Title: . Callie and the Stepmother
Absorbing Read ..... Recommended ... 5 stars
The Review
Callie and the Stepmother opens as Callie is hugging her dad goodbye. Dad drives a truck, and Callie must stay home with her new stepmother Pam. Everyone knows stepmothers are evil and do bad things when your dad is away. To make matters even worse Callie also has a new fourteen-year-old stepsister. To make matters even worse again Andrea doesn't like Callie and doesn't want to share her room with Callie. Callie knows it is going to be a long two days before dad returns.
Callie and the Stepmother is writer Meyers' first children's chapter book. The work is an outgrowth of the writers' bedtime stories she made up for her son when he was younger. The book offers a list of illustrations, table of contents and chapters meant to be enjoyed by middle grade readers. The tale will lend itself to use as a `read to' for the younger set, while vocabulary used is within the reading scope of most 9 - 12 year olds. Illustrations provided by artist Rose Gauss set the written word off to perfection.
The misconception children often harbor regarding what is real and what is storybook is often blurred at best. Meyers' Callie and the Stepmother takes those misconceptions, adds a likeable little girl Callie, a patient stepmother and a typical older step sibling and manages to meld them all into an interesting, entertaining, readable work.
Excellent resource reading suggestion for the child therapists shelf, the home pleasure reading library, the blended home library, home school and classroom reading corner.
This is a book I would use in my own classroom for a unit on family, understanding and working through fear and misunderstand.
Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

My 7-year-old daughter and I really loved this book even though we aren't from a blended family. The author really captured how a young child thinks. The way Callie draws her fears from the fairy tales she loves is both touching and realistic. The resolution is also satisfying without being sticky sweet. This is a great book to talk with your child about fears, feelings and the differences between what happens in stories and the real world. Highly recommended!

I found this book and the men's wear companion to be extremely informative and one of the best guides around for learning how to create a tailored garment using the traditional techniques as opposed to the "speed" tailoring that is so popular. I was disappointed that the women's book did include pants. Everyone is not going to buy both books. A basic pair of women's trousers could have been included. I was also surprised that neither book included topcoats or raincoats with zip/button-out linings. They are not just long jackets; there are differences in construction techniques. I also think that there should have been a little more clarification of some things. For instance, it took me a while to realize that silk-finished thread was actually Mettler's silk-finish cotton thread and not a type of silk thread. Minor gripes in comparison to the knowledge to be gained therein by those who want to make couture-quality garments.
Carbon copy of men's edition, but without the great pants

I bought Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Men's Wear first. It's great. The text teaches you how to make beautifully tailored garments. I wanted to see those techniques specifically for women's jackets, trousers, and skirts so I bought this edition. Except for the section on pants and skirts, the text is identical in both books. The sections on women's pants and skirts is like anything you'd find in a commercial pattern instruction sheet - nothing special at all. Couture techniques for making beautifully tailored pants for women are not described or even hinted at in this book. Actually, it's not the fault of the author -- tailoring techniques are actually designed for men's clothing. Couture techniques are essentially for women's clothing. If you want to learn to make tailored jackets (men's or women's), either book gives the same instructions. For tailored trousers, use the men's book. For women's skirts, see Couture Sewing Techniques by Claire B. Shaeffer. (Actually, Claire Shaeffer's Vogue patterns for jackets and trousers are probably a better purchase than this book.)

This is a well-designed book showcasing some students work as well as more known designers like Ahn San Soo, and Art Chatry-in a word, many design examples in this book aren't the ones you seen in hundreds of other graphic design books out there. The work shown in the book aren't placed there randomly like a catalog display. They all effectively accompany a particular topic in discussion-about color.
There are seven chapters in the book:
1. Intro
2. The Terminology of color
3. Basic Color Theories
4. The Creation of Color Wheels
5. Color Calibration and Overprinting
6. Color Prepress and Printing
7. Behavioral Effects of Color
Note that the book for graphic designers. Those who want to study color theories and psychology of color may want to look else where. What l really like about this book is the discussion of prepress work and explaning step-by-step how to manange and correct colors. Like what you can find in the book, "Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color", there are also 19 pages of "color associations" which package designers may find useful. This book also blows away "Color Index." The book comes with a CD containing PDF files of "hue swatch system."

