"Mike has a story of pain, a story of change, a story of recovery and a story of success that ANYONE can benefit from and take away information that they can use in having a good mood every day in their life. There is also an inspiring chapter, written by Mike's wife, Michelle...and offers up perspectives from the spouse's point of view of how to support your loved one and yourself at the same time...I highly recommend this book..." An excellent, touching book. I laughed, cried, and related to this witty, bittersweet account of a second generation father and his first daughter.

Washington, D.C. as a place of spiritual pilgrimage...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-01
Who would have thought of Washington, D.C. as a spiritual destination? You will think so after reading this rich, soulful guidebook to the capital's architectural idiosyncrasies. This author, whom I find more inspiring and much more readable than mythologist Joseph Campbell, escorts the reader on a journey to the mythic center of what Lincoln called "the last great hope of mankind." What better time in our history to visit and revisit it as sacred space. In the words of the author, "to visit Washington is to experience the retelling of a story of mythic proportions." The conclusions Meyer draws from his epiphany, described in the chapter entitled "Reflections," are alone worth the price of the book.

Great Comprehensive Kippenberger Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-25
This is the best out of what is currently available about the Kippenberger ouevre and life that is neither outrageously expensive nor in German. There are excellent reproductions and the texts are varied and fresh. An easy read, it is a great introduction to Kippenberger, dealing with his work and life in chronological order. I would say it is a bit better than the other "Kippenberger" from Phaidon, as it sees his work from the perspective of influence, or life "after Kippenberger". A wonderful artist, a life-changing thing to come to know his work and learn about this man who made funny, great and awful work by not trying to be a "serious" uptight artist. Not trying hard.

I strongly recommend the entire Wills Eye Series for ophthalmology residents. Full color photos and concise descriptions. More useful in a pinch than the BCSC series, although note that this series has no test questions.

New Hampshire's Cornish Colony: Highly Recommended
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-10
In the late nineteenth century, an American cultural center that arose in New Hampshire Village became known as the Cornish Colony. A summer retreat of the famous sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens, the Colony became the center of an American renaissance that lured notables in the arts, literature, music, and theatre such as Maxfield Parish, Paul Manship, Witter Bynner, Walter Damrosch, Isadora Duncan, Marie Dressler -- and even President Woodrow Wilson. From the 1880s to the 1920s, the Colony comprised an elite center of cultural communication but in the remainder of the twentieth century it was largely ignored by cultural historians. Fortunately, especially for lovers of the arts and history who live far from New England, Fern Meyers and James Atkinson have collected a stunning set of photographs that evoke the ambiance of a community of artists inspired by a setting in the high hills alongside the broad Connecticut River. Their detailed comments encapsulate the history and ethnography of the Colony with an intimate view of residents' personalities and activities at work and play. Men and women artists are given equal time, and even children get a share in the description of their pageants and plays, one of them directed by Ethel Barrymore. A delightful collection of photographs depicts a remarkable group of talented individuals and families in "the Gilded Age" of American culture. Highly recommended for cultural historians, critics, and all lovers of the arts.

qualitative analysis of evidence of violence against women
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-19
Marian Meyers used original research to document the cultural slavery women are subjected to when victims of male violence. She is innovative in her approach by using documented case studies to prove how the media puts women into their place in society. I applaud her for having the guts to write about this apathetic evil that continues to keep women from seeking help when in this situation. As long as women continue to ignore male manipulation of news( from a male societies personal perspective) we all suffer at the hands of scrupulous liars of misinterpretation of information and sterotyping of women.

Excellent book for managers and for clients.
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1997-09-27
I now find it is smart business to buy a copy of this book and give it to each prospective client who needs to know why the software industry is on fire on the subject of object-oriented software development. A non-technical manager can read this book and understand object-orientation sometimes better than some of the Techs he or she manages! So a technical manager had better read this book before the boss gets handed a copy by someone else.
