in a book full of surprises! I sent this book immediately to my sister, who shares my love of delicious literary treats!

AN INCREDIBLE LOVE STORY!

This book is incredible. I love it! It is an incredible love story, certainly with a different twist and many anxious turns, and even though Glenn starts something not too many people would admire, in the end, I can't help but want the relationship to work. The characterization is phenomenal. Each character is so different, and exciting. This would make a great film.
What I like about the writing is how all the subplots not only get resolved and some of them are pretty difficult, but all of them are somehow linked to the progression and end of the story. I really, absolutely love this story.
This is such an unusual story and it touches so many different opinions and feelings, but I can't help but want Glenn & Rosie to make it. We are never responsible for whom we fall in love with, and in the beginning Glenn does try to do the right thing according to the rules where HE lives. But, there are other worlds and the reader has to think outside the box to fall in love with the relationship, and Mr. Miller has done that very well.

HECK OF A BOOK

"Jamaica Girl" is a heck of a book. The brief information on Jon Michael Miller on the back cover concludes that the Saint Petersburg, Florida, resident "travels to Jamaica whenever he can." The depth of detail and intimacy with the subject in his novel hint that he has racked up more frequent flyer miles than an Air Jamaica in-flight attendant. And that when Mr. Miller comes to Jamaica he stays.

Glenn Webber and Rosalind Mitchell move from an initial meeting as she hitchhikes between Negril and Lucea to living together in a cottage in western Jamaica blissfully. Their union is accompanied by her growth from a shy, illiterate though certainly not unassertive girl just into her teens into a confident festival queen who takes the national title when she suggests "less hands out and more eyes bright" for tourism.
And Glenn, a middle-aged American, moves from being lacklustre about life and overweight to, on the final page, walking to the edge of a cliff and doing "a perfect swan dive into the blue-green sea", a happy man.

And it also includes scheming, intrigue, murder, whitemail, visits to the provider of spells, near prostitution, licky licky police, Jamaican 'runnings' and, of course, sex.

The writer's skill is evident throughout "Jamaica Girl", heady stuff indeed. Especially impressive is his attention to detail in situations that are way outside the ken of even community tourism, with details of his trip to the Black Cherry go-go club, to the home which Rosalind visits to get a potion and to the waterfall and stream in the hills above Lucea where the young country miss grown into near international model lives.

The perspectives of a foreigner on Jamaica are striking. Before Glenn and Rosalind have sex, his Jamaican friend Duane asked if he has yet "kill it". Glenn is shocked and it leads to a discussion between the two about how women are treated. Duane explains that with his woman Nicole, "she do for me, me do for her". Glenn replies: "...Maybe it's a Jamaican thing. But that's not the way I am. I'll feel responsible for her. I can't just think about my own lust, you know? I can't just play with her then throw her away like a used toy." To which Duane advises: "Me tell you man, have some fun. Do it to her, then go home... Give her something, some nice clothes, some money. Then she's better off than most country girls. But don't worry for her. Jamaica girl strong, man. Believe me, Jamaica girl can carry on for them own self".

Miller's patois dialogue could do with some brushing up, but hey, what the heck.

Compared to "How Stella Got Her Groove Back"

Stella and Winston have everything in common but their ages-they are black, beautiful, rich and cool. But Glenn and Rosalind have nothing in common. The issue in "Stella" is simple; in "Jamaica Girl" there are issues upon issues, and none are simple. In "Stella" McMillan presents the Jamaican settings as idyllic, lush, and verdant, the result of wealth and commercialism - the manicured environment as aphrodisiac. No one in "Stella" has poverty to contend with. It is the fantasy of a successful woman seeking stimulation in paradise.

Like Stella, Glenn reclaims his groove in Jamaica. But Miller reveals Jamaican life far outside the sterilized confines of the all-inclusive resort. In "Jamaica Girl" we see the reality of the land and of the people, a place where people must eke out their existences in a hostile world. He reveals the joy as well as the agony of that environment. Of the two books, Miller's is not only the braver but the truer. I greatly prefer "Jamaica Girl."