The Comfort of "The Comfort of Home"

"Comfort" is a perfect word for the title of Maria M. Meyer, Paula Derr, and Susan C. Imke's book "The Comfort of Home." The authors are accomplished registered nurses as well as caregiver educators and advocates. Ms. Imke contributes a wealth of specialized knowledge of, and experience with, Parkinson disease. "The Comfort of Home for Parkinson Disease" brings comfort and peace of mind to families of people with Parkinson disease. The authors have successfully compiled a complete collection of the latest Parkinson disease-specific information, resources, caregiving options, record-keeping templates, home safety tips and illustrations, and much more. The material is presented with clarity and compassion. Two imporant and fundamental premises permeate the book: 1) that Parkinson disease affects not only the patient, but the caregiver, and the entire family system; and 2) that PD demands a holistic, team approach to care. This book not only validates, but also elevates, the role of the family caregiver as someone who is intimately involved in, and knowledgable about, the disease, and who is an integral member of the care team. The book goes the extra mile (actually, miles) to help any family caregiver navigate the systems of health care, home care, and Parkinson disease. I heartily give this book 5 stars.

"One of the many definitions of comfort is "the capacity to ease well-being", which certainly applies to our homes when we are seeking well-being. The word, care, may have many meanings in different scenarios, but one I like best is "to treat with dignity". The Comfort of Home is truly the best resource for caregivers I have seen. The basic descriptions, pictures, quick bullets of information and tips are just what caregivers need to learn, provided in an easy to "read and see" version. The myriad of helpful topics condensed here is just what caregivers I work with have requested and will benefit from. I highly recommend this resource to all caregivers of those with Parkinson's disease."

The book is a wonderful addition to our library at the Family Caregiver Alliance. By sharing these books with us, you have helped us help our clients. The layout, in manual style with clear headings and bulleted or numbered items, makes the material very accessible...each book is divided into three parts: Getting Ready, Day-by-day, and Additional Resources.. Additional chapters on therapies and special challenges are included in the Stroke guide. In both, tips notes and resources are included throughout, as well as sample forms. The Comfort of Home for Stroke: A Guide for Caregivers is a practical guide especially for anyone charged with the responsibility of taking care of a stroke survivor. Chapters instruct the reader in the causes of stroke and how to prevent one from recurring, how to make the home safe and comfortable for a stroke survivor, the key factors for a successful stroke recovery, how to communicate effectively with health care professionals, coping with personality changes in a stroke survivor, handle everyday activities such as wheelchair transfers, bathing, and toiletries, and much more. Written in plain terms, and filled with valuable checklists, bullet points, black-and-white diagrams, lists of resources, glossary, and index, The Comfort of Home for Stroke is an absolute "must-have" for anyone working with or taking care of a stroke survivor. Highly recommended.

I thought this book had a lot of good basic information (including sources for products) for someone taking care of an elderly stroke survivor at home. This book assumes you will be taking on the role of full time nurse/medical assistant and even gives instruction things like changing bed linens with the person lying in bed - like in a hospital. I did like the reminders that caregivers need to take care of themselves - this is vital not only to the caregiver but also to the patient, who will receive better care and I applaud the authors for giving this strong emphasis. I took of a star because of them extreme emphasis on elderly stroke survivors and dark view of recovery. There are many many younger people who suffer strokes each year - in my case a young adult sister. After her stroke I sought out information on strokes like a woman possessed - and this book would have frightened me unnecessarily. For example, the book states that docs say that all of the recovery that will take place will happen within the first six months. After this heartbreaking statement, the sidebar "tip" says that although the MOST gains occur during the first six months, recovery continues after that time period. They did a huge disservice to readers by presenting this information in that way. Other stroke books I consulted (and my own experience) indicate that recovery will continue for a very long time - more than 3 years for noticeable gains. Also, the book assumes that the person will never, ever return to his or her old job - incorrect information in my experience. Overall, it is a good basic book - but overly pessimistic on recovery. The first book you should read is Living With Stroke: A Guide for Families, 3E....then once things settle down and you are thinking about long term care you might try The Comfort of Home.

