Very impressive piece of statistical analysis. I would use it everyday to buy/sell electricity if that's what I did for a living. Layout and desktop publishing work is outstanding - a real tribute to the professionalism of the authors. Of course, I think the real praise goes to Mr. Kingham for his extreme intelligence and technology skills. I can only wish him the best of luck.

Unique approach to musical analysis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-06
This book was pivotal in my personal musical development. It is very scientific and factual in its approach, using logic and analysis which may seem quite unmusical, but it is all at the service of its title, the Emotion and Meaning in Music.
If you are a scientist, I highly recommend this as an approach to classical music.
If you are a trained musician, I highly recommend this as an opening into musical and psychological analysis that is not covered in music school.

Monumental Chemistry Reference: Practical & Detailed.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-09
analytical chemistry has undergone a considerable amount of change in the equipment and procedures used. Generally analytical chemistry is concerned with the detection and identification of atoms, ions or radicals that of which a substance is composed, the compounds they form, and the proportions of these compounds that are present in a given substance. The editors define analytical chemistry as the measurement, characterization and mapping of chemical species or systems varying from (1) the components of life, such as proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, clinical samples, biomedical spectroscopy, forensics; (2) threats and safeguards to life as in chemical weapons agents, pesticides, environment, industrial hygiene and forensics; (3) life critical or enhancing analyses, such as food and pharmaceuticals; and (4) analyses required by industry, such as coatings, particle size, polymers, rubbers, metals, pulp and paper, process, petroleum and surfaces. The techniques utilized span the in-situ analysis of soil, water, waste, air and the human body, to laboratory analyses, remote sensing and stellar spectroscopy.

This major reference work, an epoch in a practical and summary statement of basic methods and procedures in many material sciences, will become a foremost location for baseline descriptions of chief features of analytical chemistry. The contributors to Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry: Applications, Theory and Instrumentation included over 800 authors, more than 600 peer reviewers, 42 Section Editors and 13 distinguished Board Members and Advisors worked on the production of the Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry: Applications, Theory and Instrumentation for more than three years. Their objective was to prepare the largest, most comprehensive compendium of analytical chemistry ever. Indeed, this work has twice the bulk and breadth of any other such compendium, such that a chemist (organic, polymer, inorganic, biochemist, molecular biologist as well as, of course, an analytical chemist), or a physicist or engineer (environmental, industrial or materials) can find all the essential information required to analyze any analyte in any matrix for any purpose or application, interpret the results and also to gain a thorough knowledge of the theory and instrumentation utilized.

A well-organized 2-volume set with an impressive list of domestic and international contributors. The alphabetical arrangement and index help novices to this field find their way around in the encyclopedia. This condensed version focuses on describing and explaining environmental pollution and cleanup and leaves the more in-depth analysis to the 8-volume encyclopedia from which it is derived, published in the previous year. The articles are clearly written and well-illustrated.

Great Introduction to English Corpus Linguistics!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-03
English Corpus Linguistics: An Introduction is a must read for anyone wanting to secure a first foothold of understanding in the field. I think it would also provide a good overview for experienced corpus linguists. The book is extremely well written. There is no fluff but the text is very readable and open to anyone with an interest. The author is consistent in his prose and does a good job of balancing practical and theoretical concerns. He doesn't waste the reader's time with trifles, but makes a good entry into each well-defined subject area, provides you with a content that presents itself without considerable prerequisites of knowledge, and makes a clean exit with an apt conclusion to each chapter. The material builds on itself but is also spread out - but not to thin to loose perspective - so as not to topple the reader. I think the only thing that I might have added would have been a summary checklist with cross-reference back to individual sections. However, with 141 reading pages, it is concise enough to do a quick review by flipping through the various sections. This is important, because there is much information to take from this book as one furthers their learning.

