True Belorissian classic

Review Date: 2005-01-06
For those who are not very familiar with Belorussian literature I would first of all like to mention that Bykov is considered one of the greatest writers in Belarus, almost an idol. An iconical figure,a symbol of liberty, patriotism and truth, he devoted all his life and writings to the thing he loved most- Belarus. His books are all about the country, its people, most of them are set in the times of the Great Patriotic War of 1940-1945 which is the most gruesome moment in the country's history. The War took every fourth of Belarus' population, swiping off the Earth dozens of villages and towns. "Sign of Misfortune" is set in one of the typical Belorussian villages, the protagonists are typical rural dwellers that you are bound to see if you visit the country. This is the story about the struggle of the people against fashism,a sad, heartbreaking story about faith and love... Bykov is at his best here, the book is compulsory for literature classes in every school in Belarus. Because of his continuous pursuit of truth and justice, his desire to speak openly, the Writer was practically banished from Belarus by the existing there political system, and had to find asylum in Germany( ironically enough, the country, which regime he was fighting against during the 1940s) If you want to expand your knowledge about Belarus, its people or just read an interesting book, this is the one for you. Don't hesitate to contact me on this matter if you have any questions about Bykov or Belarus, I'll be more than happy to help you.

lighthearted fun New York amateur sleuth tale
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-04
NYPD Homicide Detective Andy Faluso heads the investigation into the murder of professional escort Dick Kordell. The prime suspect is wannabe actress and super mannequin model dummy Karen Doucette because she was dating the deceased just shortly before he died. Andy has focused on her as he is in her Manhattan kitchen as much as her refrigerator and on the phone with her so frequently he must have communication stock. Interestingly he believes she is innocent.

Karen admits to herself she wanted him dead for cheating on her with her ex best friend, but she just dropped both of them, not killing anyone. Still someone who knew of her relationship with the late lover has left evidence to hang Karen. Concerned that Andy, who she likes having around, will arrest her, Karen poses as a freelance journalist to interview Kordell's wealthy female clients to determine who wanted that Dick dead.

THE SINGLE GIRL'S GUIDE TO MURDER is a lighthearted New York amateur sleuth tale with obvious police procedural elements. The story line reflects the heroine, a cool, breezy, and nice person. The murder investigations (professionally and amateurish) nicely contrast one another especially when ironically the reader knows why Andy spends so much time with Karen while she remains clueless. Joanne Meyer writes a fun Manhattan mystery that in spite of an Irish Stew queen sized ending deserves chapter two in Karen's guide to mayhem and bad cooking.

Another major story to screen work.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-06
A follow-up to his massive study of Robert Louis Stevenson on the screen, this is another of Scott Nollen's meticulous works chronicling the process of filmmaker's attempts to film the works of a great Victorian author. A lifelong devotee of Sherlock Holmes, Nollen also covers Arthur Conan Doyle's non-Holmes stories such as THE WHITE COMPANY and THE LOST WORLD. Conan Doyle's fascinating life is covered in detail, as well as all his stories and all the major films adapted from them. A terrific read, with a great foreword by 7% SOLUTION author Nicholas Meyer, who also contributed material to a couple chapters in the book. As with Nollen's ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON: LIFE, LITERATURE AND THE SILVER SCREEN, this book features many rare photos from the author's collection. A beautiful hardcover worth every penny!

This rowing book is very helpful for the serious rower with training guidelines and technical advice. Also good for those post-college rowers in community clubs with little coaching available!

Praise for Social Movements

Review Date: 2002-08-16
"An important collection, integrating studies of consciousness, collective identity and culture with studies of state and organizational structure and strategy. Each chapter marks an advance in our understanding of social movements."
--Jane Mansbridge, Adams Professor, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

"This wonderful book is a vital step forward in the building of social movement theory."--Mary Katzenstein, Professor of Government and Women's Studies, Cornell University

"Meyer, Whittier, and Robnett call for a collective response to the gaps in social movement research today, offering bridges between sociologists and political scientists. Rarely have I read so well integrated a set of papers on so broad a theme in social movement research."
-Sidney Tarrow, Maxwell Upson Professor of Governmetn, Cornell University

"This wide-ranging and thoughtful collection is a showcase for the talents of a younger generation of social movement scholars. It bodes well for the future of the field."
--William A. Gamson, Professor of Sociology, Boston College

"Meyer, Whittier, and Robnett have compiled a stimulating, rich, and theoretically groundbreaking set of articles. This is 'must reading' for anyone interested in theoretical advances and shifts taking place in the social movement field."
--Verta Taylor, Professor of Sociology, Ohio State University

I gave this to my mom for Valentine's Day, as both my parents grew up in So. Philly - one Jewish, one Italian. She is seeing some of her memories come to life in this book, viewing one familiar place after another. Her uncle's store was even listed! She is so happy to have received this very special gift, and I am thrilled I could find it for her. As soon as she finishes reading it, we will be sharing the other one together, the South Philadelphia Italians. It definitely was the perfect Valentine's gift!

When I was a young child my family stopped at Spikehorn's Bear Den on several occasions while traveling to northern Michigan. This book took me back to things that I had forgotten and things that I never knew about 'Spikehorn' Meyer. Spikehorn was a truly one of a kind American and this book is well worth the time invested. A real look backward to a simpler and more colorfull time in our history. Excellant read.
