The idea of inclusive and expansive language has been an undercurrent in liturgics for quite a while, but in the past decade or so, it has assumed a place of primary importance. In this book edited by Ruth Meyers and Phoebe Pettingell, the charge of the Episcopal Church's General Convention to develop prayers and liturgies incorporating more expansive language is demonstrated both in essay and in useful form.

In the first essay, Jennifer Phillips discusses the poetics of liturgy. Language should be virtuous, musical, evocative, and theologically appropriate. How does one express theological and spiritual truths leading to justice while also calling forth a response from the rhythmic experience of the senses? There needs to be an elegance (notice that this does not imply ornament or elaborate), but also something basic and accessible. Phoebe Pettingell continues in the second essay to look at the development of language, as Episcopal liturgies broke away from rigid adherence to post-Tudor influences and began to incorporate American language patterns, with a particular eye toward including in deliberate fashion those who had not been included before -- women, people of different races, etc. Liturgical language must respond to and incorporate a common language, to make it truly Common Prayer.

Ruth Meyers explores the history of imagery and language use in the third essay, proceeding then to discuss a broader image for God (as Father and Mother), Christ, the Trinity, and the use of the word Lord, as well as new images in Divine Wisdom/Sophia, and the trend away from masculine-dominant pronoun usage. Gregory Howe concludes the essay section by looking at issues in cyberspace -- what does it mean to have set liturgies that are book-based in an increasingly digital (and therefore increasingly adaptable) age?

The second section of the book includes texts for the liturgical year (the seasons of Advent, Epiphany, Lent, and Easter, various holy days and saints days), pastoral occasions, offices and other events. There are Eucharist prayers derivative of Celtic traditions, writings of Julian of Norwich, Anselm of Canterbury, and more recent adaptations such as the Diocese of Delaware in companionship with the Diocese of Pretoria, and the anniversary of the Council of Women's Ministries. These prayers include new language and situations not covered in more traditional liturgies, but have the same recognisable character of Anglican liturgies.

This is an interesting and useful text, worthwhile for learning a bit about the history of liturgy as well as its possible directions in the future. The prayers are very useful, and should be welcome as inspiration if not simple addition to services.

Meyer is a master of the art of telling baseball stories. His use of language is outstanding and his sense of detail, wit, humour have made this one of the most memorable baseball books ever written. This is certainly a classic "sleeper." Rediscover this book if you can.

If you want to learn grappling, this is a must read. Over the years I've studied Japanese and Korean Karate as well as Kempo, and none of these systems taught any grappling. I recently started practicing Ju Jitsu and in order to expand my knowledge I started reading everything I could find on the subject.
It is my opinion that the Braun Jui-Jitsu series can't be beat. I just finished reading "Grappling" and half way through I had a better grasp of the subject than after reading four of the Gracie books. All the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu books by Invisible Cities Press are great books and I highly recommend them, but Braun presents the essential elements of grappling all in one easy to understand book.
The photography is sharp and clear with background colors contrasting with the clothes worn by Master Braun and his partner. It is easy to to understand and learn how to execute every technique in this book just from folowing the pictures. There are usually 4 photos per page with concise descriptions of each technique. Close-up photos are inserted as necessary along with helpful tips and an overview of each topic to be covered.
If you are just getting into martial arts and want a few good books that will deliver the most useful content for the price, invest in Master Braun's "Jiu-Jitsu The Basics", "Grappling" and "Jiu-Jitsu Training". Later on expand your library with books from the Gracie series as well as Marc Tedeschi's "The Art of Holding", "The Art of Throwing" and "The art of Groundfighting". "Savage Strikes" and "Killer Submissions" are useful reading as well.

Dr. Bruce Meyer's broadcasts on CBC's This Morning have taken the nation by storm and caused a major revitalization of the literary classics in Canada. All over the country, in schoolrooms, doughnut stores and coffee shops, people have been meeting to discuss the classics because of these broadcasts. The soon to be released The Golden Thread: A Reader's Journey Through the Great Books by Dr. Meyer is sure to take off following the overwhelming popularity of this, the largest-selling series of cassettes in the history of the CBC! This series, with its humorous, moving and extraordinarily brilliant observations on the Great Books is sure to make an avid reader of you and transform the way you look at both literature and the world around you. This is a "must buy" item for anyone who wants to get in touch with great ideas -- Dante, Virgil, St. Augustine, Milton, More, Machiavelli, Ovid, The Bible, Sophocles and many more.

It is worth having this important reference book on the Great Exhibitons in the later half of the nineteenth century. Lots of visual images. It covers nine international exhibitions, including the first Great Exhibition in 1851, New York 1853, Paris 1855, London 1862, Paris 1867, Philadelphia 1876, Paris 1878, Paris 1889, and Paris 1900. I hope that the author will continue to write on the following exhibitons, such as Paris 1925, the famous Arr Deco Exhibiton, and so on...

This is a rare commentary. By F.B. Meyer. Tho you may often need a dictionary at your side, : ) the treasures in this commentary are well worth it. I've been most inspired by this deep thinker who reminds me a bit of Andrew Murray.

I received my order in a very timely manner, as a matter of fact, before I anticipated receiving it. The package was wrapped with care and the used book was well taken care of and I got the end product as I expected - in great condition. The book is very useful, from what I browsed through and will be very helpful. I am very pleased with Book-A-Teria and would consider using them again if I ever run into the situation of having to purchase a used book and I would also highly recommend to others!

THE SAGA BEGINS WITH SCHRODER GROWING UP ON THE MEXICO-CALIF. BORDER NEAR SAN DIEGO. RUSTLING, BANDITS. ALASKA: HE SPENT A WINTER SNOWED IN WITH JACK LONDON. THEN ON TO CHINA WHERE FROM THE 1880'S THROUGH 1917 THIS MAN WAS ON ONE LONG ADVENTURE. ITEMS: HIS INTEREST IN THE METEORITE THAT STRUCK SIBERIA AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY (1900) AND THE CURIOUS BEHAVIOR OF THE TIBETAN MONKS, LONG BEFORE METAPHYSICS BECAME FASHIONABLE. HIS CRITICISM OF ROY CHAPMAN ANDREWS. HE WORKED FOR THE AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. IN CHINA AND WENT EVERYWHERE WHEN IT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DO SO. THE BOOK COVERS HIS LIFE FROM THE 1880'S THROUGH 1917 NO DOUBT A LOT MORE HAPPENED TO HIM THAN WAS IN THE BOOK, BECAUSE THE BOOK ONLY COVERED THOSE YEARS AND HE LIVED WELL INTO HIS NINETIES. HE DIED OF INJURIES FROM AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. IF YOU LIKE TRUE NON-STOP ADVENTURE THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST.