This book is very uplifting and contains quotes from the The Holy Bible to help you deal with issues that can be discouraging in your life. Joyce also includes some personal accounts of situations she has been in where certain scriptures have given her encouragement. This book is great just to keep on hand all the time to help us remember some of God's promises. It fits perfectly in my purse. It certainly has helped me with depression, fear and stress. When the world is not encouraging, here is some of God's words for encouragement in the journey of life. I love the way the book is put together, it is actually a beautiful book in both appearance and content. I think it's a great gift for anyone you care about, because we all have times in our lives were we need some inspiration.

This prayer book is broken down into several chapters - stress, depression, anxiety, worry, fear, etc. Whenever I'm feeling a little off-track, I turn to this book and ALWAYS find something to boost me. Joyce uses both scripture and personal experience in a very compelling way. This prayer book, along with "The Joy of Believing Prayer" are two of my favorites.

I really enjoyed this book - I started scrapbooking recently but also wanted to try making altered books. This was a great start for me because the projects were very good, but not intimidating like some of the other projects I've seen in books. I have been able to get ideas from this book that I can really use.
This book has helped me get started with altering books and other items. I think it is particularly helpful for the scrapbooker who wants to try altered art.

Well written book that offers a view of life in a Confederate military prison. Steve Meyer's commentary gives a historical perspective to the account of Benjamin Booth, the man who endured the privations and lived to write the story.

The heart of this book is an account by a northern prisoner, Benjamin Booth, of his time in Salisbury Prison, North Carolina. Although he was writing thirty years after the fact, time did not mellow Booth; his captors were fiends etc. To this account Steve Meyer has added some useful modern commentary; it would have been even more useful with footnotes.

Excellent Reference for Statistics for Data Analysis

This book was an excellent reference for me while doing some data analysis. Some other books on the subject seem intended for a student's lab course and are not very useful as a more advanced reference. Other more advanced texts on statistics tend to be geared toward statisticians. This text strikes a good balance, covering a wide range of material in enough depth to be satisfying.
The book is a bit old. The sections on Monte Carlo methods and curve fitting are ok, but were written before computers were as common as they are now. Especially for curve fitting Bevington will be a more useful book.

Extremely readable and practical guide.

I read and frequently use the 1975 edition of this book. The mathematical principles are well illustrated with practical examples of the analysis of data acquired by experimentation. I look forward to reading this newer edition.
Still useful

I have used heavily the first edition of this book, published in 1975, and have found it an excellent source of reference and a good teaching aid in the subject. With the proliferation of software packages in statistics, some of these now using artificial intelligence, it is imperative that students still have a good training in the foundations of probability and statistics. I am glad to know that the book has been reprinted and is now available to be of assistance in this regard.
The author does a fine job of explaining the nature of data collection and scientific investigation, and also proves rigorously the properties of the most common probability distributions, such as the binomial, hypergeometric, Poisson, Gaussian, Student's t, negative binomial, multinomial, exponential, Weibull, and log-normal distributions. Noticeably missing is the Pareto distribution, which has become very important in network modeling and computational biology. Also included is a brief introduction to Monte Carlo experiments. There has been an explosion in the last decade in the use of Monte Carlo simulations, particularly in financial engineering, and this will no doubt continue in years to come.
Statistical inference is also treated very adequately in this book, and should prepare the beginning reader for using the statistical packages currently available. Missing of course are discussions of time series and nonlinear regression using neural networks, but reader who need exposure to these areas will be prepared after reading this book.
Computational and artificial intelligence are quickly overtaking the world of statistical estimation and modeling, and future books in data analysis will no doubt be considerably different than this one. But programming and designing these intelligent programs or machines will still require a thorough understanding of statistical concepts, and this book still serves well in that goal.

Pam, the stepmother, doesn't look evil, or even sound that way, but Callie knows it is only a matter of time before she will be locked in the attic, forced to clean the fireplace and be fed poison. It doesn't help that her older, possibly wicked, stepsister resents having to share her room with the little girl.
Armchair Interviews says: This is a sweet story about separating reality from fairy tales. The book would be fun for children in primary grades, especially those in a blended family.
