This was an interesting book for the VW enthuiast. It showed some VW toys that I forgot existed, and which I found shortly after. Naturally, there is no way to put true value on these type of toys, but the numbers are a good basis for negotiations. All-in-all, a good book for the price.

I have seen Peter Meyer speak on his book tour, and he is as lively a speaker as he is a writer. Although I work in the public sector, I found his ideas interesting and his insights just as applicable to my profession. I strongly recommend checking out his book and taking any opportunity to see him speak in person.

Meyer explains that "This book is about how to reach and sustain warp speed." If that is your business objective, Meyer provides a wealth of information, advice, checklists, graphics, strategies and tactics, flow charts, etc. Part One ("Foundations") introduces his basic concepts. Part Two ("Resources and Applications") focuses on growth and domination of markets, creation and leadership of new markets, management of human capital, the role of technology, and then -- in the 12th and final chapter -- "Warp-Speed Growth: Managing a Business Built for Speed."

In the final chapter, Meyer provides Chart 12-1, "Platform chart for sustainable warp-speed growth" which is first-rate. It correlates all of his key concepts previously discussed in Chapters 1-12 while suggesting a framework within which any organization can more effectively organize its own key information. "Where Do You Start?" Meyer suggests that you invest time to define success criteria and limit options. Next, consider creating and then dominating an entirely new market. Meanwhile, balance your resources as you formulate a strategic plan for their allocation. As that plan is implemented, be constantly alert to better ways in which to invest your resources. Finally, enjoy yourself: "The rewards of sustainable growth should be personal as well as corporate."

Perhaps your organization is currently experiencing little (if any) growth. Perhaps "sluggish" correctly describes its usual response to new opportunities, customer problems, a competitor's initiatives, changes in the marketplace, etc. Perhaps your organization needs to eliminate clutter, confusion, stagnation, and complacency. If any of this is true, Peter Meyer's book can be helpful. However, I presume to offer a few caveats:

1. The more serious the problems you seek to solve, the more difficult it will be to solve them. Hence the importance of strategic priorities.

2. Also, the worst problems have probably been caused by your own people, many of whom may still be around. Guess who will be most resistant to change?

3. "Warp-Speed Growth" must be prudent growth.

4. It is far easier to attain "Warp-Speed" but than it is to sustain it. Unless you and your organization are both willing and able to make a long-term commitment, forget it.

5. Finally, as Meyer repeatedly emphasizes, an organization's most valuable resources are its time, people, and money. They must be managed and conserved BY EVERYONE INVOLVED with meticulous care.

Of course, it is possible for an organization to attain and then sustain "Warp Speed" but be headed in the wrong direction. In ancient Rome, a traveler was often asked "Quo vadis?" Where are you going? Unless and until an organization has selected the correct destination and then remains on course, the speed at which it travels is irrelevant.

Lots of new additions.

Of the many recent books on wavelets, this one by Jaffard, Meyer et al stands out. This is a new edition of earlier ones, starting with a French one, then a first translation, and now this expanded version. There is lots of new material, covering new developments, both with regards to theory and applications. The authors communicate the main points in a clear and attractive way, and it stresses lucid presentation of ideas over formulas. And with an infectious enthusiasm! The presentation is especially refreshing, in that the authors do not hide behind excessive technicalities and mathematical jargon. It is the central idea that shines through. And yet the mathematically sophisticated reader is paid his dues,-- in some cases via the appendices. At that point, the technical mathematical points have been well motivated. The emphasis of the book is the mathematics behind the many algorithms that emerged from the wavelet trends since the 1980ties. And lots of new stuff added (for example JPEG-2000), right up to the present. The book is rich in applications, many of which are not found elsewhere. The inclusion of motivation and historical remarks is welcome, and makes the book enjoyable reading.

Good covering of wavelets applications

Although this book emphasis is on algorithms and applications, the general presentation of wavelets for signal processing is great. The introduction to the subject is really excellent and great care has been given to explaining the use of wavelets for applications in signal processing. On the other side i found the last chapters dealing with applications a little too light for being useful...

Anyway, a great book for "wavelets and applications in signal processing"...(also go to "Time-Frequency Time-scale analysis" by Patrick Flandrin which is wonderful).

This is the most compelling book I have read in a long time. I could NOT put it down! I read Cole Meyer's first book - Brothers of Adversity - and thought it was good but this one will keep you on the edge of your seat. What a gift Cole has for drawing the reader into the character's lives, for making them feel they know these people and sympathize with them. If you read one book this year, let it be this one! You won't be sorry.

This older book is still one of the best out there for crisis preparedness planning. The next frontier of liability is negligent failure to plan. (And reacting wrongly - highly likely - will definitely make things worse.) All CEOs should be aware and proactive in this area.

Fantastic book on Crisis Management

Review Date: 2004-04-15
This book does an excellent job detailing 9 different types of crises that businesses face, from product failure to management succession to a cash crisis. Meyers provides examples and perspective from executives that experienced each of these crises, and how (and why) some managed through successfully while others led to further troubles for the company. I highly recommend this book as well as Meyers' 2nd book, "Healers, Dealers, Brutes, and Saviors."

Unaware that Meyer Schapiro is considered to have been one of America's greatest art historians, I wasn't prepared by the title of his book for an historical account of visual language going back to the 10th century. Although initially feeling somewhat disappointed that this wasn't a more "contemporary" approach to the subject, by the middle of the first essay I was engaged by Schapiro's rich narrative on the relatively narrow subject--Exodus 17:9-13: how artists chose to illustrate not only the text, but how the illustrations reflected the culture in which those texts were considered. I found the second essay to be even better as it covered a longer period in exploring how artists have incorporated text within their illustrations, and how the rendering itself exemplified a period. These two essays aren't easy reading, but if you're willing to invest some mental energy, Schapiro documents a rich tradition of how pictures have been used not only to illustrate text, but to create meanings beyond the text. This historical perspective informs a growing interest in visual language and communication.