'This is a fascinating account 2 Esdras

Review Date: 2006-09-23
'This is a fascinating account 2 Esdras (sometimes also referred to as Ezra/Shealtiel or the Apocalypse of Ezra, which is also the name of a different but interdependant work) is a Jewish apocalypse that some many scholars purport to be written toward the end of the first century AD. It is not accepted as scriptural by most Christians, who list it among the Apocrypha. However the Ethiopian and Russian Orthodox churches consider it canonical, and it was often cited by the Fathers of the Church.
Uriel
Is one of the most dedicated and faithful members of the host and as such was put in charge of Tartarus (another name for Hades), He Identified as both a seraph and a cherub and is most well known for his appearance in the book of Revelation where he calls forth the birds of the air to feast upon the fallen. Here his role was as Regent of the Sun. Although Raphael is credited with teaching the building of the ark, Uriel warned Noah of the impending flood. He also attacked Moses for failing to circumcise his son.

"Accepted as an archangel by the Church for many centuries, he was finally removed from the records in 745 CE as the Church became increasingly concerned with the prominence the public was placing upon angels."
The name Uriel means God is my Light; or God is Light; or Radiation of God; or God is the radiating principle of Light; or Fire of God.

Uriel is one of the Archangels of rabbinical angelology. He was sent by God to answer the questions of Esdras (II Esdras iv). He is mentioned in I Enoch and IV Ezra, where he "watches over thunder and terror." In the Midrash 1, Uriel is said to be one of the four guardians of God's throne. In The Book of Adam and Eve he presides over repentance.

Uriel appears in Milton's Paradise Lost where he is the 'Regent of the Sun' and 'sharpest-sighted spirit of all in heaven.'

Uriel is of the leading angels in noncanonical lore, and ranked variously as a Seraph, Cherub, Regent of the Sun, Flame of God, and Angel of the Presence. As one of the most faithful and dedicated members of the host, Uriel was also placed in charge of Tartarus (another name for Hades).

Uriel has been identified as one of the angels who helped bury Adam and Abel in Paradise. He is known as the dark angel who wrestled with Jacob at Peniel; as the destroyer of the hosts of Sennacherib ; as the messenger sent by God to Noah to warn him of the impending deluge, (although Raphael is credited with teaching the building of the ark), all of which feats or missions have been credited to other angels. In the view of Louis Ginzberg, the "prince of lights" in The Manual of Discipline, refers to Uriel. In addition, Uriel is said to have disclosed the mysteries of the heavenly arcana to Ezra; interpreted prophecies, and led Abraham out of Ur.

* 'Alastair Hamilton has rescued this prophetic text from scholarly oblivion' - Church History (Nederlands Archief voor Kerkgeschiedenis Vol.81 No.1)
* 'This erudite tour de force is something more than a simple bibliographical examination of 2 Esdras, it is also an important contribution to the intellectual history of the period ... Hamilton's ... study ... fills in some of the gaps left by mainstream histories of ideas that tend to focus on dominant thinkers and their contributions to the development of civilization.' - Journal of The Society for Utopian Studies, Vol. 11, No.2, 2000
* 'Hamilton's study is a fascinating, and different, study of how a relatively obscure apocryphon was made use of at a crucial period in European history by some significant and influential writers, and indeed by a few artists ... This monograph could and should stimulate renewed study of this apocalypse.' - J.K. Elliott, Novum Testamentum, Vol.XLII, 2 (2000)
* 'Hamilton's monograph betrays wide learning and scholarship. The bibliography and footnotes are full and impressive. His writing style is clear and fluent' - J.K. Elliott, Novum Testamentum, Vol.XLII,2 (2000)
* 'The remarkably thorough and engaging history of hte reception of the apocryphal book of 2 Esdras will be important to historians of the Reformation, particularly those with an interest in dissenting and millenarian movements. ...also worthwhile reading for biblical scholars who are interested in the history of interpretation, because the diversity of hermeneutical approaches during this period is often overlooked. ... Hamilton commands an admirable array of sources, some of them very obsure, and weaves them into a fascinating historical narrative.' - Karina Martin Hogan, Journal of Religion, Vol 81
